They got that good by practicing 6 hours a day for years. Comparing them to geeks would suggest that they excel in their fields but struggle in other facets of life. These guys are all happily married family men, husbands and fathers. If it sounds to complex then it is not for you. I like the fact that you can listen to a song of theirs 10 times over and discover something new every time. It's not for everyone obviously but that's why there's so much to choose from out there.

The jamming you refer to is primarily a live thing for the crowds' pleasure. That said, some of the best solos are in live shows only, both from JordanRudess (keyboardist) and John Petrucci (Guitarist). They even have some duets that are insane and incredible (In the Name of God) on their album that are amped to a new level live. HTH.
