This made me interested in frazil ice so much that I'm planning to write my Bachelor thesis on it. And also, expect me to apply for a job at this very park
That is so beautiful. The shot at 0:06 with the huge tree trunks also took me by surprise. This video alone made Yosemite one of my highest items on places to visit. I would just giggle and be in tears the whole time. Even though I'm from Norway and we have some of (IMO) the prettiest landscapes in the world, it's just not like this. I have to experience it for myself in it's true nature sometime.
ua-cam.com/video/tAVqKPL-kjw/v-deo.html It truly is a magical place. I hope you get to visit someday. (There's another redwood grove near San Francisco called Muir Woods that is also fabulous).
Those trees are the same type of tree as the largest tree in the world. They are Sequoias and are ridiculously massive, but while tall, they are shorter than their cousins, the Coastal Redwoods. Also, less than 100 miles in a straight line from Yosemite Valley, is the world's oldest tree.
Yosemite is so beautiful all around the year. Everytime of the year it carries an unique beauty that you can't see another time of the year. I think I have been to Yosemite during almost every season, though I have missed the Frazil Ice.
This is absolutely amazing.......I used to go to Yosemite every summer as a kid and never heard of this. Had I known of this as an adult I would have loved to see this up close and personal. Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing.
I am so Amazed at this Cold Experience. I never knew Frazil Ice existed. I am so ' Learning ' right now, and to think this happens in the late of Winter. It's funny, because the Lady Ranger said that it was not Snow or Ice, it's something in between;.... it's a Slurrpy. Let's call it; " Yosemite Slurrpy ". Just think how much money we could make on the side, when we are visiting Yosemite on vacation. Incredible to see that all of this ' Slurrpy ' stuff only takes place in a flowing Creek pathway. Also, the other Ranger called this, White Stuff, small " Frozen Crystal Mist ". The sad part about this incredible and amazing Yosemite feature is that once Summer arrives;..... the Slurrpy Fun is done with and over. So, one thing for sure about this surprising Icee Thing, is that, is that during the Summer months, you can go to Seven Eleven ( 7 / 11 ) and buy yourself a " Frozen Crystal Mist ' with several Fruit colors, because Yosemite only have ' White '. Well, Thank Heaven for 7 /11, they can make it possible when Yosemite can't make it Possible. And as You know, ... With God, All Things Are Possible ! p.s. Yosemite doesn't charge for their Slurrpy, only 7 / 11 .... Matthew 19:26
Thank you! This helps explain an early childhood memory. Visiting Yosemite, standing on snowpack near the base of a cliff a stream of slush a few feet wide flowed rapidly towards me. The only thing not explained in this video is I recall the frazil had an icy blue glow.
lovely video - thanks for creating this - i enjoy listening to people who obviously know and love the world they work in. one day i will go to Yosemite, get me some frazil :p
I loved this video. Thanks for posting it. I've been there during the summer...never even close during the winter though. My brother and his wife went there last August and took Voo-Coo's of pictures and videos. Great place to visit anytime.
Agreed. Summer is not my chosen time - families can take an exception for this one. Yosemite is an education not to be missed. Yosemite during Sept. -- the AM mornings show Yosemite Falls make the "Christmas Tree". The trails are open, snow fall is light and absolutely gorgeous foliage. It can be warm too, but there is MORE to SEE as they mention. I'd love to see this event. Bundle up and go on a clear night for Star Walks. No cars, virtually no light...outstanding!!
Great video Steve! I remember the first time I read John Muir's description of the ice cone, I was amazed by it. To see it through your eyes is pretty cool. Love the time lapse of the creek too.
Although I can see the potential hazards, the frazil ice on the Yosemite Stream and the "snow cone" under Yosemite Falls are a source of beauty and wonder; it makes me want to visit the park in March. I have fallen through ice up to my hip while photographing along the Great Salt Lake in winter. You have to be extremely careful around frozen waterways.
also, this ice blocking the flow, causing it to back up, then breaking the ice dam....it reminds me of how the ice age Missoula Floods are described as happening...
It looks beautiful in Yosemite, but not as a surprise Arctic weather front in the middle of Spring April surprise. Yes, I know EXACTLY what that slush, is, looks like up close and feels like when rain quickly finds itself in a late April rapid temp drop and one finds themselves driving in a huge7-Eleven slurpee machine of rain turned snowy day. April 14, 2019 Upper Middle U.S. was hit hard with the slush. When it hits your face it stings. Try shoveling it and the water makes it heavier than snow. I love nature.🤗
wow, that is a great observation! It is pretty much lava, really....I mean, think of it like this: lava is molten (liquified by heat) rock. This is a molten ice flow, really. Never thought of it like that but that is a brilliantly great way of illustrating this effect!
I think as climate change causes the weather to become more erratic and unpredictable these heavy rain/snow events increase in their severity we will be seeing a lot more of these kinds of events taking place.
Any recommendations and advice on visiting Yosemite at the end of March this year. I want to plan a trip but the snow and weather is scaring some of my friends away from wanting to visit at Thai time of year.
Snowshoeing in Yosemite in winter is a wonderful activity. Snowshoeing is easy to do, and you can get to some awesome areas if you're in good shape. There's also usually an ice rink set up at Curry Village, where you can rent skates, and ice skate with a view of Half Dome. The park is less crowded and just beautiful during the winter. Go for it!
I worked up there. It’s quite beautiful and tame. Fires cannot be predicted. If one starts it will ruin your trip. Make sure you go to Sugar Pine Railroad and ride the logger. Fishing is great throughout the park. A park ranger once told me that the average visitor is tracked by a wild animal within 15 minutes of walking away from their car. Stay on the trails, never hike alone. Don’t feed the wildlife and make lots of noise if you go hiking (bear). If you want to scare yourself from going there, read or watch MISSING 411. Yosemite is the number one national park for missing persons.
This made me interested in frazil ice so much that I'm planning to write my Bachelor thesis on it. And also, expect me to apply for a job at this very park
Good Luck on your thesis
How'd the thesis go?
yes we need an update@ Did you find anything?
Update sir
Thank you Daily Dose of Internet for yet another interesting thing about this world I never knew
This video made me want to be a park ranger. Just imagine knowing a park like this like the back of your hand.
it’s a hard job and doesn’t pay well, but it has to be personally rewarding though
My cousin is a park ranger in Colorado.
Plus you gotta deal with lost or possibly dead tourists
awww I tried to go there in spring when I visited from Australia but the weather was so bad we were told it was closed - this was worth waiting for!

Me, who lives in a hot country and never seen ice with my own eyes thinking of bringing a strawberry flavour syrup and eating all that ice slush.

Wow, incredible video of the beauty of nature. An incredibly beautiful job you have!
This is absolutely amazing.......I used to go to Yosemite every summer as a kid and never heard of this. Had I known of this as an adult I would have loved to see this up close and personal. Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing.
First time in my life I saw this. Thank you

How beautiful!! Mother nature...!!!
You learn something new every day... would love to see this.
With the amount of bs information it just clogs our brains from the usefull information
Absolutely amazing. I must come and see this for myself!
Every season brings awesomeness in the park.
Wow. Stunning work, Steve! Especially liked the time lapse of the ice collecting and blocking Yosemite creek.
Hey how you doing after 11 years?

Gotta check out Yosemite in all four seasons...Dazzling every time!
Thank you so much for sharing such incredible and amazing natural event. It is so interesting and breathtaking. Thanks.

Now that is very cool! We need to get there during that time so we can see it!
lovely video - thanks for creating this - i enjoy listening to people who obviously know and love the world they work in. one day i will go to Yosemite, get me some frazil :p
Really well done video. Nice explanation of the dynamics. Nice camerawork... I especially liked the time lapse at 6:17.
Amazing, so beautifull. Nice to see all that snow ans water.
I loved this video. Thanks for posting it. I've been there during the summer...never even close during the winter though. My brother and his wife went there last August and took Voo-Coo's of pictures and videos. Great place to visit anytime.
How incredibly unique and beautiful.
Looks absolutely DEADLY
Amazing!! Coming from Northern Canada, I have seen Wintery things that are astounding, some Frazil ice events included, but not this profound.

This is the beautiful side of nature.
Fabulous Yosemite!! I once worked there, have hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls, though it was summer.
My favorite place of all time
Wow!!! I have never heard of this before!
“It’s not snow, it’s not ice, it’s... something in between” yes. It is slush.
Beautiful!!! I love this park and have never seen this.

Thanks for the good video . I want to go back.
That job is the most satisfying I would love to work there I have a lake house but it's nothing compared to this just wow
This frazzles my mind.
also, this ice blocking the flow, causing it to back up, then breaking the ice dam....it reminds me of how the ice age Missoula Floods are described as happening...

I so wish I could have seen this park before I got too old.

I'm so thirsty now! It's 105 here, I want to go to Yosemite and jump in.
@cgrantski That is because it extremely rarely snows here. It only snows in the mountains here.
BEAUTIFUL!
Really Neat! Great Video. Thank you!
I think as climate change causes the weather to become more erratic and unpredictable these heavy rain/snow events increase in their severity we will be seeing a lot more of these kinds of events taking place.
