I'm here for the Stephen King video. 🖐 My tbr for October is gonna be detective stories/murder mysteries. I'll leave the horror and spooky stories to someone who isn't afraid of them.😉

Talk about no self control-im rewatching all your recent videos and making a list of all the books I need! I feel my current tbr judging me. What's a thousand more books? Who does it hurt?(except me when the pile collapses on me. It's how I'd want to go. And my wallet)

I really enjoyed the writing and the story in NOS4A2 😍 I read Salem's Lot a while ago but I remember enjoying it. And I just read Gone Girl recently and I thought it was pretty overhyped but still worth reading (I think you're gonna like the social commentary) good luck with all the reading :)

Okay so I literally jumped on my chair when you pulled out The Goldfinch. I watched the movie last week and became obsessed with it so I started reading it the next day ( I know I'm supposed to read it first but I found out that O enjoy the movie more when I have not read the book) and it was fantastic, maybe my favorite book of the year + I read it in less than 3 days and my copy has 800+ pages. In conclusion,I loved it so much and I can't stop thinking about it, hope you like it too

So.... I read Gone Girl last year and had the complete wrong reaction to it. It was supposed to be dark and edgy and I found the whole thing hilarious because the characters were both so dumb and horrible to each other. I actually did enjoy it, but I laughed through the whole thing. Hopefully you enjoy it!

This video is very interesting to me, since I never plan ahead (unless a series of novels I like to read are all released one after another) so it is nice to see a different approach to "what to read next?".
I'm a fan of Stephen King ever since I have read Firestarter (far too young an age, we were visiting family friends and as usual I checked their library and found that one) I have read The Salem's Lot when much older but for some reason it got me so so scared that I had to sit next to people while I was reading it and it gave me nightmares for a long time (I was an early teen at the time) I have recently listened to the audio version and I loved it in a different way as a middle aged adult (not that scared though, it made me smile to remember the younger me not being able to look out of a window at night).
Early Stephen King novels are better as far as I'm concerned (and not due to age, I have re read them as an adult and still like them a lot better than his new ones). However after reading "On Writing" I learned that he was under the influence when writing almost all. I remember reading that he can't even remember writing Cujo (an excellent read but I still have not found the courage to read it again).
I have to exclude Dr. Sleep, though I think it is almost as good as The Shining (to me, a masterpiece of the genre) despite being a later novel.
A later novel that I liked a lot but does not get a lot of mention is called Lisey's Story.
The Goldfinch is kind of different than The Secret History (but there are some posh people in it :) ) I don't even want to watch the movie since I don't think it is a novel that can be filmed properly - it is such delicious prose that the story is bound to lose something valuable in the visual adaptation.
Sorry for the long post and again thank you for all your videos and recommendations.

I did like this ok but I think that I’d add that this is basically a romance book with some magic. I didn’t know that going in and I was so disappointed because I’m not a big romance fan and neither is Emily. I did finish but never continued the series. Did you read them all? Does it get less romancy and more magical?

I knew someone would rec this and wanted to say absolutely NOT! It’s not horrible and I would actually like to try continuing with the series, but it’s 100% a romance book and I don’t know why it’s not classified more as PNR. Also thought it was rather boring and had kind of flowery language which I think Emily would hate

I only own Horns by Joe Hill and haven't read anything by him yet. But I definitely wanna start reading his books asap! I read 'Salem's Lot in November 2018 - and it wasn't my favourite of King's books (that I've read so far). But I appreciate it for what it was, hope you'll like it!

I totally agree with you on Australian accents! I always think I speak English pretty well but then I'll watch a video and the speaker is Australian and I'm like "aaaaaahhh I hate it!" haha.
I've seen The Goldfinch everywhere lately (probably because of that movie coming out), so maybe I'll pick it up, too. My biggest priority for fall is Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, and also Scythe and Thunderhead cause i'm going to a Neal Shusterman signing in October!

The main difference between American English and Australian English are the vowels ! (Linguistics student here). So if you can listen to a podcast on a slower speed that would probably help. The accent is considered ‘broader’ and is quite difficult if you’re used to American/British accents ! X

  • @DarkMistyDay

I read The Goldfinch earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Parts of it were a little long but still a pretty great story overall. It's memorable, that's for sure. Parts of it were just hard to read about because they were so sad but the ending was profound. And I really liked 'Salem's Lot, more than most people seem to. Not his best book but kept my attention and definitely worth your time :)
My fall reads - Paradise Lost by John Milton, Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes, Hotel Iris by Yoko Ogawa and Dexter by Design by Jeff Lindsay.

Discovery of Witches is really great, though it has a heavy influence on romance and history, so it might not be for everyone.

The Goldfinch is on my Autumn reading list. So is Blood of Elves & Time of Contempt, East of Eden, Bleak House, Middlemarch, Rose Madder, The Count of Monte Cristo, and I restarted IT for the second time. I have started reread before, but you know how long that book is and I take breaks in between readings of books that length. I got NOS4A2 from library and got very far into, but still a decent chunk to read. I was feeling stressed about my books being due back and didn't want distractions for Victober (Victorian Literature month hosted by Katie from Books and Things.). I admit I enjoyed it while reading it, but didn't think about it when i put it down.

My witchy rec. is a bit of a stretch but it's this world that is so full of magic and it is just my favorite thing ever. It's sci-fi, it's urban fantasy, it's middle grade. Basically when I was a child there were these comics, now turned into graphic novels (same content just in the form of a graphic novel) called W.I.T.C.H. They are not typical witches, they do have powers, there are five girls and each girl has control over one magical element and basically save the world and other worlds at danger. It's called W.I.T.C.H. because the first letters of their names forms this acronym. But it is so magical and entertaining, you won't regret it.

And next i'm gonna read (probably since i'm a mood reader) The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood (a retelling of the Odyssey but by Penelope's perspective) and a book i have in my lenguage with a sort of stories by HP Lovecraft. I want all the videos you have suggested. Bring them on =)

One of the best witch movies out there is The Craft! It’s getting a reboot which I don’t know how to feel about but it is such a great movie! I’m also reading NOS4A2 right now and is it weird to say that I kind of like the show better?

I'm definitely getting to Haunting of Hill House this October because shame, shame... I've never read it. And I picked up a few sf masterworks that I'd like to read this fall. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are The Body Snatchers and Only Human (I think?).

I can’t wait for your Stephen King videos. I live his work, I started reading his books 3 years ago (I have only read 15 of his books so far).
Would love to hear your opinions on them :)

I enjoyed La Belle Sauvage well enough, but it was also kinda pointless its true, I don't really like the concept of prequels I find because you always know how it ends already....
but that brings me to my fall tbr:
Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell, released tomorrow and I will pick it up as soon as I can
The Secret Commonwealth - can not wait!
    Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
The Toll by Neil Schustermann - also can not wait for that!
The Fowl Twins by Eoin Colfer - but I am currently rereading the Artimes Fowl books so I guess those as well
I also really wanna get to the next trillogy in the "realm of the elderlings" series by Robin Hobb so Ship of Magic is on my fall tbr. I also wanted to get to book 1 of the song of the lioness by tamora pierce, and the love interest by cale dietrich mostly because it is a spin on the whole love triangle fiasco in every other book and I am curious
I think thats all, I will mostly just pick up what I am in the mood for otherwise
