I love both fighters, but holy cow is that such a depressing way to watch Sergio go out.. Giant baggy trunks falling off constantly and broken body. Yes, Cotto landed clean shots to hurt him bad in the first, but how much of Sergio was even in that fight to begin with? Half? That’s not a slight to Cotto, I’m a giant fan of his, but this was so sad to see such a great champ like Sergio go out like it

Thats not a good thing he had to fight cause he was ripped off during his career. That man had no business fighting even Cotto his leg was gone from Chavez Jr fight. He was a one leg fighter. Go watch the documentary of his career and how he got screwed so he had to fight when he shouldnt have been in a ring he was basically broke from bad contracts.
And Cotto still washed him, even before the six wins. Martinez was great but Cotto is a legendary badass!

A lot is said about Sergio's knees failing him but those shots in round 1 were perfect head shots. Ain't got nothing to do with his knees.
Of course it does because he couldn't get out of the way of the punches. His feet were a key part of his defense. Also if you don't have legs it's difficult to take a punch
Martinez has said his legs were fine and weren't the issue. The first left hook that staggered him he said it felt like he had been hit by a hammer and that took everything from him

I like Martinez, he was a solid champ, but he was getting his ass beat from the very first round BECAUSE he kept dropping his guard (as he always did) against one of the best left hooks at that time. Cotto was just the better fighter overall. Simple as that. No knee excuses.
This is a terrible take. Sergio had dominated the middleweight division for 4 years previously. It is clear he did not have the mobility in this fight. Listen to the commentary.
I know people saying Martinez had no legs in this fight, but the dude just couldn't get out of the way of the left hook either way. Just look at 3:15 of the first rd. After eating that shot and dropping to it, he still eats it. It's a combination of issues for Martinez, but I think a healthy 100% Martinez would still have trouble because he just can't get away from the shot.
Martinez was boxing fine until the left hook once he got caught it was over.
If this was Sergio Martinez when he fought Kelly Palivik, no knee injury and active, it would've been a different story.

What's off is Sergio Martinez had never fought a guy as skillful and as fast as Cotto is his career. Paul Williams came the closet I guess in terms of speed, but not skill

Im from PR, and i was excited for Cotto, but Sergio is my favorite middleweight, and this night, Maravilla was fighting with 1 leg, handicap.

Well then, Maravilla fought with no shoulder strenght and especially no knees(and again especially during this fight) and still did his best against arguably a prime Cotto. If only promoters and fighters alike wouldn't have avoided him up until when they "thought" he really had nothing left in his tank.

Miguel Cotto is a legendary Puerto Rican fighter that was top 10 pfp in his day, little older here but still won championship belts and even beat Martinez this fight, Shane Mosley, Margarito, Clottey, Malignaggi, Mayorga, and Zab Judah.
Sergio Martínez was legitimately a top 10 pfp at middleweight and beat Paul Williams, Kelly Pavlik, and imo edged it against Cintron.
