So what you talking about in this video...already happening. Check this PS4 review www.psu.com/review/34447/elex-review this piece that gave it 3/10 brought down meta score of PS4 version to just 59% ...

But its so damn uninformative. Compared to lets say ACG review. I always get butthurt when I see someone like this getting paid to write them...more so when it affects metascore. Which ofc I don't care for myself if its high or not I'll play it anyway but what about poor devs? More so what about people that swear by metacritic score like its law?

What I really love about your previous videos, is that you put context and examples to explain the niche qualities of ELEX (and PB games). Like those you made about the combat.
Just maintain that level of quality in your video writing.
All the best for your channel.

One reviewer (SilentRob) playing it early on Neogaf is saying that it has some of the deepest choices and consequences he has ever seen. Even seemingly mundane side quests can have multiple outcomes and swerves that will not become evident for sometimes 20 hours later. That is the kind of stuff going on underneath the hood of the 'jank' that most people focus on instead. Link:

Thank you for taking the time to talk about this game. I'm someone who missed the boat on PB's previous titles and am going into Elex pretty blind. First impressions didn't exactly dazzle me, but after doing some research into who PB is and what Elex is supposed to be, I've put in more playtime and have certainly come around to its charm.

PB games are not for everyone and even ACG was pretty surprised with it. I have a feeling that this will def. gonna be a great PB game for the PB fans, but its not for your avarage consumer. It does not even have to be. As long as PB fans are happy its great. Good video like always. Glad I am subbed, looking forward to your videos.

Just keep doing what you're doing man. I can already see the negativity that will be directed at this game coming and it's not even out yet. I would absolutely love to see you "review the review", so that at least someone with a positive attitude towards the game and someone who's willing and able to put the work in to actually experience it can show a bit of pushback against that.

  • @Bulansky
    @Bulansky 7 років тому +1

Very good points, I will subscribe to you. I see too many people reading some lies and trolling reviews and thinking they're true. I see many reviewers being bad at reviewing.
They do it too subjectively and refuse to allocate enough time just as you said to understand the game and be able to give valid points. It's not just one or two, it's too many and their bad reviews CAN and WILL hurt sales, all due to them being unwilling to understand the game and their viewers blindly following their views.
And then there's the people incapable of tweaking some settings or with PCs infested with who knows how many viruses that complain the game runs bad, or it doesn't launch or something is wrong. I don't have a high-end PC but I run the game really well, it looks really good in my opinion and it runs perfectly, all with a little maintenance of my PC, which at most requires a little time spent on Google and basic English. They leave reviews out of spite and out of ignorance.
And personally, if I don't like a game in the first few hours due to gameplay, or story for example, I don't leave a bad review, it simply is not my cup of tea. If the game is a cashout for example, that deserves bad reviews of course, but otherwise I think it's easily abusable. I tried a game similar to Divinity once, did not like it, not my style of game but I did not leave it a bad review, because I was not in the position to do so.

Yeah, for people who understand how to approach and play a Piranha Bytes game, Elex is fantastic. Meanwhile, those who expect to have their hand held and/or want flash are making laughable comparisons to Skyrim and Mass Effect, while writing the game off because they can't level up enough, get good gear and feel powerful straight out of the gate. They will never give the game enough of a chance to see where it shines because of the old school and uncompromising design.

I really appreciated your knowledge of PB's games and the previous videos you did on Elex so I subscribed immediately.
I'm looking forward to see all the content that you will come out with regarding this game, because as you, a fan of PB's games since the original Gothic and will sink my teeth into another wonderful PB game.
Early reviews say that the world/quests/choices & consequences are fantastically well done (which is a signature of PB games), but there is some jankiness to be had and bugs which is expected and those things can be patched out later.
I value story above anything else in my games so I know for a certain with only a few minutes of checking out a streamer playing this game that this will be one of my favorite games this year.

Given the size of their team and their intent / objective - I agree with you completely in terms of the reviewers, they have to churn games over to make money. Being 12-15 hours in I completely agree that time for this is the key. Nice video and great analytical intent! Subdddd!

Welp, fired it up on PS4 last night and so far so great. Once you get past the intro the world is incredible and has that 'hand-crafted' vibe all over the place. With the jet pack, verticality and carefully constructed environments exploration feels almost endless. Combined with the choices, consequences and build variety this game is ultra strong in the areas that count. As for gameplay, it is definitely a step above Risen and actually has controls like that of Dark Souls (not as polished, of course) on a controller. So, if you are familiar with that, you should be fine.

Great analysis in your past vids. I hope Elex does well but it's gonna be a rough ride and a game like this is almost guaranteed to have big problems at release. In my experience PB games tend to be more than the sum of their parts. Whereas individual systems might seems janky or unrefined it all comes together in a way that surpasses one's expectations.
Imo Risen 3 got undeservedly and ironically sandwiched between the hardcore Gothic purists who found it too casual and casuals who couldn't get past its initial difficulty. I joined the Mages and used swords, guns, power gloves and magic and it was really fun to have so many tools at your disposal and use them all as the mood strikes you. Being able to turn into a parrot and fly was cool too. It was a pretty easy game past a certain point but still well crafted.

I feel like this comment would be more relevant under your first vid (the one about simulatons vs scripted events) but whatever. Do you know of Kenshi ? I'm asking you this because, I'm liking what you are doing for this game on this channel, and I think I understand it perfectly. Although I am not as enthusiastic as you seem to be sometimes, I certainly want to give Elex a chance. Now, why am I asking you about that kenshi thing ? It's because I am curious.
Kenshi could be considered the absolute antithesis of most PB games (is it also the case with Elex ? I don't know yet !). Or maybe it's just that it goes farther than PB games in some of its aspects. In Kenshi, you are no hero, there is no quests/storylines or goals other than those you make for yourself. There is you, your skills, and a huge open world to explore and fight in. Now, based on your first vid, I think you would love kenshi, because it has all of the things you were excited about in your first vids. it's a simulation. Almost nothing is scripted, aside from some dialogs and events. You can go and get yourselve enslaved or eaten by cannibals. You can get caught stealing and thrown to prison for a time, or have a bounty on your head and disguise yourself. You can build an army, a city, and go hunting gigantic beasts. It's pretty amazing, and seeing your vids on Elex, I was all "Oh, I must talk him into Kenshi, he's sure to love it" ! And yet know that it will be very different from Elex, who still relies heavily it seems on scripted events, quests and everything.
Anyway, eagerly awaiting your next vids on Elex !

you are the first rational guy I found so far .... I have realized long ago that most review made by metacritic and other sites that are supposed to be objective are just partial review based on a few hours of play in a game ... it's amazing how when it comes to movies ... people review THE WHOLE MOVIE right ? Nobody watches 30 minutes of a movie than review it ... but when it comes to games we get reviews based on ONLY 30 % of the game or less or something like that ... wtf ? I think it should be the same.. Play the entire game until the end and if you don't have time then don't review it at all ... that's what I would do in their places.

"Mahlzeit is one of the few people that fully understand the game in english" Yeah, because he is german :/ I know there are a few english speaking fans of Piranha Bytes out there but what I as a german can see on english channels is mostly just unreasonable hate towards Piranha Bytes. When I saw the reviews of Angry Joe for Risen I couldnt believe that this guy is so popular because he was just talking bullshit and wasnt even trying to play the game. And his viewers think he is alright. It makes me very sad how Piranha Bytes Games are treated in the US.
But it's nice to see that regardles of all this Bullshit some people like you can understand the magic of Piranha Bytes Games. Keep up the good work!

Huh. Its... really not that complicated a game. The melee system has a combo meter, stagger and damage, the range has a hover. Build is just a question of what weapons and perks you're unlocking, with a "you will get everything eventually" mentality plastered on it.

That's what sad about mainstream reviews, and the sheep that follow them. The reviewers rarely give games the true time and admiration they deserve. Yet people take the scores like they are the word of god. When it's most of the time, some casual, closed minded, gamer. Rushing through the games to get the review done. Cause it's their job.

Luckily for me I do not pay attention to reviews of a game. I buy a game if it interests me, not a critic. I watch Angry Joe cause I love the way he picks games apart and if this game winds up on his chopping block I am ok with it. I have never played a Gothic game but when I saw this in the works many months ago I was instantly hooked.
And when I got in the game and i got my head handed to me by a mutated giant rooster thing and realized I am going to have to learn how to play, lets just say Ive been going to work with 3 hours or less of sleep past 5 days. This is fun and I can't wait to beat it and try a different faction.

I've stopt caring about review notes for PB games long time ago. Only one, what i care about, is if that game is Gothic alike, or not, and if it makes fun to play. Technical aspects were never the strongest point of PB games, and were never the most important one. For me. But i see many reviewers, which are punishing those games because of technical aspects too strong, and - with years - also more and more of those, who have never played Gothic games, or even Risen, but are crying like little girls, that the game doesn't look next-gen. Yeah, it looks old. Its not for everyone. But, for sure, this is the game for everyone, who loved Gothic 1 and 2. I am also always saying, that Gothic 3 had a great potential, but wasted. Huge world, green terrains, snow terrains, desert terrains, great diversity. Without cutting this to few smaller maps. It's good to see now, that Elex is trying to make the same thing one more time, this time - maybe - little bit better ;). BTW, about what author said: i see a lot of Elex reviews now. I am wondering, how much time all those reviewers have spended with this game. And with which game version.

_"He is one of the few english streames that actually understand the game."_
Don't you see this as a problem in itself?
It is all too easy to claim that gamers "just do not understand the game". Because it is the job of the damn game to _make_ me understand and not my job to try harder to understand what the hell is going on.
Elex might be the greatest RPG in the world, but when after 7 or 10 hours of gameplay I still have no feeling of progression, because I still fight with a lead pipe and when I still have no clue what the hell is going on, because the game fails to give me the feeling all of this will actually lead somewhere, then chances are high that I will never see the "greatest RPG" part.
_Especially_ when the game actually _does_ look somewhat crude and outdated at least in places, when the animations _do_ look awkward and stiff, when the combat system _does_ feel lackluster and, most important, when the AI is utterly broken and my companion sheaths his weapon and simply walks away _in the middle of a fight._
See, I am a working man and the time I have to play games is limited. I have no problems in investing dozens or even hundrets of hours into a game, but the game needs to give me the damn feeling that it is actually worth it. And to be honest, games like "Caves of Qud" are doing a much better job in this regard than Elex does.

  • @neothaka

You realizing what you're saying right? Game reviewers by default should care about games. If this game can't keep their attention throughout the time they invested in it, that is testimony to how bad it is. A good game in a particular genre will grab anyone's attention as long as they are into that genre. I doubt IGN put the NBA review game on this game.
Dismissing big interview sites as useless or biased is as valid as regarding the opinions of a PB fanboy as s proper standard for measuring game quality. That's why games like Original Sin and TW3, both are very lengthy, get good praise. Their size is irrelevant at the end of the day, it's how the reviewers perceives their time with the game that matters. A good game will make people want to finish it, a bad/mediocre one will quickly cause people to lost interest.
Please stop making excuses for negative reviews on this game. The majority of them are well grounded.

The quality of ELEX, through its world and its systems, only shines through over time; the cutscenes are terrible (especially at the beginning) and much of the starter content is sub-par. PB presents a fully-functional, self-contained world, that they just drop you into. D:OS2 (an excellent game btw) and TW3 (an awful game but an okay interactive story) are front-loaded in the extreme.
If you don't like RPGs with real, lived in worlds and rigorously self-consistancy and complex systems that force player choice, and instead want a spellbinding blockbuster story, you probably won't find much to like in ELEX.

To be fair, Risen 2 and 3 sucked, and Risen, as great as it was on PC, didn't stop the 360 port from being awful. That said, everything else was spot on.

Gamers are fucking (literally) stupid nowadays, graphics whoring is over the top. Gameplay hardly matters anymore and it warms my heart that some studios (like PB) still care about it. The biggest dissapointment with this game (for me) is that it's not Gothic. Anyway I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
