Why Are Movies Becoming Harder to Watch?

- Movies are becoming harder to watch for some of us. They aren't getting any worse, but the process of watching them and even picking what to watch has become quite difficult. TikTok. Doom Scrolling. Streaming Services. They all play a part in shortening our attention spans and giving us content burnout due to there being too much content. In the end it's traditional activities like watching films and TV shows that suffer the most.
We'll be taking a look at how all these factors ruin your enjoyment of TV and film where it's even becoming difficult to focus while watching them. Dopamine, our addiction to instant gratification, motivation, and changes in the film industry are just a few of the topics we'll be covering. Although our focus will be on film, this problem is everywhere, even outside of entertainment. But we'll also be going over some ways to help fix these issues.

I have a theory that people (generally) don't _watch_ movies anymore-- they _listen_ to movies. As in, they'll turn a movie on in the background or go to a theater, but they're really just watching their phone, or making out, or talking with their friends. That's been my experience almost every time I've tried to watch films/shows with people in the last decade. Try to have a discussion about the art, and nobody even remembers what they just sat down and "watched". It's really sad.
Sadly it's true and the industry knows it as well. That's why so many Netflix and streaming movies are so damn generic. It's content for people to play in the background and afterwards they still feel as if they watched something half decent. Even a screwball comedy from the 50s rewards your attention more and is deeper than most of the so called "dramas" of today.
i really like complex movies, but movies like oppemheimer was so overhyped and boring yes boring really needs niche audience to enjoy movies like this same as the joker movie they are well made but they would never been this much in media center unless for marketing thats the big reason
@neogeo1670 I dunno about that. Marketing can help get the movie attention but if it's bad it usually doesn't matter how much the film was marketed. Joker and Oppenheimer are bad examples as well because R-rated movies traditionally make less then PG or PG-13 movies and those two miraculously broke the billion dollar mark when no other R-rated movie had done that before. They are good movies.
I'm a bit of a victim of this. It's affected me in three ways.
1. I do struggle more with watching longer movies. It's especially tough because I've been really trying to watch epics and the famous films of Scorsese and Coppola, which span two or even three hours.
2. Listening but still doing something on my phone means that I do forget the images of the movie more. I love learning about blocking and staging and camera shots but a little too often I won't even watch every second of the film and miss these masterful moments.
3. However, as mentioned in the video, color is a big draw. I think color theory and more colorful cinematography is succeeding more often these days because we're drawn to it. I personally have invested a lot of time and thought into learning about it because that can be a big reason for drawing me in.
I quit trying to watch movies w) other people loooong ago. You miss too much information that's critical in keeping up to the evolving plot.
Quick reactions or comments are fine. Full out talking? No thanks. Someone who gets up/
sits down repeatedly, constantly in and out of the room is just as distracting. It overtly affects your awareness to the minute details fueling the storyline.
Besides, they make movies to watch w/ others. They're called comedies.lol
Movies aren't content. They're art.
Streaming Services: Artistic content for profit
This has never been true. One can designate some films as art just like any other media. It is more accurate to refer to any kind of filmed entertainment as commercial art. Movies are just as much of a business as any artistic work, if there is no chance of at least recovering costs the likelihood it gets made is pretty much zero. At least in the U.S.
FilmStack honestly feels like the video essay goldilocks zone. Not too much editing, not too little. There's a passion underlying the videos and its contents, but the overall message and argumentation is sensible and not just another "hot take" to stand out. The pace doesn't feel rushed for the TikTok crowd, but also doesn't veer into insufferable "Why X is an underrated master piece, explained in a mere 12 hours" territory with ungodly amounts of tangents and filler.
It feels like grabbing a cup of coffee and having a chat with a usually quiet friend but who is very observant and always willing to bring nuance into a discussion when talked to.
Definitely the most relatable video you've made
Thanks it means a lot! It’s a video I’ve been meaning to do for a while now. Experienced a lot of these issues myself but also see a lot of people going through it these days
*as someone who doesn't have these problems it's hard for me to understand why people are struggeling with watching a movie without any kind of disturbance. Watching 'Return of the King' in the 4hours and 20minutes extended cut is the best thing for me every year.
2:18 this is exactly why I’ve tried to avoid TikTok and short form content in general. Fuck being controlled by drivel. Do something with yourself and your life. Put the damn phone down.
And that’s a good argument for going to the cinema. You’re not gonna whip your phone out whilst in a theatre (I hope not anyway)
You’d be surprised haha had a guy in front of me on his phone the entire time during Killers of the Flower Moon
Same! The woman in front of me while I watched Pricilla had her phone brightness all the way up and was snapchatting someone on and off the whole movie..
Part of the reason I don't go to the theater much anymore is because of the rise in smartphones in the last ten years, everyone has one and there's always a few assholes playing on them through the whole film, ruins any kind of enjoyment when there's a bunch of bright screens waving around in the dark.
@@CapOlimar probably a good argument for trying to find times to go where there will be fewer kids (or people in general) there
The amount of time we spend consuming media hasn't changed in my lifetime. In the 80's and 90's most families put the TV on when they got home from work/school and it would stay on until they went to bed. We wasted a lot of time watching bad and/or forgettable tv programming just to fill the time until our favourite shows came on.
Also, people forget that they watched a lot of mediocre movies last decade or the one before, etc. There really are only a small number of movies made in most years that stand the test of time. Saying that movies were better in the past ignores all the other movies that they have forgotten they even watched them.
For the past 6 months ive switched to physical media for all movies. Its a commitment and a ritual that ensures ill finish a movie and removes the endless choices. Its made move watching fun again
Good idea.
We started rolling dice, makes things easier. Choose genre, then one or two favorites movies from said genre, best two out of three wins. Like another commenter said, physical media helps.
It's one of the reasons why I still like going to the theater. I can escape for a few hours from all the daily habits and technology constantly competing for my attention. I want to put myself in a place where I can really focus on something and the end result is almost always a more impactful experience.
Maybe I'm weird but I pay more attention to movies than i ever have. I'm so attentive when watching a movie. I'll rewind something if I miss one word
You’re not weird, it’s all about intention. For somebody else, their brain feeling the need to constantly rewind and catch every little thing can be annoying because it’s not something they want to do and they want to just keep watching. But in your case it’s a positive thing for you so just go with whatever feels right in your heart and spirit.
Great video. Also, imagine dropping Mindhunter…
Movies are also first a form of escapism for a lot of people. The average person is going to watch one or two artistic movies a year. So nowadays there so many forms ways to have the same experience that you once had
I think it has to do with the lack of Subway Surfers playing at the bottom half the movie screen at all times. They really need to add either this, minecraft gameplay, or some random guy in the kitchen making food. Without these motivators, I can't stay focused at all during the movies, and I begin to give in to my urges to peacefully throw popcorn randomly into the crowd.
Sometimes it depends on my mood
On some evenings, I can be completely immersed whereas with others, I’ve REALLY got to try to get focussed. Usually, it isn’t a problem with the film itself yet if I’m tired, I can find it harder to focus
So yeah, it’s a day by day thing for me rather than a phone thing (probably because I try to avoid using my phone when watching a movie and instead only use it if it’s bad as I can then make jokes about it with friends)
What If The Russo Brothers, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder or Joss Whedon directed the TF films instead of Michael Bay
It's not just with films. I've noticed it with sports as well. Lots of younger people would rather sit and play a video game of a sport rather than watch it on TV for real. Why sit through something for hours (a lot of which is slow paced and includes ads) when you can get involved yourself and get a high in a much shorter period of time by playing a game yourself? This would explain the rise of eSports.
I got the PSVR2 headset, and one of the best things about it is watching movies. The picture isn't as good as a 4k TV, but it's just cumbersome enough to take off and put on to make it not worth doing just to check my phone when I don't really need to.
Once I realised this was happening to me, I trained myself back into being able to focus on a film right to the end. I had to identify the things that were distracting me and find ways to make sure they were not distracting me during the film. It took some thought because there are more things to distract us now and so many companies who make a profit from trying to capture our attention in short bursts. Being immersed in a film is hugely rewarding, though, and it becomes easier once you decide to do it. As a teenager, of course, it just came naturally to me...every film was completely immersive and every film was completely gripping. Now I have to remind myself that it's worth staying focussed.
This video is not only thoughtful, explaining my situation perfectly, but practical with good advice. Thank you!
I'm in a very weird middle ground where I can do long term activities like literally reading a 9000 page book and short term ones like watching tiktoks/video essays all day but I simply can NOT put a dent on mid range activities like my movies/series/anime/art lists. It's very confusing.
I use simple technique: I start with watching things, that I think will enjoy the most
Oh my god this problem has been plaguing for the past 2 years
12AM friday movie is my fav weekend activity and I can’t for the life of me keep my focus for the entire duration of the movie. I used to watch movies in 2hrs sittings with no interruptions whatsoever
Because movies suck now.
@@bigtechisbigbrother8690Your dumbass didn’t watch the video huh? Dude literally explained that even if you like the content, having so much of it available is still another form of over stimulation.
Sooooo suddenly relatable lately man- I watched about 880 film’s last year and can hardly pick anything this year
I sleep not because the artist is at fault; I fall asleep because I have a vitamin k2 deficiency
Great video. I felt the need to tell you that, and to tell you that I watched until the end before I contemplate... I wonder how many people couldn't get through this video because it's longer than 90 seconds.
It’s interesting really…I don’t get why. I’ve got a list of films that I’d like to watch and I’ve been going through them slowly. Literally yesterday I watched the 4 hour gone with the wind completely hooked without a minute break, yet when I watched Dune 2 or Oppenheimer in the cinemas I couldn’t keep full focus. It’s strange really - I also feel I’m more likely to fall asleep in the cinema recently not sure why though
There are definitely ways to measure attention span. Such as the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART). I use this in experiments.
IMO
Film authors today completely lack an attitude about life.
It’s mostly because the movies are completely void of anything one can relate to.
Self evident truths about the human experience are banned for woke reasons and you get a lot of pussyfooting around major societal issues, especially capitalism and all the actors are beautiful and completely devoid of character.
Watch a good movie from the seventies that speaks any kind of truth and you will be hooked instantly.
Shit, Brave Heart feels like Tolstoy compared to Dune 1 and 2 and that shit wasn’t exactly avantgard when it came out.
I fully agree!💯 Plus flicks these days just aren't downright clever with their storytelling.
I've been struggling with content burnout. I have too many streaming apps that I bounce back and forth between trying to figure out to watch (aka just have in the background). My solution was rediscovering my love of old Hollywood films which force me to keep my phone down to appreciate the costuming, storyline, and script. Just watched Vertigo and Rear Window and found them so refreshing compared to modern-day films!
it's not me, it's the movies being made. I've been watching movies from the 70's, and it's been fantastic.
Same. I feel like if everybody would go back and watch 70's/80's movies they'd realize that it's entirely a matter of quality. Movies aren't fun to watch anymore because they're genuinely not as well made as they once were.
Yes, there were always bad movies, but I could easily list a dozen or more beloved classics that came out just in the year 1986. If I tried that for the last decade, I'd struggle to find more than 3 in a year, if any. Filmmaking has become content creation.
@@bagggers9796 I don't know if you are familiar with Siskel and Ebert's review show. They have both passed away now, but they became critics in the late 60s and even as far back as the 90s were saying how films were just not what they used to be. And yet the 90s is now considered a strong decade compared to now.
not 70's for me but i agree and think its cause of the internet and the beast its become is a big reason why things have changed so drastically, often for the worst in terms of our entertainment.
@@dj71162 My theory is that we remember mostly the best films of past decades, while there actually are good films being released constantly. We just don't appreciate them enough because they don't have the benefit of being classics yet. They might also be buried under less compelling but more popular movies which bring down the sense of overall quality of movies being released. Time also contextualises movies, and only when looking at the past do we recognise overarching themes in art and media, which give depth and understanding for the works.
Great movies are still being made. 2010 was a fantastic decade of films.
Personally think it's just the movies being made. Used to go to the theater 2-3 times a year with a gang of friends to see a new release. Now we've gone 4 times in the last 3 years and 2 of those were to see both new Dune movies. We're playing board games or doing something else as a friend group other than movies now.
Last year was a good year for movies. This year has had some good ones too
@@nicholasd3990 Such as?

I think my problem is that movies are just not the same anymore. Most modern movies don’t have the same effort put into like back then. I find myself getting bored of watching new releases compared to movies released in the 2000s. I think the massive degrade in movie quality has to do a lot with why people can’t stay focused.
agreed, i've been watching alot of the stuff i missed during the late 2000's and 2010's lately, shows and movies, and most of it is far more enjoyable than anything made in the past 5-10 years, for me anyway

I usually leave my phone in my kitchen when I'm about to watch a film
I’ve started to do this as well otherwise I end up mindlessly scrolling missing most of the film
I feel like if you had clips of someone talking about the topics in between then it could help make it more engaing help slow down the pace a bit without having to constantly go from scene to scene from random shows/movies
good video
For me it’s the messages and romances they force on us with shows and films.
Well in my case UA-cam can be addictive, but Tiktok turns me off. It is just trash content, and after 1 minute i cant watch it anymore. UA-cam is different. There is much quality content on UA-cam. Like this video here.
Luv da vids
People don't watch movies anymore, because 98% are utter shit at least for "Hollywood" movies. But generally shows is where quality is at these days, even though there's a lot of garbage there too.
I stopped watching TV since 2020, especially movies. I find 99.99 percent of modern movies boring.I prefer searching, selecting and watching the videos I want on UA-cam rather than watching movies on TV I really avoid watching modern movies but for some reason I love older movies from 2014 to 1960.I'll give you an example. I avoid watching James Bond Daniel Craig movies But I love watching all the other older James Bond movies I feel that modern movies are depressing and unsatisfying, and most of the time you regret watching them, and some movies are just Hollywood propaganda. This applies to the James Bond films, Daniel Craig. I feel sorry for his character, James Bond. I do not want to be in his place, unlike James Bond before him.
Rudewaan South Africa. You sound young but that was more wise than intelligent. Big fan now. Thanks! 😅🎉
The audio for many recent movies is poorly mixed and harder to decipher words. You can keep an audience engaged with crappy 720p video with hi-fi surround sound and they'll love it, though you can have a crystal-clear 4K film with buzzing, muffled dialogue, and you'll lose the audience completely.
That's why I strictly watch sci-fi stuff.. so as to not lose my way
I still watch films. But it may take me a day or two to finish. Unless they really grab me from beginning to end. It's mainly because I watch them on my phone, which gives me too many options. I still watch traditional television on a television screen via streaming. That holds my attention much better. I'll start watching films that way to prove my theory. I think watching films on the phone really just gives the film too much competition with other applications and platforms.
It's because new movies suck. I opened up my old DVD case and put on some old movies from the 00's and 90's. I had no problem sitting through them. Movies were just better back then, true art and excellent acting and great stories that could holdd your attention.
Yes!
I've watched over 500 movies so far in my lifetime and only a very small percentage of them I've watched are from 2010 and up.

@@anshumansingh9963 Nah you're fine and weren't too harsh and it's legit about your point on tech it's just tech has taken over where storytelling has fallen to the wayside in favor of generic tropes to tick a set of criteria boxes in order to hyper focus on the pretty colours.
IF storytelling was taken seriously you'd see absolute epics every time when meshed with the current day's tech.
It would be an absolute golden age of film making.
@@anshumansingh9963 Well thank you, it was inspired by your response to me.🏆
For me its the terrible writing and forced messaging they put in everything. That's why more people are collecting the older pre messaging stuff or cutting out tv, movies and games all together for other hobbies. It seems like the people making entertainment are out of touch with reality and the majority of the audience. Also it doesn't help to alienate or insult the audience.

I miss the days of being able to buy DVDs.
You can buy dvd’s at Walmart, target and at thrift stores, as well as Amazon. Most of mine come from thrift stores for $2-$5 and play perfectly. It’s a fun treasure hunt.
@@dana7340 No Walmart here in Namibia. We used to have Musica, but that's gone now. Not sure I'd want to order through Amazon, etc., due to the shipping fees, etc.
Going to the cinema is expensive. Watched movies on Netflix years ago, but wasn't impressed with the options back then. After DVDs went out of fashion, the only place I found DVDs here, was at a second-hand book store, but there were not many options. At least I was able to buy True Detective Season 1 and 2 from there.
I don't have this issue either.
That is why I chose what to watch
I can't stand the amount of people who watch a movie only to need the entire thing explained to them afterwards. I'm not talking about the deeper symbolic aspects, I mean the entire basic plot.
I don't mean they're distracted while watching either. I've seen people sit quietly and clearly pay attention for the entire film, only to sonehow miss the entire plot.
Sequels and remakes are huge not only because the studios are greedy, but I also think the average audience is getting dumber. It's hard to say that without sounding arrogant, but I saw a guy watch Dune only to afterwards think the movie was set on Mars. So fuck it.
They are too damn long now! Three hours! Why?
It's a science experiment to increase the size of the human bladder ;{).
But there have been 3 hour films for a good while now. The old "Epics" like Ben Hur
were 3+ hrs, but they had intermissions. I prefer a 90 minute movie myself.

"our attention spans our shortening" followed by a list of things that we *choose* to use to shorten our attention span.
Those of us who grew up in prior eras who have adapted to use smartphones and Short Form social media and all of that... somehow don't have this problem.
Choice to consume immediate gratification directly leads to requirement for immediate gratification.
Movies themselves, aside from specific examples like Christopher Nolan's sound mixing insanity, haven't become harder to watch.
It's just that there are more people who find Dune "boring" or "I watch Das Boot on 2x speed and don't regret it.

skill issue
Let's be real... modern movies are made for "modern audiences" and well.... they suck. Most of them at least. Most the people that stopped watching movies are also the ones not delving into TikTok and social media. If the idiots in Hollywood would just make a movie from 2008 again, they'd see a packed theatre. Top gun maverick is a good example. But the problem is they have used up most of the audience's good faith and most the audience has just grown apathetic at this point... to the point of not even wanting to see movies that might actually be decent.

Because the films of today are not good. The best cinema comes from decades past: the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. And to a considerably less extent, the early-mid 2000s.

Most movies suck now and they have shitty plot lines and soso writing lmaooooooooooooooooooo
movies have become boring and too woke for me to watch. you easily see through the subliminal messages and predict the ending easily
I’ve never been a movie person to begin with
me neither i've always prefered games
It's not hard at all, but most movies these days are quite frankly complete garbage. You'll know the difference between one of these great movies, and the average movie. But why would these companies ever do anything more than the average? You guys will pay for that new low quality MCU movie anyways.
For years now I thought maybe it was because I was getting older that I was losing enjoyment in that stuff, but then I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once and I was once again reminded of what an *actual* good movie is like. It's not entirely about our attention spans, they just are simply not worth our attention.
Decades ago there were a ton of forgettable movies, but many of us forgot it.
Same thing but different decade and nostalgia effect
