Thank you so much! I just purchased these three products and now im figuring how i will be using it. Since im new to acids, im planing to use the lactic acid at night, probably every other day for the first week to avoid irritation.
Thank you so much for sharing this routine! I've just purchased a few of these items and i've been worried about how to use and layer them with one another. This video really helped a lot!
This was super helpful, thank you. I just bought some of these products and had no clue how to use them so it was really great to be able to sit down and do the routine with you whilst you explained everything in detail!
Thank you so much...your videos are so helpful since I bought the ordinary products 2months ago and I had no idea of the right way to use them..and now I do.. Thanks to you
And btw, i have a quick question 🙋🏻♀️ Is there any way i could squeeze in aloe vera in between those steps mentioned by u in this video? Im afraid i might layer it wrongly 😢
Yes, you can use The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors +HA at the end of your routine. However, it's generally not recommended to use a scrub in the same routine as the lactic acid. You could use the scrub on days when you're not using the lactic acid, but be careful not to overdo it with both treatments. Over time, it can irritate the skin, so it's important to find the right balance that works for your skin's needs.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet hey mellisa I also asked how many drops of lactic acid should I use and as a begginer towards chemical exfoliaters should start once a week then gradually building up can u explain this how will I gradually build
@@ComplexRoblox Yes, I know. However, you can use the same amount as everyone else. Usually, 5-8 drops are enough to blend the product evenly all over the face, and you can also apply it also to the neck if you want. Regarding frequency, you can start by using it 2-3 times a week for a couple of weeks, and if you tolerate it well, you can increase it to every other day or even daily, as needed.
Lactic Acid has a very thin, water-like texture, which means you may need to use a bit more. For thicker serums, you typically only need 3-5 drops, but you should use enough product to ensure even application all over.
Hey, could you help me out if this routine is okay? I'm now using at AM Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin as wells as Sunscreen, and a salicylic acid cleanser... At PM I'm using Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin and Lactic Acid 10%, as well a Salicylic Acid Cleanser. Ones per Week I'm switching between the AHA and BHA Exfoliant and Salicylic Acid Masque from the Ordinary. I hope you can answer me, I really appreciate your content! ☺️ Love ya! ❣️
Wow, you are using a lot of acids. I am a bit worried about over-exfoliating it. Mainly when you use this routine ongoing. It may be best to stick to a gentle cleanser but if you do not have any issues and you are happy do not change anything 🙂
You’re a life saver! Quick question if I do this routine at night with all 3 serums, would it be okay to use Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% by it self in the morning?
Thank you! Also last night I tried this routine but my moisturizer is the protini one from DE, I’m not sure if I can use that moisturizer with the lactic acid since it’s has peptide, do you know anything about that?
@@marcelalara6250 Hm, the ordinary says the following: Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids. Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people: It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid). In addition, we would recommend avoiding the use of products containing copper peptides in the same routine as strong antioxidants as well as direct acids/LAA/ELAA. I am not 100% sure if it will affect the products since I do not understand this. I assume that it depends on the formulation, and if you use other products, it may not cause any issues. However, to be safe, you have to ask a chemist. Or just avoid it and use it at alternate times. This way, you make sure to get all the benefits. :) That's how I like to do it since that way I do not have to worry. You cannot see it, and therefore it is nearly impossible to tell for the everyday user.
Thank you for this video, melissa! Can I use the lactic acid 10% once or twice a week even though I am a beginner to acids? I already bought the 10% without having seen this Video, so I am a little concerned now 🙈
Hi! I loved your video, and i would like to ask if i should use hyaluronic acid on days when i use lactic acid since its with HA as Well. I use also cleanser from CV that contains HA too. Thank you sm!
Hi melissa i just recently discovered your channel and im so glad i did..i have a question ,for my 14 yr daughter which products and routine would be good to follow to target small break outs and hyper pigmentation from the ance?
Hello :) Since the Ordinary Salicylic Acid Solution is out of stock, I recommend using Paula's Choice instead. You can use the Clear Cleanser and the Salicylic Acid Solution and Niacinamide. Paula's Choice Clear Cleanser The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Solution (Out of stock, so I recommend Paula's Choice 2% Salicylic Acid Solution) The Ordinary Niacinamide I don't think that you need to add more, maybe a sunscreen during the day. But SPF 30 is sufficient. Just look for one that does not clog pores. For example, the La Roche Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra-Light Fluid (But this is quite expensive). There may be better and cheaper options on the market ;) Also, I am not sure if a moisturizer is needed just try and see how it goes without. If it feels tight or dry, you may want to add one, just be careful that it's non-comedogenic. :)
I have a question, I just started Ordinary Lactic Acid, I used it once so far, earlier this week. There was some tingling but other than that no reaction or anything thankfully! Today I bought the Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% and I am wondering if I can use them together? Thank you so much for this great video! ❤ I am new to your channel and loving it.
Hello Monica, sadly you cannot use them together. Peptides do not like a low pH which the Lactic Acid has. So it would be best if you used them at alternate times. You could use Argireline Solution 10% in the morning and Lactic Acid in the evening.
Can I do this? AM: alpha arbutin, niacinamide, moisturizer, spf PM: lactic acid, alpha arbutin, vitamin c suspencion 23%, moisturizer Once a week: aha bha peeling solution, salicylic acid masque
Hey :) Yes, your AM and PM routines look great! If you are new to Lactic Acid and Vitamin C. You may want to use them at alternate days for a while before using them in the same routine to avoid skin irritation. However, this also depends on your skin tolerance. If you currently have no problem with your PM routine, then keep on using it like this. Please, make sure to not use Lactic Acid when using the Peeling Solution or the other mask :)
Thank you for making such an informative video. I recently purchased all three of them and was confused about layering them but you made it clear. However, I’ve been using SA cleanser for around 2 years now. Should I change my cleanser to go along with Lactic Acid? It suits me well :(
Hello Aisha :) it will work if you are used to it. Most people tend to incorporate all kinds of acids in the same routine and use them too often too quickly, and therefore they get irritation. If you do it mindfully, you will not come across any issues.
These are the exact 3 serums I have from the ordinary! I came to this video to make sure I'm layering right. I am using lactic acid for the first time tonight and I did it wrong 😂 I have a 10% benzoyl peroxide cleanser, do you know if using that would cancel out the effects of Lactic Acid? Thank you 🥰
You should be fine using you BP cleanser with Lactic Acid in the same routine. First of all, you wash the cleanser of and second, I use a BP cream myself that includes Lactic Acid in it as well :)
Hi love the vid just wanted to ask if I could use the cerave facial moisturising lotion in the morning at the end... it also includes sunscreen that’s why I’m asking
Hi again Melissa.. I just got Axis-Y Dark Spot Correcting serum in hope to fade my dark/red acne marks . Do you have any experience with this product before? I'm thinking of using it after TO lactic acid 5%. Do you think it's safe or will it be too much? Thanks in advance!
Hello Yankumi, I have had a look at the ingredients, and it does not conflict with Lactic Acid. So technically, you can use it. However, I haven't tried it, so I can't tell you if that's a great combination. You need to test it and see if you like it ;)
If you are new to acids, I recommend using the Lactic Acid 5%. Use it at first every other day (like 2-3 times per week) for a while and see how your skin responds before using it more often during the week. Use it only once per day.
Hi Melissa! Thank you very much for the video. Since Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% is not available now can I use the Ordinary Ascorbyl glucoside solution 12% in its place.
Hi Ms. Melissa! Can you use the Azelaic acid after the niacinamide in this routine? Or the ascorbic acid + alpha arbutin? which one is better? Thank you!
Have a look at this video below :) The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% What You Should and Should Not Mix - With Real Examples!: ua-cam.com/video/OOMMTumlWeo/v-deo.html Hope this helps :)
Ho Vanessa, and thank you for yours videos, which are very helpful! I have a question, for my pm routine, i am using the serie advanced night repair of Estée Lauder, It' s ok ti use with It the ordinarti acido lactic, or the retinol squalane serums?
Hey Melissa! great video! I want to start using argeriline 10% solution but not sure how yet! should I apply it am or pm? thanks to your recommendation I started using lactic acid x3 times a week and i'ts been good!. At nights I switch between lactic acid and ascorbyl solution 12% but not sure if argireline solution can be used with those.
Hello :) I haven't done a video on how to use the Argireline solution, yet. I am currently experimenting 😀 Here is what it says: "Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids. Hey thank you!🥰 yes that's fine, however, if you wish to incorporate multiple Vitamin C's, Retinoids, and/or Direct Acids into your skincare regimen, it's suggested using them on alternate evenings and waiting until your skin has adjusted to one before introducing another.
Hey :) Thank you! You can use Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin and your Retinol 0,2% in the same routine. However, if you are new to Retinol and Lactic Acid, I recommend alternating between them/do not use them in the same routine since it can lead to irritation in the beginning. You may be able to use Lactic Acid and Retinol in the same routine once your skin has adjust to them individually. Also, how often you can exfoliate your skin depends on your skin concerns and needs. Some people can use it daily whereas others prefer to use them only 2-3 times per week. Adjust it based on your needs. This is what a routine could look like: PM 1 Routine (2-3 per week): - Cleanse - Lactic Acid - Alpha Arbutin - Niacinamide - (Optional) Moisturiser PM 2 Routine (2-3 per week): - Cleanser - Alpha Arbutin - Niacinamide - Retinol - (Optional) Moisturiser PM 3 Routine (On days when using none of them): - Cleanser - Alpha Arbutin - Niacinamide - (Optional) Moisturiser
I am about to buy Hyaluronic Acid, Lactic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Niancinamide, and Alpha Arbutin but I’m unsure if that will be too much. I have problems with hyperpigmentation and pimples but no acne. I am more concerned with my hyperpigmentation since it usually leaves dark spots after my pimples disappear. Advice??
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet My skin is combination. Oily and dry. As for my spots, some are red when pimples appear and some are dark but after it just turns dark.
Hey Melissa!!! Thank you so much for this educational video! I use the simple moisturizer cleanser every night and then the alpha arbutin from the brand collistar and then I use the vitamin c cream from the ordinary but lactic acid I only use once a week because I find it strong I only use it on Sundays
Hello :) I am not sure if that was a question, but what Lactic Acid are you using, the 5% or 10%? And have you tried to combine it with the Vitamin C Suspension? Because that combination can be very intense.
@@aya2348 Ok! I recommend keeping Lactic Acid and Vitamin C Suspension in separate PM routines and alternate between them since when using them together is may lead to stinging or burning. So, when you use Lactic Acid in the evening, skip your Vitamin C and vice versa.
No, because the Mandelic Acid is an Anhydrous solution, it will be applied after the water-based serums (Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin) but before the oil.
Hello again, well yes. Or maybe just try this combination and see how it goes 🙂 Edit: Apply Hyaluronic Acid before Niacinamide, this tends to work a bit better based on my experience.
Hi!! I just started using ordinary lactic acid 5% and ordinary niacinamide. Since then I’m starting to notice some dryness around some part of the face.. should I continue using them or should I stop using the product? Please recommend me what to do
Are you sure that it is dryness or just flaky skin because of the cell turnover? Have you used any other acids before? If not, it's likely dead skin cells ;) So you can use a muslin cloth and swipe them gentle away. Or maybe a very gentle scrub :)
Hi mellisa. First of all, thanks for the great video. But can you answer me. Rn im battling with hyperpigmentation and darksport in my cheek. Its really bother me 😟. Im already buy this three product which is lactic acid, niacinamide n alpha arbutin. Can i use these three products daily? Or should use twice a week? I already use alpha arbutin n niacinamide before this but i guess i using in wrong way thats why it doesn’t work on me i guess. I hope you can answer me sooner 🙂. Tqsm in advance 🥰
What kind of hyperpigmentation do you have? Because it only helps if it is still on the skin surface. Also what skin type do you have? And you can use Lactic Acid along with the products you currently use. My advice would be to only use it 2-3 times a week in your evening skincare routine and adjust it accordingly. Since Lactic Acid is an exfoliate, it is best to be more careful during the first weeks. For example: AM: Your Favourite Cleanser Niacinamide Sunscreen. (Important since you already have hyperpigmentation, so you do not want to make it worse! Use one that is suitable for your skin type and needs) PM (2-3 times a week): Gentle Cleanser Lactic Acid (Suitable moisturizer for your skin needs) PM2 (when not using Lactic Acid) Cleanser Alpha Arbutin Moisturizer (Suitable for your skin needs) There are multiple options to do this, but my advice would be to keep it simple initially and gradually increase the frequency of lactic acid if needed.
Melissa Van Dijk my skin type is normal but sometimes it goes to combination. Rn im having scar that left darksport in my cheek which is PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). And currently im using cerave moisturizer and its help me a lot 🙂. But im still lacking using ingredient that can get rid my darksport (PIH). Btw you get me clear with your video n explaination. Tq so so so much for your reply and its an honour to me 💕🌷
@@ansharahman877 Yes, that isn't easy to target. Some dark spots just stay for a few months and go away on their own. But you are already using the right products. You can add nothing else except for a Vitamin C product or maybe retinol to increase cell turnover.
Hey , tysm for this video. All I have is a cleanser, a toner , lactic acid exfoliator and the alpha arbutin serum . So, my PM routine shld be to cleanse, tone, lactic acid and alpha arbutin ? Can I mosturize after that?
Yes, Christina is right; I may add that Niacinamide can be used with any other ingredient except pure forms of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). It can be used with AHA + BHA. AHA= Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid (mainly used there are some others which aren't famous ) BHA= Salicylic Acid General information: How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns. Some people do well exfoliating with AHA or BHA twice a day, whereas others find that once a day or every other day is a perfect balance. Test to see what works best for your skin.
Hello Melissa! I wanna use lactic acid + alpha arbutin + niacinamide. Is it okay to use tranexamic acid toner (Hada Labo brand) before lactic acid then La Roche Posay's Cicaplast Baume B5 after Niacinamide for additional moisturizer? Thank you! :)
Hello Hazel, The correct order would be: Clean face Pat dry with a clean towel Lactic acid Alpha arbutin Niacinamide La Roche Posay's Cicaplast Baume B5

Hey! Have a look at this video: The Best Products From The Ordinary For Dark Spots: ua-cam.com/video/3yHkL2b2I1k/v-deo.html Of course you can use Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid or Mandelic Acid as an exfoliant, but I recommend using it a lightening treatment as well :) - Mandelic Acid is a very gentle acid! :)
Yes, that is possible. Still, it is recommended to only use 3 serums per routine. And from my experience, it works best with only 2 ;) The Ordinary For Beginners: ua-cam.com/video/diaLVk_EsI4/v-deo.html
Hi Melissa! I’m new to skincare and want to use this routine. Could I use the 100% plant derived squalane instead of the moisturiser? I have acne-prone skin and dark spots. Thanks ❤️❤️
Hey! :) The Ordinary does not recommend using their Niacinamide with Ethylated Ascorbic Acid serum. So, use them in different routines. For example for the PM routine; Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin or Alpha Arbutin and Ethylated Ascorbic Acid and the one you do not use, use it on it own in the AM :)
In the PM. Can I do this? Lactic acid Alpha Arbutin Niacinamide Azelaic Acid ( on the affected areas only??? ) Moisturizer ( or i can skip moisturizer? ) thankk u! 💖
Hey :) Yes, you can do it like this! You don't have to use a moisturizer if you do not feel the need, and just use Azelaic Acid after the serums :) Azelaic acid can be applied all over the face or just as a spot treatment, that's fine too! :)
Hello, I am new to skin care and I am buying these 3 products do you recommend using all 3 of these products the same time for my night routine as a beginner? I have sensitive dry skin. Also where would I add my Melano Essence vitamin c Serum to my routine?
Hey :) If you have really sensitive skin, using Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid may not be the best since it may sting/burn on the skin. But this depends on the sensitivity of your skin. Mandelic Acid is gentler. If you are new to exfoliating acids (depends on which one you choose), you may want to use it only a few times per week and see how your skin tolerates it before using it more often to daily during the week :) The Ordinary does not recommend using Niacinamide and Vitamin C in the same routine. Therefore it's best to keep them separate.
Ah, okay so should I switch over to the mandelic acid instead? Because the lactic acid I was going to buy is 5% since my first time trying and i was going to use it for at least once or twice a week until my skin builds up to the tolerance. I have acne scars and hyperpigmentation that I’m trying to get rid of or fade 😭😭
@@lunareclipse9282 You can try it...I'm not sure how sensitive your skin is...so it may be fine for your skin, otherwise switch to Mandelic Acid. You may also want to check out the Azelaic Acid Suspension :)

@@lunareclipse9282 Correct! The order of application is right too! :) You may be able to use Mandelic Acid and Azelaic Acid in the same routine, but this depends on your skin. You can start using them at alternate nights for a while and maybe use them together in the near future :)
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet can i use aha exfoliator such as lactic acid to exfoliate my skin and to reduce my tiny bumps on my skin? Or should i use bha? btw my skin types is oily sensitive skin and i also have acne. I hope you can suggest me the right exfoliator for my skin :(
Usually, BHA exfoliating acids are recommended for oily acne-prone skin. AHAs like Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid can sting sensitive skin, but it can still be beneficial if it doesn't irritate the skin. This also depends on how your skin will respond to it and what other skincare products you use.
I've heard that your supposed to wait for the water based serum to go into your skin before applying the next product. If that's true, how long should I wait before applying the moisturizer or another serum?
Well, yes, but I think you do this automatically. Usually, there is a gab of 30-60second. But yeah see here: How Long to Wait Between The Ordinary Skincare Products? - With Little Demonstration: ua-cam.com/video/QwsuCpVH26k/v-deo.html
Can I use the lactic acid and aha abruptin at the same time at night? Then the next day not use them both, then after that day use them both? Or should I alternate between two? I have dry skin but a little bit of oily skin around my forehead and sensitive skin.
You can use Alpha Arbutin daily in the AM and/or PM and use your Lactic Acid in your PM routine. You can use Lactic Acid and Alpha Arbutin in the evening together. However, adjust the frequency of Lactic Acid.
Hye, ur video is very help me as a newbies using ordinary product lolll... Actuall im very afraid use ordinary product but i want to remove dark spot and pores on my face.. if you dont mind can you share what product that suitable for my face to remove dark spot and pores on my face? BTW thankss for this helpfullll vid
You cannot remove the pores on your face. That only works online when using a filter ;) If they are enlarged, you can reduce their size by using a Salicylic Acid product, Niacinamide or a Retinoid. My suggestion would be The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser for AM followed by Niacinamide and sunscreen(if exposed to the sun) and a Retinoid/Retinol for the evening. However, the Ordinary Retinol formulations are very oily, so I suggest using another Brand, for example, Geek and Gorgeous 0,05% Retinal. AM: The Inkey List SA cleanser The Ordinary Niacinamide (optional moisturizer suitable for your skin type) (SPF if exposed to the sun) PM: Gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type Geek and Gorgeous Retinal 0,05% Frequency Retinal: Begin with 2-3 times per week. Increase as skin builds tolerance to every other day or daily as needed (and if tolerated).
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanksss a Lott for this suggestion 😍 actually at my face have light pigmentation..is it suitable to use ordinary alpha arbutin?
Retinal/Retinol and Niacinamide can potentially help you to lighten your light pigmentation as well. However, yes you could add Alpha Arbutin to your routine too :)
Yes, you can use it every day. And yes, you can use BHA with Niacinamide. There is no issue. How to Layer Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide Serum: ua-cam.com/video/LC74C2hG18g/v-deo.html
Those shouldn’t be an issue (not like Exfoliating Acids, Vitamin C or Retinol). Still, I can not guarantee how your skin is going to respond to it. You have to test it.
Hi Melissa I use corx salicylic cleansers, ordinary lactic acid once a week, witch Hazel rose petal tonner, Niacinamide 10 % zinc 1% and ordinary factors moisturizer. Is this ok
Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation for newbies like me! I wanted to introduce the ordinary buffet +copper serum in my routine. I will be cleansing , exfoliating with lactic acid and using the niacinamide and NMF in my pm routine (until the bit C derivative is back in stock).. Where does the buffet+copper fits? Thank you!
Please be aware of the Ordinary “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% conflicts...which are: Products containing Direct Acids, Pure Vitamin C (LAA/ELAA) and Strong Antioxidants. I do not recommend using “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% in the same routine than Lactic Acid as this is an Direct Acid. I recommend using “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% in the AM😊
Hi Melissa.. completely new to routine... I hv few products can u help me in layering it? I have ordinary lactic acid , retinol .5 ,caffeine, alpha arbutin, peeling solution..vitamin c suspension.. fenty night cream and pixi tonic and a cleanser. "few products" 😅 You have the whole line 😜 An example routine could look like this: AM: Cleanser Caffeine Solution Alpha Arbutin (Optional Moisturizer example The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors) (SPF if exposed to the sun) PM1 (2-3 Times a week): Cleanser Caffeine Solution Retinol 0,5% in Squalane (Optional Moisturizer example The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors) PM2: Cleanser Lactic Acid Fenty night cream PM3: Cleanser Pixi Tonic Fenty night cream PM4: Cleanser (Optional Moisturizer example The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors) Vitamin C 30% Suspension (PM Once every two weeks or less often, adjust to your needs) Cleanser Wait 5 minutes for skin to dry AHA+BHA Peeling Solution Your Moisturizer Since you have so many acids and high strength products, you need to split them into so many different routines as otherwise, you will over-exfoliate the skin at some point, leading to stinging and/or burns on your skin. I also recommend watching the following video: The Ordinary For Beginners: ua-cam.com/video/diaLVk_EsI4/v-deo.html
Hello, I'm thinking about using Cerevae's benzoyal peroxide as a cleanser and also incorporating the ordinary's lactic acid and alpha arbutin is that good?
I wouldn't use the lactic acid when using the Benzoyl peroxide cleanser. So my recommendation would be to use them on different days. Alpha Arbutin shouldn't be a problem.
Hello Melissa it's me again! Would like to ask smthing, i have a toner (dear klairs supple prep toner) i use it everyday. I would like to incorporate with glycolic acid and i would like to use it twice a week. If i use them both on the same routine, which should come first? My toner (dear klairs) or my exfoliator (glycolic acid)?? Thank you very much!!
Hello Juliana :) It is applied before Glycolic Acid. The toner helps to replenish the skin; it gives the skin the ingredients that the cleanser took away so that the exfoliant won't be as harsh.
Is there any products i can use instead of paula choice vitamin C to switch with Alpha Arbutin 30ml? Or could i just use Lactic Acid 10% 30ml, moisturizing and spf?
Yes, you can also try other Vitamin C products from The Ordinary. I just don't like them so much that's why I do not really recommend them. But technically you can use any you like 🙂

Hey Melissa, I just recently found your channel after purchasing some products from the ordinary and would be grateful for some help with a routine as I’m still very confused. I’ve combination skin and acne. I use a cleanser from lush (herbalism cleanser) and I’ve noticed it’s softening my face it is helping a little with my cystic acne but I still get a lot. After washing my face a couple hours in my skin will start to look dirty again cause of the blackheads all around it that won’t come out. The products I bought are: Hyaluronic acid Niacinamide AHA BHA peeking solution And the salicylic acid masque ( the bottle was being improved) Could you help me set up a routine pls? 🙏
I am not sure if this cleanser is the best option. I recommend using a cleanser with Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid, lactic acid, and Salicylic Acid. For example, the SkinCeuticals LHA Cleanser. (It’s a bit pricey but extremely effective against acne) And have you tried benzoyl peroxide? I recommend using a low strength in combination with the ingredients that you already have. A routine could look like this: AM: Skinceuticals LHA Cleanser Hyaurlonic Acid Niacinamide Benzoyl Peroxide cream (2,5 -5%, for example, Paula’s Choice CLEAR Regular Strength Daily Skin-Clearing Treatment with 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide) SPF PM: Skinceuticals LHA Cleanser Granactive Retinoid 2% in Emulsion PM (Once a week) with the mask, for example, Monday: Gentle Cleanser AHA + BHA Mask Hyaluronic Acid Niacinamide (Optional Moisturizer) PM (Once a week) with the mask, for example, Thursday: Gentle Cleanser Salicylic Acid Mask Benzoyl Peroxide (Optional Moisturizer) If you use Benzoyl Peroxide, you only need to apply it to the acne areas, and there is no need to apply it all over the face. Also, there is no need to add all this stuff; you just can try it with the products that you currently have at home. See what results you can achieve and adjust the products based on that :) Some General Information: The general rule of thumb for order of application is: 1. Water-based serums 2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations 3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions Important: If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing. It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration. About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck. Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing." Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!! Some products can have a foaming effect upon application depending on the other products you are using in your regimen. The foaming should not last longer than a few seconds and both should not remain sticky once absorbed into the skin. (Video: ua-cam.com/video/r04W7rQV1R0/v-deo.html) "Pilling" (snakeskin, shedding) can occur due to too much product. Your skin can only absorb a certain amount of product, and any excess will be left on top of the skin so that when the next product is being applied, it rubs off. (Video: ua-cam.com/video/l_C7HtO826A/v-deo.html) If you wish to incorporate multiple Vitamin C's, Retinoids, and/or Direct Acids into your skincare regimen, it's suggested using them on alternate evenings and waiting until your skin has adjusted to one before introducing another. Hello Aisha, the reason for the raving is because they are getting paid to do it. But not because it is so good and you need it. ;) However, if you want to use it, you would apply it after lactic acid. But it may be a bit too much for this routine. So, you need to test it if it still feels comfortable when doing so.

So, you want to use the exact routine as shown in the video with Lactic Acid + adding Azelaic Acid? Yes, that's fine. However, in the beginning, I recommend using Azelaic Acid and Lactic Acid on alternate days so that your skin can get used to it before using them together. Also, always check your skin and see how it reacts to the different products and adjust the routine based on what works and what doesn't!😊

For more information on how to do a test patch, please visit our Patch Test Guide on The Ordinary website. Order of Application - We suggest using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration. When pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid any skincare products containing retinoids such as formulations with Granactive Retinoid or Retinol.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet No I was just about to use lactic acid 5% and alpha arbutin. So you prefer using a mandelic acid in a sensitive skin? Btw my cleanser has a lactic acid listed on its ingredients so is there any conflict if I use mandelic acid?
Mandelic Acid has the largest molecules, which means that it penetrates slower into the skin and works better for sensitive skin types. But Lactic Acid can also work well. But so that you know it in case you feel sensitivity, use Mandelic Acid. If Lactic Acid is in the middle or, let's say, one of the last ingredients, it isn't a reason for concerns since then; it is only used to balance the pH of the formulation. And it does not exfoliate the skin.
Hi thanks for your video! My friend just gave me a bottle of Matrixyl 10% + HA, may i ask how do i include this in the routine? Can i apply it before the step 6?
Matrixyl 10% + HA is a water-based serum which has conflicts with pure Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and exfoliating acids like AHA (Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic Acid) or BHA (Salicylic Acid). The general rule of thumb for order of application is: 1. Water-based serums 2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations 3. I cannot tell you if your skin can tolerate daily use of Lactic Acid. But most people can exfoliate once a day. However, it depends on your skin type and skin needs. When using it for the first time, use it every other day in the beginning and see how your skin responds to it. If everything is fine and feels good, it can be applied daily. Mellisa can I use the ordinary moisturizer at end and also mellisa when using lactic acid can I use another exfoliater like scrub or not
Yes, you can use The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors +HA at the end of your routine.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 5 8 drops isn't isn't alot bcz usually we use 3 drops for other water based serums
Lactic Acid has a very thin, water-like texture, which means you may need to use a bit more. For thicker serums, you typically only need 3-5 drops, but you should use enough product to ensure even application all over.
Thanks Melissa, you’re a life saver

You’re a life saver! Quick question if I do this routine at night with all 3 serums, would it be okay to use Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% by it self in the morning?
Yes, of course. If it does not absorb well try to mix it with a bit of moisturizer ;)
Thank you! Also last night I tried this routine but my moisturizer is the protini one from DE, I’m not sure if I can use that moisturizer with the lactic acid since it’s has peptide, do you know anything about that?
@@marcelalara6250 Hm, the ordinary says the following:
Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids.
Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people:
It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid).

Paula's Choice Clear Cleanser
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Solution (Out of stock, so I recommend Paula's Choice 2% Salicylic Acid Solution)
The Ordinary Niacinamide
I don't think that you need to add more, maybe a sunscreen during the day. But SPF 30 is sufficient. Just look for one that does not clog pores. For example, the La Roche Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra-Light Fluid (But this is quite expensive). There may be better and cheaper options on the market ;)
Also, I am not sure if a moisturizer is needed just try and see how it goes without.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thank you so much.
Can I do this?

Hey :)
Yes, your AM and PM routines look great!

Hiiii.. Thank you for explaining in detail.
Can I use retinol 0.2% together with these three product alpha arbutin, niacinamide and lactic acid 5% ??
Hey :)
Thank you!
This is what a routine could look like:
PM 1 Routine (2-3 per week):
- Cleanse
- Lactic Acid
- Alpha Arbutin
- Niacinamide
- (Optional) Moisturiser
PM 2 Routine (2-3 per week):
- Cleanser
- Alpha Arbutin
- Niacinamide
- Retinol
- (Optional) Moisturiser
PM 3 Routine (On days when using none of them):
- Cleanser
- Alpha Arbutin
- Niacinamide
- (Optional) Moisturiser

For example:
AM:
Your Favourite Cleanser
Niacinamide
Sunscreen. (Important since you already have hyperpigmentation, so you do not want to make it worse! Use one that is suitable for your skin type and needs)
PM (2-3 times a week):
Gentle Cleanser
Lactic Acid
(Suitable moisturizer for your skin needs)
PM2 (when not using Lactic Acid)
Cleanser
Alpha Arbutin
Moisturizer (Suitable for your skin needs)
There are multiple options to do this, but my advice would be to keep it simple initially and gradually increase the frequency of lactic acid if needed.
Melissa Van Dijk yeah maybe i should wait in a few month to see its works on me. I get it now :). Thanks in advance!!
Hey , tysm for this video. All I have is a cleanser, a toner , lactic acid exfoliator and the alpha arbutin serum . So, my PM routine shld be to cleanse, tone, lactic acid and alpha arbutin ? Can I mosturize after that?
what toner are you using?
Hi love your video's! Question: Can I use a facewash with salicylic acid in it and then apply niacinamide after drying my face? Thank you!
Yes
@@christinaobert5664 thanks!
Yes, Christina is right; I may add that Niacinamide can be used with any other ingredient except pure forms of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid).
It can be used with AHA + BHA.
AHA= Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid (mainly used there are some others which aren't famous )
BHA= Salicylic Acid
General information:
How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns. Some people do well exfoliating with AHA or BHA twice a day, whereas others find that once a day or every other day is a perfect balance. Test to see what works best for your skin.

Hello, I am new to skin care and I am buying these 3 products do you recommend using all 3 of these products the same time for my night routine as a beginner? I have sensitive dry skin. Also where would I add my Melano Essence vitamin c Serum to my routine?
Hey :)
If you have really sensitive skin, using Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid may not be the best since it may sting/burn on the skin. But this depends on the sensitivity of your skin. Mandelic Acid is gentler.
If you are new to exfoliating acids (depends on which one you choose), you may want to use it only a few times per week and see how your skin tolerates it before using it more often to daily during the week :)
The Ordinary does not recommend using Niacinamide and Vitamin C in the same routine.

But yeah see here:

BTW thankss for this helpfullll vid
You cannot remove the pores on your face. That only works online when using a filter ;)
If they are enlarged, you can reduce their size by using a Salicylic Acid product, Niacinamide or a Retinoid.
AM:
The Inkey List SA cleanser
The Ordinary Niacinamide
(optional moisturizer suitable for your skin type)
(SPF if exposed to the sun)
PM:
Gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type
Geek and Gorgeous Retinal 0,05%
Frequency Retinal: Begin with 2-3 times per week.
Is it safe to use Alpha Arbutin everyday? Is Niacinamide also safe to use with BHA?
Yes, you can use it every day. And yes, you can use BHA with Niacinamide. There is no issue.

Vitamin C 30% Suspension
(PM Once every two weeks or less often, adjust to your needs)

Hello Grazi,
Yes, you can. But apply Alpha Arbutin before the Retinoid.
The products I bought are:
Hyaluronic acid
Niacinamide
AHA BHA peeking solution
And the salicylic acid masque ( the bottle was being improved)
Could you help me set up a routine pls? 🙏
I am not sure if this cleanser is the best option. I recommend using a cleanser with Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid, lactic acid, and Salicylic Acid. For example, the SkinCeuticals LHA Cleanser. (It’s a bit pricey but extremely effective against acne)
And have you tried benzoyl peroxide? I recommend using a low strength in combination with the ingredients that you already have.
A routine could look like this:
AM:
Skinceuticals LHA Cleanser
Hyaurlonic Acid
Niacinamide
Benzoyl Peroxide cream (2,5 -5%, for example, Paula’s Choice CLEAR Regular Strength Daily Skin-Clearing Treatment with 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide)
SPF
PM:
Skinceuticals LHA Cleanser
Granactive Retinoid 2% in Emulsion
PM (Once a week) with the mask, for example, Monday:
Gentle Cleanser
AHA + BHA Mask
Hyaluronic Acid
Niacinamide
(Optional Moisturizer)
PM (Once a week) with the mask, for example, Thursday:
Gentle Cleanser
Salicylic Acid Mask
Benzoyl Peroxide
(Optional Moisturizer)
If you use Benzoyl Peroxide, you only need to apply it to the acne areas, and there is no need to apply it all over the face.
Also, there is no need to add all this stuff; you just can try it with the products that you currently have at home. See what results you can achieve and adjust the products based on that :)
Some General Information:
The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
1. Water-based serums
2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing."
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
Some products can have a foaming effect upon application depending on the other products you are using in your regimen. The foaming should not last longer than a few seconds and both should not remain sticky once absorbed into the skin. (Video: ua-cam.com/video/r04W7rQV1R0/v-deo.html)
"Pilling" (snakeskin, shedding) can occur due to too much product. Your skin can only absorb a certain amount of product, and any excess will be left on top of the skin so that when the next product is being applied, it rubs off. (Video: ua-cam.com/video/l_C7HtO826A/v-deo.html)
If you wish to incorporate multiple Vitamin C's, Retinoids, and/or Direct Acids into your skincare regimen, it's suggested using them on alternate evenings and waiting until your skin has adjusted to one before introducing another.
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% cannot be used alongside any pure or ethylated forms of Vitamin C.
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% can only be used alongside Vitamin C derivatives:
- Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F
- Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%

Patch testing - We recommend avoiding unprotected solar exposure, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin. For more information on how to do a test patch, please visit our Patch Test Guide on The Ordinary website.
Order of Application - We suggest using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
Generally, we recommend applying water-based solutions first, followed by oil formulations, and finally cream/suspension formulas. If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Acne - Just as a note - none of our products can be considered medical treatments for acne, so we suggest consulting with your physician to see what may work best for your skin. :-)
Pregnancy - While each ingredient has been tested and is considered safe for topical application, DECIEM products have not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding people. When pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid any skincare products containing retinoids such as formulations with Granactive Retinoid or Retinol.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet yeah I added an entire dropper 😂😂😂😂🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ thank you for this!!
@@saraalyammahi8304 oh wow lol, how did you do that 🤔? But that might have been the issue 😉
Hi! How many times a week should I use lactic acid in sensitive skin? Thank You
It's not great for sensitive skin. Have you already tested it? 🤔 Generally Mandelic Acid is more suitable for sensitive skin.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet oh wow thank you but can I use madelic acid or lactic acid 5% everyday or 2 - 3 a week only?
@@kyokamoon1 Yes, that's fine! :)
Hi thanks for your video! My friend just gave me a bottle of Matrixyl 10% + HA, may i ask how do i include this in the routine? Can i apply it before the step 6?
Ohh sorry how about the sunscreen? How do i include it in the routine as well? Thanks!!
Matrixyl 10% + HA is a water-based serum which has conflicts with pure Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and exfoliating acids like AHA (Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic Acid) or BHA (Salicylic Acid).
The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
1. Water-based serums
2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing."
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thanks for your reply! I want to follow this routine so I already bought the latic acid, alpha arbutin and niacinamide. So if i want to include the matrixyl into this routine, it will be replacing the latic acid?
Yes that would be one way to do it. :)
Hi! Can you use only lactic acid and alpha arbutin together? If it can, then should it only be one/two times a week since lactic acid is an exfoliator? I'm planning to use the alpha arbutin daily at night but can you advice to apply the lactic acid daily too?
I cannot tell you if your skin can tolerate daily use of Lactic Acid. But most people can exfoliate once a day. However, it depends on your skin type and skin needs.
When using it for the first time, use it every other day in the beginning and see how your skin responds to it. If everything is fine and feels good, it can be applied daily.
And yes, you are OK to use them in the same routine as I showed in the video :)

hi! can you help me figure out if i am ordering my products correctly? here is my routine in order of what i do. can you let me know if this is okay and if not, what should be moved around and also if i am using them the correct time of day?(am or pm?)
am:
water/ micellar water
TO caffeine solution
TO hyaluronic acid
TO alpha arbutin 2% + HA
TO niacinamide
TO natural moisturizing factors moisturizer
SPF
pm:
cerave foaming face wash
TO glycolic acid 7% toning solution (every other day)
TO lactic acid 10% (when not using glycolic acid)
TO caffeine solution
TO alpha arbutin 2% + HA
TO natural moisturizing factors moisturizer
thursday: dermalogica thermafoliant instead of glycolic acid 7% toning solution
sunday: TO aha 30% + bha 2% peeling solution instead of glycolic acid 7% toning solution
Hey :), Well, the Ordinary recommends not using more than 3 serum formulations on one routine. However, I also use the caffeine solution and do not count it as a "1" serum anymore, since it's only be applied under the eyes. So from my perspective, the routine is perfect! 😀
