  • We took the Calmac Oban Craignure ferry at the end of August 2017 on a beautiful sunny morning to do the 3 Isles Tour. In this video I will only cover the first leg of the journey to save the video from getting to long. Don't worry as I will add the rest of this marvellous tour with following videos.
We left our Bed and Breakfast accommodation to catch the ferry which departed Oban at 09.50 in the morning and arrive in Craignure at 10.40. As this was a pre-booked trip we didn't nor did we need the car as everything is laid on for us.
This includes the ferry to Mull, a coach from Craignure to Fionnphort, another smaller boat to Staffa and back to Iona, a ferry back to Fionnphort, Craignure and Oban.
As the ferry pulls out from Oban harbour we are soon treated to a panoramic view of Oban stretching out along the bay. Hovering over the town like a crown, is the partially completed folly, McCaig's Tower built in 1897.
The view on the opposite side of the boat of course is the small island of Kerrera with the mountains of Mull as the backdrop. Soon we will be clearing these and into the main channel of the Firth of Lorne.
Sailing through the stretch of water between Duart Point lighthouse and Lismore Island opens more vistas up through Loch Linnhe. On both sides of the loch we can see the ranges of mountains stretching up to Fort William with Ben Nevis visible on a clear day.
Looking back towards Oban you will see the peak of Ben Cruachan now clearly in view. Shortly after we will be pulling into Craignure where our buses are waiting. Our coach will take us on our next leg of the journey which will be Fionnphort. Other coaches await to take others onto Tobermory and elsewhere.
