    Boxing comes pretty natural to me, even though I'm old as dirt . When I first started training MMA, I was able to use it pretty well against other beginners. But I quickly learned that I had to modify my stance when facing guys who were more experienced. They would kick the shit out of my lead leg. I also had to be VERY careful with head movement due to walking into head kicks. But overall, I found that combining boxing and wrestling was the best foundation for me. Then I use BJJ as a supplement if I'm facing a good wrestler.

    Great video. Boxing is an incredibly limited fighting style in terms of what you can and can’t do but that only allows you to specialize deeper than ever. Take Joe Frazier for example as someone who pretty much just had a left hook, but it was arguably the greatest left hook of all time

  • @carlosgarita7094
    @carlosgarita7094 5 років тому +7

    Amazing as always.
    I heard a JJ teacher in another video in his channel (the guy is a Rickson Gracie Black Belt) giving his two cents about this dilemma in Jiu Jitsu of learning all these new-school sport-based techniques that come up every day. He said basically that you shouldn't waste your time by learning hundreds of techniques, but getting better at the fundamentals and that a white belt may know the same technique than a black belt, but the white belt will execute it at a white belt level, while the black belt will execute it at a black belt level.
    Also related to this, once someone asked Rickson G. what is the hardest belt to get promoted to, and he said the blue belt, cause in that belt (at least for his students, cause JJ has no official structure) "you know the whole game", but then you have to develop the timing and speed to apply them.
    So at the end it's not just about "knowing" a technique, or being exposed to it, but also the level of your ability to execute it, and that could only be developed with repetition and sparring, whether it's boxing or JJ.
    But completely agree with the concept exposed in this video.

My instructor stopped teaching,so I didn’t have a lot of techniques. 3 years of straight basics on my own,trying to figure out how to land them effectively, and sparring as much as possible. I was 13, now 52 and after earning a black belt in Kajukenbo, I still focus on the same things I started doing. Thank you for making it plain. Much love my brother

    Agreed that’s how I approach combinations and shadowboxing. It’s mostly from sparring and knowing problems I have and coming up with a way to deal with them. Then I work it in my shadowboxing and combinations and reassess in sparring. When I started doing that and taking things one at a time instead working on things without context my learning took off. I still have a lot to work on but this definitely helps. Everything you say is on point and very true. Respect.

    If you double jabbed right hook and shifted with it. So as you throw the right you turn southpaw. Could use it to set up heavy left hook. Intensity of Being interested in the subject is more important than the exact part of the subject being studied. Its necessary to do what you dont like often to grow past a certain Point. You are absolutely right in how your teaching. Just wanted to give some thoughts i had. Often i just do weird shadowboxing. New combos odd almost kung fu kata type stuff. Absolutely love it. Makes me so happy. I learn everytime one new combination I never thought. Thousands of times and got a new nugget. A better understanding of how to operate in a larger capacity. I have more options. I can choose from more. New footwork new step this punch plus this head movement. Not the most efficient training I'll admit. But I will train the longest from it. Get the most out of it. Albeit not coordinated in a method. I will have to go and fine tune missing sections etc. The amount of skill points acquired for me is so much higher than if i did it with the whole. Mirror with perfect form. I do try to not have excess movement move with a direct reason for the movement. That being said my favorite combination I have probably thrown under 5000 times. 125216. For the very reason its not very practical. Work that or a textbook combination. That being said I just decided to get my favorite combo to be something I perfect. Life's fun how you can get to the same destination 50 different ways.

I am now working on a book on the connection between self esteem and IQ. The study is based on multiple personality disorders where when one personality takes over the SAME BODY and BRAIN the IQ can change by as much as 10 points. I have been very interested in this since me and my two sisters tested in our 20s and scored far above the national average with both my sisters scoring in the top 2% at 137 and 142. The narrative of the martial arts is shaped by people who have very little knowledge on it. They talk the loudest. Very boring and a waste of my time. The videos will stay and I will have a website where people can contact me for combative material.

    • @TheUmmahFightCamp
      @TheUmmahFightCamp  5 років тому +3

      Battle Rifle: Cuts occur from a punch when you smash flesh against bone. If you picture throwing a rock into a small bucket of water, the rock is thrown with such force as to displace the water and the water separates. That is much like the skin splitting.

      Battle Rifle: As a side note: If you have been fighting for a while, the face is one big pain even if you have a good defense (the gloves still are against your face). Many times a particular part of your face is numb. Because of those two factors, you rarely feel the cut when it occurs. I have been cut 3 times, once in a street fight and 2 times in boxing matches. Did not know either had occurred until the warm flow got my attention. What hurt was the wind (if cold) blowing in it.

    • @TheUmmahFightCamp
      @TheUmmahFightCamp  5 років тому +4

      Noodle Boi: For some reason people keep assuming that I do not know what I am talking about. Although you will deny it, I have a feeling that it is because I am black since most white guys have no clue of what they are talking about and are followed. Brazil has the largest population of African people other than Africa so it is more odd that whites would talk about BJJ than Blacks actually. Of course again you will say it is not a color thing, but I have been on you tube for 8 years and people like you keep insulting me by thinking I do not know what I am saying. Now, Brown belt in Judo (earned in 1978!!!!!!!), High school first reserve wrestling 1975-76 , Starter 1977-79, Junior College (After being accepted to a Div 1 powerhouse only to mess that up by beating someone with brass knuckles who assaulted my sister) .

    • @TheUmmahFightCamp
      @TheUmmahFightCamp  5 років тому +5

      Noodle Boi: Now for my answer for ALL to see: First, Principles and concepts are NOT taught in most BJJ schools! That is why so many dvds are purchased by BJJ players. Next, if it was about Principles and concepts you people would stop at purple belt and roll to up your skills since it is by purple belt that the highest % submissions are taught. Instead you go on to earn black belt for nostalgia and nothing more. That is a fact. Principles and concepts are strengthened by rolling NOT learning more submissions that are useless and only impressive to your buddies. Don't believe me? I said 9 years this: ONLY about NINE submissions are seen in MMA! Still that is true. Perhaps you should ask ROGER GRACIE why only 24 techniques are used in BJJ self-defense when his school calls for close to 600 for black belt. It is all about marketing and mostly to whites who have the money to pay and want to think they are deadly. That is the truth.

    there are many different varations of the jab.. diff ways to throw an overhand. diff ways to throw a hook depending on if they are far or close.
    i can assure you someone who has been boxing for 1 year doesnt know how to throw the same punches as the pros you mentioned. Why ? because although there is only jab/right/2 hooks/ 2 uppercuts.. there are many diff variations of throwing them depending on the situation and thats one of the things that make a great boxer great.
    great vid though i agree with a lot of what you said.

    • @TheUmmahFightCamp
      @TheUmmahFightCamp  5 років тому +2

      Viral Central TV: Actually there is very little variation. UA-cam channels feel the need to show far more than is used because viewers need to be entertained. From Errol Spence to Canelo Alvarez, most high-level fighters are not throwing much in the way of variations. ANY gym that has at least 2 open class GG fighters will display virtually every variation used at the highest level of boxing. If a kid goes to the gym 3 days a week (and most go more if they are serious), they will see virtually all the punches used. I can look at most channels on youtube and social media and tell you that most of what they post pros would laugh at.
