  • Do you need a permit to cut a street curb? A very common question asked by many who are considering running and discharging their drain lines at the street curb. The short answer is "yes" - you need a permit to cut the curb, or to do any other type of modification. This requirement also applies to cutting your sidewalk too. I mention the sidewalk because often when installing and running a drain line from a French drain, or gutter downspout to the street curb many will cut the sidewalk, rather than digging beneath it. It's important to note you do not own the sidewalk, or curb in front of your home. Therefore any modifications you make to it will require the cities approval.
The long answer to the question is...the permit requirements change from city to city. And some cities have other requirements other than a permit. Many cities will want a security bond in order for you to perform the work. The amount of this bond will vary from city to city. In some cities you will be required to install a inlet/outlet adaptor at the curb, which your drain line attaches too. The city of Fayetteville, AR. has this requirement and you must install the specific outlet, which they recommend, at the street curb for your drain. Other cities do not have this requirement.
Municipality's are concerned with the volume of water you are discharging from your drains into the city storm water drainage system. Another concern of any drainage system are the contaminants carried by the storm water run-off. For these reasons many cities have a "First Flush Rule". Check with your local city to see what, if any, steps you are to take with your drainage system before depositing water into the street.
Call your local City Works Department, or Engineering Department to learn all about code requirements for cutting a street curb.

You need a permit for everything here. Good way for them to make some extra bucks. A lot of figuring there sometimes. Looks like you've got a way around it by not cutting anything. Good idea and even better the clients go along with it. Sounds like Lincoln really didn't have a clue. I do the same as you. Thumbs up buddy!

I called our city to have our sidewalk fixed and they told me it was my problem. I wanted to cut the curb and 45 degree it to build a driveway (off street parking). My yard is more than big enough. Thoughts of not involving the city?

That 4" PVC pipe set in concrete with the tiny bit of concrete above the PVC pipe is going to CRACK LIKE HELL and be gone in a year... It's going to look bad forever after and the guy that did it will be unable (or unwilling) to do anything about it. Glad you didn't do that one.
BTW, it's concrete, no cement... cement is an ingredient in concrete. Thanks for the video.

angurisloud thanks for the clarification on the concrete/cement. I never get that right 👌
And I absolutely agree with you on the cracking of the concrete above the pipe. See it all the time. And I’ve had it happen to me in the past as well.
The one you see in the video is actually one I subbed out to someone to do for me. Yep. And that’s how it looks to this day. Go figure 🤷🏾‍♀️
But it does point out why the cities (most) want those outlets used. Most end up looking like how you mentioned...cracked and broken!

angurisloud and they was an actual 4” core cut they did, not a cut off saw cut. That’s why I subbed it out. They could do an actual core cut.

Ok maybe this is a silly question but using just a gravity fed system would it effectively drain into the lawn? Assuming the pipe is 28 inches underground it has to sweep up at your discharge point so would the down pressure from the roof be sufficient to prevent backup I to the rest of the french drain portions?

I need this but OPPOSITE! I’m searching how to drain the tiny lake that gathers at the foot of my driveway perhaps into and under the sidewalk. Is this possible?

Hi, do you need a permit to dig your front yard and put a pop up drain?

Rick R. In my area, no. Check your local codes. Most cities do not require a permit in your situation.

What would be a fair price to charge a homeowner for downspout extensions?

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  4 роки тому

G V There are a lot of variables to that question. The cost changes depending on the type of material used for the drain lines. Typically, corrugated pipe is going to be the cheapest to install compared to rigid pipe. Other factors that impact cost include: accessibility. Is the area easily accessed with equipment. Most contractors use a linear footage system to figure out costs. So, if installing a corrugated pipe costs $10 per ft, a 100-foot run would cost $1000.00. However, other factors will impact that cost as I mentioned earlier. If installing rigid pipe, the cost per ft could very well double ..up to 20$ per linear ft.

@@Bellislawns I worked for engineered solutions and aqua guard and everdry. I have a side business where I do basement and crawl space waterproofing and Crawl space encapsulations but I want to add yard drains and down spout extensions but I have no idea what would be a fair price for a customer since the companies I worked for. Dont do any of that work. I appreciate you responding and I hope you make videos soon.

@@chirina5 the cost for downspout drain lines is done by the linear footage. I would think those prices will also be impacted by your local market. Most corrugated pipe installs charge $11 to $13 per linear ft. Whereas, solid rigid pipe can cost upwards of $19 per foot, or more. Best wishes with your new business adventure
