    I just watched this video since I am making masks.... again. I have used all but the adjust size with print idea. initially all of my masks had filter pockets, but they didn't seem necessary, however I am planning to make the next masks with them. I made a lot of the Olsen mask in the beginning, and they all have filter pockets similar to those you made by adding an extra piece in the inside. That also made it easy to add a nose wire pocket, I top stitched around the mask. Then I added and extra row of stitching, wide enough for the nose wire, the length of the filter pocket. This enables me to slide the wire in and then out for machine washing. I also want to mention that when I decided to buy nose wires, instead of making them myself, I got a lot of nose wires with a lot of elastic for a very low price. Keep up the great work.

    Some tips from me: 100% cotton breathes better, gets less sweaty, & can be boiled for hygiene. A layer of flannelette sewn inside makes a great filter, & can be washed/boiled. Pipecleaners (with the ends folded back a few millimetres) make great nose wires. A pocket sewn to each side, with a loop of elastic threaded through, means you can replace the elastic as it wears out, & change size/type of elastic with ease. This makes it really easy for folks receiving a mask as a gift to adjust it to their needs, too. Cheers.

    I am a mask junkie. I admit it. Pretty sure I have watched over 100 videos, altered at least 30-40 mask patterns, and made over 1000 masks. Most I have given away to family and friends. All of your tips are SPOT ON! Ironing is so important!!!! If you aren’t going to iron, just don’t sew. It’s the difference between a “home-made” product and a professional or finished product! If I can throw in one more tip, make sure you add notes to your patterns. Date them, add size and if you remember, add notes after wearing the mask regarding fit and changes you would make. I have boxes of masks that are cut out and not sewn because I changed mask style. Lol! My husband doesn’t question me anymore when buying more fabric or upgrades for the masks. Thanks for the information, especially the cnc info. Definitely would love hard templates! Cheers!

      Oh yes I have also watched so many different videos and there's only one Mask style that comes close to preventing fog on my glasses.( Not this one sad to say) But you really need to add in a 1/4 inch of soft foam is the best way I can describe it as well as the metal nose band, well I use coffee bag ties.
      So I'm going to be adapting one mask that a nurse made which was a 8x10 rectangle with the ties that go back behind the neck come up through the sides of the cheeks and then tie back behind your ears and modify that one to include the little extra piece of fabric that sits over your nose.
      By the time I perfect this the virus will be over 😁😂😂🤣🙃

    Tim I love stem too! Have the Teflon covers over my irons and the Teflon sheets so I can turn iron up a bit higher also. In a pinch, I use pony beads for the toggles. But you have to put one on with elastic straight and then put both ends through the second bead then sew elastic into mask. Another alternative for long lasting durable templates is to cut them out of the clear plastic cutting mats that Dollar Tree sells in their kitchen products or use one of their thick plastic placemats. You cannot print on any of these but I print on paper then put it underneath the clear mats and trace it with a permanent marker. On the placemats, you have to go ahead and cut out the paper template then trace around it then cut it out. I typically use a third layer of fabric inside my masks. I get the non-woven reusable shopping bags in solid colors and cut a layer of the non-woven fabric. I only cutout the center area of the mask template and when assembling just sew the non-woven just like the one you showed on the backside as a pocket. I try to cut that inside layer about 1/2”-3/4” away from where the elastic to help alleviate extra bulk on the ends. There are a number of seniors I make masks for and they would never put a filter in a pocket anyway, we all have enough trouble breathing without a mask!! Thanks for your info and templates. Think you are doing us all a great service by taking the time to share with all of us!!Thank you!!!

    Fantastic tips, Can I add one more? When I make my masks, and I admit I love your bat winged mask pattern, and make them with 3 fabrics, and flannel is the nice soft fabric I use inside by the face. Tip is cut lining, and inside piece 1/4 inch smaller, make them fit to sew together. The mask just lays nicer all around. Thanks for all your wonderful ideas.

    I use 2mm aluminium craft wire for my nose wires. I flatten the ends with pliers and then fold them in and press in place, so they aren't sharp. I had that wire at home already when I started making masks, and I've found that it holds up really well, none of them has broken over a year later. I don't run my masks through the washing machine, though, I hand wash them and then boil them in an old pot set aside for that purpose.
    Also, I find ear loops really uncomfortable so I use long upper and lower loops that go around the back of my head instead (or one long loop if you make channels for the elastic at the sides instead of sewing it on). It uses a bit more elastic but makes the mask so much more comfortable and secure, and I can use really narrow elastic in a colour that is close to my hair colour.

    Filter pockets take a little more fabric, but they allow you to put in a filter and I find them easier to sew on my old machine with my sub-par skills and clumsy fingers :)
    Those stick on nose wires break after very few washes I've found. I use garden wire, lasts a real long time and works well.
    Soft jersey elastic is the BUSINESS.
    Thanks for all the hard work and sharing Tim x

    Praise goddess for the jersey knit elastic! I have enough to last through the Rapture I think- one of the large rolls like you showed. I have a lifetime supply of t-shirt strips now too- if you cut them about 3/4" wide they really aren't any bulkier than the knit elastic when you stretch them to roll into a tube.

    Love your videos. I use plastic beads as my ear length toggle (just move the bead up/down as required). Also I use bias tape (or just an 1-side open ended) fabric channel on the top of the nose part, so I can remove the nose wire prior to washing.
    Also, I'm curious to know which masks of yours folks prefer the best so far :-)

    I seen a neat way to inlarge or make smaller take 2 pen or pencils and tape them together side by side then place one on the pattern and the other will follow a small way away trace around the original pattern if you need larger roll a piece of paper around one of the pencils before you tape or rubber band them together works I tried it

      Good tip! My brain tends to think in rotary cutter mode, so I prefer acrylic for that reason. But it’s a great idea for anyone looking to trace their pattern or use their rotary cutter more carefully than me.

    I've been sewing for about 40 years . . . never heard of the freezer paper trick until I watched your single strap mask vid. Mind blown. BUT - question - how many times can you reuse that pattern piece and get it to stick to the material by ironing? Is it a 1 trick pony? Can you use it a few times? Dozens of times? I don't own any freezer paper, but I'll invest in some if it makes reusable pattern.

    • @timothytotten9409
      @timothytotten9409  3 роки тому

      You can definitely use it several times. I don’t know how many, but could be 4 or more times, depending upon how light you are with your iron.

    Hi Tim, these are all great tips! I was looking for a new iron at the time I watched this. I purchased the same as the one you showed in this video, my question is, when it's hot, are you leaving it on the plastic base it comes with? Because it is oval, we can't out it down on one end. While sewing and going back and forth how are you resting the iron? Thanks sew much!

    • @timothytotten9409
      @timothytotten9409  4 роки тому

    thank you for the neat nose wire things. I did a lot of work with redcross and children and so the twist ties have always been an ENEMY. I forgot this years later making my first batch of masks and used the twist ties as per the instructions I received. NO NO ...the wire poked thru and cut my finger to blood , and I suddenly remembered the lifelong twist tie hate....and went back and corrected the people who told me to do the wrong thing. I bought for almost nothing, the better aluminum stick ons ...they work and last thru washings......And the new thing the wired lacing I WILL try that.....National Geographic has one this week...fold a toy boat and the pointy ends go at nose bridge and chin with the elastics at the not-point halfway mark. Done in ten minutes...with an earwire tucked into the fold over the nose bridge. YES we WIN! Thank thank. you!!
