It's interesting reflecting on that. I wouldn't call myself a hardcore fan... and yet, I've played every game in the series. No one game would come in my top 10 to 20 games of all time likely, and yet the series as a whole is definitely up there.
Why this is I'm not quite sure, but darn it is this series enjoyable :)

NDS is one of my most beloved game consoles, with Professor Layton being one of my favourite games on the platform. So I really enjoyed finding out more about how the game was created.
If there's one thing I thought was missing it's that the localized versions of the games did take away many of my favourite puzzles from the Japanese versions. Mostly puzzles with word solutions (where you write the answer in hiragana). It'd be cool to hear why though I guess the extra work to adapt to writing the answers in alphabet may not have been worth it cost- or timewise.
Other than that nitpick, great job on the video! I'll be checking out more of your work.

Thank God those changes were made for the european version 😫, I'm british and everything Nintendo of Europe said is 100% correct, one day I mistakenly bought an american copy of the game that had been sold second hand in a european case and I was so irritated by Luke's voice I had to return it and explain to them there's something wrong with the characters voice, little did I know, but had that of been my first experience with the game I don't think I would have wanted to pick it up again

I've just finished replaying the entire series, for the first time in years, to see if it was as good as I remembered it. I'm happy to say it was! My retrospective visit was both familiar and surprising for each game.
But Curious Village in particular: surprisingly, the most primitive Layton game holds up incredibly well still!, even when compared with the rest of the series! I genuinely concluded my revisit by saying "Curious Village is probably the best mobile/app store game ever made that WASN'T made for mobile devices"

I remember initially dismissing the Professor Layton series as more DS shovelware, back in 2010. I decided to give it a go when a demo was made available. Oh, how wrong I was. 8 years later and I'm an acolyte and strong defender for this series. Having played all 6 main games (currently on the 6th one, which was rather hard to find) and most of the spin-offs. It remains one of my favorite game series to date. A Nintendo console isn't complete without a Layton entry.

My grandmother actually introduced me to this series due to her love of puzzles. I love the prof layton games a lot. And surprisingly, so did my country, the Netherlands.
During the ds/wii era, getting a game dubbed to dutch was extremely rare, almost unheard of really, only for big AAA games or literal baby games. But because Layton sold so well in the Netherlands, all sequels got dubbed into Dutch. Which was honestly pretty great, since in the first game I had trouble with some puzzles simply cause of unknown english terns.

@@ThomasGameDocs On the flipside, I was a bit shocked to hear for the first time the British voice actors for the main characters. My parents had bought for me Eternal Diva (a really amazing animated film that's part of the Layton canon- have you seen it?), and the English dub involved only the voice actors for the UK version. So after getting surprised by Luke's drastically different voice, I researched and found out that the US version is just a fake cockney accent. Not sure why they hired Americans to voice British characters in the first place. Now I can't unhear the fakeness in US Luke, especially as I absorb more British media. Although, one criticism I have for the UK version is that Luke sounds far too young for his age, and frankly sounds too girlish.
That's interesting to hear that Emmy sounds just fine to British ears, even though it's the same voice actress. If she did get accent training later on, though, why didn't Luke's voice improve?

When I had gotten a used red one off of Ebay. And I remember going to Target. To get a game for it. And I remember as I was looking at the ds games there. I remember that one ds game. I remember seeing a commercial for it a few years before. But I couldn't remember the name of the game. But I did remember the one character in the game wore a top hat. And when I saw the game call Professor Layton. I remember that this was the game I saw the commercial for. And ever since getting that game. I have a huge love for those games ever since. Mainly because they are puzzle games. And I just love puzzle games. Now I have every single Professor Layton related game there is for my ds and 3ds. And it was just last month I bought the Curious Village game for my iPad. I so hope the other ones comes to the iPad. And July of last year I bought Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy for my iPad. I also have it for my 3ds as well. I also have that Ace attorney and Layton 3ds game. Haha, thank you so much! The thing about the Layton games is that they're like if someone took a puzzle book and combined it with like an animated movie or something. So if you like puzzle book type puzzles and stories, you'll like the Layton games, but if you don't, you won't. I'd definitely recommend giving one a try if you have someone you can borrow it from - that way, if you don't like it then it doesn't really matter. Anyway, long ramble over ;)

In Praise of Shadows The puzzles in the earlier games lean toward simple riddles, while later games will more often present mechanics you have to fiddle with. The stories are pretty good if you like to get invested in stuff--in later games the stakes get really high

The entire reason I purchased the first professor layton game is that it was set up in store as a demo. You basically solved the first puzzle of the series finding the curious village. I really liked how it felt to try and solve something and so I gave it a shot. Never looked back because this series is one of the greatest and has seriously changed my way of looking at the world.

I'm neither British nor American, but I think Luke's US voice doesn't sound bad at all. I mean, watching comparisons I see that it doesn't sound authentic, but I think for an American it was actually a good English accent (doing accents so different from yours requires incredibly amount of skill)
The UK voice sound more authentic and legit British, but I think it's too high-pitched and I slightly prefer the US voice since English isn't my native language anyway. But, yeah, now it seems kinda forced to me and the UK voice is really good, just wish her voice could be more like a teenager boy

Your first video and still one of my favorites. Professor Layton may not be one of the best series I've ever played but all the same, it's one I have an immense of fondness and nostalgia towards: the characters are endearing, the stories heartfelt, the soundtrack pleasantly rustic and of course, the puzzles are quite fun.
I'm so grateful this series turned out as it did and came out when it did, and thanks so much for making a video on it. PL has both a fascinating and dare I say feel-good or heartwarming development history. :)

Professor Layton is the best thing that ever came in my life, and funnily enough was the first ever game I played and finish on the Nintendo DS, (not pokemon apparently) and it's been my favorite game of all time. It was given to me by a family member that, and I quote, "Found it in the shop and thought you might like it." And I did, I did very much, Curious Village and Pandora's Box were my favorite games on the DS, then I got Specter's Call and Unwound Future (that I cried at quite a lot).
Fast forward 3 years later, I get a 3DS, and the first thing I ask for is Miracle Mask. Yes, it's my first game on the 3DS, and I absolutely love, then I got Azran Legacy which took me a while to finish mainly because I was not ready to end the whole series yet.
Then I went on to watch Eternal Diva and play Layton Brothers I think was for the android, then I got Layton's Mystery Journey aka Katrielle Layton, and it was fantastiic!
All in all, Professor Layton was an unforgettable journey, and I loved and enjoyed it all through out.

Oli_is_just_an_ign It was my first true video game I ever owned (since my parents accidentally bought lots of shovel ware) and the first game I finished. The series is still my favorite video game series ever and it’s characters are very near and dear to my heart. My parents bought me all the games and the movie which I still own and play today. Although, I’m always sad no one seems to know Layton in America anymore because he was my childhood hero growing up and such an important part of my life. I’m really hoping they dub the Katrielle Layton anime so we can bring Layton a little back to the West 😊

While I live in the UK and play the European versions of the games, I was aware of Luke's different voice in America because I had the American version of the second game on one of those multi game cards. After discovering Lani's voice in games such as Bendy and the Ink Machine, and also Showdown Bandit (RIP), I was very surprised to learn that she was Luke in the US! Now that I think about Luke's US voice and the one line that Showdown Bandit said, I can hear the similarities!
