I've had scoliosis from a young age and it was first noticed when I was around 10. My scoliosis was very severe and the doctors were wanting me to have surgery right away but thankfully my parents looked for an alternative route. After tons of research and different things I tried such as back braces, electro-therapy, and other chiropractic methods. We finally found a upper cervical chiropractor who does the Blaire Palmer method. Their method is based on the fact that if a vertebra in your neck gets misaligned, interference can occur to the nerve transmissions anywhere in your body, which can cause pain in your lower back, knees, scoliosis etc. You may notice a pain in your neck at first, but years later the pain in your lower back can be a result of this, and no amount of surgeries or physical therapy, although they can provide temporary help, will correct the underlying problem. So they seek to analyze and correct misalignments in your neck (mainly atlas) so that your body's nerve transmissions can flow properly and you heal yourself. When I was born my mom distinctly remembered that the doctor had to turn my head in weird way and she believes may have put my atlas out of place and that was probably what contributed to my body developing scoliosis. I've been getting my atlas adjusted for 20 years now and I've almost never struggled with any pain in my back and do not have issues with misaligned hips or things like that. I've just recently started taking exercises more seriously to help correct the curve however many people who go to the blaire palmer chiropractors have corrected their scoliosis through adjustments alone. However, because mine was so severe, I've had to implement stretching and other exercise in order to correct it but the adjustments alone prevented it from getting any worse. These exercises are great and very helpful but I do recommend anyone who struggles with scoliosis or other ongoing back issues to look into upper cervical chiropractors who do the blaire plamer method. I just want to share what I've learned and experienced over the last 20 years.

@@sscapion2650 Hi there, here's a link that may lead you in the right direction: blairchiropractic.com/blair-chiropractic-technique/ just so you know not every upper cervical chiropractor performs the blair palmer method so just verify when looking for a chiropractor that they do the blair palmer. It really does make a difference. My mom tried going to a upper cervical chiropractor (she moved away from the one we had) but he did not do the blair palmer method so it was not the same effect.

@@tayyaba1490 Hi, I'm not an expert in stretching and it depends on how your curve is, however, I do recommend targeted stretches like the one in this video, or Pilates moves or yoga moves. Pilates is very good because it incorporates stretching with core strengthening which is very important. Kind of like how he explains in this video, you want to build strength in the area opposite to your curve in order to sort of 'pull' your spine back to where it should be. I find the stretching where you lay straight out on your stomach and lift yourself up toward the ceiling as well as the stretch where you have your legs folded in underneath your stomach and face down toward the ground with your arm stretched forward above your head and stretching straight and also veering towards the sides to be very helpful for me

Someone asked if this really works. Until I came across this video, my scoliosis pain had been getting progressively worse, so that I couldn't go shopping or any other outings without undergoing intense and excruciating pain. I wasn't sure which way the scoliosis bent, but I couldn't bend right without pain, so I concluded that it must be a left bent, since that would increase pressure when I bent right. I did the exercises as described, several times and felt such relief of pain, I had no hesitation about doing more repetitions. I have been doing them now for four days, along with hip bursitis exercise, since that had developed also. I have been unable for a year to function without a back brace because of the pain, but today I have not been wearing it at all and doing my normal routine without pain, without pain, praise the Lord. Once an hour or so, I do the routine, which takes only a few minutes, and the intense muscle spasms I had been suffering have stopped. It's hard to believe, and I hope the result continues. I have hope I can go out again without fear of horrible pain overwhelming me. Thank you for this information. Bless you for sharing it on UA-cam.

Awesome video!! I was diagnosed with an S-curve at age 12. In my 20's I began treating it with advanced yoga, Yamuna body rolling, craniosacral, myofascial and osteopathic treatment. By age 45 my lower spine is completely straight and my upper is only 1" off center. These exercises look excellent. But what I would add is to combine them with loosening and stretching exercises - even between sets - otherwise you may see an increase in pain. I think you also need to mobilize or "unstick" the vertebrae, since most will have entire sections that are "fused" together and just move in a block - another thing that will prevent these exercises from having their full, desired effect. Just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing and I'll pass this along.

This is an excellent and useful video.
I have got into this problem twice in the last two years and fought my way out using these exercises. I am glad I saved it to my favorites the first time I got into this problem.
    Note for other patients:
    1. pain killers and muscle relaxants help. But don't overuse those.
    2. To get out of this crooked shape, loosen your body with stretching. Progress bit by bit.
    3. When I took rest, I lied down on floor with my legs extended against the wall with my glutes close by the wall. That helped stretch my glutes. At other times, I lied down flat on the floor without any pillow. If you had been doing a desk job working long hours to get into this problem, you will find it difficult to lie down on the floor with your legs stretched. But this is exactly what you need.
And lastly, when you get out of this problem, remember to never fall into this problem again.
Exercise regularly. Prevention is better than cure.

This will work regardless of your age. These exercise \ stretches undo the mistake you did in the first place.
The second time, I got into this, I tried the exercises the entire day in full pain. And you will get your mobility slowly and the freedom from pain. The whole process can take 3 days to be 80% pain free.

It was terrible that I could but move an inch. turning any direction was severely pinching my nerves. one week to recovery 90 or 95%. I took 3 days off when I did these exercises throughout the day. I worked from home the next two days partially working and partially exercising. Now more than a year from that incident, my back is its peak performance ever. This is because I am practicing Surya Kriya. This is a fantastic whole body exercise that I learnt from Isha Institute of Inner Science, Tennessee. Doing it consistently is the key. You can't learn it now when you are in pain. Follow this video to get it off the sidewise S curve... and then when you are normal join that Surya Kriya class near your home.

Hi UA-camrs. I am an osteopath ( 24 yrs experience ) and have just watched this video. It is clear, short and, imho, very good. I happen to have a mid 20s female patient who, coincidentally, has the exact scoliosis that Ed P is describing above. Her 2nd treatment is this week. I will be going through this video with her and encouraging her to do these exercises daily for the next 30+ years. One thing that people should realise is, very often, these bends of the spine CANNOT be totally corrected: they can often be improved to a certain degree but MOST IMPORTANTLY, they can be stopped from becoming worse. If people have reasonable expectations from the get go, they will end up not being too disappointed.
    Nice one Ed...great vid.

Thank you! I may take you up on that and I really appreciate it. For now I am doing these exercises daily and am already back to doing my other physical therapy exercises again, due to the healing from your stretches. I have already had at least a 50% reduction in pain since I started. I was able to go hiking in some hilly terrain this weekend and while it was painful, I was able to do it. I stopped to open my back up with these stretches throughout the hike. And I was not in horrible pain that night! I will be back again. My son is starting school this week so I’m busy and just doing this video plus my regular physical therapy, but I will communicate more when I’m ready for more. Thanks again, I am so encouraged by my progress already.

To everyone here, please don't just jump right into doing these exercises exactly as described here. It's possible your spine could be curved or rotated the opposite direction than the example shown in the video and if you do the stretches the wrong way you can do more harm than good. Go to a chiropractor and ask for an xray to see if your spine has problems. Most chiropractors aren't that expensive even without insurance. The one I went to was $50 for a visit with xray, $20 for a visit without an xray. When shown your xray, take a picture of it on your phone for your own reference and base your exercises around how YOUR spine is having problems. The chiropractor can also do adjustments and massages and show you stretches to help correct your condition if it is indeed something that can be improved without surgery.

Hey there, I'm 19 and have 3 curve scoliosis. When I was 14 I was sent to an orthopedic surgeon. At the point my spins curves were only 10-13 degrees. When. I went to the surgeon he didn't even touch my back or look at my X-rays he scheduled me for surgery in a few month. It was for spinal fusion of the vertebrae. I left there in tears, and never went back. A back brace could've nipped my scoliosis in the bud. But he didn't give me a chance or information. I was emotionally scarred and scared, I didn't seek anymore professional help. Here I am now 19 my curves are around 45 degrees. One curving to the right on my neck, back to the left and curving to the right between my shoulders, then curving to the left in my low back. I'm constantly in pain and discomfort. I do yoga now and it seems to be straightening. Many many doctors say its impossible to cure your scoliosis without surgery, thanks so much for this video! At least someone agrees with me! Ill be doing these exercises regularly (: thank you!!

Hey! It's awesome seeing videos like this, amongst all the others. I know when I was first diagnosed with scoliosis and I visited the physiotherapist who was recommended to me, they didn't treat it seriously at all, was no help, and turned me off from going to physio for this, which would have been a good idea at the time (10 years ago). I have a mild idiopathic scoliosis, most likely from bad sitting/lifting/posture habits as a teenager during growth spurts. I've done the stretch in this video periodically over the past few years and am at the gym 5x a week bodybuilding and stretching (I've worked hard to try and cover up my imbalances). However, I've always stopped your exercises after about two weeks. When I reach the two-week mark of doing these exercises daily, I always notice that my rotation gets worse. My lower ribcage on the right side begins protruding in the front even more than before. That is, the lower back left rotation seems to continue rotating left, getting worse. (I've had x-rays done and the curve in your video is identical to mine - my upper left rib cage/pec protrudes, while my lower right ribcage protrudes). Now, whenever I do the exercises my lower back starts to feel amazing as it's most likely opening up the area, releasing tension, and activating those seldom used muscles. So, my question is, in your experience, is this one of those things that may get worse before it gets better, as my spine, ribcage and pelvis work themselves out? I should also note that when I'm consistently doing the exercises I can definitely feel subtle changes/movements in my upper back/shoulder area as well as lower back. I'm just worried that it might be making things worse rather than correcting. I'm sure it's the latter.

Excellent video. My wife has a slight scoliosis in the exact same direction you demonstrated in the example. In the last year or two it has gotten slightly more pronounced. Its almost unnoticeable unless you see here back without a shirt on. She has been looking for some exercises to stop it from worsening or to even reverse it. Thanks for posting this.

Sounds good on paper. I haven’t met a spinal specialist who holds out any hope for me stretching my way back to normal. Can you show me a person who after being disabled by Scoliosis, is now back to normal via this method? Because I’ve given up being able to live a normal life again. I’m quite twisted: walking is difficult, so is sleeping; normal daily tasks like standing more than 5 minutes have become very difficult. Maybe you’ll understand my skepticism. I am open minded - I don’t have the luxury to be any other way.

Reduction in the curve is not possible for everyone. It’s easier in children, the older you get the focus shifts to slowing down and stopping progression. You can go here to see some photos and x-rays of changes:scoliosiscorrectionprotocol.com

    Hello, Edward!
I want to thank you a lot for this video! I found it very interesting and the most useful among internet and particularly UA-cam material on scoliosis issue!
I’m 24 and I have an “S”- shaped scoliosis, second phase (an angle of 21 degree).
I have been practicing your exercises for about four month on daily basis. I naturally felt some new experience and changes with my body. Hopefully for the good. :))
However, the past two weeks my left knee was disturbing me. It’s the knee of supporting leg (which I put on a book). I had to stop doing exercises to a lower back for a while, but it didn’t help. I went to the local clinic, where a doctor did an X-ray of the knee and prescribed me some pain killers and cartilage protectors.
So here is my question: what can I do in this situation? I want to continue doing my work out. But I’m not sure wether it’s okay to feel discomfort (and even pain) in the knee. And more then that, if it is not going to be worse.
I would be very thankful, if you find time to help me with one more thing, that worries me. I did an MRI and it showed that I have a flat back. As far as I can think: I have to do some more exercises in addition to yours to stimulate creation of natural curves such as: lordosis, kyphosis to help my body “smooth away” scoliosis curves. Is it correct?
I attached two links to my MRI picture, so you can see my case with your own eyes!
    files.fm/u/92e9hc9n#_
    files.fm/u/d6jjayh4#_
I really respect the work you have done and to hear your opinion is very important for me!
Look forward to hear from you!
    Sincerely...Jane

      @EdPaget  6 років тому

Jane Picasso You shouldn’t have any pain in your knee. So maybe lower the height of the lift or stop doing the bottom up exercises for a while. Once the knee is back to normal try the exercise again as we don’t know for sure if it was the exercises the caused and the pain. Secondly, the sagittal plane bending forward and backwards exercises are designed to help your kyphosis.

    • @janepicasso523
      @janepicasso523 6 років тому

Ed Paget Thank you for your reply! I get your point! It is, probably, the most efficient solution. But I wander, if in your opinion it could be pinching of sciatic nerve or something like that?
Because in my MRI’s medical report (remembering about an “S”- shape of my scoliosis) of sacrolumbar region of the spine, mention that I have protrusion of the disks in lumbar vertebrae (L4-L5 and L5-S1), with a bulging disk.
So my following further analysis has let me to conclude that it might cost me troubles with my knee. Because as far as I understand nerves in that part of a spine innervate exactly same parts of human legs, where I have pain.
I hope you find time for answering!
      Look forward...Jane

Hi there, let's make a simple intro:
I am 25 years old man who has 10 years of experience in bodybuilding and one year ago an 8-hour sitting job has been attached to my life. I can admit that I did not do any stretching first few years of hypertrophy training.
Consequences that I suffer from scoliosis(Like yours, depicted in the picture), flat thoracal spine (Instead of physiological kyphosis), also flat feet. I have grouped them all into structural problems.
I visited my physiatrist and we were discussing asymmetric strengthening and asymmetric stretching (The exact thing that you are talking about). She said that this is impossible to fix these structural bone problems by lengthening and strengthening muscles asymmetrically when someone is 25 years old.
Q: What do you think about her opinion? Do you agree?
One more thing, as a bodybuilder (Not, for now, This is just my hobby, I work as an engineer ) I have earned a lot of spasms that follow me every day. I have started finding some yoga poses and other statical/dynamical/spine compression exercises and can tell you that I feel great while doing these things, but the biggest issue that is bothering me is crepitation mixed with spasms in lats (Left lat crackles, and I have a constant feeling that I need to stretch it, let's say put it out from the body(a pose from your video 5:03, let's say vertical position... and when I do that dynamically, it crackles and I have a feeling that I put it out from the body and get more relaxed), while the problem with the right lat is the feeling that I need to put it out from the torso, let's say horizontal position, and the logic is the same as for the left one. Move it suddenly and it crackles and a feeling of relaxation fills me). From my perspective, crepitation from other body joints was increased for a little bit.
I have been tested my VItamin D concentration and it is 77 mmol/L which is a great reference value that could be higher in the future.
I will also check blood count in order to be sure that there are no rheumatic diseases.
General advice from my doctor is more yoga and generally stretching things as much as possible.
Q: What do you think? Do you have any advice? Should I do anything else to stop crepitation, and muscle spasms?
    Good day sir!

It will definitely help you to relieve pain, now to make your spine straight you should assess your whole body and see what other areas that might be contributing to your curves. Fixing the spine is possible but it might take years, and scoliosis exercises should become a lifestyle. If you want more guidance, DM me on:
