This is Swedish melancholy. New Year is in the middle of the darkest and coldest time of year in Sweden. We are more tired and melancholic than ever, and it feels like we will never see the sun again. Then comes New Year and we are happy, because we know that the days will be longer and the sun will return - but not yet. So we are still melancholic ...

    Greate reaction, thank you!
The song actually underlines the contrast between worries and hopes. The song was written towards the end of 1979 and released in January 1980. It was the height of the Cold War, Sweden being halfway between Moskow and London. When Soviet submarines were detected by the Swedish coast guard in the Swedish archipelago, the mood of people all around Sweden changed dramatically. This is the meaning of the lyrics, "And the morning seems so gray / so unlike yesterday". The song's first lines, "No more champagne And the fireworks are through." mean that the good, happy times came abruptly to an end.
The chorus, "Happy New Year, Happy New Year, may we all have a vision now and then / of a world where every neighbor is a friend," is a reference to the enmity existent during the Cold War, expressing hopes for a better world, for friendship between neighbors (nations).
The second half of the second verse, "Oh, yes, man is a fool / and he thinks he'll be OK / driving on, feet of clay / never knowing he's astray / keeps on going anyway." expresses the foolishness of the conflict between the West and the Communist Block, or in general the conflicts between people.
It is one of the scarce instances in which ABBA makes a political statement but dressed up in a seemingly innocent form, full of metaphors and double meanings. It is not the kind of song you would like to listen to at a New Year Party.

Great choice of song to this particular New Year. She's singing about a bad year being over and having hopes for a better year to come which we can all relate to, and which you spoke about beautifully. They have an amazing range of songs, recorded over 100 tracks and are one of the most successful groups of all time. Try The Winner Takes it All, Fernando, Money Money Money, I Have a Dream, Chiquitita, Mamma Mia and Knowing Me, Knowing You for a taste of their bigger hits. Some of the less well known ones are equally good, if not better - Should I Laugh or Cry?, As Good As New, The Day Before you Came, The Visitors, Andante Andante and Why Did It Have to be me? to name just a few. Enjoy your Abba journey.

    Hello again
    and Happy New Year
This is an ABBA classic for these dates A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All the ingredients of ABBA
I agree with You that the lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus
It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope
"Happy New Year" is a great song from the 1980 album "Super Trouper" (which includes the homonymous song and "The winner takes it all" among others)
It has a version in Spanish: "Felicidad" which was a hit here in my country Argentina
But although this song is so beautiful, it is not in my ABBA Top 20
With this I simply mean that ABBA has many extraordinary songs and it is very difficult and unfair to choose one and postpone another among so much musical wealth
I hope for your future reactions to ABBA songs
    I suggest specialy:
"Waterloo" at the Eurovision Song Contest in London 1974
(They compete with 16 other European countries and their triumph gives them world knowledge)
"S.O.S." their second great international success and that defines their identity as a pop group
"Chiquitita" at the Concert for UNICEF in United Nations 1979
Also, if you want to see them live at a concert, I suggest:
    "Does your mother know" and
    "Hole in your soul"
    ua-cam.com/video/JEyYTANSPj4/v-deo.html
(both songs in continuous, at the close and after more than 20 songs and two hours, of his memorable concert in London 1979)
I wrote this and now I think
if you want a funny moment now
take the live version that give before, You will enjoy this 8 minutes with all energy and power in the stage
    Best wishes to you
and hope this year 2021 find us celebrating life with good music

it is important to understand the context in which this song was written. In time of the Cold War. The United States and the then Soviet Union competed to see who had more and better atomic weapons. There was a sense of fear and discouragement about the future. Remember that in places like Switzerland, people built their own nuclear shelters. That is why the song says that we do not know what will await us at the end of 1989. They are singing it in 1981.

This song by ABBA was poignant and beautiful. And as you were reacting I was reflecting on 2020 as well and thinking of the good things that came despite all of the problems. One of the good things for me was finding your podcast. You have added so much joy to the second half of my year. I did not know about reaction videos until I discovered you. And my love for music makes the experience of watching these reactions by you such a blessing. You have added joy to my year and I appreciate you for it so much. Thanks for the reaction. I think its a great New Years song. After the partying we need to work on making the world a better place. If your not willing to try and work for that then what's the point. Kinda an ABBA way of saying it's not just another reason to party. You should react to a Frida lead vocal song now. Bet you'd like "Super Trouper". It's about how lonely you can get while having fame. Don't worry they put an ABBA happy face on it as only they could.

It's classic Swedish and ABBA melancholy. So often they used minor key verses with upbeat choruses but with quite sad lyrics. This contrast, especially with those beautiful voices, somehow unsettle the listener emotionally. I think we also have to remember that this was written in late 1979/early 1980. This was still the time of the Cold War and Sweden was positioned next to a fairly sensitive region across the Baltic Sea from the Iron Curtain countries plus the old Soviet Union. Russian nuclear subs were sometimes turning up in Sweden's territorial waters. Sweden has long had a 'neutral' stance in international affairs but it was still a tense time given it's location between NATO countries and the Eastern Bloc. So the song reflects the concerns of those times and wondering if things will have improved a decade later.. ABBA have a ton more absolutely beautiful songs. If you ever get around to reacting to 'Gimme Gimme Gimme', make sure to go for the longer album version. It's a banger. Happy New Year too.

As someone who has terminal melancholy the juxtaposition of a Happy event with an underlying feel of sadness is not a new emotion and everyone feels it from time to time depending on the events happening in our lives. For most people it is not an everyday or longer situation. For some of us it seems we are unable to access the joy and happiness....ever. ABBA is singing about the situation that not everything is as it appears to be.
Reading below it appears as I am as out of step with my answer as I always seem to be. But there are as many answers as people so I hope mine sheds light on one of those many answers.
