Martinez had no business fighting Cotto in his state. I'm sure he knew he was retiring and just wanted a one last big paycheck, but he was severely handicapped coming into this fight. Respect to him for even hanging in there as long as he did against a great like Cotto.

Martinez was over the hill, bad knees and at the end of his career for sure. You have to give him respect because he was beaten from the first round and fought with a warrior’s heart and great courage. Cotto has excellent boxing skills and fought a brilliant fight. He took command and landed good punches when the opportunity was there, defended well when it wasn’t, and showed great patience when he had Martinez hurt…never got excited and reckless. Cotto gave us some great fights.

I was at this fight I’m a huge cotto fan but I was so nervous for cotto I filmed the ring walks and announcing but I didn’t know what cotto would show up do I stopped filming before the round started biggest mistake of my life cotto came out on fire hooks to the body great jab vintage cotto and yes I know Martinez was past his prime but cotto was the underdog and only beat delvin Rodriguez in his last fight so I didn’t know what to expect it was one of the best nights of my life msg my favorite fighter making history and the Porto Rican parade the next day ny was lit my dad was somewhat of a older boxing fan Tyson Ali Frazier were his favorite fighters I told him Latin fighters are the ones to watch they leave it all on line which they did and it was a night to remember
Fighters that leave it all on the line and fight to the end come in all race or ethnicity Martinez quit so what do you have to say about that. Cotto would have beaten Martinez any time , you are just disappointed that Cotto whipped his ass .Martinez was running from the first time he felt miguel's power .
Todo un boxeador y caballero.....bendiciones infinitas....🙏
35:58 that Martinez's shorts are long and gives him a losing point as ref sees it touches the canvas.
Makes no difference
Doesn’t matter he got stopped
Martinez knees were shot at this point, he couldn’t move like he normally does. His pride made him agree to this fight, rather sad. Now a few years before he wouldn’t have demolished Cotto.
Miguel Cotto's fights were always a guarantee of quality of good boxing

I love both fighters dearly as I watched both come up on HBO. This was a hard fight for me to watch bc everyone knew this was a shot Martinez. His style relies heavily on fast feet & his legs were completely gone going into the fight.
Wow, I've never seen a boxer with a knee brace on both legs and didn't even know that was permitted within the rules! I think it hampered Martinez rather than helped him in the end. It looked like he couldn't get the full extension on his legs and, as such, couldn't get away quickly enough or square himself to deliver power to his shots, although he did have some good rounds in the fight, his best being 3 and 6. Even so, an absolute clinic by Cotto! Thank you Top Rank for archiving his legacy here! PS, as a Playstation gamer exclusively since '07, I dug the PS4 loading bar as the round indicator!
I agree, cotto is a humble person who accepted looses from all his opponent. Unlike, other fighters, brag about winning, even if thy didn't win.
You damn right!

good play Cotto...watching from the Philippines...
It doesn’t matter nobody ask you.
U can tell in the first seconds of the fight sergio was not moving around like normal and was very flat footed very unlike sergio at his prime. Also a year after this fight sergio was in the news promoting his gym and the news reporter asked sergio if they can dance and sergio politely said he can't because he has a bad knee
Don't fight with bad knees or any base injuries. It probably effecting his training too.
That's his fault for accepting the fight then. I mean, Cotto is also an enormously underrated fighter for his time because he fought in the same era as Pacquiao and Mayweather (who's face he actually dinged up pretty good), and was plaster-cheated by Margarito the first time they fought which he never really fully recovered from.
Those knees caused him this fight. He should have postponed this until he fully recovered from further surgery.
This fight probably paid for new knees but at the cost of losing the belt and career. I will say he went out on his shield like a true warrior tho. It's nice to see hear him calling fights now if I remember correctly he is with DAZN?
@E He this is the result of being a soccer player until 21 , running for 90 minutes is a knee destroyer.
@E He almost all soccer players fuck up their knees, human body is not made for 90 min running. And this Not counting training days, the attrition is guaranteed, some of my friends suffer from it and they are amateurs, soccer is joint destroyer.

as a cotto fan ill admit the knee did make a difference. That doesnt take credit from cotto but its obvious bro. I saw allot of Sergio Martinez fights dude always fought with his hands down and movement around the ring becuase ive seen allot of sergio fights i could tell right away his knees were shit but hey a win is a win.
You cant fight on bum knees bro. Same thing happened to benavidez when he fought crawford. Your legs are what give you your balance in this game
I am 100% agreeing with both of you. I’m js before the fight no one was picking cotto to win everyone thought that Martinez was gonna dominate him then when he didn’t they had the excuse and taking credit away from Cotto.
Only they werent excuses. Sergio legs looked completely shot in this fight. He had absolutely no business being in the ring with a fighter of Cotto level or at all actually. 39, 14 month layoff after both knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery. Cotto faced a fighter that was nowhere near what he was at his peak.
@@javiersalazar713 Well, had it been common knowledge that his knee surgery wasn't a 100% success, and that he needed to wear knee braces when doing any sort of movements. Well, the odds would not have been in Sergio's side. The healthy Martinez that dismantled Kelly Pavlik would have defeated Cotto, however, we got a shadow of his former self. It was clear from the opening bell that he did not have the same foot work. Not Cotto's fault, and he took care of business like he was supposed to against a lame duck. It is not one of Cotto's greatest accomplishments, I think beating Margarito in the second fight (despite his style being tailor made for Margarito) was one of his greatest accomplishments. This win is no different than his win against Yuri Foreman, another boxer that relied on movement, yet went into the ring with bad knees (FYI- Yuri can still fight, even with the limited mobility).

Cotto boxed perfectly , his moves nailed it every time ..Martinez boxed as good as he can ..his age doesn't mean anything ..it's .." There's always a boxer who comes along and takes out the old guy ..
Martinez such a great fighter,,when u watched his leg,u will see that it is not properly used!
Cotto one of the best fighter of all time he fight with the best fighter
Upset? Everyone knew this would happen
I want another Cotto already!

It would be greater upset if Sergio Martinez's knees is fully functional. He injured his knees prior taking this fight.
oh yes, hahaha EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES, Martinez was hurt before the fight but in the balls , looks like they cut his balls, he prefer to quit like a f coward that die on the ring, its whats happen with fabricated fake champions like him, He got his ass really kick!!
How much weight did Martinez lose in this fight? The state of them shorts.
