Pareil.

I can understand why Dune does not resonate with today’s reader. It was first published in 1965, and gender norms have evolved over the last 50+ years, for the better. I personally stopped reading Sci-fi and fantasy for about 20 years. When I returned to the genre last year, I found it fascinating to see the shift in gender norms, sexuality and world views. I am unsure how I would rate Dune today; and that’s OK.

I finally took the leap and read Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. I don't read too much sci-fi, and I've never read a book by him before, so I picked it up from my library purely based on your recommendation. It was AMAZING!!! I loved every second of it, and I cannot wait for the sequel!!

I've been trying to check out more classic science fiction books lately because I've always been interested but intimidated but your videos have been inspiring me to give them a try anyway! I was definitely scared even more though because one of the first books I read was The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin which is NOT beginner friendly, but recently I read The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney and it's so incredibly pulpy and ridiculous that I can't get over the fact that it even got published, let alone that it's a classic. I kid you not, when the book introduces the love interest the narrator in all seriousness describes her as a having a "fine, beautifully fleshed skeleton." On the upside I find classic science fiction much less intimidating now.
Anyway, I'm glad your making new videos! I'm looking forward to more science fiction and other book reviews! Congratulations on a good recovery!

Since you read Daisy Jones & The Six I finally get to vent a little about it! One thing that no one seems to have noticed (at least not in the reviews I've seen) is that Daisy was pretty much a Mary Sue character with a drug problem. Because of her addiction I think people didn't want to see her that way but other than being described as beautiful and having perfect hair and a singing voice that she never had to work on to improve she was also said to never wear shoes, walking around on the LA Strip with NO SHOES on. That was so goofy. And at the end where Camila went to talk to her was written so unrealistically I laughed out loud. I think the interview format was great and the story was pretty original and kept my interest but there were things in it that kept it from being a better book. There was so much focus on the female characters that the men might as well have been cardboard cutouts so there was an imbalance there. Too much time spent on virtue signaling that could have been spent making the story longer, which I know your complant was that the book was too short. So not the masterpiece other channels are claiming it is, just a good book that could have been better.

  • @JennV-B

I read Daisy Jones and the Six too and first I started the actual book but I just couldn't get into it (and I was majorly hyped and looking forward to it) but then I switched to audiobook and I liked it! Like you said it was too short. I found the story lacking. I really wanted to love it like her last book but it was just "good" not great. I'm having trouble getting into Nevernight. I've only struggled through the first chapter. Should I keep going or do you think it would be a good audiobook??

I didn't try the audiobook but let me tell you... the first chapter is weeeeeird. Things pick up fast after that. The footnotes take a little while to get used to (you could skip them but I ended up really liking them!) but it's all worth it!

Dune is a book that requires at least two rereads. And Dune is a book that was written in the mid 60s, and it's probably the most feminine sci-fi book you'll find of that era, written by a man. Paul wasn't born to be more powerful than all the women. A man was required to be born because they needed the male perspective in order to learn everything, the history of the world. I can understand why you'd missed the point since it's a book that requires exclusive attention and patient reading. It's sad really, cause this series will take you places you've never been before if you give it the chance. I hope your future sci-fi reads are more to your taste!

Hi Emily! Two (award-winning Fantasy) book recommendations, as I've been watching your vids for a while now:
The Curse of Chalion, Lois McMaster Bujold
    Perdido Street Station, China Mieville
    :)

I like going in the order of hate to love. Books u hate then the ones u love. Save the best for last.

I didn't care for Dune either. Thought it got super stupid when the dude started riding the worms. Had never heard of The Sparrow or Spin but they're on my radar now.

I'm currently reading Spin and I am 100 pages in. I liked the characters so far. I think they are really interesting. Especially Jason 🤣
