- India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been doing some stellar work in developing missiles of different ranges and potency for decades. Despite getting involved in some of the Covid-19 mitigation related work in 2020-21, DRDO has continued to keep pace in developing and testing some new systems as Chairman Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy tells Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in this exclusive interview.

Thank God that the MTech DRDO graduates will not be able to go to the US on a H1B visa and work there instead of in India since US defence industry (both govt. and private) does not hire non-US citizens.

As our drdo chief always makes it clear that India has become really strong in area of missile technololgy, radars, sonars, electronic warfare systems, communications and guns. We can make great nuclear aubmarines. India is neck deep in building 5.5 generation fighter jet. Tejas our 4.5 generation jet will be precured by indian airforce with a deal worth over 4.5 billion dollars at aero india 2021. Wingman drones swarm drones unmanned combat ariel vehicles are all projects that are being developed on a mission basis.
Drdo has already developed high powered micro wave and laser weapons. One such weapon wss deployed during trumps visit to India.
Drdo has developed Anti drone systems that can nutralise swarm drones. During republic day parade this year drdo deployed this anti drone system.
Galium nitride foundary has been established in telengana by drdo.
Modi came to power. He asked drdo to create young scientists laboratories where all scientists will be below age of 35. Drdo established 5 young scientist laboratory working in really advanced futuristic technologies namely cognitive technologies, asymmetric technologies, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence and smart materials.
It's effect was seen almost immediately. Last year drdo shocked the world by sucesfully demonstrating quantum communication. The work being done at DRDO will be used to enable start-ups and SMEs in the domain of quantum information technologies.
isro has sucessfully demonstrated free space quantum communication.. after drdo now isro makes a monumental breakthrough in quantum communication. I have no doubt in proudly saying today India is second to none in quantum communication.
On army day this year India showcased to the workd its swarm drone technology. These drones are all self aware. one drone does not follow the other drone. each drone have the ability to take their own decisions based on threat. It uses adaptive artificial intelligence, edge computing, network centric approach, satellite based technologies, remote sensing many advance sensors image processing etc really complex stuff thar even I cannot explain. Armed forces will never show true capabilities of such state of the art disruptive ai based technologies. ..
Also this year idea forge an Indian company won the contract to supply its swift dtones to indian armed forces. This drone is just marvel of technology. Such a tiny drone with very good endurance and equipped with state of the art surveillance gathering capabilities. Very smart artificial intelligence is built into this drone. We will not know it's true capabilities due to security reasons. The ceo of idea forge is from one of indian institute of technology. He built his first drone when he was doing his engeering. Infosys has invested heavily in idea forge. Like the Ceo says this drone is built like a bird and tested like a tank. These chiense drones cannot compete in any way shape or form with swift drone built by idea forge. Idea forge beat many foreign drone companies from america Israel to win this contract. It out performed all of them.
Another indian company called addverb technologies does factory and wearhouse automation using ai for many companies. Their clients include giants like Coca cola Pepsi flipkart amazon etc. This company basically makes robots from robots.
Last year drdo successfully test fired scram jet powered hypersonic vehicle. In this very complex propulsion system the hypersonic wind that comes into the combustion chamber has to be burnt with the fuel at supersonic speeds. Most of the time flame gets extinguished. Now drdo has succeed in developing. It is a major breakthrough in propulsion technology, aero dynamics technology and a major breakthrough in technology of materials. As hypersonic vehicle travels the temperature reaches as high as 1500 degree Celsius on the skin of the hypersonic vehicle. To sustain such temperatures drdo had to develop materials like carbon carbon silicon carbide and other wide variety of super alloys and other things who's information is not available in public domain. In order to craft such futuristic hypersonic vehicle you need very complex machinary and very highly skilled man power. I think india is leading the world in hypersonic technology thanks to drdo. Plus all the complex electronics guidance and navigation systems have to be especially developed for a hypersonic vehicle. As u cannot copy and paste these things from a supersonic cruise missile.
India will soon give nightmares to chiense with its fighter jets as well. Our Tejas is a state of the art 4.5 generation fighter jet.
Russian technology is way behind tejas in terms of technology. Plus russian technology is third grade but cheap and requires constant maintanance and replacement of parts which is very expensive in the long run. While Chiense weapons are nothing more than expensive paper weights. Only good for show off purposes.
One example in any russian jet if a pilot completes air to air mission and wants to switch to air to ground role the pilot has to manually configure the fighter jet for air to ground role. It not only takes a lot of time but it makes pilot vunrable to enemy attack.
But in tejas as soon as pilot completes air to air mission and wants to switch to air to ground role. Tejas automatically understands it. And autonomously configures the fighter jet for air to ground role on the fly within no time at all. No pilot intervention is required.
All russian jet India uses is heavily modified by drdo. Sukhoi that russia uses compared to sukhoi that India uses cannot be compared.
But it's not just the fighter jet. What makes Indian air force very potent is due to the state of the art network centric capabilities it has built over the years.
During aero india keynote address this year our air chief gave a detailed explanation of above mentioned capabilities. Our air chief said "Today thanks to drdo iaf has integrated all sensors, radars, aewcs, air defense system, aesa platforms into a network system called the integrated air command and control system. Thanks to which iaf has seemless air space surveillance across entire air space. India has built a potent network centric capabilities.
Moreover indian companies have developed for iaf electronics maintanance management system which has become world largest such system deployed against many types of platforms and equipment across indian air force. And entire system is completely automated."
Many types of artificial intelligence capabilities have been developed by drdo for iaf and is being extensively used.
Without the above capabilities no matter what fighter jet u buy or build indigenously it will never give u results in future warfare. It's like having match stick without a match box.

As far as 5th gen fighter jet is concerned.
Indian amca which will be a 5.5 gen fighter jet will be a game changer for Indian airforce.
In early 1990's tejas state of the art flight control systems and flight control laws were being tested by an f16 pilot. And the pilot was so impressed by the flight control laws that he said that f16 would fly even better with tejas flight control. But unfortunately America imposed economic sanctions and technology denial regimes on India. And the corporation between the two countries came to an end.

And this is a video of indigenously developed state of the art supersonic trainer jet for Indian airforce called the sport. This trainer jet can train a pilot to handle any type of fighter jet available with Indian airforce. It can train pilots how to handle electronic warfare system, beyond visual range missiles, cruise missile, aesa radars, helmet mounted displays swarm drones etc it's cockpit and controls are similar to f35.

Very timely interview!! DRDO has done a great job during pandemic times and it deserves all the praise. It must however be said that some simple things like good quality masks are not available in the market and almost everyone uses blue colored surgical masks or some untested N95 labelled masks. DRDO must do something in this basic requirement and help the country avoid next wave!
DRDO has been doing very commendable job particularly in last few years under its chief, Dr. Satish and results are there for all of us to see. Of course, DRDO has a lot more to do and it must cater to all the needs of our Armed Forces as we go ahead. No more any one can talk of DRDO as sleeping or unreliable organization.

Nitin ji I view your programs rather regularly and this one is excellent. First of all my compliments to the entire DRDO. Special compliments to our youthful and humble chief Dr Reddy. In his response there was no padding of half truths, which is a hallmark of true scientists. DRDO is doing excellent work and seems to be professionally managed. I particularly liked his comment on Kaveri engine in clarifying that why there was a mismatch. A slap on illiterate politicians who criticise the engine. I am a 100% apolitical person and I compliment our political leadership in supporting indigenous development of items. If our ISI bribed and China spies come to power they will thwart the development as their moles firstly, and then go all out to import the items for kickbacks.
All these scientists are national heroes. I wish film industry made biopics on them. Jai Hind. Thankyou for all your hardwork Dr. Reddy.
P.S. I don't understand why army wants Israeli guns instead of ATAGs. And also I hope DRDO gets paid royalty if any of their technologies are used by Pvt industry.

So proud of DRDO and the Chairman of DRDO for the spectacular work that is coming out of DRDO. BDL; ISRO ; DRDO and a host of other Public sector Units have outclassed many big Private establishments. Thanks to their ingenuity and the speed at which they responded in providing the needed tools which come in handy to face our threat from Chinese aggression. After displaying their missiles of top class China is stopped in its steps trying to dominate India and occupy further of its territories!
One fundamental flaw in India's approach towards development of weapons is the separation of producers from development phases of the technology. In today's age this separation slows down the absorption of technology keeping producers inefficient. Glad to know that DRDO is involving production partners in the development of technology now. This will pave the way forward towards a highly specialized Military Industrial Complex in the future.

Leaving apart the technological development in DRDO, its is heartening to note that, a direct step to develop public and private industries by involving them right from inception stage of a concept and spreading the movement to college level is a highly commendable innovation by DRDO and GOI. We are still so weak in solid fueled rockets. This is in itself will reduce weight of the rockets and missiles. Also, increase the availability of missiles,
SFDR by DRDO , DRDO has solutions for every needs .
ISRO are the masters in using SOLID propellants in space technology and also many stratups have developed such like VIKRAM1
@@HKarts_ our space rockets, plus agni all are liquid propellants. We have not mastered solid fuel propellants. That is why our rockets are heavy and generate a lot of heat.
@@brownwash Astra has solid fuel propellant with Rudra.
Future is liquid fuel rockets (for space), as reusing the rocket will be the future and LIQUID propellants will be used in it.

Very good interview Nitin ji. The country should be proud of scientists like Dr Reddy --- the DRDO and various other defence and private industries. Everything seems to be very well planned even upto the extent of starting courses to kindle research in our defence items. I have few concerns about technology transfer to private transfer. Is there any system monitoring whether our technology will be transferred to our enemies by unscrupulous Indians at various levels. I am an Indian writing this. Furthermore, if we are selling Brahmos and other such high-tech items what is the surety it will not reach our enemies for reverse engineering.
The question is not what DRDO doing - they have been doing a lot and for a long time. But no matter how good a product evolves through testing - it can easily be sabotaged using changed service requirements and more number of tests to be done in the name of - "Proof of system"
The establishment is too entwined with the import lobby to shake off what's visible to all.
A Nation that can send successful - probes to Moon and Mars - is still reliant on defence imports for basic needs like service rifles
E.g. When DRDO and OFB develop a service rifle - "the recoil is the fault of the design"
When the US manufactured SIG ends up showing the same recoil - "the recoil is the fault of the ammunition"
When Barrel burst happens with M777 in limited tests - "Its fault of the OFB ammunition"
When Barrel burst happens with ATAGS after extensive and exhaustive tests - "Let us redesign the barrel to further improve the system"
Message to - L&T, TATA and Bharatforge -
"Stay away from indigenous defence designs and be happy with licence assembly of imported ones"
If the import lobby had its way - we could be importing nukes and ballistic missiles too through the emergency route!!
