This clip randomly turned up in my feed. I didn’t know it existed and I was stunned when I realised that I was the air traffic controller on duty when it declared the emergency. It had not long reached top of climb and was around 200nm NW of Perth (YPPH). Luckily, it was still on radar and in VHF coverage. The aircraft was immediately cleared to turn as required and track directly to Perth. Despite handing off most other aircraft to alternate frequencies, the incident played out in a calm and generally uneventful manner from the perspective of anyone listening to the radio transmissions. We had little knowledge of the fear on board the aircraft. Kudos to the flight crew for getting the aircraft safely back on the ground. Personally, if I was a passenger on board the flight, I’d have been mightily unimpressed at the suggestion to pray. Not only does it give the appearance of the flight crew being distracted from the task at hand, the announcement would have increased anxiety levels in the cabin off the charts, which had the potential to do far more damage than good.

If I was the pilot, I would've picked up the com and addressed the passengers, "This is your pilot speaking. Would the lady with the vibrator please turn it off? Thank you."
@Samuel Jesse Jonah the pilot probably did shut down the engine, the reason the plane would vibrate so much is because even if the engine is shut down the fan blades still spin, and in this particular case one of the fan blades was missing causing vibration of the airframe.
How unprofessional is it to tell you passengers that their survival depends on THEIR OWN cooperation? Some years ago I was travelling by air from Karachi to Islamabad. A a very kind Zorastrian lady was sitting next to me. The plane got turbulent and the condition stayed that way for quite some time. Everybody felt so scared. The lady said to me, "I am praying to my God, you should pray to yours."
I don’t blame the pilot because he did a stellar job and was being human here, but if I were on that plane, I’d want to hear “We will be okay, even if we have to land on the water. The Coast Guard is down there, but we should make it anyway. Please do pray.” Again, he was just being human and honest, and I love him for that! Baruch Hashem!
It's the belief in an invisible Skydaddy whilst piloting a machine built upon Newtonian physics and modern science and avionics that terrifies me the most. He's controlling the fate of hundreds of human lives with technology based strictly on evidence-based cause and effect and deterministic physics, but when it comes to a basic modus operandi of existence, he believes in an anthropomorphic Iron Age deity that lives in the clouds and omnisciently determines outcomes. Pilot did a good job landing the plane, a much less stellar job inspiring any confidence whatsoever on the rational minds on board that plane. Terrifying.

Whenever i fly on a plane i pray. Knowing it could be a one way trip if im not lucky. Im not a very religious man but there is something calming whenever i pray.
To everyone saying the pilot was unprofessionel: in a situation like this it is best to tell people the truth about the situation, allowing them to have their last prayers. Imagine not knowing until the last second that you die, not being able to say goodbye. I think it was very honest of the pilot, who is a human being as well and allowed to be scared!
Your argument is not actually fitting with human nature. When a loved one is on their death bed, or is likely not to survive, do you want to see the nurses/doctors cry or do you actually appreciate their ability to be detached? In a situation like this video, the fear of death is going to be in everyone's mind. You don't need the one person who seemingly has control over their fate confirming their fears. All that will do to the human mind is put it in a worse state than it already is and possibly make an already bad situation far more dangerous for everyone.
