i am such a fan of Rodney and his researches, especially his talk in TedEx. Changes the way we care, perceive and feed our dogs at home. My dog iMac, a golden, lived to 14. He died last Sunday. We are glad it wasn't cancer or diet issues that he died of (he died because his hereditary bad hips eventually gave out and made him paralysed). Good to know that the dog outlived his body (any a way, though, but still sad). I have shared your UA-cam video filmed in TedEx to so many dog owners and hope their lives are changed too, Rodney! Rodney, thank you from me & my wife & my 13 yo Cocker Spaniel, Latte. With love, Andrew from KL, Malaysia. I subscribed to you straight away just now

I fed my dog raw complete meals from 4 months old when I changed him from the kibble that the breeder gave us. His food is made by a small local producer in England. We buy it in 500g frozen packs and they won the pet food industry best award in the UK. Its quite expensive when they're puppies due to the amount they eat, but the cost is halved once they're fully grown due to requiring less food.

Great podcast! My family have been breeding boxers for 20+yrs(hobby breeder, 6 dogs), we call ourselves 'simi-raw' feeders, that is around 25%--35% commercial kibble mix with raw meat. The reason for the kibble is mostly convenience. I can't stop thinking if our dogs could have lived longer with just raw.

My only negative comment is to say stay in your lane, I am an APRN, I remember in the 90 when JCAHO added pain assessment as the 5th Vital Sign and importance of pain management and I agreed that the sooner we assess and manage pain the less pain medication and length of time patient would probably need pain meds. I am old now and thus my eyes open and do I doubt the pharmaceutical company probably having a hand in the “opioid crisis” NO! Having said that the DEA and insurance companies had NO place telling medical professionals how to care for patients!
Having said that, I really enjoyed this video and I appreciate you speaking out about the problems with pet foods.

My dog just almost died from pancreatitis and now is also a diabetic and has to take insulin shots. He now eats a homemade slightly cooked low fat and a grain free diet. Low fat for the pancreas and grain free for the diabetes. I was trying to find a low fat grain free kibble to incorporate but have been unsuccessful, even with the so called prescription diet dog foods. At this point he will be staying on a homemade diet. Also, he gets carrots and green beans for snacks. No more store bought treats or kibble for my guy.

    • @brendaelder6

Low fat diet and “prescription “ feed has the most carb/sugar content. You can’t trust a vet to be smart. Most are seriously brainwashed and don’t want to learn anything new. Huge egos! I calculated sugar content for a client today. It was 61% and a hills low fat. She was flabbergasted.

Perfectly set up industry and alliances.
    Basic strategy:
1-Acquire credibility by hiring and paying vets and scientists
2- Make pet owners feel ignorant regarding feeding a dog, directly descendant from wolves, essentially carnivores, and also opportunistic feeders.
3- Make pet owners feel guilty if they provide dogs with natural fresh foods and instill fear that dogs may run into serious nutritional deficiencies.
4- If the dog gets sick later (due to the poor quality in most commercial per food) , the friendly vet will be making money treating your pet.
Feeding a dog natural fresh food is not difficult. It takes a little time and organization and depending on the quality some extra money.
The most difficult ingredient to supplement and add is calcium, but egg shells do the trick nicely. Just be mindful of portion control (depending on age and activity level) and add variety.
    - beef
    - turkey
    - chicken
    - lamb
    - eggs (and the shells)
    - sardines
    - liver/heart (chicken/turkey/veal)
    - brown rice/broccoli, carrots,
    - supplements if it makes you feel better: omega 3,6 oils (hemp seed/cod liver),
generally everything your dog needs is in these ingredients....
If you love your pet you feed it whole fresh foods (lightly cooked or raw).
If the dog is a tool for you and you prefer convenience, then feed it kibble, but be prepared to assume the health consequences.

    • @horizonzeromom
      @horizonzeromom 3 роки тому +2

"Make pet owners feel guilty" and then offers "If the dog is a tool for you and you prefer convenience..." I'm not disputing your argument, as I agree fresh/unprocessed is far better for animals and humans, I'm just laughing at these 2 statements within your argument, because that 2nd one can be seen as a passive aggressive way of making someone feel guilty

Lmao. And what ratios are you balancing these nutrients out? You realize dogs and wolves are much different animals? Think of chimpanzees and humans. You realize feeding studies are a thing in which Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, and Purina One are class leading?
In animal studies with dogs (beagles) do you know which food source is used to prepare the baseline animals?
You're talking nonsense and I'm tired of ignorant dog mom's thinking they know more than veterinarian nutritionists (which the aforementioned brands have) and research scientists.
Just stfu. You don't even know the beginning to your ignorance.

As someone who works in a major pet food retailer, I can say that we still have people coming in EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. concerned because their vets told them that grain-free food is dangerous to their pet. It's an exhausting, up hill battle trying to reeducate the costumer on why the DCM study was a sham and how their vets are essentially lying to them. I wish we didn't have to fight so hard against what the bias "experts" whose job is to take care of pets, tell pet owners without even having the data to back it up.

Check out the brands Instinct and Canisource (now available on chewy). I’ve done research for years and these are two I’ve found that have a lot of benefit (dehydrated raw) and a decent price for the amount of food (for my 18 lb dog, a small box of Canisource would last over a month if I was feeding it exclusively. For Instinct another more cost effective option is the kibble + raw variety. I also make some of my own food for my dogs cheap by buying gizzards or liver, ground lean turkey, eggs, beans, and frozen peas/carrots from Walmart. I don’t feed homemade exclusively to make sure my dog does not become deficient in anything. ALSO FDA recently quietly updated saying that there was no conclusive evidence at all that grain free causes DCM, and a lot of dogs eating big commercial brands also had DCM cases... What I think is that kibble should probably just be avoided if possible, or only used along with some more nutritious food.

The label games played by dog food companies is sickening. Unfortunately, the industry, worldwide, isn't strongly regulated. Words like natural, high meat or high protein, even grain free are mostly bs. It's left to pet owners to decipher marketing jargon, and ridiculously named ingredients.

Akc partners with purina on research what a joke. Most breeders I know personally feed raw or home cooked. I am sure they are a small % but their numbers are growing mainly because of the cancer rates with commercially fed dogs. If it is true that Legumes increase arthritis pain in humans is it true for dogs? Last I knew the best nutrition research was coming out of Norway is this still true?

I read to avoid grain-free due to canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and only if your dog has an allergy at best use grain-free. I know my dog's breed (golden retriever) has a high death rate with grain-free.

@Cali Girl If your grain-free food has potatoes or potato starch it's probably not high quality. I feed Acana Regionals. It has no potatoes and his stools are more solid on this food than it is with high quality grain inclusive dog foods.
