"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" is an old - old country gospel song. Written early 1900s and made popular by the Carter Family in the 1930s. So the Dirt Band "arrangement " might be somewhat original, but not being 'covered'
This country music but who says that you only have to listen to one type of music. I listen to everything from bethoven, motzart, five finger death punch, metálica, 50 cent, master p, SPM, to Romeo Santos, Daddy Yankee. I don't know why you all have that mentality
I love this song. Please listen to their recording of "Mr. Bojangles". It is their signature song. Not recorded originally by them, but arguably the best version of the song. I promise you'll love it.👍👍 Edit: If you want to hear a fantastic Country band from California, listen to anything by Highway 101. They had a female lead named Paulette Carlson, and boy could she belt them out. Somewhere Tonight, The Bed You Made For Me, Whiskey If You Were A Woman, and many more. 👍👍
This band goes back in various lineups to the mid 60s, longer than I do. They started out as a jug band. I saw them in the late 80s, not long after this song was a big hit. They were playing my small-ish town fairgrounds, believe it or not, right after a rodeo. They were fantastic. Those guys could seriously jam on country, blues and rock. What stood out the most to me was the killer harmonica jams. It's a special memory for me cause I was with my Dad (RIP). It was a good day.
One of my personal favs from NGDB Is a song called Dance Little Jean. But by far the best work they ever did was their Albums Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and Circle 2. These are true masterpieces, especially Circle 1. Guys, these albums were a collection of Bluegrass Ledgends who came together and recorded with the Dirt Band, all throughout tge album you can hear stories and conversations being held in a livingroom environment. When i say Bluegrass legends i mean people like, Johnny Cash's Mother n Law, Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs. The Circle 2 album was recorded tge same way nearly a,Decade later with some of the artists from the first one and some younger artists at the time like, John Denver, Michael Martin Murphy, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Jerry,Douglas, Mark O Conner, Roy Husky Jr. Newgrass Revival, and several others.
They have 3 circle albums. They are about a decade apart or more . Each one has past, present and future bluegrass artists singing. This is the unbroken circle.
Love the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band! In 1974, when I was 20, I was on a flight from Baltimore to San Francisco that made a stop in Denver and this group of guys got on and 2 of them sat next to me. It was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and we talked the whole way. They were so cool! I was catching a flight from SF to Hawaii and they walked me to my connection and saw me off. Really nice guys. And cute as hell!! 😍
@@trinagilbert2409 oh man. I just pulled it up on youtube and realised I've heard this song before. Hit me just as hard as the first time I heard it. All I can say here is that it speaks to me of the person I love most in life who suffers greatly and that I am unable to truly ease that suffering. It's a beautiful song, and at the same time absolutely gut wrenching.
Have you ever heard such a happy tune? The smiles on your faces says it all. Just a great band with an appealing tune that makes you start smiling and moving. Great memory. Loved your reactions. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
In the 1970s a little rock band, nitty-gritty dirt band, sought out the Bluegrass legends of the time, mother May Bell Carter, Doc Watson, Jimmy Martin, And many many more to pay homage and learn from them. The album is named Will the Circle be unbroken, pure americana magic
Yay!!! I knew you'd love this song!! This brings back memories of summer days of my childhood. Running in the fields, forts in the woods, swimming in the lake, watching the sunset and street lights turn on meant it was time to head home... 🌅🌄🏔️ Please revisit Paul Davis, America, Little River Band, and The Eagles. And consider Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town by Kenny Rogers. Love you guys keep smiling!! 🥰
love the dirt band. saw them live a few times. great group of guys. my recommendations for you are " Dance, Little Jean" , "Mr. Bojangles", "Partners, Brothers and Friends", "Stand A Little Rain"
This is a song written by Wendy Waldman and Jim Photoglo, and recorded by American country music group The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with Jimmy Ibbotson singing lead released in 1970.
The singer on this track is Jimmy Ibbotson. He is originally from Pennsylvania... but he can twang like anything. Other Nitty Gritty Dirt Band tracks you should try are: Dance Little Jean, Rippling' Waters, Long Hard Road, and their recording of the Bruce Springsteen song called Cadillac Ranch. Good stuff.
Every time I went to a staff party in my home town of Regina, Saskatchewan, we ALWAYS had to play this song and two-step/line-dance to it. Thank you for playing this song! My Dad's favourite country band is Nitty Gritty, and they are AWESOME! You guys are cool!
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released an album called "Will the circle be unbroken" that featured an array of artists like Earl Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Randy Travis and Doc Watson, Capturing those artists while they were still around. A great storytelling song from that album is "Tennessee Stud" with Doc Watson.
Have seen them 10 times live, last year even and they still sound amazing. Since you love Linda Ronstadt, check out An American Dream-she sings with them on it. Too many more to list..
If you guys want to continue down the good old country path, I highly recommend Mel McDaniel's "Louisiana Saturday Night"... it's a toe tappin' feel good song and I think you both would really like it.
I always thought of NGDB as a 70s band, but they had a lot of 80s songs too (this one was from 1987) . I think you'd love their song "Mr. Bojangles," a CONSUMMATE 70s song. I also recommend "An American Dream" (when they were simply called The Dirt Band". The singer's name on this track is Jimmy Ibbotson.
My all time favorite group. Given the money I'd follow them anywhere. I drove from Anacortes, Washington to Libby, Montana to see them do one show in the high school gym. :-) They started in 1966 and they're still touring. Love them - great music. Especially the first Circle album.
It's still one of the most popular songs you will ever hear in "Country" venues...any band or DJ can just play the lead in and the entire crowd will sing it all the way through.
The NGDB came out along the same time as John Denver and the Eagles. Some of their hits are "Dance Little Jean", "Partners, Brothers and Friends" and "I've Been Lookin'". The Nitty Gritty Dirt band are amazing! You gotta do more of them! Listen to their version of Mr. Bojangles, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and anything from their Record titled Will The Circle Be Unbroken! Also listen to their big hit The American Dream!
The best song they ever did is one that you literally will never hear on the radio. It's called "Stand a little Rain". It wasn't a big hit and the lead singer didn't even sing it but every one I play it for asks who it is and loves the song.
@@grievousangelic Yes. I had never heard the song until I saw them live some years ago. After seeing them live I had to hear the studio recording. I was shocked by how great it sounded...and even more shocked that it hadn't been a massive hit. I don't recall ever hearing it being played on the radio. Such a shame, I never get tired of hearing it.
Linda Ronstadt was good friends with the people in this band and they had a hit with the song called “an American dream” and Linda sings on it with them so you should definitely take a listen
This was my dad's favorite song. I could see him dancing while I listened to this. Thank you for reacting to this and bringing back good memories for me.
Amber, that SMILE and swaying in your chair, says it ALL. We can see that this song brings some fond memories back while enjoying the music itself. Think it's time for you to get out there and make some memories fishing with your family. That's my favorite way of making memories with my family and friends. That's why my profile pic has me holding a fish! Just watching your face light up to this song is worth the watch! Keep them reaction videos coming! LOVE IT!
I am so glad you reacted to this song, it is one of my favorites. The video of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" performed with so many country music legends it the next you should react to.
The Descriptions in this song are so thick that you can almost smell the dirt and the worms. I saw the title and I knew that Amber would love it. Their highest charting song was Mr. Bojangles, which hit #9 in 1971.
Love this song! Had no clue the were from SoCal! They sound just like real country boys! Anyways, glad you reacted to this, and glad you liked it! Okay, I know how you guys love a song that tells a story, so I have a good recommendation for you. The song is "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Such a great song. Make sure to watch a lyric video so you can be sure to follow the story. I'm confident you guys will like it, just make sure to bring tissues!
@@sharonpate5481 Me too. And that’s the one I first heard. My ex-wife and her entire family were Horton fans. But The Dirt Band’s cover is also very good. A close second.
Brought back memories! This was one of our songs! I was a rockin city girl who met a country boy early in 1994. We spent so much time just drivin in the country, fishin, dancin in the middle of some back woods gravel road, and talking about everything under the sun (and especially the moon). We married 6 months after we met. We've been married for 28 years. With 6 kids and 5 grandsons, trust that we still go "fishin in the dark" even in our fifties! Thank you for doing this one. I nearly cried with the memories and sentimentality!
This is one of those songs that can turn a sour day around. The Dirt Band is a legendary band and their "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" Album is a classic and the title song is full of legendary singers. For more California (Bakersfield) Sound, check out some early Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, The Byrds, or The Desert Rose Band, to name a few.
When you do "Mr Bojangles" make sure it's the album version with the interview (including Teddy the dog) as the intro. One of the most beautiful and heart-tugging transitions in recorded music.
The NGDB was formed in Long Beach, CA (a port city in the LA metro area) in 1966. I think some/most of the original members went to the same high school there. There have been quite a few changes in personnel over the years. I read somewhere that the band recently retired from touring.
Glad to see you react to this great band! One of my favorites. And so many great musicians have been a part of this band through the years, including Jackson Browne. Love both your channels, and keep enjoying the music!
I was a kid in the 70's and on Saturdays my sister and I had many chores to do every week. We always listened to these guys while we worked. Made quick work of it.
My husband i have been together for 22 years and every time this song comes on we stop look for each other and then sing for each other with all the action emulating fishing laying in the grass etc love it and makes awesome memories for us
My first concert in high school on my 18th birthday, it was close by my little home town in a neighboring college town (Alva, OK). We had a good time, went with my best friend. Mr. Bojangles is one of their hits, should watch them live too, lots of fun. The next concert we wanted to go to was Janis Joplin and the Holding Company, well she died a couple of weeks before - but that concert went on and it just wasn't the same...just missed out on getting to see her.
Wow , I haven't heard about this band for at least 25years . My father inlaw was a big country fan and often play this band . He introduced me to Waylon Jennings . Thanks Sam , R.I.P .
When I was in 10th grade (1970), I lived in So Calif and they came to my high school and put on an awesome concert. I'll never forget it. I was soooo excited cuz they were popular on the radio. Maybe one of them went to Verdugo Hills High...idk...but it was incredible for a 15 yr old girl. Lol. Great reaction guys. You're my favorite reactors. God bless you always!!!
I have danced to this at MANY wedding receptions over the decades - and you have to do all of the actions to the chorus. And I just sand every word of it. Could probably sing it backwards - lol.
PARTNER, BROTHER, AND FRIENDS , DANCE LITTLE JEAN, MR. BOJANGLES, AND ANYTHING OFF OF THE WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN VOL. II ARE ABSOFREEKING A MUST HEAR
TNGDB have a lot of song covers that I tend to think of as the definitive versions. They include Mr. Bojangles, House at Pooh Corner (written by Kenny Loggins), and Some of Shelly's Blues (written by Michael Nesmith).
Some of Shelly's Blues is a great one for a sweet song with that country twang....love it!! I made some cassettes from their Dirt, Silver and Gold album set, and wore them out driving to and from college and singing my head off.🙂 Great country/bluegrass music, both super old remakes and newer stuff. And yes, Jay and Amber they have banjo AND harmonica, lol. Please dig out some of the older stuff recommended in the comments and give them a listen. I think you will love them. Another good one covered by them is Rocky Top.
These guys have some of the most amazing vocal harmonies and this one was billed as the "Song for the Summer" when it was released. Another of those for a different year was Alan Jackson's song "It's 5:00 Somewhere", featuring Jimmy Buffett. These were songs that became instant "hits" based on the time of year that they were released.
"Ripplin' Waters" is another great song by the NGDB. One you can sit back and close your eyes to. People are recommending Mr. Bojangles. Theirs is a great cover. But, David Bromberg's live version is the best. (David used to tour and play with Jerry Jeff for a couple of years. He tells the story behind the song.)
Absolutely love this song! As a keen fisherman, camper, and country boy, this song takes me back to my roots. That harmonica really made this song special.
this sounds like a tune to dance with your special person; on a night of good food , acting goofy and having fun. two lovers having fun with each other
Just a bit of trivia, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was the first American band to tour the Soviet Union back in 1977. That was where I saw them perform while I was serving as a Marine Embassy Guard in Moscow.
As I replied to another comment, another great bluegrass fishin’ song is Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers’ “Yellow Backed Fly”. It’s a great story song. That group is great. And BTW, The Dirt Band *started* So Cal. But they have had lots of members. They started like 60 years ago. Many members have been through. And some have been from many other places. And they moved from So Cal and lived in Colorado for quite some time. Their cover of Steve Goodman’s “Colorado Christmas” is just beautiful and now one of my favorite Christmas songs. I just saw them live for my birthday two days ago in Stockton (Central Valley, California) at the Bob Hope Theater. They were amazing and they played “Fishin’ In The Dark” among many others. Jimmie Fadden is the guy playing harmonica on this and everything they ever did. He has been with them since the beginning and also plays drums - usually at the same time he’s playing harmonica! Here’s a link to “Yellow Backed Fly”. You will love this song. ua-cam.com/video/cdyvVbqC4Iw/v-deo.html
So Amber. Have you heard/reacted to "Come On Down To My Boat" by Every Mothers Son. That tune uses that exact phrase re: a fisherman's daughter. Used to have the NGDB album Will The Circle Be Unbroken but took up to the vinyl vampire some time years ago. NGDB is a one of a kind band. PS, we say "crick" around here too, not "creek". At least we older folk still do! Nice reaction. Thanks!.
Will the Cicle be Unbroken is a fantastic album, they play each song with a different legend of blue grass or country music. Best part of the album is they leave the tape running in between songs so you really get a feel for being in the recoding studio with them definitely worth a listen..
😮I love the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. My favorite song by them is Mr. Bo Jangles. To many memories!!!! Thank you for all the wonderful music you two react to. Great job!
You used to ask about bluegrass recommendations. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band put out one of the all time best blue grass records called Will the Circle Be Unbroken, with all the great old time country artists in Nashville (for example Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, Mother Maybelle Carter, and Doc Watson, for starters) back in the early 70s. A must album for true blue grass fans.
The Dirt Band is awesome. I've seen them live many times. They do a great show. Jim Ibbotson sings lead on this song. Jimmie Fadden handles harmonica and drumming duties with Jeff Hanna on lead guitar and Bob Carpenter on keyboards. The Dirt Band is a great band with a deep catalog. Lots of wonderful songs. Jeff co-wrote (and the Dirt Band first recorded) the song "Bless the Broken Road" made so famous by Rascal Flatts. These guys are amazing entertainers, and well worth seeing if they tour anywhere near you. Love the reaction. Peace!
Their album "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" brings together some of America's greatest country and bluegrass artists. Listen to "Tennessee Stud" by NGDB and Doc Watson for a treat.
This video was hard for me to get through. But I did hit the thumbs up. For the first time since 2005, I was able to hear this song without tears. My nephew was three when he drowned and this song was played at his funeral. I had never heard it before that. It's just the catchy kind of tune children love though and my brother said it was his favorite so that's why it was played. That was a really hard time for my entire family and the kind of event that changes the entire family.
Great choice for your intro to the NGDB! That’s my favorite song of theirs. Second favorite is “Don’t You Hear Jerusalem Moan” studio version. It’s bluegrass and largely instrumental but I have put it on repeat many a time.
I've always loved this song since it came out in the 80's, but I never knew who sang this song, so thanks for reacting to it! :) Another country song you might enjoy is Swingin' by John Anderson. It was such a huge hit everyone in school got tired of hearing it, the radio played it so much. Lol. Great song, though. :)
This is the first song I bust out every year when spring fever hits!! Another great song that paints a similar picture is "Sugar Magnolia" by The Grateful Dead.
If you need another fishing song, Brad Paisley's "I'm gonna miss her" is the epitome of every fisherman's (and fisherwoman) home life.
That song in funny as he'll. You gotta listen to it.
That song is hilarious! And Brad is a kick ass singer, song writer, and guitar player!
She would love "Just Fishin" by Trace Adkins also. Great father-daughter song.
Yes absolutely - but they MUST watch the OFFICIAL video - it tells the whole hilarious story.
Brad Paisley's Ticks is a good choice also.
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" is one of their best. It has been covered by lots of country, bluegrass, and gospel singers.
A beautiful collaboration with a lot of old time bluegrass performers. Just listened to it today, I kid you not.
Yes. Please do that song
Both of the entire Circle albums are great! Fantastic collaborations with other great musicians! ❤

Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Mr. Bojangles"!! The best cover of "Mr. Bojangles" was by Sammy Davis Jr.! The original was by Jerry Jeff Walker.
Great band. You should check out their version of "Mr. Bojangles" . A real classic.
I had the pleasure of working with them when I was at UA Records. Great group of talented musicians and nice men. Still making great music
Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time
No matter how many times you hear it, this song just never gets old!
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band! Is just a fantastic group their Rendition of Mr.Bojangles is one of my favorite songs of all time!
I love this song. Brings back so many great memories.
Great song by an amazing group!!
Their cover of The Battle of New Orleans is a must listen
Yes!
I like Johnny Horton’s version. And Whispering Pines is a great one ☮️❤️👵🏼
@@sharonpate5481 Me too. And that’s the one I first heard. My ex-wife and her entire family were Horton fans. But The Dirt Band’s cover is also very good. A close second.
Another fun-named band is Quicksilver Messenger Service. The song "Fresh Air" is a good place to start. It's a real vibe song.
Effing awesome live!!!
Love this band. Have seen them live. Partners, Brothers and Friends is great,
Dance Little Jean and Mr Bojangles are two of their songs you really have to listen to! They are awesome
This song never gets old.. I was a young boy, maybe 10 or 11 when this song began playing on the radio. I'm 52 now and still love this song..
Wow I didn't think this song was that old lol I remember it from my childhood and I'm 42.
@chestylarue475 It is.. lol Got to be at least 40 years since it first began playing on the radio
LOVE this song!!! So upbeat and happy ❤ Grew up in NYC so never did any fishin in the dark; hopefully one day!
I got to see them in concert, most recently in Belle Plaine, Kansas. Superb!
Amber would cry tears of happiness at their song, "Dance Little Jean". So sweet.
This is my all time favorite country song! It takes me back to highschool Senior year 1991 hangin out with my best friends. Such good times.
Absolutely love this song!!!!!
Thank you so much for reminding us of this song. I loved it!!!
Always loved this song. Every party I went to when I was in high school played this song at least once. Ozarks. 😄🤷🏻♀️
In my bar band days I've played this song soooooooo many times, but I love it.
Sooo good! They had some great hits!! I think y'all have seen a little of Home Free.... they did a Mashup of this with Boondocks. It's soooo good!! 🥰🥰
My little brother and now wife used to go fishing. I had them play this at their wedding. You should fo Brad Paisley fishing song. Its hilarious
Ripplin Waters is one of my all time favs
Rippling Waters is my favorite song of theirs.

I forgot the other good ngdb song "American dream"....and there's a lot more to hear
Home Free the a cappella country band famous for Man of Constant Sorrow do a mash up with Fishing in the Dark/Down in the Boondocks.
Thanks!.
YES, YES THE DIRT BAND❤❤❤ Jeff Hanna, from the dirt band, also did a single with Nicolette Larson, "Make a Little Magic" a really pretty song.
One of my favorite songs of theirs is Dance Little Jean. It is so sweet.
I remember this song it was played every day on the radio.
Darn good song.
