Wave race is one of those games that define the GameCube. You cannot talk about GC without it! The graphics still hold up so well! I love when they add elements and weather effects in video games! It’s such a subtle but nice touch! Oh man I didn’t know about the insult feature haha that’s hilarious! Great video my friend!

I agree! Wave Race really was one of those games that many remember fondly, whether on the N64 or GameCube! And yes, I definitely agree that the graphics held up really well! The water physics alone are still mighty impressive, and better than some games nowadays. The weather effects are also incredibly impressive. The insult feature was a nice hidden Easter egg, so I had to show it haha! Glad you enjoyed the video man!

God I’m so sad I missed out on this in the GameCube. I am so nostalgic for Wave Race 64. That game is still beautiful and so is this entry. I need to pick this up. Thanks so much for doing this. I love the free roam feature. Excellent review man, this is 10/10 quality and very thorough.

Wave Race 64 was one of my favorite N64 games, and Blue Storm is still a great game for sure! I definitely recommend picking this up! The visuals hold up incredibly well and the water is still some of the best I’ve seen in a game. Glad you enjoyed the review, and thank you for that compliment on the quality! That means a lot!!

An awesome game to get alongside your GameCube! Yeah, the controls are a little twitchier than the N64 predecessor, but still such a great sequel. Thanks for checking out the review and sharing that memory!

I remember when I was shocked to learn that Wave Race was originally on the Game Boy. I like the addition of the turbo boost with the buoys. My girl Ayumi returns! Although with purple hair... The weather system is super cool. That adds so much to the game and strategizing like you said. The water looks gorgeous. Riding that Dolphin is pretty slick. Like you said that announcer demoralizing you is hilarious... lots of men pay for that type of stuff lol Great review, they need to bring back Wave Race!

    • @GameCubeGalaxy

A lot of people tend to be shocked to find out Wave Race started on the Game Boy lol. The turbo boost was a nice addition that added a layer of strategy as well. Yes, Ayumi Stewart does return from Wave Race 64 (as you mentioned in your Girls in Gaming video)! I loved the weather system in this game. I found it clever how they implemented another strategizing element to the gameplay here. The dolphin is fun to use, and the condescending announcer Easter egg is hilarious! Glad you enjoyed the review, and I agree that they really need to bring Wave Race back!!

Right from the get-go, you went and blew my socks off with the nostalgia Jetski that is the opening track on Wave Race 64 😭 Blue Storm? I looooved it as a sequel. Super challenging, but super fun still.
The Game Boy title?... yeah, I might pick it up just to complete the collection lol.
Thanks for the enjoyable video! 🙏🏼
I had to go back and hit edit to say this. Dude, your editing and script are top-notch. You caused me to double-take when I looked at how many followers you have. Your video quality is that of those who have several thousand followers. Keep up the amazing work!

Wow, that compliment is beyond humbling! Stating that you feel my editing and script are “top-notch” and that it’s the level of what you would expect from a channel with “several thousand followers” is seriously one of the best compliments I’ve received on the channel! I’m really glad you thoroughly enjoyed the review and that it hit the nostalgia notes! While Wave Race 64 is still my favorite installment, Blue Storm is really enjoyable for sure. The Game Boy title is still worth getting to complete the collection, and an important part to the 64 game even happening. Wave Race: Blue Storm for gamecube was my first Wave Race experience. I loved it as a kid. Beat and unlocked everything. A couple years ago I got Wave Race 64 for my N64 based on everyone saying it is the better game. While I can appreciate it as a historical piece it is not nearly as good as Blue Storm. This is a great example of the old adage:
"Nostalgia is one hell of a drug". If you don't have those memories of Wave Race 64 coloring your view...Blue Storm is objectively the better game. Of course I am biased towards Blue Storm...but, my goodness, when I play them side by side I am not understanding how someone could chose Wave Race 64 as the better experience without being high on nostalgia. Thanks for the review. Enjoyed every minute.

Growing up with Wave Race 64, Blue Storm had a lot to live up to expectation-wise for me. Even though I prefer the soundtrack and controls of the N64 original, Blue Storm is still such a great game (and sequel) that I always return to. Blue Storm does improve on so many areas as well, like more content, characters, and beautiful visuals. I love both games...and still wish Nintendo would seriously bring this series back already! Good review. Have always been a huge fan of the N64 Wave Race and this is basically the only N64 game i can still enjoy as much as back in the day. They really nailed this one.
For some strange reason, i also owned the GameCube game, but never really played it.
So last week, i decided to complete this game on my Odin via emulator. But to make things easier i used save states to complete the harder difficulty levels. So i played certain races like 30+ times in a row, just to end up in first place on every course.
Doing so, a lot of things became noticeable to me, why i find this game to be inferior to its N64 counterpart and why i always thought that some things felt off in this game…
And while i still think, that it is a good racer, it is actually frustratingly flawed and could have easily been greatly improved with a couple of changes…
    - The riders feel less agile on their jetski. The analogue controls are a bit stiff and the addition of the L/R buttons for harder turns is basically no improvement
    - Instead of gliding over water, it feels like you are swimming through sticky honey…
    - The wake of the opponents in front of you impacts your own movement/controls way too much and can easily ruin your run without any chance to react properly
    - The opponents are way too aggressive and their bumping into you from behind is regularly ruining your runs which makes winning quite luck depending at times
    - There‘s a lot of rubber banding going on and at certain points of the race the computer simply decides that you get attacked/overtaken by some opponents - no matter how perfectly you ride. Feels like cheap cheating…
    - The tracks are generally bit uninspired and are mostly not designed for 8 riders (too much chaotic bumping going on)
    - Generally, the reduction to 4 riders would have been very beneficial for the dynamic of the races
    - One capital flaw in every racing game also occurs here: Walls/guard rails react very magnetic, so when bumping into them you don’t bounce of directly but somehow stick to them. And some corners/obstacles have a real bad collision detection and immediately make you stuck. Pretty frustrating as half of the tracks tend to be rather narrow.
    - Also the riders fall from their jetskis a bit too easily
So overall, winning in Blue Storm is way less depending on skill and not so crisp controls make the N64 version my clear favorite.
But on the positive side, the graphics are pretty good, the courses do provide several versions/routes plus interesting shortcuts, dynamic weather and the boost is a good tactical addition.
Sorry for the long post. Must have been my frustration with the game for 6 days in a row…😂

Glad you enjoyed the review! And no worries about leaving a detailed comment with your thoughts on the game! While I do love the N64 original more for several reasons (between what I mentioned in the review and your reasons), Blue Storm was still a game I kept revisiting back in the day and wanted to adapt to knowing that the control physics were different. I just wish Nintendo would bring this series back already! I’m curious if you’ve checked out 1080 Avalanche by chance? I personally find that one to be better than the N64 original (which I also really enjoyed). Thanks again for checking out the review!

    • @mrkarbon
      @mrkarbon Рік тому +1

@@GameCubeGalaxy Yes, i do own both 1080 games. Played the N64 version a bit and added Avalanche to my collection last year - but only tried it for a couple of minutes so far.
Well, i guess 1080 on the N64 suffers a bit from the same problems as the other Nintendo racers Blue Storm or Stunt Race FX. Fun games, but their controls really need to get used to and are not that accessible as typically expected from Nintendo games.
Always found it unnecessarily complicated to pull of twists and how to properly land jumps in 1080 always puzzled me…
But a good idea to revisit both 1080 titles next. Especially to finally check out Avalanche.
      Cheers from Germany…

Unlike the version for N64 unfortunately I'm never got into the GCN version. The GCN-version was always too dark for me compared to the N64 game. The N64 version had such a nice tropical, bright track design. In the GCN version, even tracks like Southern Iceland, were all so colorless and dark compared to the N64 game.
The setting of the game ruined the game for me. But I can understand that there is a great game under it.

I can see why the GCN version was harder to get into versus the N64 predecessor. @@GameCubeGalaxy Yea, I checked both Riptide GP Renegade and Aqua Moto Racing Utopia last night and neither has water that look or move as good as either WaveRace game.
WaveRace64 has great color and conceptual level/stage design, and WaveRace BlueStorm had the wettest, most texturally/reflectively surreal water with great physics and ripples and splashes, the storm building was great.
Hopefully, that Nintendo exec who claimed on stage several years ago, to have loved WaveRace, and that they are working on a new one, wasn’t just blowing smoke up our tailpipes.
When/if Nintendo has outdone the modern water physics and water appearance of all previous games … they should make TWO new games, one more realistic, and title it “WaveRace: ____” and another mascot cartoon version, Mario WaveRace.
