46:10 I’d consider the mind control chip to be more like the impact an abusive and controlling relationship can have on the brain. Ramona literally says Gideon ignored her and made her miserable in the relationship until she tried to leave - then he focused on forming a group to torture and control her every move
This whole movie is an allegory of relationships as a whole. Any time we start a new relationship, we have to deal with all of that person's evil ex's, not in a physical way, but as the scars they left on the partner. It's why the fights get more difficult as the movie goes on; the more recent the ex, the more raw the lingering psychological effects of that relationship. I wouldn't say this movie is necessarily a brain off movie. There are plenty of themes and ideas in this movie that it wants you to think about. I think what you're trying to say is you have to suspend your disbelief and accept the cartoon logic of the movie to really enjoy it to the fullest.
One of the major points of the movie is Scott’s progression into being an OK guy - at the beginning, he dates a high schooler when he’s in his 20s, cheats on Knives with Ramona, and continues to lead Knives on.
Edgar Wright is such a great director, so many details in every film and such a fun way of editing. I recommend the cornetto trilogy if you enjoyed the directing style, especially Hot Fuzz. Fun fact, the actress playing the evil ex girlfriend voices Katara in Avatar the Last Airbender

The graphic novel gets very dark when you learn of Ramona's obsession and confidence issues. Scott's violence is also addressed in that he is a bully but doesn't see himself as one. I understand why they didn't touch on these themes in the movie, but it really takes the story of the comic to the next level.

This is without a doubt one of the best made films out there, the details are exquisite. Edgar Wright is a filmmaking genius. You can just tell they all had a blast making this movie.
I remember being 15 and my dad taking me to the cinema to see this and not telling what i was seeing all he would say was this movie was made for me and is right up my street and he wasn’t wrong one of my absolute faves ❤
So to add to the “superhero lineup” Ex number 4, Roxy, is the voice of Katara from Avatar The Last Airbender. Scott not only had to fight both Marvel and DC, but a Waterbender as well
This has to be my favorite movie of all time. I've watched 8 hundreds of times along with the commentaries and it still gets me tearing up and laughing while watching it. There's just something about it
Got to see an early preview of this movie in theaters about two weeks before it released to the public and I still have the small poster they gave to us of the movie. Despite not knowing the original source material I loved it.
Think of the film as a video game. The dream sequences are like secret levels and tunnels into Scott's mind. Each ex is a boss fight. There's a ridiculous amount of subtext and Easter eggs for gamers, film geeks, and comic fans. Also, the original creator of the graphic novel was hugely inspired by video games. Toronto's a cold place in the winter and I'm guessing he spent his formative youth playing games like most kids back then.
The movie's a coming-of-age story of a lazy, self-centered, immature, freeloader who has to learn to grow up, become responsible, learn accountability and self-respect after he meets the girl of his dreams. It's told in a very stylized way and uses video games as a metaphor for Scott fighting his battles/demons/growing up.
The director, Edgar Wright, also directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, World's End... what an amazing visionary! You can see his jump cut style a bit here. Love him!
I'm really not a Michael Cera fan, don't care for Super Bad, but I LOVE this movie. The editing, the diologue, the music, so good. The cast is stacked. I love how the fights surprise everyone, but after they go right back to normal.
That IS Brie Larson singing. Brie was a popstar before she was an actress. There's a full version of her The Clash At Demonhead version of 'Black Sheep' that she sings in the movie. It's a cover of Metric's 'Black Sheep'. Both versions of the song are equally great.
This movie is chock full of editing genius. Every time Scott says, "There's girls watching" and Chris Evans looks up and down to the beat of a faint THUMP THUMP, I lose it.
If you liked this you guys should definitely try the cornetto trilogy (shaun of the dead, hot fuzz, and the worlds end) all very good movies, by the same guy who made this movie (edgar wright)
Guys, I don't know why you're so confused. I'm Canadian. This movie was filmed in and takes place in Canada. This is totally how we exist up here, word bubbles and all. Didn't'cha know?
Saw this in theaters when it came out. Couldn't understand how it flew under the radar for so many people. Soon as I left the theater I got online and ordered the comics.
This one slowly became my "feel good" movie without me noticing. No matter where in the runtime it is I can sit and just 'joy' for the remainder of the film.
That IS Brie Larson singing. It's a cover of the song Black Sheep by Metro Station. Brie actually had a short lived singing career when she was younger
So yeah this is basically Surrealism, reality with a touch of fantasy or scifi fantasy mixed in. Your not supposed to take it seriously as your just supposed to have fun with it and be nostalgic for video games and anime tropes. While not the best written stories Scott Pilgrim is a fun time with interesting characters and a good lesson with the idea of letting the past go, accepting it and moving on with your life.
I watched this so many times. I even took my friends steelbook and said Im accepting this as my birthday present. He was like, fine. XD I watched every commentary on the steelbook one after the other. Top 10 favourite movies.
One of my favorite movies of all time, i saw it my senior year in theaters and went and immediately bought the soundtrack on CD right after. Thanks for reaction to it!!!
I don't know why no one else has commented this, it's not a dream, the entire movie is a video game which is based on a comic. So basically it's a movie about a video game about a comic book.
My wife and I just enjoyed going to the theater back then and we saw this on a whim and our jaws were on the floor! What a movie! Still one of the most fun and wild rides you can go on.
Great reaction guys, so many moments I'm glad made the edit. Can't really remember when I first saw this film, but I was probably as confused as you were. Like most of Edgar Wright's films they get even better on a rewatch as you start to spot all the details and Easter eggs. I'm sure someone in the comments has already mentioned that Michael Cera throwing the Amazon package in the bin was done practically and took quite a lot of takes to get right.
Interesting reflection by Oak about the end with his "evil self" there. A less philosophical take on it is that Nega Scott is his opposite. So when they walk out and he says "He's just a nice guy", it's because he is... Scott is a jerk the entire movie, and his opposite is a nice guy. About easter eggs: there are too many to list, but here's a few. The first ex having 1 stripe on his shoulders, 2nd ex (Lucas Lee, LL) pointing with two fingers, there were 2 X:es on the signs. When the Roxy briefly harrassed him there were 4 X signs hinting that she'd be number 4. Todd has 3 stripes on his shirt (and the number 3). Oh, and he throws him through the walls 3 times (and the last time it is 3 walls), and the 3 strikes for the vegan police. After the 4th fight, after Scott and Ramona argued, his shirt says 4½. The twins, 5 and 6, when they turn up the volume, they turn it to 11 (5+6, as well as spinal tap reference probably). When they are going to the party where he first talks to Ramona, the store sign in the background has a broken letter. FLIGHT CENTRE says F IGHT CENTRE. That was a few from the top of my head :D
Based on comic book where this stuff is possible by many differnet people, its just how this comic's version of the world is. Ramona can literally travel through peoples dreams to traverse the world if she wants. Scott is an a**hole, but not as much as all the other people with powers(for the most part lol).
This movie certainly feels dreamy and surreal. A lot of dialog that seems outlandish actually happened in the comics like the moon getting punched or Scott fighting a giant. Also, Ramona briefly mentions how she travels/teleports by going through Subspace, which Scott occasionally picks up in dreams. Also, I've always really liked the NegaScott gag at the end.
Fun facts about the music in the movie: Beck wrote 20+ original songs for this movie, most if not all of the songs from Scott's band plus more. Also in the bass battle, Scott was playing a riff from a Final Fantasy game. I forget which one, there are a lot of video game references in this movie. They even got permission to use music from the Zelda series
here’s some fun pilgrim facts Many of the characters were boxed off of people Bryan knows irl. Wallace is based off his former roommate, Stacey is based off his sister Stacey, and the name Scott pilgrim came from a song by the band plumtree called Scott pilgrim. speaking of plumtree, scott wears a plumtree shirt during the fight with matthew, allot of lucas’s movies are named after plumtree songs, and some of plumtree s music appears in the movie !! (scott pilgrim and go! for example) In the film, Stacey worked at the same place irl Stacey worked. So when your watching the movie, Stacey’s name tag is actually the name tag the actual Stacey used !! X’s are place subtly in the movie. If you watch the background, you’ll see how much x’s are scattered around each ex is associated with theres corresponding number, and is placed subltly throughout the fights. while scott is associated with the number zero Bill hader is actually in the movie, he plays the narrator !! (doesn’t show up on screen) In the movie, the twins don't speak due to the casting office forgetting to write "identical mid-twenties attractive English-speaking Japanese twins" into the casting call so they accidentally hired 2 guys who dosnt know any English in one draft of the script, the film ended with Scott being a serial killer who imagined all of it and killed Ramonas exes in cold blood Bryan Lee O’Malley got the idea for the comics after finding out wife had 3 exes all named Matthew every actor had to actually learn to play their intrument from scratch except for michael cera who was told to play worse so that he wouldnt outdo the rest of the band rival bands are named after video games canonically stephen stills is gay, just closeted and heavily internalized there’s a scott pilgrim game !! in the end credits, the sprites from the game were used !! (+ the extra life) edgar wright told the actors to not blink during the movie to give it more of a comic book vibe. the actors only blink a few times. bryan’s brother designed the 8-bit universal logo at the beginning of the film !! anyways i definitely reccomend checking out the comics lol.
The lead stunt double that chris evans hands his skateboard, the one that first punches scott, is actually a pretty prolific stunt actor, coordinator, and director as well as voice actor. Hes the voice and stunt actor of Dante from Devil may cry, voice of ken masters from street fighter. He performed the stunts for the live action references for resident evil games as chris redfield. He also did the some of the stunt work in this movie included some scenes where he filled in for micheal cera as scott himself.
Loved watching you guys question if you should be tripping out 😂. One of the few movie adaptations from a comic done well. A lot of the stylisation pays homage to games and culture or the late 90s so it's no wonder there are a bunch of game references in the movie even with the way the story is panned out. Absolutely loved this. Appreciate coming into this with an open mind. Hoping for more!
If you noticed every ex does something that coincides with their number, like Patel covers 1 eye cuz he is ex number 1, Scott wore a shirt with Zero to symbolize he isn’t an evil ex, and the fantastic four 1/2 shirt Scott wore was after Roxy (ex number 4) cuz Ramona said that he was an evil ex waiting to happen so he was going to the dark side a little bit.
It's kind of surprising y'all saw Scott as a shy, nice guy. Scott is .. hardly the nice guy. He's an incredibly huge scummy asshole. He was written to be as scummy as possible. He uses Knives to get over Envy, treats her badly, cheats on her, cheats on Ramona, was called out as ending his relationship with Kim badly, and was called out as being a "jerky jerk" who is a known womanizer. And through it all he refuses to accept responsibility for any of his actions until the final five minutes.
The movie is based on a manga-styled graphic novel that relates the emotional drama of life and relationships of people in their 20's, but seen through the prism of the hyper-stylized tropes of manga, anime, and video games. So it's not all a dream, it's just all the drama of being that age cranked up - as it often feels in your 20's - to the point where emotional struggles are being played out in physical video game battles against cartoonishly evil boss characters. It's very much a love letter to gamer culture, where the kids who grew up playing Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy are now adults who apply the lessons and knowledge from the video games they've played to the lives they're trying to create for themselves. After all, everyone's just trying to level up in the game of life, right? The movie spawned a fun video game in the vein of classic 16-bit side-scrolling beat 'em ups. There's even a Scott Pilgrim animated series currently in the works, and nearly the entire cast from the movie is returning to voice their respective characters.
It’s not all one big dream. It’s just weird, and you supposed to just accept that. It’s fairly faithful to the comics. Definitely worth a read.

This is without a doubt one of the best made films out there, the details are exquisite. Edgar Wright is a filmmaking genius. You can just tell they all had a blast making this movie.
Yeah it is Brie Larson who sings in the scene and this was btw. the movie that introduced me to her and I haven't stopped loving her since then ❤🔥
Have you seen the United States of Tara? Great show with Toni Collette - Brie plays her daughter
Insanely underrated movie, stunning visuals, amazing music, absolutely crazy plot lol!
SCOTT PILGRIM!!!! it's been a while since i last watch it!! I'll take a trip down memory lane with you guys
I remember being 15 and my dad taking me to the cinema to see this and not telling what i was seeing all he would say was this movie was made for me and is right up my street and he wasn’t wrong one of my absolute faves ❤
So to add to the “superhero lineup”
Ex number 4, Roxy, is the voice of Katara from Avatar The Last Airbender. Scott not only had to fight both Marvel and DC, but a Waterbender as well
This has to be my favorite movie of all time. I've watched 8 hundreds of times along with the commentaries and it still gets me tearing up and laughing while watching it. There's just something about it
Btw the girl from number 4 is the voice actress for Katara! Mae Whitman :D
Got to see an early preview of this movie in theaters about two weeks before it released to the public and I still have the small poster they gave to us of the movie.
Despite not knowing the original source material I loved it.
Not a dream, just a comic book universe.
I've seen this about 15 times and it gets better every single time.
You don’t have to be on drugs, the movie does it for you. lol
Ayeee didn't expect this!! One of my all time favorite movies!!
Love your energy in this video! Your laughs are radiant!
Thanks for watching with us!
The fact nega Scott is actually a really nice guy since Scott is kinda a asshole was my favorite through line
If you liked this you guys should definitely try the cornetto trilogy (shaun of the dead, hot fuzz, and the worlds end) all very good movies, by the same guy who made this movie (edgar wright)
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE LETS GOOO!! great reaction guys, this is one of my favorite movies
The girl ex with the black lines under her eyes is the voice actress for katara from avatar btw
I love how this is the rare romantic comedy where the "other woman" (Knives) has a real character arc and gets the good ending.
She wasn't the other woman, Ramona was. Knives was the jilted ex.
This one slowly became my "feel good" movie without me noticing. No matter where in the runtime it is I can sit and just 'joy' for the remainder of the film.
Scott being starstruck that Ramona dated a famous guy always cracks me up. Did he forget his famous ex? 😅
6:11 god this movie is so good, and the delivery at this part gets me every time.
This movie is an audio/visual masterpiece.
My favorite movie of all time. So many little easter eggs and references. Amazing work by Edgar Wright
The universal laws in the world of Scott Pilgrim are akin to that of a retro video game, if not mistaken
"are we supposed to be on drugs right now?"
can confirm, i have watched this movie high and it did absolutely enhance the experience
😂🤘
My wife and I just enjoyed going to the theater back then and we saw this on a whim and our jaws were on the floor! What a movie! Still one of the most fun and wild rides you can go on.
The “ha that’s actually hilarious “ so many quatable lines
"Are we supposed to be on drugs right now?" - The movie IS the drugs!
The movie is based on a comic book series that’s set in a video game world.
Ramona’s recollections are straight from the comic
"Drip drip drip..." i see what you did there lol 😂😂😂😂
This movie is just great. One of my favorite adaptions of an existent IP, just love it!
I’ve watched this film 15 times & I catch something new on each viewing. I’m a huge fan of generous storytelling.
Based on comic book where this stuff is possible by many differnet people, its just how this comic's version of the world is. Ramona can literally travel through peoples dreams to traverse the world if she wants. Scott is an a**hole, but not as much as all the other people with powers(for the most part lol).
Scott Pilgrim was a comic started back in 2004 by Bryan Lee O’Malley(?). The art in the show is based on the comic book pages.
12:13 Oak chuckling at Wallace eyeing Jimmy just sends me 😂
YES! One of my favorite movies (and book series!), I'm so excited you are reacting to this!
This is one of my favorite movies, particularly because of the visual style. Speed Racer is another favorite due to the visual eye-candy.
Never clicked a video faster. My FAVORITE non LOTR movie
This movie is THE prime example of perfectly meeting expectations. I knew what I was getting and it just nails every. Single. Aspect.
We were 100% blind on this one. Didn't know anything until the end during our review.
Oaks refusal to accept the heightened reality throughout is hilarious. I'm loving it.
Sending them into this movie of all movies cold is crazy lol this needed someone who's seen it before
Fun facts about the music in the movie: Beck wrote 20+ original songs for this movie, most if not all of the songs from Scott's band plus more. Also in the bass battle, Scott was playing a riff from a Final Fantasy game. I forget which one, there are a lot of video game references in this movie. They even got permission to use music from the Zelda series
You guys can’t pump these reactions out fast enough! Lol loving them all 😂. Keep it up!
here’s some fun pilgrim facts
Many of the characters were boxed off of people Bryan knows irl.
(scott pilgrim and go! for example)
In the film, Stacey worked at the same place irl Stacey worked. So when your watching the movie, Stacey’s name tag is actually the name tag the actual Stacey used !!
X’s are place subtly in the movie. If you watch the background, you’ll see how much x’s are scattered around
each ex is associated with theres corresponding number, and is placed subltly throughout the fights. while scott is associated with the number zero
Bill hader is actually in the movie, he plays the narrator !! (doesn’t show up on screen)
In the movie, the twins don't speak due to the casting office forgetting to write "identical mid-twenties attractive English-speaking Japanese twins" into the casting call so they accidentally hired 2 guys who dosnt know any English
in one draft of the script, the film ended with Scott being a serial killer who imagined all of it and killed Ramonas exes in cold blood
Bryan Lee O’Malley got the idea for the comics after finding out wife had 3 exes all named Matthew
every actor had to actually learn to play their intrument from scratch except for michael cera who was told to play worse so that he wouldnt outdo the rest of the band
rival bands are named after video games
canonically stephen stills is gay, just closeted and heavily internalized
there’s a scott pilgrim game !! in the end credits, the sprites from the game were used !! (+ the extra life)
edgar wright told the actors to not blink during the movie to give it more of a comic book vibe. the actors only blink a few times.
bryan’s brother designed the 8-bit universal logo at the beginning of the film !!
anyways i definitely reccomend checking out the comics lol.
Omg what a throwback this is! I remember watching this in the theaters as a teenager haha it was so good!
Can't wait for the animated series they are making with the same cast and original comic the creator for Netflix!
Looking forward to that now! 🤜🤛
10:58 14:34 Oak and Dave with their “it’s all a dream” theories- again, what modern film has “it all been a dream” in? Lmfao
This is how Edgar Wright does his movies
It's kind of surprising y'all saw Scott as a shy, nice guy. Scott is .. hardly the nice guy. He's an incredibly huge scummy asshole. He was written to be as scummy as possible.
He uses Knives to get over Envy, treats her badly, cheats on her, cheats on Ramona, was called out as ending his relationship with Kim badly, and was called out as being a "jerky jerk" who is a known womanizer. And through it all he refuses to accept responsibility for any of his actions until the final five minutes.
seeing anna kendrick here just reminded me of how much i want these guys to watch pitch perfect
Cinematographer Bill Pope reaches GOAT status with this movie. He also shot “Baby Driver” & The Cornetto Trilogy for director Edgar Wright.
It’s super interesting to me that you all describe Scott as ‘a nice guy’ in your final comments.
I've always considered this movie the perfect farewell love letter to the 00's lol
From personal experience, I can verify that this movie hits different when you watch it high.
