@@aawallace98You're very right. But before Lower Decks came out and all we knew was from the promo material, he did seem like he might be a bully, and if the writers weren't so good it would have been REALLY easy to have him drop into that role.
What they've done with him instead was WAY better than expected.
In fact, that statement applies to the entire show.

Ransom is legit becoming one of my favorite officers. At first he seemed like a self-centered meathead, but gradually we come to see that he's a self-centered meathead who is also competent, dedicated, and supportive of his crewmates. The moment he revealed he's been learning Tamarian metaphors sealed the deal.

I loved that Rutherford has been turning down promotions this whole time because it makes so much sense, dude has saved the ship so many times and is probably the character who has caused the least chaos out of the 4 of them. A little detail I like is Rutherford highlighting Mariner's conflicting assessments on Ransom: "Wait, is he dumb or playing mind games?". I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it's not only a useful way to reinforce that Mariner's actions later are unwarranted and actually harmful to herself and those around her, but is a nice subtle bit of social commentary.
Also, I find it funny that while the problems with Boimler's rooms were certainly external, he only found comfort in cramped bunk-like spaces: his ensign bunk, the crawlspace, and now bunking with Rutherford.

After these first two episodes and thinking about Lower Decks so far, I've come to the conclusion that Jack Ransom is a great Starfleet Officer.
He knew exactly what Boimler and Mariner needed to handle their promotions better showing that as a commanding officer, he knows how to get the best out of his subordinates and help them grow. He's gone headfirst into adventure after adventure, and leads by example. And, aside from when he got turned into a giant head, he's been a great First Officer to Captain Freeman.
Jack Ransom is kind of awesome, and I'm starting to think he's BEEN awesome.
And CBS BETTER SELL SOME MOOPSIE DOLLS. Otherwise, they're leaving money on the table.

I loved this episode. Mariner just continues to be one of the best and most relatable characters of current Star Trek. I love her whole arc over the whole series and this episode was a good culmination of everything we'd seen of her so far. She's such a complex character, sure of herself on the outside, but afraid to let other people see beyond that. And I love how Ransom calls her out on it, that he realizes she's only sabotaging herself, and that he won't have any of it. I'm very curios to see where her arc will go over the season.

Honestly one of the things I really appreciate about this episode is it's placement in the season. They could have easily dragged out Mariner's rebellious attitude thing for the majority of the season and made her trying to get demoted her season long "arc". But that have looked really bad on both her and Ransom because there has to be a point where even the most supportive XO has to do his job and demote her. And that's something I could see from season 1 or 2 Mariner, but I love that the writers were smart enough to go, "Yes, she would rebel, but she's smart enough at this point to recognize her faults when called on them." So getting it out of the way early avoids retreading all of that with her and I'm as super excited to see where they take as am I the rest of the gang.
And yeah, Ransom's "misunderstanding" in the gym was pretty clumsy. I mean just look at his face when he said Mariner wasn't going to be his problem anymore! That wasn't casual chat with a friend face! That was nefarious scheming face!

It’s funny, if you google the company name all the pictures are either of those neon tubes or their rack mount blinkenlights!
I love how they’re getting immortalised in Star Trek in animation form, even though the prop house is closing down. It was just run by one guy for like 40, 50 years and he understandably wants to retire. So people won’t be able to hire them anymore, though there might be a sell-off or something.

  • @Chiscringle

The Moopsie is my favorite Star Trek character and I can't think of anything that will change that.
What happened to Rutherford makes so much sense. He thinks he needs to do something amazing to get promoted and that there's a culture because they offer it and he refuses every time he does something incredible. It doesn't occur to him that this is a check-in, not a prerequisite. "Another outstanding job. Are you sure you don't want a promotion? OK, maybe next time." becomes "You only get a chance whenever you do something that makes us think you might have changed your mind." Him being ready to accept the promotion is all they are waiting for.
I think this episode pushes Ransom into the position of being the best XO on any show. He brings out the best in the crew by aggressively understanding them. I'm not sure how long I want Toothy Ransom to come back, but I hope at least one more episode.

One thought that came to me upon hearing about the promotions coming up in Lower Decks, is the idea that perhaps Starfleet is now consciously organising groups of ensigns to become the future core command for starships: we now have such a group bonding together: a potential Captain (Mariner), Number One (Boimler), Chief Science Officer (T'Lyn), Chief Engineer (Rutherford) and Chief Medical Officer (Tendi). I'd be interested in your reflections on this.

During a recent hangout with a close friend who I've known for years, apparently I asked him quite a few times if he was messing with me when he said genuinely supportive and validating things. He asked me what was wrong and I found myself getting defensive as if I was being interrogated. I was able to trace it back to a bad trauma trigger I had run into a few days prior that was related to some severe childhood bullying. So I wonder if something similar is going on with Mariner.

"What I love about lower decks is the like mundane everyday Star Trek stuff that I feel makes these characters feel alive"
Yeah -- one of the things I think that TNG did very well was showing characters outside of work. You'd see crusher at work and O'brien would just be in the background in a wetsuit getting his shoulder fixed again, or people would just be walking around the ship talking about something, or exercising (lol). The same with DS9 too, where most of the plot happens while people are talking off-duty in Quark's bar, etc.
This kind of... non-action scene? Seems to have got left behind sometimes, although SNW having the captain just cooking something up while people talk was a good continuation. Thinking about it, that's a great part of Pike's character - "Shit, we have a difficult moral dilemma. Time to make an omelette!"

Pike's Ready Room or the SNW Enterprise command deck conference room needs its own kitchen... everybody's chipping in to make a some tasty dish while spitballing solutions to the crisis of the week 😅

I totally agree with you about the “overhearing and misunderstanding trope.” I was so nervous they’d make Mariner do something reckless like let the Moopsy out, but they didn’t. A lot of shows now overuse the “self sabotaging” trope to the point they make the character unlikeable (e.g. Bojack Horseman, Better Call Saul, tbh even Chapel in SNW was a little irritating) but Lower Decks hasn’t gone down that route and I respect them for it. I love how every season shows all of the characters work to improve themselves and their relationships. They realize the characters’ flaws and decide to make them grow rather than crater. Love it. Also, I wonder if we will get more closure with Rutherford’s past. Considering he used to be so different I wonder what his relationship is like with his family/friends before starfleet. Could be a good episode where he runs into someone from his past.

  • @cloudwatcher608

I think the overhearing trope worked fine in this instance because Mariner was actively looking for a way to sabotage herself so it was more about her character arc than Ransom.

I will say that my initial thought on Boimler's first room was to wonder if there was some setting for the viewports to address the nacelle glow - I mean, that seems like an easily fixed issue.
So I was not at all surprised that when he and Rutherford got their room Rutherford immediately knew what to do.
And yes, I also kinda want a moopsy plush.

Ransome's new teeth are a as horrifying as moopsie is cute but they serve as a visual reminder of how good an officer he is because of what he had to do to get them. Im suddenly terrified that he's going to get killed by thomas boimler or something.

Only thing I kind of disagree about is Livik. Given that I'm STILL pissed at the TNG writers that Deanna got promoted to Commander for requiring multiple tries to kill a hologram of Geordi LaForge, while Data SAVED THE 🤬ING FEDERATION from both the Borg and the Klingon civil war and he was stuck at LCDR for 15 years. And still pissed at VOY's writers for Harry Kim, that was inexcusable. Last thing I want is ANOTHER "forever ensign" character to turn up. One was too many. So I kind of hope he just disappears and I can head canon that he just took a LTJG slot somewhere else.

The spirit of lower decks is that it focuses on the epic adventures of the ship from the perspective of the grunts. Someday Mariner and Boimler may be commanding their own ships, but as long the focus doesn't stray from the frustration, busy work, and comraderie of those lowest in command it will still be lower decks.
My current theory about the mystery shuttle: Maybe it is an AI, but it's not inherently hostile, it just preemptively acts in kind. Before each ship was destroyed the captain ordered the destruction of the shuttle. Perhaps if they had made more earnest attempts at communication or scanned for life forms the interaction would have gone differently. (This theory isn't based on Trek lore but actually Star Wars, Luke's cave test on Dagobah: "What's in there?" "Only what you take with you?")
And finally Gary gets best one-liner of the episode with: "I need to replicate some new pants."

One Easter egg I suggest is the episode title. "I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Flee" seems an obvious gloss on Harlan Ellison''s short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." Considering Ellison's very public feud with Gene Roddenberry, this could hardly be a coincidence. 😏

Also, I was driven absolutely INSANE by Boimler's thing. I find it impossible to believe he didn't think to just close the window shades or that there would be living quarters directly between two holodecks or that they wouldn't have sound-proofing (especially given what I learned from you about Gene Roddenberry's originals intentions there.)

I'm with you in disliking the "overheard wrong" trope, but I think it worked in this instance, because, "Not my problem," could mean a ton of different things. Maybe Ransom was getting his own command, maybe Mariner was being transferred to a better posting, maybe Freeman was going to hand her to another officer to manage, because she felt she had been reformed (remember Capt. Freeman ASSIGNED Ransom to handle Mariner's rehabilitation).
Mariner is an avatar for those of us who sabotage ourselves when good things start happening to us, because we're afraid of losing what we've worked for, or we don't believe that we deserve good things. You're right it could've been more obvious that she overheard it wrong, but then by being ambiguous it created the potential to make us FEEL what Mariner felt when she heard that, since many of us jumped right to, "That F'ing a'hole jock bully LIAR!" Like this feels like the payoff of positioning Ransom as the typical meat-headed jock schoolyard bully. We would not have thought the worst if the overheard line had come out of anyone else's mouth.
I love, love, LOOOOOVE that this show is tackling this head on, and that it's showing it in an amazingly realistic way. How many of us went through childhood hearing that we were not as good as others until we believed it too? It wasn't until we lucked into that one adult who looked at us and said, "Hey you're pretty awesome, and I REFUSE to let you convince me or yourself otherwise!"?
That's my take anyhow. As usual great video. 💙💕🤍

It's no wonder they're shaking up the status quo and moving things forward in terms of character stories when they're adding T'Lyn to the mix. Would be very strange to keep the dynamics static while trying to add a new personality to the established cast, I wager this let them be more flexible with the writing. Glad I wasn't the only one to notice the lingering on the bunks.
Ransom has always been more than he appeared and that really came to the forefront in this episode. I do like we're going to get some Boimler/Rutherford dynamics, so really now the most underdeveloped dynamic is Mariner/Rutherford.

I had a slight problem with Boimler not knowing how the windows work on the ship. Like the minute he had the problem with the light for the nacelle I was like, surely you can like close shutters or make the glass opaque or something. Like the joke works okay, and so does Rutherford just reflexively fixing the problem, but sure Boimler might forget for a minute or two that the windows can do that, but he finds his look at the Medusan goggles and yet does not remember how the windows work. I was thinking about problems with that joke too much. Eh humour's subjective.
