As a viewer, I can bluntly tell you what I'm here for: Path of Exile videos covering niche skills/items/interactions. PoE has so many creators that I usually watch only a specific type of video from each of them. It is extremely tough to grow out of that, good luck

If time allows it, maybe do a learning blender dev diary, UA-cam series or Twitch, on a different channel, and see if it takes/or where it takes you. You have that eye for finding niche and unique ideas, so maybe you'll also find that in blender, and an audience that will follow it. In the years of watching you through POE, it was always the concepts, theories and how you arrived at them that got me interested. I mean this as a compliment, but you have always been "left of center, with how you think." And that has always been refreshing, sometimes even sparking the same creative process in me as well. So thankyou for that. Whether successful or not you'll have that diary in your pocket, that you can look back on in 10 years, and maybe see another new direction you can go, or remember something that was forgotten that can drive you again.

I am grateful for your content. You are the person that taught me to explore beyond what is expected. Most impactful of your builds for me was old pathfinder stacking flask charges and recovering health each time he used flask, but those flasks with 7 charges when hit were used each time pathfinder got even touched... this was very special combo for me and stayed in my heart. And the same I think about your content. It stays in heart. It is cleaver and unique. Good luck on your new project, I will be watching with interest.

I've been a subscriber and patreon for years (PirateSpider) and here is my 5cents for what its worth. Do what makes you happy. When I watch someone, I tend to be able to tell if the person is enjoying themselves or not - and i cant watch someone who is doing something because they feel forced. I started following because of the wacky and weird things you make and the knowledge you hold but i would hate it if you feel trapped into doing something. I wish you all the best mate.. As one introvert to another- "you do you" as the saying goes :)

I've been watching you since back in the day (~3.0) - enjoying the creativity, depth and honesty of your videos. No hype, but a lot of ideas.
Thank you for sharing with us your personal dilemmas. I'm sure it's not easy to expose parts of yourself this way to the world. We do care.
Please note that by the time you're proficient in Blender modeling, AI tools could probably become really good - so maybe not the best long term strategy in terms of career?
I also agree with other comments that POE2 could revitalize the community, offer a lot to discover and perhaps smooth out the league boom-bust cycle. But maybe I'm just biased.
    P.S.
The first truly complex build I made on my own (after almost a decade of POE) is a falling zombie - heartbound loop - %100+ recoup autocaster, and it started with your video where you experiment with the falling zombie looping with itself.
    So thanks for that.

Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone, the things you're going through I'm sure many of us are struggling to go through as well. While I'm not a content creator, my personal life has been running through the same issues you have where I don't find as much joy in PoE and it's mostly because I'm not too happy with my personal life/career(or lack of). I'll remain subscribed because I enjoy your style of videos, I admittedly skipped anything D4 related because I simply don't like the game, but I've tuned in to most of your others. I'd say do whatever you enjoy and thats how you amass viewers/followers organically.

In my opinion it was very obvious which builds you enjoyed making and which ones you made because you had to. Your builds were really creative and out of scope so I think that was your niche. I think views are down because game and players got old. Please do what you enjoy. Like, if you dont want to grind for a build and people are willing to give items/currency, just make the builds. Dont force yourself to play the game, make currency so that you can try a build for UA-cam.

So, finished watching the video. I came here for the weird PoE builds and I don't know since when I am subscribed. Started PoE like 4 or 5 years ago with delve league and I do know this channel shortly after (but I think I joined your streams like only 2 years ago or so as regular viewer?).
If you wanna do Blender and Memes, go for it. There was a UA-cam channel called Dante Axe which made funny league of legends videos called Randomville for example. If you had such things in mind, it would be probably be fun to watch. Like, doing normal eater of worlds vs doing uber eater of worlds and the uber eater of worlds just grabs you with a tentacle and slams you around if you are not prepared😅
I am not so sure if I would continue watching streams or UA-cam videos that are not game-related. But as you said, if the income is not steadily with the PoE content then you need to have something else. And if it works out for you, cool

Hey Woolfio. This was a very raw video. Finding passion is what life is all about. The blender avenue looks like it gives you that drive; and the concept of being stuck in work is a very natural response. A zero to hero of someone learning blender and the thought processes and failures and successes and inspiration sounds very good. Unfortunately reality has a way of bringing our passions down.

I somewhat feel the same as you but in reverse. I have a successful career as a CAD Operator but I feel like I've missed the boat with my channel. Then I realized, we ALL have different timing. Personally for me its Gods timing. You've been a staple for me personally in POE and you should be absolutely proud of what you've accomplished. Listening to you speak about builds, its shocking how similar we think on that subject. One thing I can tell you is what my friend old me...ALOT of people dont watch the big boys, alot prefer smaller creators (i.e. not 100k subs). Who cares if someone else did something? Why does that mean you can't do it? What if your audience hasnt seen it or even heard about it? So you do it, because you love teaching and showcasing, period. Made alot of sense to me. Its always a good thing to take stock of your life, what you're doing, etc. Hope you find that balance you need brother.

Hi Woolfio, you certainly bring up some valid points. If after years of doing this you haven't gotten the results you were hoping for, then maybe it's time for a change. HOWEVER, keep in mind PoE 2 is just around the corner, that means a huge influx of new and returning players will be flooding into the game who will be desperate for content.
Events like Poe 2 are a huge opportunity for content creators, who knows, maybe this will be your golden ticket. So, before you quit gaming/streaming I would recommend you to take some time off (if you think you need it) and do some research on social media marketing strategies (there's plenty of material to read about this on the internet).
In this current market where there's a saturation of content creators, your content alone isn't enough to make you stand out anymore. So don't feel constrained about the content you want to make or feel that your audience would enjoy just because someone else is already doing it, do it anyway, just do it own your way.
Maybe also consider getting a part time job in the meanwhile to help you with your financial situation.

Hey man, best of luck finding that passion project you want that is going to drive you forward, if your already past the point where you are able to work on this without turning towards distraction, then you already have a great start, I think you have done the introspection required that now you just need to set some kind of vision or goal to move towards that involves that passion with a finish line you can reach towards and grow. Its a difficult balance not to burn out, the first couple of starts might stutter but it really does sound like your making great first move, so best of luck chief, your content is always interesting and niche, I am sure you will find your way towards something as good if not better with this next step in your story. I am a 17 year game dev vet, and I am a firm believer in the idea that anyone can make games, I have been doing it for half my life and still feel like I am a million steps behind everyone else but don't ever let that get you down, its something that should be a drive, that drive to learn and grow and improve like you see many others doing. On the blender learning front, one thing I found that helped me was to find some finished blender assets, and just look at changing a few things to it, just stepping through someone else's process and setup within blender tended to help my learning of it by leaps. GL sir, looking forward to your next vid, hopefully commenting on this vid will force the YT magic algorithm to make sure your triumph turns up in my feed when you post it (also WIP stuff is fun too) :)

I kinda understand how you feel, seems content creation is more like a normal business.
Remind me of the start of pandemic when my family still has a small restaurant, it was mentally taxing.
Maybe it's better to try to get a side job other than content creation to fill the gap, like some streamer.
Back office job for small -medium media company, editor, translator etc, since you have content creation experience.
So since most of the time you'll be in the front of a computer, you can steal the time to finish your own video
and then stream at night and weekend.

UA-cam algorithms seem to be very strict in what it suggests. Refreshing main page pretty much only shows results from the biggest creators and often even fairly big creators get disappeared in the bit jungle. Your videos always show when they come but that's probably because i always thumb up your stuff. I guess you just are not recommended to PoE content consumers unless searching for specific stuff(when ever i get a weird build idea, i find your vid doing it :) And soon youtube creators will be fighthing vs flood of AI bots, if not allready,, and only the largest creators survive from YT alone.Hopefully Twitch is better source of income for you.

I'm not a UA-camr but I've heard a number of times that the algorithm punishes when you diversify content on an established channel. It actually makes sense: your 'legacy' subscribers won't be as interested in the new content, so they won't watch it as much, and UA-cam will not recommend it. So you get less views and reach for that video, and might affect future ones as well. A second channel might work, though it's starting from scratch to some extent. I don't envy your current dilemma.
If you want a piece of advise from someone about the same age as you, don't put all your eggs in the same basket and have a contingency plan.

Working is suffering while smiling but my unasked opinion is that even the lowest of part time entry level jobs can give you some peace of mind and enhance your passion-time. It's not a good feeling when your favourite thing to do becomes your coping mechanism and the only thing you can do... I've been there recently and I hope I'm moving past that point but it's a sore pain to leave your comfort zone, even if it's tainted.
I really liked your analysis on the poe1 day and death cycle and the one one on poe2 going "mainstream" with big personalities jumping on the already too little pie. Kinda chilling but very lucid.
It's also real that nowadays most viewers skim youtube for a leaguestarter build that can also do all content that is tanky and yet deals tens of millions of damage and can farm the best items in the neverending rat race that is softcore trade, rather than apply and find joy in piecing together interactions like the ones you manage to find. It's hard as a content creator to compete with the fear of getting "baited and shamed" for trying something unsupervised and maybe failing the leaguestart.
I hope you find your niche where your content can shine unbothered by people with extreme followings or production value. Personally I'm here because I wasn't recommended any videos from you this league and was wondering what new tricks you were up to... Side note, of your more recent content i personally really liked your quick analysis and showcase on the new transfigured gems in the yt shorts format. I'm really fond of searching "how does x look like" and finding it :D You have a very charming, relaxing and recognizable voice and i found it perfectly suited for explaining things simply.
    Best of luck o7

It's an interesting thing to think about...
At the end of the day, these things are just games that people spend some time to release nervous or just to relax and took off some time to the "real real" life of a human being.
I love play videogame, but turns out, at the ages comming, you realise that it does not provide you growth and possibility of acchive some real goals in your life.
UA-cam is an industry that can be thrilled some those who are lucky or doesn't care how the things work to elevate numbers and I think this change the shape of reallity, like a kid gets houndres of money posting some stupid video about dance, cloth or dropping objects from the stairs.
On the other hand, you have to studdy, graduate and work really hard to gain some money, but some thing people doen'st see, is the fact that they are developing skills and hability to interact with our society and make this life a better place to live, for yourself, family and to the others...
I hope you keep some space in your life to do what makes you happy, but at the same time, do the hard things you have to do to make your future life great and stable.

Since 3.21 I only enjoyed brotato and killing floor2, which I played with my nephew. Maybe you should take a 50/50 aproach with youtube/twitch/outside job.

GGG's strategy to do "side-job dev" on POE2, makes POE1 leagues overlast their welcome. This kills viability for being POE1 focused streamer for time being. IF and it's a strong if, POE2 comes out and provides a good content/change between POE1 leagues, maybe things go better. Until then, it's dire especially if released league sucks balls.

Laughs aside, most of what was said in the video, lets say that I can put my self in your shoes, and find my self in a somewhat similar outcome which is both intriguing and upsetting! If it were me ... then yeah a practical mind of a back up or light side income would be some fresh air, but with UA-cam Shorts sprinkled about to solve both possible vibes of guilt and/or obligations(i personally don't like feeling in debt to others that much) and also possible or onset cases of burnout and content dry spells. It would be a shame to lose you as a "content creator" both for poe and other things, in my opinion.
First things first, and that may sound abrasive: if youtube doesn't work out for you as a job, maybe you shouldn't treat it as a job. I know that ad revenue is nice and all and the fact that you have patreons can be a nice thing, but you noticed yourself how it also shackles you to keep doing stuff you might not even enjoy doing and even makes you feel bad/guilty at times. why not do it as a side project? (I know that would require you to find a main job really, but it's ridiculous really how *full* the youtube landscape is of people trying to force to make a living with it instead of just doing it for the fun or the challenge or whatever)
this is criticism coming from a good-natured person, mind you. just worried that you'll end up with nothing in the end if your plans don't work out, and that would be the worst.
this also plays into my next point though - if you want to keep doing it like that and are actually that easily distracted or hyperfocused once you bite yourself into something:
treat it MORE like a job. do blender in the mornings for like 5 hours, then take a break, then use your evenings for leisure gaming. I know it's hard to enforce a schedule like that onto yourself if you're the only one holding yourself accountable, but it might help you in the long run by getting consistent time into something that you love (blender) while also not driving you crazy and balancing yourself out
on the topic of blender as a whole: I love indie games and would be interested to see what you can come up with, but please don't set yourself up for failure. something that I immediately thought of (and you must have too) is that you might not even be able to finish the poe-character creation screen before poe2 releases with an entirely new one...and then your memes will be old news already. it's hard to look into the future to create the content of tomorrow, but just keep that in mind. it's good to have a goal, but maybe you should start smaller (if you have immediate ideas, why not finish the models, put them in front of a static background and do the videos you wanna do for now, while working on the actual background regularly)
man, it's really hard to bring across everything I wanted to say since I finished the video first before starting my comment just in case you mention something and i look like an idiot pointing it out before hearing it lol
    but tl;dr
    keep doing what you love
be mindful of how you do it though and reevaluate how much it's worth in the end
stay strong woolfio, it's a wolf eat wolf world out there

Before throwing yourself into the realm of game dev, maybe you should consider simpler things like little movies/clips. PoE themed animations could be interesting. (not sure how ggg would allow that though) Although, it may not require as much technical knowledge as making games, it still needs some storytelling/writing/scripting on top of camera work and stuff like that.
3D modelling isn't really something 'self-contained' you can pickup and do whatever with, it always end up being a subset of tools in a way wider range of required tools to produce anything. Not only that but textures, shaders and animations are whole beasts on their own themselves, and pretty much required to do anything with 3D models.
I've been lazing around with my own learning of game dev over.. More than a decade, now, damn. This field is so vast, mainly because it's an agglomeration of multiple already vast fields, you really can't expect to go anywhere without a solid plan and goals. Just take a look at how many new "devlog 1' there are on youtube over the last few years, and the proportion of them never releasing a single game. And remember most people don't go and do devlogs. This is literal graveyard for hopes and dreams.

    • @Woolfio

That is exactly the plan. Do some animations first, which will serve me as learning process and then see if I could transition into UE5 for some light game.
PoE themed animations are transformative, not literal assets from game and I would not be selling them, so I don't think that there would be issues.
And yes, textures is one of my nightmares. Applying texture alone is nothing difficult, but unwrapping more complex model is rather difficult for me.
Taking 1 step is always better than not taking any step and then later thinking about it and all the "what ifs".

I recommend making another channel for videos other than POE. I can explain a little bit how recommendation works. First it will recommend to people who like you content specifically, then to people who kind like the same type of content(POE), then for people who kind like the same genre(ARPGs), then for broad audience. It can have more layers. and this is not a total recommendation for example videos it recommends like to 80% to layer 1(your people)> then 10% for POE people, then 5% for ARPs fans and the rest is broad audience. If it pops off it will recommend to more people in the next layers. There is high variance in the broad audience because less people were recommended so generally what happens is a video goes from your audience to broad but it can happen that your video pops of with broad audience but your main audience it will also be recommended more but it will be slower until explodes. Now how does that affect non-poe videos in your channels? It makes so your next videos get's less views making it recommend to less people in each "pool". There is also the frequency of upload. This is very broad but there is basically 6 channels categories: frequently schedules videos, frequently unscheduled videos, unfrequently scheduled videos, unfrequently unscheduled videos, frequently mixed(unsque+ scheduled), unfrequently mixed. Basically if your channel will be put in one of those categories. Scheduled videos do better and will be recommended more often. Frequently uploads make your recently upload videos recommended but youtube will not recommend old videos much unless someone already watched a recent video from your channel. If your channel doesn't make frequent uploads youtube will however recommend your old videos. Anything above 1 month is not considered scheduled by youtube anymore. Mixed channels are considered 2 channels by youtube and engage with both systems(but they are reduced by some ammount). I strongly recommend creating a new channel for new content. Good luck trying anything new woolfio.

Well those jobs would require interacting with people a lot more. That is my kryptonite :D
And yeah, I will do videos about PoE2 and still continue with PoE1 in some form.

I'm not trying to be mean but a lot of the suggestions like youtube shorts or making blender content are missing the point of this video OR don't really know how making money on youtube is not easy at all. Not that I have much experience myself, just did some editing and youtube shorts for vtubers, I think if you want to make a lot of money AND use blender, that would be a great place to look at, there are sooooo many small-ish vtubers who are desperate for props, models, rigging, overlays, backgrounds, stingers, twitch emotes and a million other things, you obviously have no interest in anime stuff, but people want all sorts of things beyond the model itself, if you want EASY money, I think that's the "easiest" place you will find it, even if you aren't interested in it right now or the anime stuff turns you off YOU WILL DEFIITLEY CHANGE YOUR MIND once people start paying you 300-500 USD for a stupid chair or something. I've had too many heartbreaks and dead end dreams so I just quit everything and went back to school LUL, anyways I hope you find success doing something you enjoy, it's definitely possible.

Oh, I do love anime :D And I have been thinking about this. Even beginner could do some props for vtubers, since it is growing market (although not sure for how much longer). But right now I have no idea how vtubing works and how it is rigged but I would gladly do some props if my skills would be sufficient and free of charge if it is not complicated work. Would be good practice for me.
Never really looked much into vtubing so I don't even know places where vtubers would look for some freelancers.

The reason people get paid, is because they are providing a service that other people either cannot, or don't want to provide... unfortunately content creation is extremely saturated and competitive.
One possibility for making some small money while learning blender is to create STL's for tabletop gamers (dnd/warhammer/etc)... there's quite a market for them, though you'll be competing against some very good artists from very low cost of living countries.

I will most likely do more WUATU and fewer build videos, unless builds are successful of use interesting mechanics.

@@Woolfio i believe i have watched all the WUATUS and some of them more than once, and i go back to them if a need something really specific. It would be really good to have more and to have some of them upated (if they change or the mechanic change). Cheers o7

ARPGs are kinda difficult to make content for unless youre milking the algorithm like Rhykker

When you make very niche content, you can't expect a large audience, and many videos you put out i just skip but they are just not interesting to me, since i don't really mess around with build making in poe. but something everyone else does that you should too is make review video and sharing your thought on current state of poe, everyone say something different, or have different takes on certain parts of the game. You have done a few in the past i think, but its been a while.

about content creation: don't be scared of following trends, people watch trends, you can add your own spice to it by finding niche interactions, that's how i found your channel, i was hyped by a poe league, then i saw one of your video and i stick to your channel
play Hero Siege when other PoE streamers play it, same for Torchlight infinite, same for Diablo, use that opportunity to create new momentums, you have a solid base of ARPG viewers, don't underestimate yourself, your content is niche sure, but is very well made and very enjoyable to watch
    don't give up
ideas for content: "Current League review, what's good, bad, score, then go core yay/nay", "Your favorite past league", "your top 3 builds", "wishlist for next league" etc

I think it is tough to be both a twitch streamer and youtuber at the same time and expect equally good results on both platforms consistently. You got to choose one and concentrate on it and grow that first before doing the other. You can see that most popular poe streamers do not have many youtube videos unless its at league launch with their usual starter vids. Their main income are from streaming. While those who pump out many videos a week on youtube rarely stream. Having a niche content is good but your content is a little too niche and often not viable in end game poe. This attracts very little viewership because as you said everyone has limitted time to watch videos. Why would most people want to watch a video of a failed build when i can see it just from the title alone. I have 700k points on your twitch channel and i do not even watch your videos. I do wish you all the best and condolences. I lost my dog 2 years ago and i have never recovered from his loss.

I literally don't know a single creator who puts out many PoE youtube videos but does not stream. It takes 2-3 days of playing just to get character build sort of ready. No reason to not stream if you still taking so much time playing.
Time it takes to edit video is another topic.
If you watch stream a lot, then you already know what the video is going to be, so it is understandable. Twitch for many is more of a background sound, with ability to interact in real time.
I am the opposite, I almost do not watch streams, because I cannot pause it or else I may miss something. I often have videos to listen to while I do other things.

@@Woolfio i think what i meant was that you need to consider if you want to be a streamer first youtuber second or youtuber first streamer second. a quick search of mathil/steelmage/ziz youtube shows they upload an average of 1 vid per wk with 30-40k views. i seriously do not think that this is their bulk of their income. they are earning from twitch subscribers. the viewership of poe videos in general are never really high and on the opposite you have channels like fastaf that do not stream (to the best of my knowledge) that still has 10-15k view per videos but they also have a patreon to earn extra cash. if you look at other games like d4 and LE, there are some "content makers" that pump up clickbait title videos that get views but never stream as well. another good example of someone who streams but does not upload much is Tatiantel2 on twitch. For several years i have seen his twitch viewership grow from sub 10 to now crossing 150s every night consistently and i have about 500k points on his channel and a quick search of his youtube only shows 28 videos uploaded.

As a player of POE unless they change things like scarabs. Go back on those changes. I'll not be in the POE world until POE2 comes out. The last league hurt my enjoyment of the game a lot, and it wasn't all about the league itself. The truth is if I'm not playing POE I really don't care about the game. I think POE2 will end up being a fresh start for a lot of people as we leave POE1 behind for good.
