Written by Bob Heatlie and produced by Neil Ross, the song was recorded by Scottish folk singer Mary Sandeman. Realising that the name didn't fit the song, they decided to come up with a name to put to the single. Leafing through the telephone directory, they came upon the name of Aneka.[2] This was then released as a single and Sandeman came up with a Japanese image under which to perform the song. To their surprise, the song became a major hit when it eventually reached No. 1 in August 1981.[3] The song went on to become a hit all over Europe and beyond, although according to Sandeman, it failed to chart in Japan itself because "The melody was Chinese. - sources
In fact, the song was released as a cover in Japan by Yukano Yamaguchi as “Chinese Boy” in 1983, two years after the release of Aneka’s original version.
i think Japan has a much greater influence culturally in the uk, and maybe thats the reason it was named as such. Around this time the Nippon TV made programme Monkey (西遊記) was a big hit in the uk as well as other Japan related programs and as others have said songs that reference Japan in their lyrics/titles were also very popular. i do agree that the main musical riff used in this song is more Chinese than Japanese though. Although the programme is German, Aneka is Scottish i believe. What a lovely song. ロンドンからこんにちは。

I’m a westerner, I speak several languages. But I can tell you that if I had to see this as a kid and my parent ask me what culture is this ? I would say, despite the song name being Japanese boy it’s very Chinese. In fact I think they would be offended.
I loved hearing this when it originally came out in 1981. I was approximately 5 years old and as I never saw this performed on TV, I thought the singer WAS Japanese! (No idea that she was actually Scottish!). I thought that was cool - a disco song sung by a Japanese girl! I had a Japanese girlfriend at School at the time, so it seemed highly appropriate. It still sounds great all of these years later and I'd sing it, regardless of the gender. It's just a classic - thanks Aneka!
Oh god, when those Japanese people turned up and she asked them! 🤣 I love the response of the second lad. He's like "I dunno!". The concept of asking a Japanese person if they've seen a non-descript Japanese boy is outstanding. Doesn't narrow it down much.
Heh, i was born in 1991, but i have studied a fair deal on 80's culture. Everything Japanese was HUGE back then. With Nintendo paving the way, Japanese culture quickly crossed the ocean and hit America's shores with a massive impact. Some anime and manga, plus a litany of seemingly low budget monster movies (most notably the Godzilla films) also helped pave the way for the phenomenon of Japanese culture hitting the U.S.
