Thanks, Tim as It is always smart to have both contracts from several companies and my own personal private students, it is a great way to fill-up those empty slots. I started with lower paying contracts like Cambly $10 per hour , Cambly Kids $12 per hour. I also have worked with companies in Korea audio classes $15 per hour and Korean video classes at $17 per hour and then replaced them all with a higher paying contract and I get $22 per 50 minutes. What I've learned from working with companies is It's so much better to diversify your portfolio and NEVER EVER PUT ALL YOUR EGGS in ONE Basket.
I worked on VIP kid from 2018-2021. After the regulations I worked on Open English then Cambly Kids. I was surprised to find most of my students were from mainland China. I opened up slots with VIP Kid, thanks for the info!
Tim, I had a similar experience, but I didn't use a fake account to sign up. I used my original VIPKid account (now called VIPTeacher) and saw that there were many jobs on the Job Board. I applied for quite a few of them, but after I passed the quizzes, there was no indication that I was now "certified" to teach those classes (no email confirmation, no badge showing I had earned the certification, etc.). I'm also a bit confused, but figured I'd wait to see if I get any emails in the next few days. I have not seen or heard of re-doing a mock lesson after my originally being hired with VIPKid back in 2018.
Hi Kristi, if you were a former VIPKid teacher, then you should be able to just login and open up slots. Do you see the calendar to open up slots or just the same screen as me with my dummy account? If you have the full dashboard as if you were a teacher that can open up slots then if you pass the quizzes you are certified.
Okay, so like, I have my profile, got my TESOL and online TEFL....Am on the jobs board screen now, and doing the certifications thing. If I am THEN invited to do an online demo, that's when I'll be hired? I'm still confused as well.
I find it really bizarre that they aren’t hiring from a handful of states… VIP always has quirks that amuse or confuse me 😆 But having lived in China, I guess it shouldn’t surprise me.
Well its actually completely normal now for online ESL companies, they can't comply with the Independent Contractor laws in those states which require gig workers like us to receive benefits, etc (there is a longer explanation online)... VIPKid and all the others were forced to stop hiring in CA and then NY many years ago. It has nothing to do with China, it has to do with laws in those states. In CA, it is called Bill AB5 I believe.
This is different than my example of applying as a new teacher. If you can open up slots then you are hired and it just is a waiting game unfortunately. I am not sure why they are hiring if existing teachers are opening up slots without bookings...
I'm wanting to apply to this and possibly a couple of other online teaching platforms. I don't have a TESOL certificate, just one through International Open Academy which I'm not sure counts. But my Bachelor's degree is in Early Childhood Education, so would I qualify? I dont have any online teaching experience. And thank you so much for you videos. They have been truly helpful.

Hello, I’ve been watching your videos trying to figure out what company would be a good fit for me. I’m TESOL/ TEFEL etc certified but the online community is … overwhelming to say the least.
Its been a long standing law in certain states prohibiting some companies from hiring because of Ind. Contractor regulations and poliicies that companies can't adhere to. You can google it, its been around for a few years.
Vip did not give me info about the lesson that i would use in the interview. The evaluator ended up canceling a few minutes before my interview. This sounds like a red flag. $14 an hour is misleading. You have to consider preparation time for each class and student, feedback forms, etc. It’s a shame most companies pay such little money, it’s clear that the company is pocketing most of the money that students / parents pay.
It isn't really misleading. There is no prep and the feedback form used to take me 1-2 minutes. Back in the day, I was making $24/hour with them, but those days are gone.
