Bootsy knows the James Brown vibe first hand having played bass in his band as a teen. He was so young, James Brown actually had to get permission from Bootsy’s mom to let him go on the road!
Someone pointed out this is a concept album. If you go track by track it's finding love she breaks his heart he disses her then cry's for her back then it goes to they party in Vegas etc...I also want to say I went out and bought 2 CD'S keeping one and giving one to my buddy. I might buy more. People need to hear this!!!!
I think a lot of people don't realize that artists are very meticulous and intentional about the order in which their tracks appear on their albums. Most albums are meant to be played in the order they appear to tell the story, but people have such short attention spans and tend to skip around and just focus on the "singles" or radio hits, unfortunately that missing the bigger picture.
@@dianad3080 so true. It's actually a lost art from alot of artists as well. Instead of making an album that flows from beginning to end. They become this slap dash haberdashery of just attempt hit one after another and it becomes chaotic to listen to...
I have my stank face on the entire time this song plays 😩 This unbridled energy of the pure, nasty FUNK in 777 is just incredible. Not only does this one radiate James Brown vibes in their vocal deliveries and that guitar, but the shouts and way the chorus breaks out with those horns is very Kool & The Gang on “Jungle Boogie” and “Open Sesame” as well! That breakdown in the bridge is the essence of Funk, same with that call-and response in this one. The rhythm section going crazy, the catchy refrains that stick in your ear, the soulful runs from Bruno is just too classic for words. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Brody Brown does his THING on the bass, and he’s been a writing partner for Bruno since the latter’s early days. Glad to have him on board for tracks like this and Leave The Door Open. The only complaint I have with this song is that I wish the funk didn’t stop so soon 🔥🔥 I’m excited for the reaction to Blast Off, definitely a favorite of mine! I’m glad that this series was possible 😭
Me too, Brody has played with Bruno and in his band in the very early days and Brody has said after that whenever Bruno records he always gives him a call although he can get anyone he wants, so he’s always grateful to him.
I’m 69 yrs old and this album hits me at the best time of my life. So many memories! The last album I was this blown away by was Quincy Jones “Back on the block”.
I was thinking, how does this man play the piano so well and (on beat) but then dance like that LoL...and a few seconds later (literally) you said the same thing about yourself 😄. You’re awesome 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. God bless you for sharing your talent with us!
AP repeats the line "Trust your gut" several times during the song; he had that phrase tattooed across his abdomen about a year ago. Trepidation, perhaps, about shifting toward this new venture? Trust your gut, AP, trust your gut!
I love how you talk about WHY we love the songs on this album. To me, there is so much complexity and nuance that the average listener wouldn’t know to listen for. I’ve seen other reactions, and only a handful talk about how the music is put together…and those are the ones giving rave reviews. Then there are others that only get surface deep or don’t understand what this group and album are trying to do, and they aren’t very impressed (or at least not as much as musicians like yourself). I also like how you talk about where the instruments and voices are in the headphones as you’re listening. It made me hear it in a different way and appreciate their level of detail in the finished product.
Appreciate the little take on James Brown. Never really knew just how big and influential he was since it was way before my time. I do remember my dad making me watch a lot of live performances from big artists as a kid, and I remember watching some James Brown concert that was just absurdly good. His band was also so good, all the time.
This is real music. Not even Drake can walk out the house today thinking he's the best. Silksonic just destroyed your conception of who you thought was the best music act in the industry
Btw I'm a great dancer.... And let me tell you!!!!! You can dance so great to this music!!! So many stops and hits and glides and hand movements. My full body is used dancing to this music. This is the best dance album in years !!!
@@danielseelye6005 yes! I didn't want to give more spoilers but that documentary opened my eyes about things and how it shaped music we listen to today.

One cannot simply listen to this song.. and not play the air drums lol and in my head im wearing the best suit, drinking the best drink, smoking the best cigar.. such a fun song.. and another awesome reaction sir
I LOVE this album! I'm right with you...I feel EVERY SONG!!! If you don't feel something in these songs, you must be dead. Truly missing out on the richness of these songs. 😊🥰
Would like to see you react to Bruno Mars live performances. His 24k album at the apollo is fun and the songs are shortened because they had to wrap it up at a certain time. So they cut verses and choruses. But you still get the song and show
Yeah the funk in this cold as ice. The JB influence is ever-present. I’d actually thought it was a nod to The Times 777-9311 which similarly based off a vamp. As always coach, loved the passion in the breakdowns 🤘🏾🤘🏾
This is about gambling in Las Vegas and "777" that lucky number. I'm sure some people who commented between then (11/21) and now have mentioned that by now. And that people who only listened to the music before went back and listened to the actual words. And now a lot of us non-musicians have gotten an education about the music, so I'm thankful you for that.
LOL!, David, "This is some funky, a$$ sh$$!" but, truly it is! that and more!! I cannot pick a favorite, so the album is my favorite!! It's on repeat everywhere, on my speakers, in my car, in my head! ;) Bruno and Anderson, xoxo!!

So excited to see your reaction to blast off. I already know you had to be going crazy. I know I was the first time I heard it. This track has me scrunching my face the whole time.
That breakdown "🎼muh fub wit some money ta blow...Im bout ta buy Las Vegas afta THIS roll..." Gives me "Hicky Burr" which is kinda a musical Easter Egg. Since Q composed BOTH that theme song as well as Sanford & Son **it's the big one!😂**

I enjoy your reviews. You are so animated! I'm fascinated with how pull out, and play, those chords, as well as, the portions with the chords. I look forward to you next review.
Obviously the screams in this song are James Brown influenced but there is also a lot of Kool & The Gang influence in this one, weather it’s the funky horns or the melodic runs on some of those screams.
David, this song is about gambling in a casino. "777" th e preferred result of a slot machine spin. And Anderson says "i gonna buy Las Vegas on the next roll!" Just so you know. Keep up the good work.
It also refers to a plane, flying out to Vegas, so a double entendre. Paak is good at rapping with double meanings. He did something similar in Fly as Me when he said "Boo you up at the Apollo". That can mean , boo you up to be my boo (be my girlfriend, bae) and/or people would get on stage at the Apollo and perform and if they were bad, they would get booed off stage and get escorted off/chased off by a guy/clown with a giant curved hook/cane. The beginning of this song, you can hear the sound of an airplane, so it means both.

When you hit 777 on a slot machine you hit the jackpot! Listening to this song/album makes me feel like I hit the jackpot!
There is so much in this track from Prince's "Lovesexy" era. The stripped-down minimalist instrumentation and strong funk influences in particular.
