The main reason why this movie flopped is that it came out at the same time as the first Despicable Me movie, I think kids were more drawn to that movie over this one cause this one is more complex and adults didn't really want to give an animated movie that much attention. It's unfortunate that Megmind falls into that area of being too mature for kids and being judge by adults just for being an animated movie, it's still a stigma that hurts lots of great animated movies and shows.

Oak is such a good dude (genuinely). He went straight into one of the main points of this film. "The Good Guy" and "The Bad Guy" tropes. This movie examines this with two major plots: The Clark Kent of it all and the "Best Friend Good Guy". Is a super hero inherently good or were there factors (like being praised all their life and having it insanely easy). Is the villain inherently bad (or maybe they were seen as the problem from the jump by society so they had no other options but to be the other side of the coin). And is the "best friend" who always puppy dog follows the woman who is obsessed and devoted to her actually a real friend (or does he expect more).
Obviously not all men, super heroes, villains fit this but it's worth investigating and questioning. For Mega Mind he represents the kids who maybe grew up in poor neighborhoods who are seen by society and the justice system as the problem (they feel like they can never win or be the good guy). Brad Pitts character represents people who grew up in privilege who got everything (without maybe really earning/deserving it and sometimes even really wanting it). There is extreme pressure in having to be the good guy the successful one. No room for failure.
Jonah Hill's character (ironically) represents the guys who think they're the solution to the problem ("the nice guys") but are actually toxic. Because they believe being "nice" means they deserve things. That's not real friendship or real generosity. You are kind to be kind not to get things in return. These types of men can and do lash out at women when they don't get what they want from them. It can be and is very dangerous.
It's encouraging to see men acknowledge this and be able to spot and highlight this. There are some really good humans out here raising their kids to be good humans. It's important for young people to see that some behaviors are toxic (even dangerous) but that there is good in the world and that there are people really working hard to change things in the right direction (like men who are examples of positive masculinity: Badd Medicine host).

This movie was clearly very well thought out and if you just make another one because the first one was great, it's rarely going to be so good even with the same writers. They clearly had some specific concepts and themes in mind with this movie that were explored well and there's really no need for more. when I was a kid, I hated metroman for his reasons, but now I'm grown, I completely understand metroman
Metro Man was tired of always being a hero. It's not that he dislikes saving people, but rather felt like that he never really had a choice.
He decided to MAKE a choice, and chose to give up crime-fighting and go into retirement.
He away be of what the city love him to be, there savior. But now he realized that he should have become someone that he love to be instead.
Metroman's message is often overlooked, it's alright to help others and all, but you are not responsible for anyone's happiness, you should come first on your list of priorities, and no matter how much better the world would be with your help, if you are not happy, then what's the point? Do what you love to do and be who you want to be, and don't let anyone or anything stop you or make you feel wrong for doing so.

What about moral responsibility? If you can help someone, you should. You are not responsible for that, but no decent would ever shake your hand knowing that you could have saved someone's life and just chose to focus on yourself.

This movie is one of the most underrated animations ever. It subverted the superhero tropes so well. There were so many hidden detail and easter eggs. I think the reason Megamind mispronounced so many words because he wasn't allowed to go to school and had to teach himself English. The mispronunciations were ones that someone who isn't a native speaker and doesn't understand how illogical the english language is. "School" wouldn't look like it has a "sk" sound. Maybe he pronounces them that way because he is so intelligent that he assumes everyone else in saying it wrong because it doesn't make sense.

I'm really glad that you directly addressed the whole nice-guys-that-aren't-actually-nice/idea of women only wanting "bad guys" issue and recognized it in the movie. That's very refreshing to see, especially from an all-male group. And I agree, they did a great job at highlighting the subject in Megamind. Especially since it's so pervasive in our society, but so rarely talked about. One of the many reasons why Megamind is one of my favorite animated films.

Someone might have already mentioned it but yes Metroman was heavily inspired by Elvis.
Elvis himself loved the idea of being a superhero or a secret agent, he was rather inspired by Captain Marvel Jr. aka one of the Shazam family Freddy Freeman.
Also the original story for Megamind, or Mastermind as he was called, was more of an R rated comedy.
So glad this movie has made such a comeback over the years, it was so overshadowed by Despicable Me originally. Great reaction.

This movie ended up getting overshadowed by Despicable Me, both having character named "Minion" but being much more toy marketable, but this was always the better movie. It touched on themes like Nice Guy Syndrome and destiny vs. desire, and had an amazing soundtrack.
I like how Metro Man wasn't just an arrogant jerk who was full of himself, but someone who much like Megamind never felt he had a choice. He got the lot in life that led to the existence Megamind wanted to build, not the one MM wanted. And even in spite of their lifelong rivalry, he understood Megamind was just as lost as he was and wanted to inspire him in the end.

it really is such a fantastic film ! I think what makes it so good and what made and makes animated films good in general is when they don't underestimate what kids can take and what they can actually deal with. You guys touched upon that as well, it has very adult themes and is definitely a film that can be watched and enjoyed by adults as well and I don't know but whenever animated movies or tv shows directed towards families find that perfect balance between darkness/ seriousness and comedy/ wholesomeness it's always a hit! Really seems to be the perfect formular. Funny and lighthearted enough to be tolerable over the whole run time for younger viewers but serious and hard- hitting enough with deep messages for the adults to enjoy

  • @A42AI
    @A42AI 11 місяців тому +2

I love how they show the different grades of good and bad/evil with different characters. Like how it's made pretty obvious that Roxanne is the true hero with her actions, but she's so humble that no one ever considers her one. The scene where they're talking about what makes a true hero and finding someone who embodies those things, and she's literally standing right in front of him while her qualities are being listed off. She's the first one to always do the right thing. In this way, it also shows how she and Megamind are genuinely compatible, because they're both good people. Also that metroman knew Megamind was just playing at being bad the whole time and considered him a buddy. The depth of writing is brilliant.
It's a bit frustrating that people feel like crying is what makes a movie a masterpiece or not though. This film is perfectly constructed with fantastic character writing and delivers on many other emotions. The focus is just different than the usual Pixar or serious Dreamworks stuff, but I think it's on level with them and even exceeds in a lot of aspects. HTTYD 2 is good but it's actually kind of messy in some ways in comparison to this. Not every movie needs to make you cry and it's "failure" to do so shouldn't be used against it. Just different genres, and a movie can be a "5" in comedy/drama, or a "5" in drama/fantasy etc. There's room for all of it.

This is, by far, my favorite superhero movie! And has been since it came out. I love the way Metroman and Megamind's stories mirror one another - they both feel trapped in a story role they can't escape, and Metroman knows if he comes back, he'll be locked into that cycle all over again. He's tired of feeling like he has to live his life living up to other people's expectations, which is definitely something people coming from wealth and prestige struggle with!. I love that he chooses to fade into obscurity and work quietly on his music. And I love how supportive he is of Megamind when they could have easily written him out and not referenced him again.
There's just so many neat elements to this story about choosing your own path, doing the things you love, and changing your mind later in life. It's definitely a movie easily aimed at older children and adults, and it rides that line better than most other movies to come out today. There really aren't many that get away with including messages and teachings directly relevant to adults.
