In this week’s video for Mother Jones, Kat Abughazaleh@katmabu breaks down the Democrats' latest attack line: calling out Republicans as "weird." The recent embrace of the word “weird” started with potential VP candidate Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, who used it on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to describe JD Vance, President Trump, and the out-of-touch policies of MAGA types: “These guys are just weird!"
It's getting under the skin of Trump and his allies. While they argue this insult is on par with Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables,” let’s be real: This isn’t about name-calling for its own sake. Who in their right mind wants to eliminate the Department of Education or inspect kids before they play sports? That's just weird. Defunding libraries and banning no-fault divorce? Also weird.
"Constantly talking about genitals, having an opinion about skull size, and burning books in the 21st century?" Kat says. "All of that is indisputably weird."
Ultimately, "weird" is about framing the debate in a way that cuts through the noise and speaks directly to what most people already feel: That Trump's agenda for the Republican party and the country is all a bit… weird.

As someone who was diagnosed late in life with Autism and who has worked with kids who have Autism, our rule for the kids is: "Be nice." This isn't nice. We model behavior for kids. This is teaching them that calling ppl names is acceptable behavior AND to do as we say, not as we do. If one has an issue with the behavior, call out the behavior. Labeling the PERSON is poor form and defending it as a "strategy" is gaslighting. If you wouldn't let your kids call someone "weird" in this pejorative context, why would we accept it from our leaders at their big age?

No, gaslighting is messing with a person with the purpose of causing them to question their reality and taking advantage of them. They didn’t do anywhere near the stuff they’re accused of, but they’re being framed for it anyway. It’s also called “gaming.”
This, on the other hand, is an observation. If something is weird, it can range anywhere from being harmless and uncommon, to strange, to toxic and even dangerous.
It works because of how much value conservatives give to being normal

And what about the millions who retired during Covid thinking they had enough money? What has the Democrat inflation done to them? We cant just keep spending, yet keep the border open so our tax dollars take care of every broke person in the world instead of just Americans. We dont have the resources.

@@raymondsmbb5794Raymond, the idea is that you get the credit, MONTHLY, IN ADVANCE, DIRECTLY INTO YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT. And it's NOT an offset. You don't have to work in order to take advantage of the credit. Canada has had a system in place that gives families a monthly $400 credit/payment per child, since 20 years ago, and it is very popular.

This kinda rhetoric about "Dems control the mainstream media" has always intrigued me, especially in the context of the history of biased media reporting. Like, there used to be laws preventing the kind of huge swings in bias we see between different news outlets that plagues America (and a lot of the Western world now), but many of them were repealed under the George W. Bush administration by Dick Cheney. This led pretty directly to the creation of media outlets like Fox News, which were basically straight propaganda outlets at the time for the Republican Party (kind of still are).
So when I see topics like this, it does feel a bit like "even if mainstream media is being coordinately controlled by the Democratic Party (which I don't believe, especially with folks like Rupert Murdoch, staunch conservative, still being massive powerhouses in the media industry), are we gonna be critical of them taking advantage of systems put in place by their political opposition?".

Yeah. Telling people that they should be in charge of their own lives, work to build themselves up and form stable relationships is very scary. Lower taxes, less wars, a safe and closed border? Literally shaking with fear. "Weird" is also effective because it's completely subjective. You can't shield yourself from being called weird, because that entirely depends on what a person or society views as weird. Your only defense against that is to either say, "I'm not" or "Yeah, I am, so what?", and they have used both of these already to no success. Being called weird goes against their perceived position of normalcy, which is what conservatives base their entire political agenda upon. They've been telling us for years that they're the normal ones, and that anyone who differs from their standard shouldn't have the same rights as them, so when you turn that around and say that they're the ones outside of the standard, they flip.

My theory for why it works is that conservatives love to see themselves as the "normal" ones in society. They typically like to paint groups of people that they regularly ostracize like gay or trans people as strange and abnormal, and often promote views that are traditional and old fashioned. They like to feel like the ones keeping society in line and preserving these so called good old values. But from an outside view they often look insane, irrational, creepy, and yeah, weird.
Calling them weird is a direct attack on the central way in which many of them see themselves.
To add to that, I think they like to imagine that they're part of a majority in their opinion. That most people think like they do but just don't want to speak out. Now if this imagined silent majority starts agreeing that they're weird, what does that mean about their place in the world?

Psychologically speaking, yes. This is an important part of their self image; they must see themselves as part of the greater society. (Most people do to some extent but it's a much more important thing for conservatives, and very much so for authoritarian followers.) While many people assemble a model of values and ethics from whatever core principles they hold, it's even easier to identify one's self with the majority group and repeat back whatever beliefs everyone else says they hold.
