  • Many thanks to mr chris bell who owns a 2016 ford mondeo mk5.
    Mr bell became aware of a safety recall in america affecting the ford fusion...which is the american version of the ford mondeo in which the alloy bolts holding the electric motor onto the steering rack were in some cases corroding through and breaking which has led in some instances to the electric motor becoming detached from the steering rack which is a serious safety issue.
    Mr bell has discussed his story to make sure his car has had the new modified motor bolts fitted and to make ford uk aware of this serious issue.

    Many thanks for this video. I bought in 2015 MK5 Mondeo and after 7 years I had problems with stearing box. This video help me, because I didn´t know about recall from Ford. When I leave car in Ford service they confirmed the recall and change the stearinfg box for new one for free. Many thanks.

      Ford UK did do a recall for what they considered to be the affected production range although if I remember correctly it did take them until early 2021 to finally get round to it!

    This was a Bosch design flaw, it’s plagued several car marques, including Ford, BMW, Tesla, Land Rover that I’m aware of.
    Tesla acted quickly and did a recall but the rest dragged their heels, only recently have Land Rover started a recall on evoque and discovery sport where it’s become a common problem... previously their policy was to replace rack once it had failed already... which was just too late for some.
    There’s usually 6 bolts but they only replace 3 of them. The other 3 are where the rack comes out the casting and joins the track rod and holds the drive casing onto the main body.
    Then the upper 3 hold the motor to that drive casing that houses the belt.

    Land Rover have the same steering rack/motor issue with the Evoque/Discovery Sport. At first they did a warranty extension to 10yrs/150,000 miles. Recently DVSA have forced a full recall on all models 2011-2017. The US etc had recalls long before we did.
    It's probably the same Ford part on the Land Rover models. The official recall I believe is to replace the bolts, unless they snap on removal when it's full new rack.

    I received a recall for an Mondeo airbag issue. The garage also said "and the steering". I was unaware of this.
    I had been experiencing what I thought was over steering or even worn tyres so I had replaced all 4. None were below the legal limit but the steering was 'iffy'.
    On taking it in the airbag was fixed in a day but they sent me back out stating I needed a new steering rack and they would order it and let me know when it arrived. After driving for some while I expressed concern that it was not safe so Ford arranged a replacement car. However they have now said they have done all they can and there is no word of when they can get a replacement steering rack.
    3 months wait so far and still nothing. It concerns me that the garage knew what the recall was for but Ford tried to make it out to be something else. I have owned 4 Mondeos and will miss the car but it has soured my opinion of Ford.

    Ford made a recall in Denmark as well. My 2015 wasn't in for a recall, but as I know some of the mechanics at my local dealer, I had them check it up in a lunch break. Lucky mine was fitted with the new type bolts

    I was still servicing a 5yr old Toyota Avensis at the main dealer I broke a headlamp trying to change the bulb so they supplied and fitted a newer one free then about a year later did the same again and they said they'd extended the warranty on headlamps to seven years because water was getting in and they gave me two free fitted new ones, so main dealer isn't all doom and gloom.

    All good about the recall, except I never received the recall notice. The bolts went on my car and completely seized the rack. 2.5k in the end to get a new rack fitted. Only found out about the recall when I rang Ford a few weeks ago to sort out a different recall.

    My MK5 2018 is having issues with the steering wheel getting stuck / being sticky around the neutral position (wheels straight). No idea what could be causing it, I had tires replaced before this winter and paid for wheel alignment but it didn't help. The wheels react as they are supposed to, but the steering wheel just stops when going though 0° point and it's happening from both directions (both left and right turns). Anyone had similar problem or has a tip what to look for? Thanks in advance guys!

      Hi, I started having problem on my MK5, the steering wheel is not fully returning to neutral/center position after exiting turn but it's happening from both left and right turn. From your description it sounds pretty similar to your issue. Did swapping the bolts fix it? I was also thinking if it could be wheel alignment. Thanks in advance :)

      @BennySVK117 Well I'd completely forgotten, you've just reminded me that I haven't done it. I had read elsewhere of the sticking issue not being specific to the bolt issue. I messaged Ford UK as it's an issue with there ptoduct, they should change them, they came back with a long list of points to fill in, and being bad at life admin I'd forgotten it was even a problem.

      @BennySVK117 9 місяців тому

      @@dazp1 oh I see. I'm the same, forgetting a lot of things haha. So you contacted the Ford UK regarding the sticking issue or the alloy bolts that need to be replaced? Also, do you still have a warranty? I'm out of warranty so I'm trying to DIY it somehow. Or at least minimize the cost.

    Hello Alan! Owner of a mk5 2015 model here in sweden. One question, how do you know if the steering rack is about malfunction? How can you notice it when driving? Let say if one or two bolt snaps, how will the car react? I understand if the whole rack breaks loose that there will be a direct problem. The reason that i ask is that my car suddely without warning became strange in the steering one day during driving on a small bumpy road. The steering wheel has i "glitch" in rotating when driving straight, the car tends to steer right or left and i always have to sit and compensate, lets say about rotating the steering wheel 1 cm to right or left. Almost like the lane assistant was active and wants to steer the car. When I needs to steer more the there is a harder resistant, almost like the car was in sport mode. No lane assistant and no sports mode active. My first thought was the calibration/angle of the wheels. Have had the car in for calibration twice to check the angles, one time with winter tires 16" and once with summer tires 18", both of the tires set is ford original and calibrated ea c h time before they do the control av wheel alignment. The car has automatic gear box with 4-wheel drive. My ford dealarship dont know what it is and when i mentioned the steering rack problem in uk and america they didnt know what that was. They told me to activate/deactivate the lane assistant, i also could try to stop and restart the car when it appears. Do not work. So my thaught is, can this appears when one or two bolts has broken? Hope to hear your thoughts about this. Thanks !

    • @alan4x
      @alan4x  Рік тому

      the racks are pretty reliable and you dont know if its about to fail, best to just have those motor bolts inspected and replaced if necessary.
      without feeling your steering i cant tell but the top mounts on your front shocks can seize and cause notches in the steering

    • @alan4x

      to do a leak off test you need to remove the leak off pipes only from the injectors...it is tricky on those engines as it is awkward and having the correct adapter to fit into the injector leak off hole would help

I think it was fuse F21 from memory. I left it for 10 minutes and put it back, entered the Keycode and it started working again. I understand there's a software update for this issue but my dealer doesn't seem to know anything about it. Once it's been reset by pulling the fuse it keeps working for about 18 months.

    Hi Alan, love your channel and the detailed way you explain how to do repair jobs. Very easy to understand and very interesting.
    Here's a problem for you.
    I have a 2011 Ford Focus which blows a fuse everytime I switch on the high beams.
    If I disconnect the headlights and switch on high beams I can hear a relay click somewhere and the fuse does not blow.
    This suggests to me that the wiring is ok.
    If I connect the headlights and switch the high beams on the fuse blows straight away.
    I have tried this with only the nearside headlight connected and only the offside headlight connected but the fuse still blows so it's not related to one side only.
    I'm baffled.
    Have you come across this problem before and do you know what the likely cause is.
    Is there a way I can pinpoint the cause ?

    • @dexterd3459
      @dexterd3459 Рік тому +1

      It's ok I've sorted it out now.
      I recently removed both headlight units to apply sealer and prevent moisture getting in.
      I first had to remove all bulbs to get rid of all traces of water from the headlight units with a hair dryer.
      This is where it went wrong. When I refitted the bulbs, the high beam connector to the bulb has one spade terminal supplying 12 volts and it also has two metal tabs which make contact with the side of the bulb which makes the earth connection. On closer investigation it turned out that one tab got bent under the bulb causing a short circuit. I had the same situation on both headlights. I suppose it was kind of my fault but it's a bit of a crappy design if you ask me.
      I just had to bend the tabs back into the right place and now all lights work as they should.
      Keep up the good work making more videos Alan, I look forward to watching them.
      All the best, Dexter.

      @alan4x  Рік тому

    Car manufacturers in the US seem to be more diligent about safety issues. I believe it's due to the fact that they're more likely to get sued over there than anywhere else. This video explains all:

    Ford at tadcaster told me they knew nothing about it-I rang a few weeks later was quite persistent and the guy said oh yes, it’s only so many that’s affected, so I waited a few weeks and rang again. Been very Meek and mild and they told me they didn’t know anything about it.
    I bought a Mondeo in Ireland a few months old with a couple of thousand miles -it had been sent from the south of England into dealer stock in Ireland ford Direct car-I had a long conversation with them about checking for sagging dash “ we don’t know what that is, we’ve never heard about the problem “
    Well, can you check it?
    “No problem at all, so it’s perfect “
    So I got to Northern Ireland, and there was about a inch and a half of sag
    They said they would arrange to get it fixed at Ford Tadcaster
    They came back to me after a few days and said they were too busy there to fit it in in any less than two weeks. I could wait the two weeks or take it to the dealership at Castleford
    I ended up, taking it to Castleford and leaving it there to be fixed
    -which actually ended up taking three days
    I decided to ring ford Tadcaster and ask them if they could fix the sagging - ford direct
    Just like I expected, they turned around and said to me they didn’t know what was sagging dash , they never heard of it?
    I don’t think this is unique to them. I think it’s for policy with all dealers just to play the Wii don’t know anything about it sir card

      @@alan4x six visits ,endless phone calls, videos showing it not working and emails-continually told rubbish about software updates-numerous attempts at fixing it-endless time in the garage, The second from last time went to pick it up and didn’t even get away from the garage and it wasn’t working -at which point, they finally agreed what I’ve been saying all along that the central control radio panel needed a replacement-which meant it’ssat in the garage for nearly 3 months.
      Vehicle vehicle, then not used for about two months because of the coronavirus
      When the vehicle started to be used, that new panel would lock up at Pacific locations
      Which pointfor direct warranty came to an end and they didn’t want to know
      Luckily I’ve now found a very quick method of resetting it which on average needs doing about four times a day .
      Persistence, you’re completely right , but I didn’t expect that from the car industry, although I was used to it with certain motorcycle firms before moving over to cars
