Onitsha, the sprawling commercial city in Anambra State Nigeria that has the biggest market in West Africa also has the highest concentration of 5-storey buildings per square meter in Nigeria, and perhaps the whole of Africa doesn't have frequent cases of building collapse like Lagos or the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja among others. This suggests that there are things that town planning authorities, builders, engineers and others in the built environment in Onitsha are getting right that need to be learnt by their professional colleagues in Lagos, Abuja and other cities across Nigeria.

Igbos are known to be honest and straightforward people. And Igbo Man will never use substandard materials to build his home. 💯

that is the truth I could remember in year 2000s the Yorubas were the ones our igbos brothers were calling to build houses for them because they think there Igbo brothers is talking much time and money, but what happens at last is all the building Yorubas where building in Igbo land just after few years the buildings will have cracks, almost collapse, that how igbos stop calling them

Most Igbo men that build houses have the money already down, they are not scrapping around looking for change to complete the building.

The building my mother grow up in Onitcha in 60s is still there. Very strong standing. The material they used in it is crazy. Onitcha buildings are strong. But you will not be comfortable in a Yoruba man’s house because they can’t use real material for building

Its simply corruption, not rocket science.Corruption has not taken hold of nigeria when those buildings in onitsha were constructed.Eliminate corruption from nigeria and the building will stand the test of time.

Any high rise building without deep foundation would face the prospect of collapsing.
Netherland is a nation literarily under water but buildings do no collapse. Venice is a city where travel is done by boats and it has withstood the test of time since 450 AD. Abidjan situated on the coast, is the capital of Ivory Coast and one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. There is hardly the collapse often attached to Nigeria. Nigerians are notorious for cutting corners and employ sub standard methods in most of the things they do.

Waste of time, Mr. The typical Yoruba man would rather choose to walk into the lagoon than emulating from the Igbo.
