Sounds like a piriformis muscle issue, I had a similar problem and piriformis stretches sorted me out pretty quick. Great content, loved your Kenya youtube series!
Love this video Matt I’ve been watching for a whilst and appreciate you sharing this. I’m looking forward to following whatever is next for you good luck with recovery
Great video Matt. One thing for sure is that your best marathon days are ahead of you. This little injury is nothing in the scale of things. You are just a kid in terms of marathon age. Carlos Lopes was also 37 when when he won Olympic gold in 84!
Much respect on this video Matt. I am in exactly the same position as you, i went too hard on an easy run with a group and a back issue i have has flared up and given me a very sore Hamstring. Keep your chin up and like you said yourself, concentrate on you and building back up without that pressure of social media. Good luck and i hope you are back running soon.
Best of luck, Matt. Right there with you. Been dealing with injury for a while. Sounds like high hamstring. Isometrics and progressive load over a period of weeks/months is key. I’ve had that two years ago. Slow heavy RDLs fixed mine. Have your physio try the bent knee stretch test.
Well said Matt, an honest and insightful video. Not bleak at all Gutted for you with the injury, I really hope that your recovery goes well. 🤞 Hamstring injuries are a pain, I tore mine probably six or seven years ago and I still feel it. Good thing is they can be managed and tolerated. 🤞🤞 Old at 37 indeed!!! 😂😂 Look forward to seeing you back on it, love you and Kelly and your banter. Good luck mate. 👊💥
I love your channel because you only put out a video when you have something worth making a video about. When you post a video, I'm watching it because I know it's going to be 100% killer, 0% filler. You do you Matt, looking forward to the future videos!
Needed to see this. I’ve had to pull out of Seville too where I was confident of a first sub 3. Struggling with IT band syndrome. Can’t shake it. Struggling a lot with missing training.
I enjoyed your videos. Just look after and be kind to yourself. Thats life, ups and downs. Running is life Kipchoge would say. I got a heart attack after training for a month in Kenya, nothing to do with running, but it had an impact for sure. Now 6 months later, guess what back on it , something i have to do, maybe a bit more carefull, but life goes on. I m sure you will find your right mood again and share some running journeys when you r ready. 🏃🖐🏃♂️👍
I'm with you on this, I'm out with consistent Hamstring tears and just had to get a plasma injection and I've gone dark as well. Getting a few questions from my club mates but you have to protect yourself when you're injured and nobody needs to hear my woes either. Best of luck with your recovery Matt.
ah mate sorry to hear this Matt, hope you recover fast! whatever you share on social media is 💯 up to you, no one else should tell you otherwise. Having said that, really respect openness about things like injuries from the prospective of someone who’s had a lot of injuries, cos it’s relatable and makes you feel a bit less alone when injured, as it can be an isolating time. Sharing my injuries too helped me as people reach out in a helpful way! particularly with my latest injury when I really needed some advice and validation that this was actually a thing. also, come to the dark side, cycling (not zwift) is sick and so fun! can do loads of volume, intensity and stay pretty good injury wise unless you crash 😂
I guess the thing is - not in a bad way but people become invested in your story, like when you said you were going all in - people get excited for that and when you go dark it might make viewers wonder what is happening. I get the argument that it’s up to you what you share and it is- but it’s a public platform so unless you go private people will always have opinions. Others will resonate with you and want to see you do well. Personally I’d always want to see a runner I follow do updates, even if they are injured as it happens to us all.
Look forward to seeing you soon either here or out & about locally. You are a great bloke and ab encouragement to me … even if you upset me by thinking 37 is old! 😀
Best wishes from Taiwan! Has been followed you for a long time, highly respect your spirits and passion on running and life. Hope you to recovery soon.
Probably my first comment on any of your videos but I watch them all with great interest. Good luck with the rehab. Hopefully the negative comments about you not posting about the bad times so much don't discourage you from sharing what you want to share. It's your channel. You do what you want. If people want to watch it - great. If they don't they have lots of other videos they can watch. The first video I saw you in wasn't even one of yours it was one with you and Andy Raynor having a 5k race around a park. Subscribed and followed your journey since then. Good luck with it all. Keep positive. For any that choose to be critical I'm sure there are a 100 that have your back and are supportive of what you do! Thanks for sharing as always!
Don't sweat it, mate! Just be wise on recovering from your injury. It can definitely be frustrating. Remember to enjoy the runs, even the grinders. And those of your fans who enjoy watching your content for you and the content you make. Don't sweat that stuff, either. As a midlife, out of shape jogger/shambler (who used to be a real runner, at least in my head) I just enjoy seeing other folks running, enjoying it, and having a go at some fun challenges. Recover well, mate, and good luck!
Hey Matt, so glad you’ve put this video out. I get what you mean about negative etc but your fans and supporters like to see your journey through ups and downs. This has really helped me as I thought I could run 10 miles every day for 2 weeks over Christmas until my glute was like a brick. Now still after 2 sports massages and 2 physio still struggling with like you deep glute niggle and hammy tightness. Glute bridges will be the death of me 😂😂😂 please keep sharing love your and Kelly’s content xxx
Ah, I was talking the other day with a friend that we hadn’t seen any new videos for a while. As injury-haunted runners ourselves we supposed that was what had happened. In my experience there is no great advice for that situation. I try to spend time with the family and enjoy the extra hours whenever I am sidelined. Then you come back and run again. It is a bit sad to say but I have gotten used to being injured from time to time, it has helped me make peace with it. Best wishes, fast recovery, I am confident you will get that sub 2:20 you are going for soon! :-D
I watched almost all your videos many times only due to the fact of how optimistic and passionate you are. Good luck in your recovery. Yes: Sticks & Stones really: don’t worry mate
Feel you Matt! I love the fact that you are sharing this! I'm nursing an injury and as frustrating as it is we need to be grateful for what we can do in our recovery period! You will be back as cliched as that sounds! x
Dry needling is painful! I’ve taken a step back myself to get stronger and get my head in the right space for a big push for my Valencia marathon in December. Best of luck.
It’s your channel Matt - make the content you want to make. At the same time, talking about your own challenges with injuries helps others with theirs too so there are positives either way. Maybe you should try Hyrox for a bit - you’d smash it😁
I know it must be a tough one to swallow but we know you will get over it. At least, 2025 just got started and hopefully after recovering you will have more good months ahead of you. Take care! and hope to see you back in training in short time.
Love the content Matt, switching off from social is the best and time to focus on your recovery. Keep up the Zwifting and hope to see you back firing soon.
I feel you. I have just had a PF flareup in my right foot causing heel pain. It got a bit better then Cross Country Champs just finished me off. Tried to mange it but no dice and I'm now on day 3 of no running. Really annoying as I'm in the shape of my life but it is what it is. We go again.
Get well soon. I personally sometimes like to see how amazing athletes like you deal with setbacks and injuries. That has helped me to improve in the past while injured. You got on the bike and went MIA. That’s ok too. Being injured sucks, and we all deal with new situations very differently.
Hey man, I injured my hamstring not long ago. Resting has never healed me before, so I tried stretching and strength training through some discomfort. My reasoning was that I want to remodel the damaged tissue, and stretching and strength training do exactly that. It's worked really well! I'm doing seated leg curls while bending forward at the waist to get a bigger stretch. I'm also doing a cable kickback-curl hybrid thing, again bent over to get a big stretch. And then I'm doing stretching outside of the gym too.
Sorry to hear this. Just remember you don't owe anyone here anything - if you need to go quiet for your mental health, then do it. Any reasonable person following you will totally understand, and the trolls will slag you off whatever you do (so aren't worth considering). Prioritise yourself, whatever that means for you. Hope you have a swift recovery
Nice update, we've all been there pushing it when we know we shouldn't 🤷 hope the mental health stays good and maybe document some of the recovery as this is probably 90% of runners at some stage in the year.
You need to put your own health first. Injuries are difficult to navigate and definitely come with a mental challenge. Take your time and re-start when YOU feel comfortable. All the best 💪
37! I'm 68 - you are just a kid. But seriously, thanks for the update. While it may seem like a downer for you, the video is actually helpful to my mental state as I take some time off running to get my left calf happy again - trail running strain a couple of weeks ago. Look forward to hearing about your 2025 running, wherever it takes you.
Matt, I know how you feel. Coming up to 4 months without running due to superficial labral tears in my right hip that were causing debilitating pain when running. Had to sack off all my races in the first half of this year. Running has been so important to my mental health in recent years so it’s been a challenge to just focus on rehab, PT sessions and cross-training. I will say…you’re just 37 so not over the hill yet!
I’ve got this, right now. Physio thinks it’s proximal hamstring tendinopothy.. where the ham joins the glute. Back in today. I feel your pain, it’s really annoying.. it’s my right leg which is normally my left
Hey Freddie, if you have to go dark, just throw up a "come to parkrun video with me"... Perhaps start last, then see how many people you can overtake type of thing... 😊
You don't owe me, or anyone else in the social media spheres anything. You don't have to answer to anyone else but you. Your health and wellbeing is yours, and yours to share, or not, as you feel happy to. Your health, and your family come first. That's how it should be. All the best with your recovery!
Be careful. I had niggle in my left glute. Rested for a few weeks and went back too quickly. Raced and did my left glute tendinopothy. Several months out. Very frustrating.
I can so understand your going dark when injury strikes. It's bad enough having to cope with enforced rest and frequent recalibration of expectations without having to explain yourself to an audience. You do you, and if that's only posting when there's upbeat positive stuff to share that's fine. We'll cope.
You have been missed - I’m glad that things are starting to look up. Also, this was not a bleak video in any way. It was just great to hear what’s been going on.
Given that most runners know all about injuries, you should not shy away from sharing your set backs. The interesting and inpiring thing is how you overcome and move forward. Further great times lie ahead - 37 is not so old for Marathon running and PBs!
I think it's fair to say anyone criticising you for going dark has no right, you put yourself on a public forum to entertain and inspire, not to be told how you should be displaying yourself. All the best with recovery!
You'll be back Matt, no harm taking a break - you owe nobody an explanation. Take care mate and looking forward to seeing your running videos back here again.
Injuries are a part of everyone's running journey. Tbh, I only watch running vids on UA-cam if my running is going well and believe me plenty of the time it is not. Injuries or lack of time, work, kids etc doesn't feature much in the you tube world. It's far from a negative vid, its a realistic one 🙂
Totally understand this Matt. I do running videos too, but I often have months at a time without a video, in the mean time there have been three or four aborted attempts at videos where it just didn't feel right.
I think what folks are saying is that we all get injured, niggles, whatever, and we look to creator/coaches like you to share how to get through it mentally and physically. It ok that you aren't able to meet that to protect your own health. Take care.
How sad to hear you receive criticism for not posting “the bad times”….. it’s your channel to post as you wish. I’m sure I speak for a vast majority of your followers when I say I enjoy what content you post. In particular when you break down your sessions in detail. Ignore the negative noise, those sad individuals who thrive on seeing “bad times” aren’t happy people. Hope you’re back running soon 👍🏻
Keeping it real is life. Life is not all roses and personally hearing other people's dark sides makes my own personal troubles seem more tolerable. Don't feel bad for keeping it real. You have to crack some eggs to make an omelette.
Solid video Matt. Been watching your videos for quite a while. Always enjoy when you do post. No big deal when you dont. Life happens. Family etc. Life! I am 37 next month and training away towards my goals. Was in best shape i have ever been and then wallop flu! Tapered for a race which i wanted to pb at and wallop felt horrible from gun 2 days later wiped for 10 days! So yes things happen. Looking forward to see the next step. 💪
Best wishes Budd... 37! spring chicken, wait until you get to 54 then you will stop chasing PBs, stop a lot of the speedwork and defo stop running downhill, ya wally. back in the shoes soon..x
I really think you should tell warts and all time as they happen. Especially when you make the big goal claims and then all of a sudden go dark because of injuries.
I hope you recover quickly, but you don’t anybody an explanation. Just concentrate on yourself and we have your wife’s amazing running journey to watch
No strength training ultimately catches up with you. Especially as we get older overloading the body with running will brake it. Spending as much time doing strength as running has kept me injury free for the last 6 years.
Sounds like a piriformis muscle issue, I had a similar problem and piriformis stretches sorted me out pretty quick. Great content, loved your Kenya youtube series!
Lot of respect Matt, you’re the best coach I’ve worked under and your hunger to come back stronger will hold you in good stead🙌🏽
God loves you more than you can conceive. I appreciate your channel, post when you want and what content you want.
Love this video Matt I’ve been watching for a whilst and appreciate you sharing this. I’m looking forward to following whatever is next for you good luck with recovery
I appreciate your honesty and look forward to hearing more when you are ready. good luck
I didn't know it when I started watching, but that really was the video I needed today! Thanks, and good luck with the new stuff too
Great video Matt. One thing for sure is that your best marathon days are ahead of you. This little injury is nothing in the scale of things. You are just a kid in terms of marathon age. Carlos Lopes was also 37 when when he won Olympic gold in 84!

Get well and hope tobsee you running well soon!
Stay strong Matt 💪🏽
Unlucky with the injury, Matt. Heal up soon.
All the best Matt. Take all the time that you need to get everything right for you. Good luck with your recovery.

You do you Matt! I'll be here when you're ready to share.
You need to put your own health first. Injuries are difficult to navigate and definitely come with a mental challenge. Take your time and re-start when YOU feel comfortable. All the best 💪
All the best...from Berlin/Germany 🍀
Strava often feels like one big vanity project. You don't need to post on Strava to be a runner Matt! Hope the rehab goes well 🤞
All the best Matt. Always enjoyed your channel, nobody has a right to demand/expect content though. Take care!
37! I'm 68 - you are just a kid. But seriously, thanks for the update. I will say…you’re just 37 so not over the hill yet!
Thanks for the update , sounds like you have taken stock, reset, re evaluated onwards and upwards . take care and see you when you're back on. 👊
Thank you so much for sharing
Good you are following your body’s signs instead of ignoring it, you’ll bounce back in no time
I’ve got this, right now. Physio thinks it’s proximal hamstring tendinopothy.. where the ham joins the glute. Back in today. I feel your pain, it’s really annoying.. it’s my right leg which is normally my left
Sorry to hear you have something similar. Based on physio advice and symptoms I think this is probably my issue. Hope yours clears up soon.
@ Thanks. It’s so annoying isn’t it. Hope you heal quickly and look after yourself ok
Thanks for sharing Matt 🫶🏽
I hope you can be back running and enjoying it for the sake of it. That being said, you’ve definitely got pbs ahead of you. 37 is nothing

I'm just back after being injured for a year. It is hard missing out with all your running mates.
Totally understand this Matt. I do running videos too, but I often have months at a time without a video, in the mean time there have been three or four aborted attempts at videos where it just didn't feel right.
Sorry to hear this, and I hope you get back to it soon.
I think what folks are saying is that we all get injured, niggles, whatever, and we look to creator/coaches like you to share how to get through it mentally and physically. It ok that you aren't able to meet that to protect your own health. Take care.
Im in the same boat as you... my case is plantar fasciitis though.
Sometimes these injuries are meant to happen so that we can rebuild and come back even stronger 👊
How sad to hear you receive criticism for not posting “the bad times”….. it’s your channel to post as you wish. I’m sure I speak for a vast majority of your followers when I say I enjoy what content you post. In particular when you break down your sessions in detail. Don't rush back . What about a video of you trying some pilates and yoga ? That would be different content 🙂

Does this mean the sub 2:20 will ever happen? Can’t wait for the new content it’s gonna be amazing.
I never understood the strava segment fever 😅
I really think you should tell warts and all time as they happen. Especially when you make the big goal claims and then all of a sudden go dark because of injuries.
But we miss you mate! 😢
I hope you recover quickly, but you don’t anybody an explanation. Just concentrate on yourself and we have your wife’s amazing running journey to watch
Good luck with the recovery Matt - you'll be back stronger than ever I'm sure. I got my Marathon PB at 44 years old, so plenty of life in you yet, ha!
Jeez I thought you were gonna say you'd quit running forever or one of your legs had fallen off. Get well soon, I'm also in rehab city
The criticism isn’t fair, nobody is forced to follow you or watch your videos, you owe nobody anything. Hope you’re back to your best soon.
Take care of yourself.
No strength training ultimately catches up with you. Especially as we get older overloading the body with running will brake it. Spending as much time doing strength as running has kept me injury free for the last 6 years.
