      @@HeyGrouch No problem man! But yeah that's a good way to put it. I'm definitely gonna be downloading this game in a minute, and chances are I'll make a video on it--it looks super dope. Everything you spoke about in this video regarding freedom and lack of restriction speaks to me as both a content creator and as a TF2 veteran with the FPS skills of a toddler. Good reviews are coming your way

    Aha found the video on the platformer! The changing projects constantly is a big mood!
    I think i figured out what was bugging me so much with the lightning. It looks fine with short distances, but long distances you teleport so far it feels disorienting. Less like a ground pound and more like teleporting elsewhere.
    An alternative would be storing the velocity, stopping all momentum, launch downwards at super speed with electric partical trail, once landed set velocity to stored value. Maybe with an additional bounce upwards from smacking into the ground.

      bind the hook to an easier button and press space as soon as you grapple onto something and start going forward, this makes the hook disconnect and give you a ton of forward momentum

    Dude I was literally thinking about a potential game exactly like this yesterday! Really cool to see you analyzing what makes games fun to move in!
    A potential idea I had was the grappling hook being able to latch onto and reel in the rockets themselves. If you were above like a massive pit, you could shoot a rocket down, grapple onto it, move a bit to the side, and when it hits you, it sends you flying, essentially rocket jumping off of the literal air. Could be a good idea for advanced movement tech.

    One of the better grappling hooks I’ve experienced is from a game called Worlds Adrift. It’s from Bossa Studios, the same folks that made Surgeon Simulator.
    The game’s defunct now, online only with servers that are no longer running, but the grappling hook functioned a lot like the Titanfall one. The main differences being (aside from unlimited use) that it gave you full control over the rope’s extension and retraction, and also had a launching mechanic that would instantly unhook the rope and give you a bit of extra propulsion in the direction you’re facing.

    • @HeyGrouch

    Very very cool concept.
    I think Rusted Moss does this too (Not with all weapons though, but it still does happen, and oh it also has a rocket launcher as well).
    With the addition of an elastic rope.
    Though it does also focus on combat... unlike you where you specifically focus on the movement and traversal, and maximum momentum manipulation.
    Have you heard of this game?
    Oh right, I wasn't trying to shit on your game, just drawing similarities, I really really like your approach!! well done!
    Edit: I was just surprised you didn't mention Rusted Moss, so that's why I'm asking if you even know it exists or not.
    I'd highly recommend playing this game, it's very satisfying!

      No offense taken! It's crazy you bring up Rusted Moss- I played the demo a while ago before the full version released! The crazy part is that the developer made a prototype back in 2018 called "Rocketjump Mountain" that helped inspire Thunder Jumper!! Small world

    • @HeyGrouch
      @HeyGrouch  11 місяців тому

      That's awesome! And I don't blame you for being terrified- level design is legitimately the scariest thing in all of game development, at least for me anyways 😅 What helped me was to "copy" levels from other games to see how they play with my own mechanics. For instance I put a few Super Meat Boy levels in my first prototype just to see how they would play, and they ended up being pretty fun even though Thunder Jumper moves nothing like Meat Boy!

    Rockets don’t despawn even if you press g, so you could beat levels with 0 seconds by pressing g before the rocket hits the goal and you can make the clock start later by boosting without pressing anything (if you hold d while restarting the timer doesn’t start, and space doesn’t start the timer at all)

  • @therpderp
    @therpderp 11 місяців тому

    I think calling it rocket jumping centers it a bit too much on being a movement utility only for rocket launchers, and personally i think the term "Blast Jumping" fits it better. Raze in Valorant is the perfect example of this. Sure she does have a rocket launcher, but that's not something she can use for blast jumping. Instead, she has her little blast packs have the ability to propel her. Even in TF2 you have the same thing, via things like Cannon Jumping with the Loose Cannon, or just sticky jumping in general as Demoman.

      You might be right. I was reading an article about how the game tricks you into thinking it's 3D when all the physics are actually 2D, which is why there aren't any overlapping floors in the game. I guess it might come down to semantics at the end of the day, idk- I've never programmed a game engine OR a rendering engine so I'm out of my depth here :P

    I already commented on the video but I wanted to separate my compliments comment from lengthy genuine question comment:
    What are your tips for this kind of “no-limits” platformer design? I’m currently making my own 2d-platformer that also has a focus on speed, agility, and momentum, but it’s my first ever actual game so I’m pretty new to game design.
    Any tips concerning mechanics, level/area/world design, enemies, etc?

    • @HeyGrouch
      @HeyGrouch  11 місяців тому +1

      Great question! By far the MOST IMPORTANT thing in ALL of game development is playtesting. You want to follow what is called an "iterative" design approach, where you get a playable game in front of people as quickly as possible. This first "iteration" would be a rough prototype of mechanics with only 1 real level. Art and sound doesn't matter here. What matters is seeing how other people play your game and hearing from their lips what is fun and what is frustrating.
      If 4/5 playtesters tell you something isn't fun- they're right. If they tell you how to make it more fun- they're probably wrong. Playtesters always know what's wrong, but almost never know how to actually fix it. That's your job as a game designer!
      Once you've heard from 5-10 people on what's good and bad about your first iteration, you can start work on iteration 2. Once you've finished fixing the problems you discovered during the first playtests, it's time to maybe add a level or two that builds on what you've learned, and then time for more playtests! Just for perspective- my Thunder Jumper demo is roughly iteration 6 or 7 (and I'm still not done iterating!). The more iterations you have, the more refined of an experience you'll be making.
      Rules for playtesting: Always watch them play. Never criticize how they play, or tell them they're bad at the game (it's more likely that the game is bad than that they're bad at it, sadly). Try to simulate an authentic play experience as if you weren't there- which means no telling them how to do things! If you have to tell playtesters how to do something, that's a problem that needs fixing!
      I hope this helps :) As for specific mechanics, level design, and enemies, that's all just different flavors of gameplay. A good designer could make a fun game out of just about anything!
