JDM Nissan Tokyo Taxi fitted with Air Lift air bag suspension - in detail

  • Slammed JDM Nissan Tokyo Taxi - fitting air ride suspension. This is a long overdue update on Jonny Smith's project Nissan Cedric ex cab from Japan. In this episode the car's static sprung suspension is modified to fit air bags from Air Life Performance.
Besides retaining a magic carpet ride quality, the air ride is adjustable and can be fully dropped on the floor for show purposes. Jonny's JDM Cedric needed custom fabrication, which is where Phil James at The Install Company came in - / theinstallcompany
The survivor Japanese import Cedric Cab was fitted with Air Lift components (www.airliftperformance.com/) and ride height can be adjusted via controller or phone app.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
The Cedric Y31 model stopped being made for civilians in the late 1980s, but continued for many years as a fleet car for service use. Jonny has loved the Cedric since he borrowed it to film an LPG piece on Fifth Gear a decade ago. So during lockdown, he bought it off Nissan!
    Air Lift Parts used:
    12v compressor
    Nylon air lines
    5 gallon aluminium air tank
    Part #58343 - Dominator Bags - retail at $95each -www.airliftperformance.com/pr...
Part #27682 - Air Lift Performance 3P management (pressure based programmable settings) - Retail set at $1895+ options -www.airliftperformance.com/pr...
Part #75559- Air Lift Performance Builders Series: www.airliftperformance.com/pr...
With modern air ride set up like this one from Air Lift Performance, you can maintain original ride quality, but with adjustment using a touch pad or even a phone app. This episode is, therefore, a bit of a 'how to' guide on how air suspension works, how it gets fitted to a car and what the result of slamming a car looks like.

Maybe others have mentioned. The braided steel air lines, zip-tied to the rubber brake lines, make me really nervous. The one will just nibble/saw away at the brakes line. I'd think about wrapping those sections of the braided line that come in contact with your rubber lines to offer a bit more protection. In a dream world I'd replace the open braided lines with covered braided lines.
Anyhoot, love the show. Fun stuff.
Oh! And keep the stock motor. It fits the spirit of the car.
    Cheers.

This is still cool to see. After two years on the road I bought and installed a Air Lift Performance system on my Lupo (with the help of a friend whose installed them before). After going from standard suspension with loads of bodyroll etc to cheap £200 coil overs which were really stiff then going to this air system it's definitely my favourite. I don't even run a front ARB (don't tell the DVSA😅) mainly as the struts didn't have a mount for it but to be completely honest it doesn't need it imo. Sticks the road well not too bumpy (more road quality dependent) great daiky drive and has been for the last three years. Just a shame I ran too wide wheels I had to run massive camber to fit and used to go through three every couple months. This is definitely something I will so to my next car

I really appreciate the wonderful technical explanations.
Can the compressor still be used for other inflation purposes or only for the air bladders?

Looks good! It was very interesting to see how air suspension can be fitted to a vehicle. I like the touch of adding the Japanese registration area and classification to the number plate! Looks good as is, but if you want to be really authentic, this taxi was operated out of/registered in Ota City, Tokyo and should therefore be 品川 (Shinagawa) and not 多摩 (Tama) as shown. Looks good as is, but just thought I'd let you know just in case you want to be as close to the original as possible. Shinagawa number is one of the most popular in Tokyo rather than Tama which is to the West of the Tokyo Metropolitan area and more the suburbs. Please note, that the number may have changed when the vehicle changed hands in Japan and was re-registered in the Tama registration area prior to you purchasing it. Whilst it isn't possible in the UK, the plate would have had a green commercial plate with white writing when it was an active taxi.

Another Good vid and amazing engineering displayed. A nice tweak to the ap or control unit would be to have an automatic fail safe to not be able to go into full drop if car moving and also not to be able to set off from parked in full air out either so if unit sensed movement it would pump some air in automatically to lift car to minimal rolling height.
