    The in-head exhaust manifold exists in the Ford 2.7 /3.0 ecoboost and VW EA888 motor family and derivatives. Both of those engines are turbocharged, so the real advantage is keeping the turbos cooler, and quicker at building boost. It's a very German design choice, as both of those motors were designed there. Nissan has always been pretty good at making engines though. Edit: also found out the Jatco transmission is a licensed modified Mercedes transmission.

      If you’re going by what the fuel economy report display shows, it’s inaccurate as much as 2-3mpg. Fill up, zero your trip odometer, drive around several hundred miles normally, then refill and divide miles driven by how many gallons it takes to refill, and see if the actual mileage isn’t more like 17-19mpg. I have a 2023 Frontier SV 4x4 and this is what my results are consistently, tank after tank. Gauge shows 19-20mpg and I’m calculating 17 instead.

      @@duanebledsoe7566 I’ve got the same truck as you and I got 18.6 MPG, but I am babying it and still breaking it in, I only have 517 miles on it at the moment. Highway driving I drive it at about 65-70 mph, and the rpm I try to stay around 1500 but it get up to 2,000 sometimes 3000-3500 when merging. I still need to get a tonneau cover which will help get me an extra 1-2 maybe 3 mpg. I haven’t used cruise control yet, I’ll use it once I hit 1200-1500 miles on the truck when the engine is broken in.

    • @duanebledsoe7566
      @duanebledsoe7566 Рік тому +2

      @@thomasbegley630 cruise control will eat the fuel even more due to how it works. I can set it at any highway speed between 55 to 70 mph, and when I hit a hill and it slows down, then the transmission will downshift through three gears and the RPM’s hit 5000 just to try to make up the 3 mph it lost. I can drive the same stretch of road manually and keep the RPMs under 3000 with just my foot. It’s the same with the smart cruise control when following a vehicle. It might slow down to match the lead vehicle speed, but when I change lanes to go around, it downshifts through three gears again and aggressively charges forward way too fast. Nissan needs to issue an update for the software controlling this. It’s been an issue since the 2022 models came out, but as of yet there’s been no update.

    This was a really good interview with the Nissan Frontier Chief Engineer.
    I like how he went through all the changes and design around the new engine to get to the efficiencies and or feature comforts. There were a couple things that he did mention that I thought were important around towing. He is right on that people assume wrongly that new engine and new transmission should have larger towing capacity. The stated towing numbers are a the sweet spot of what this truck can tow. You wouldn't want to be towing a skid steer around with a small sized truck as though you may be able to get it up to speed you need the stop too and as he stated you are adding weight with bigger engine, tranny, supports, brakes, calipers, etc.
    The last item I found interesting is that he was the designer of the exhaust manifold on the 1st gen Frontier. Though there was a recall in the casting in the early years he was able to squeak out an extra 10 HP when it was redesigned. One final thought, is that I hope he was not the designer of the upper intake in the 1st gen Frontier because that was a design mess for those that know what I mean. :)
    Great job, great interview.

    My one question that I would love to have been touched upon is, with this new engine being direct injected, how do they plan on managing the carbon buildup that all DI engines suffer from?

    • @Fix_It_Again_Tony
      @Fix_It_Again_Tony 3 роки тому +3

      It's hard if not impossible to completely prevent carbon build up in the intake ports on DI engines. Like you said all DI engines suffer from it to some degree. The crankcase gases must be recirculated into the intake and only so much of the oil vapor can be removed. This engine will be a good candidate for a catch can and regular intake port cleaning using CRC Intake Valve and Turbo Cleaner or something similar.
      DI engines produce more power and fewer emissions than their port injection counterparts, so they are here to stay.

    • @kemer1977
      @kemer1977 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah, its an engineering problem for sure. Toyota did an ingenious thing with their 3.5 engine in the taco. They use a dual injection system. The DI is the primary, and the port injection is used primarily for the carbon build-up issue. Of course, having two fuel injection systems is adds a level of unnecessary complexity. But it should be effective in keeping carbon build-up in check.

    • @Fix_It_Again_Tony
      @Fix_It_Again_Tony 3 роки тому +1

      @@kemer1977 They do that with the BRS/GT86 as well I think.
      Using an oil with a low volatiliy (Noack) will help as well. I read that API is coming out with the SP passenger car oil standard soon. I looked but didnt see a requirement for reduxed volatiliy with the SN standard, but I'm not an expert. Hopefully the industry keeps working towards a solution instead of letting the ports clog up after warrenty.
      I have a car equipped with the BMW N54 engine and they sell a special vacuum attachement that fits into the intake ports and a wand that allows you to blast the valves with walnut shells. I've done it three times in 180,000 miles - great fun. I'll take the DI benifits any day though. Fill that car with e85 and it's like injecting meth right into the combustion chamber. The cooling effect is enormous. Cooler air has more oxygen and allows more ignition timing advance.

      @Ming Yang I've only owned Japanese cars. But remember when the Gen2 Frontiers came out the automatics had problems that weren't realized until years later. My old Camry also had an engine model that was subject to problems after so many miles.
      Engine and transmission problems are not limited to domestic brands. Additionally, the quality of Nissan has gone down in the last decade. Renault still owns them and a lot of their manufacturing is done in Mexico. The company is also nearly bankrupt so I expect some corners to be cut. As for the Frontier, the previous engine/model was so reliable because it was so old. The had years to work out all the kinks. It is a lot more difficult to do that today in the first couple years of a new gen and all the new technology they are using today.

    • @contactalias7500

      @Ming Yang That is interesting becuase I also owned a 2019 Corolla that had several recalls on old tech that should have been perfected by now - one of those being a fuel pump.
      I am not here to argue. Japanese car makers also suffer from issues with newer designs, maybe not as many as the Americans or Euros but they do. I would just advise people to wait two or three years before buying a new truck with a bunch of new tech on it. Unless they have the time to deal with recalls.

    These are the items David Vizard and Speed Of Air Engine Technologies would recommend for this engine and all direct injection engines: The speed-of-air pistons, polyquad valve modification, contour angle back cut of the valves, super porting of the ports and chambers and thermal coating the chamber and exhaust ports would help this engine improve performance, output, emissions and fuel economy. Plus the engine oil would stay cleaner longer because part of the piston ring package would be a gapless second ring from Total Seal which would keep fuel and combustion gases where they belong.

      Nissan has had a long relationship with Jatco since helping found the company. Their automatics are solid. The RE5R05A from the previous gen Frontier is a great transmission. It is also behind the 5.6L V8 in the Armada, Pathfinder and Titan. You also see it in the 350Z. It got a bad rap because Calsonic built a failure prone radiator for the Frontier and Xterra that allowed engine coolant to enter the transmission (SMOD). Not really Jatco's fault.
      I am aware of the issues people have with Jatco CVTs. I just helped my future borther-in-law service his because it was slipping. After changing the fluid it no longer slips. I think a lot of the issues with CVTs come down to not servicing them often enough, though there have been other problems with software and the Jatco CVT specifically is known for mechanical wear, though that might have something to do with the fluid as well.

    The Frontier takes a page from the sales-leading Tacoma and betters it with a more rugged FULLY-BOXED FRAME, rear DISC BRAKES, an ALL-STEEL BED and more HORSEPOWER/TORQUE -- instead of the Tacoma's FLEXY OPEN C-CHANNEL frame, rear DRUM BRAKES and cheaper, weaker and crack-prone PLASTIC/FIBERGLASS composite bed (the latter which requires replacement as a whole when damaged). Note: The pricier Tundra is equipped with all those aforementioned things the Frontier has, but the cost-cutting Tacoma doesn't.

    The tow ratings for half-tons (light duty) trucks are outrageous, well over 10,000 lbs with some models. But, do you really want to tow that much weight with a half ton?? Not really, in my opinion.

      Yeah I’m happy to be able to tow 3 tons fully loaded, anything more than that then I might as well get a full size pickup. I’m just an average person person doing household things, I don’t have any boats or toys to tow around so midsize truck is perfect for me. I like the Nissan and the Tacoma right now because they both offer a V6 natural aspirating engine, but I do like the power that that the Frontier is offering maybe more torque but for me right now it’s good for what I need it to do, home depot/Lowe’s trips, dump runs, and hauling pellets for the pellet stove. I drive 100 miles round trip to work each day and the Frontier rides so smooth I love it. I’ve got enough power to merge on the highway and if need be to pass others. Nissan did a great job, GM has set the bench mark at the moment but for me at this point in time Nissan with its natural aspirating engine with 310 HP and 280 lbft of torque smooth ride I’m happy. I’ve got the 2023 Nissan Frontier SV crew cab 4x4 with a 6ft bed. Now let’s see how the reliability will be on this truck years down the road, so far I’m happy with it thanks Nissan for a good decent truck that’s not too expensive for the average person. Price could come down a bit more and I think if they did that they might sell more Frontiers than other midsize probably close to how many tacomas are being sold, who knows 🤷‍♂️.

    I have the '21 SV with the 3.8L and 9 speed. With a tonneau cover on the back and keeping it at 55/60 mph I can squeeze 30.7 mpg out of it. Overall, I love the truck, but I do wish the tow rating was 7000# just because if you want to tow a cargo trailer or camper with tandem axles, they usually have two 3500# axles so the GVWR exceeds the tow rating of the truck. I don't actually need to tow 7000 lbs, but I would prefer to be able to tow a trailer with tandem axles instead of a single axle just because they tow nicer, and I'm finding it's really hard to find tandem axle trailers with a GVWR of 6000# or less. My only other complaints are that the transmission hesitates when you're taking off from a full stop. (Once you're rolling it's responsive, though.) The oil filter is a PITA to get to (even though there's an access panel) and it takes 5.25 quarts of oil. Why not 5 quarts or 6 quarts just to make it simple? LOL I've also noticed the AC refrigerant seems to be getting low already and the truck is only 2 years old. And I wish there was a dipstick for the transmission, just for the peace of mind of being able to check it.
    Thanks for doing this video. I learned some new things about the engine and transmission that I didn't know. BTW, I've been under there with a flashlight, searching and searching. Is there really NO grease zerks on the newer Frontiers? I sure haven't found any...yet. LOL

    A nice looking truck, but Nissan has missed the boat on a few things: 1) No "All-wheel-drive" option in the transfer case--Ford and Toyota lack that, too, in their mid-size trucks. Jeep has offered it as an option for how many decades now in most of their 4WDs? 2)The direct-injection thing--GDI is still not perfected to stop carbon buildup, no matter how much the manufacturers claim otherwise. 3)Did Nissan improve the ground clearance of the Pro-4X? That was the old Frontier Pro-4X's weak spot. They won't say, so that probably means that Nissan hasn't improved it.
