Ben Daglish (RIP), David Whittaker, Matt Gray, Thomas Detert (criminally underrated), The late Richard Joseph, Pretty much ANYONE that was associated with Maniacs of Noise, etc.
i go on a playlist, there is this guy saying "this guy and this guy are the gods of C64 music" and i open a new playlist with these artists, and there is another guy saying "this other guy is the god". where does it stop? also i notice that the two guys who come up in each comments are at least Rob Hubbard and Jereon Tel.
This shit is objectively amazing. It's got absolutely nothing to do with nostalgia or the novelty of the computer sounds - the music itself is incredible. Bands like Cut Copy would kill to write music like this.
i fancy the original too. nothing beats the original. although i'm talking against myself as i'm working on a remake now... but it's more about sound engineering, keeping the original sounds and vibe, as they are perfect as they are.
i can't be objective on this subject as i'm heavily biased since it's my favorite since decades... but good to hear a positive 'outside' perspective =)
C64 music is awesome. This crud is way before my time (I was born in '01) but the C64's music was incredible. Heck, it had some pretty solid ports as well, even if said ports lacked some of the content of the original.
@@trioritydev The released version wasn't a "cut version", but a version developed separately from the original port, which had hit development issues, mainly centering around the performance of the sprite multiplexer. The released version used a variant on the engine developed for Katakis, with new gameplay code and assets, all knocked together in a couple of months. It's an achievement that they got as close to complete in the time they had.
What you said is absolutely true, In most c64 games you had to choose between music and fx. In this one you could have both at the same time and all this with only three channels. Pretty amazing indeed.
What was truely amazing about the C64 port was that they pulled the music off using only two channels (except the for the title music) and the third channel was used for in-game sound FX. They had to speed up the tempo a bit to "fill" the music a bit, but I reckon Ramiro did a brilliant job and gave the C64's port a very unique feel to it, retaining the arcade feel and excitement.
Oh HOLY God! I used to play this game hours and hours back in my younger days ^^ I still LOVE this game and the Music is EPIC like nothing before :) This brings back so many great and loved memorys :)
nächte...sehr viele nächte, bis der letzte gegner hinüber war...ein geiles game...und die musik, da kann einer sagen was er will, ist von der c64er version immer noch die beste...
It was a very difficult game, I finished it only 3 or 4 times (starting again from the 1° level like most of the games at that time). I liked too very much the music.
c64 audio is mono by default and this is why I recorded these tunes in mono. The stereo option in Sidplay artificially separates channels in a sid track and assigns these to left and right audio channels (much like Amiga does naturally). This option is most useful if you wish to record samples from sid tracks for your own songs. I would imagine that one would require two separate sid chips to produce true stereo sounds on a c64.
Yeah, the only way you can technically have stereo sound on a C64, is if you have a second SID chip installed, but that's pretty much cheating, and most games don't usually use that anyway, most of the stuff you hear using dual sids is demoscene stuff.
Everyone my age knows that boss battle music. That fucking level 4 gave me nightmares. If you loose your power ups mid way through the rest of it becomes impossible.
The C64 had the best music of _all_ versions of R Type. Much improved compared to the arcade. Even compared to the later versions of the game for Playstation 1, 2, etc. The Amiga title screen was pretty sweet too (of course also C Huelsbeck).
The most noteworthy track from Amiga version is the intro which is propably what you have. Hülsbeck composed both c64 and Amiga intro tunes, both are different and neither one was used in the original Arcade game.
the alien looks kinda cute. It looks like it's trying to say hello.
Being Cute Is How They Lure You In Before They Eat You:)
Never noticed, but true. 😀
Or its grandchild made him an ashtray or something. It looks like "ooooh you shouldn't have done that! Look honey what little Jimmy made me?"
Chris Huelsbeck, Jereon Tel, Rob Hubbard, Edwin van Santen (RIP) - some of the most truly amazing C64 composers right there...
Frey Gray too.
Tim Follin
Also Ben Daglish (RIP).

You should hear the Instant Remedy remix. It's a cool take on the title theme.
They are indeed great, but only the title track is an original; the rest are covers (sounding actually better, IMO) of the arcade original's tunes.

I love this music too xD
and it's not for nostalgic things, just because I love it, like you said! ♡♥♡♥♡
Anyone else finds this music superior to the arcade version? Gameplay is still better on the arcade IMO.
yes, actually!
I do as well. This IMO is the best mix of R-Type's BGM, even over the Sega Master System FM or PC Engine versions.
Yes. The rawness serves it better and makes it more dramatic. I often play the whole thing on full volume at home
absolutely
Much better!! The Amiga version is also wonderful.
C64 music rules.
2:08 I love the stage 1 song. It just screams epicness all over the place.

R-Type was always my most favorite C64 shooter, and the music keeps me going every time, even today! Blast off and strike the evil Bydo empire!!
Best r type music
R.Vaca c64 renditions of R-type songs are the best.

Developer: "Here, make a theme song for this"
God: "Sure"
I think this is some of the most BOSS music I ever heard... deep, what a masterpiece!

Excellent 8bit zax, thx mr. C. Hülsbeck, respect
nächte...sehr viele nächte, bis der letzte gegner hinüber war...ein geiles game...und die musik, da kann einer sagen was er will, ist von der c64er version immer noch die beste...
Woah, Level 7 is... epic in this version O.o
It was a very difficult game, I finished it only 3 or 4 times (starting again from the 1° level like most of the games at that time). I liked too very much the music.
Great bass line!!! =)
This is like an 8bit space opera...
Better than the arcade music.
Great job, flatten the curve!
Keep everyone happy with SID zaks during Coronavirus year 2020.
¡Maravilla!
Masterpiece!
The alien: Hello ma friend :)
Amazing. Just amazing!

Thanks, only now I read your message. I'll check it out so I can find the song again. :)
Thanks for uploading. Brilliant stuff. :)
Better as the Amiga-Titlesong !!!
the boss theme is AWESOME
THis is just great!
These tunes sound even better played through Sidplay in high quality stereo sound.
A REAL SID panorama opens out then.
sweet!
Love it!
Still Epic today :)
NICE!
how good is Battle pressure? (green battleship level 4:28) friggin awesome
sort it out mate. i love it
I had a MOD file with that song, but with different samples. I'd love to find it again. :(
The Amiga version theme? amp.dascene.net/downmod.php?index=60937
4:29 to 6:50+, me likes. The first song is also amazing.
I didnt know that the commodore 64 has so good music chip, sounds like amiga...
no it doesn't
Though, the Amiga CAN sound a lot like a SID, if it chooses too. You just use simple waveforms instead of complex samples.
Rather awesome, specially considering its age and the limitations of the hardware employed.
jaj normal c64 song
The most noteworthy track from Amiga version is the intro which is propably what you have. Hülsbeck composed both c64 and Amiga intro tunes, both are different and neither one was used in the original Arcade game.
Yes, I recocnized the song as the same as I had in a MOD file (much better sample quality), but anyone knows WHAT R-type song it is?
@hyraxaus
i think there was an extra channel for white noise
Fucking amazing.
C64? Having good music? Waaaaat!?
normal c64 songs =)
I cant get to this level with 128 polyphonic haha
R-Type is a space shooter game
Uhm, the C64 version does not use any samples.
0:05 is not very headphone user-friendly.
treeghettox What's that supposed to mean?
treeghettox When you get the bonuses in level 1, it becomes very easy. If you die, then you're fucked.
+treeghettox Actually the difficulty doesn't start to kick in before Level 4. But from then on, it gets really hard.
sounds amazing to me.
"ELECTRIC DREAMS" "RAINBOW ARTS" Hmm...
I had an Amiga MOD file with this song, could anyone help me find it?
Sir, this is a Wendy's
Try Amiga Music Preservation (AMP)
