- I’m happy to get this song through! I love Billy Joel. Now I’ve played this song on gigs for years but never played it this way. But this is very close to the original. I put a little Earl in there with the drags, but the basic groove is copped from a Liberty DeVito drum clinic! This what he played. It’s very different, but very correct. The first time I tried it with a drum less track .. it was fun to play!

@@earldrum actually, my name is Joel. That moniker was a high school 'nickname'. I've been playing drums since 1965 and currently in a community band called Classic Rewind Live. We do 50's to 90's...rock, country, R&B, etc.

@@scottmitchell555 I saw Liberty DiVitto teach a class on playing this song at MD FESTIVAL back in the 90s. I put a little of me on it too! But it’s very close!
@@earldrum Very cool man. I would say your rendition is pretty damn close. I've always believed that Liberty DiVitto is one of the most underrated drummers out there. He has a very unique approach to his drum parts. No one else sounds like him.

Yes, Liberty played it with a brush and a stick. I played it for years more of a hi hat groove, but I saw him demonstrate it at a drum clinic where he said all drummers play this one wrong! Then he play it this way! Crazy! Thanks for watching

Patrio … yes! Liberty DeVitto, the original drummer, demonstrates it in a few videos on UA-cam.
Did you read circus magazine for the drum tabs?
No, I figure it out by ear and I saw Liberty DeVito play it at a drum clinic. I don’t use drum tabs, but I can read drum charts.
