No idea how successful Roy is as a competitor but he is one of the most professional video instructors, multiple angles, very clear verbal delivery, good pacing.
Ed McGuigan he competed back in the day, check his fight against nick Diaz. He’s definitely one of the top teachers out there.
This was made 11 years ago. His videos are definitely ahead of their time.
11 years later that comment got anwered
“Don’t get greedy,” awesome! Thank you for all the camera angles.
Professor Dean, I was watching the DVD where you competed at West Side submissions. The way you handled yourself was very influential. I saw you utilizing many of the techniques that you teach. Let alone, the flying triangle that you pulled off. You are an inspiration to BJJ practitioners everywhere. Thank you.
Roy dean and stephan kesting, the best teachers
1:17 Elbow escape (frame)
3:37 Spinout (backdoor escape)
4:51 Knee escape
I just love taking the arm with me when you square up with your opponent, like you show in the first escape. Awesome detail.
This is the most useful video I've watched on how to escape side control. Roy, you're an amazing teacher!
Agreed
So awesome. I’m going into my fourth week and I’ve already successfully used the spin out escape.
There's some sort of effective simplicity in all your videos that I just gravitate to as a student. Top notch teacher.
I think Roy is one of the best teachers out there, the way he breaks down moves is incredible!
This stuff is gold. So well explained. Thanks heaps!!
Man this stuff is gold! So well thought out and really well explained. Thanks heaps.
loving the videos, keep them coming !
I glad that I fell up on these videos! The instructor is very smooth and clear on the techniques.
They are going to help a lot, when I go for my blue belt!
Thanks for the videos!
Listen, Roy Deans DVD's are the truth. I have been progressively getting better, and his simple practical application methods are genius. Keep up the good work professor Dean!
Nice! Thanks for the detailed explanations and showing different angles.
Just what I needed thanks Roy
i like the way you explain the concepts. Really helpful. Thank you.
Roy once again, another fantastic vid on the side mount escapes! I haven’t seen any better or more well produced vids on here! Your knowledge and understanding of this great art is totally fantastic! I’d love to be able to train with you sometime! I know you could really improve my game. Once again, thank you for your time and knowledge. Much appreciated! Please keep them coming, thank you Roy!
Thank you! What I needed the most!
ur great!! really enjoy learning from u oss!
I have been using this since my blue belt test over 10 years ago. It's timeless.
Good videos. Good explanations. Good, smooth demonstrations. Thank you, Mr. Dean!
it is absolutely impossible not to notice the influence of aikido in those techniques :)
These videos are my compass through the fog,,,,,,Thank you Roy
Thank you so much. great video
Super Solid Technique, I hope to see you this summer when I am in Oregon.
Go with the Flow
Great video Roy
Suggestion for next video. After your excellent compliant demonstration (wonderful target for techniques), show a couple examples on fully resisting blue belts. For Purple/Brown, show a the connections between the basic techniques shown in this video to deal with the common resistances and take an alternative route.
Hi Roy, I have just started Ju Jitsu in New Zealand after over 15years in a striking style and your videos are extremely helpful and well done, thank you, all the best
whoa the second escape is so simple yet effective... awesome video thx!
You have awesome videos. Thank you very much for your instruction.
Yea...And don't get greedy. :) Thank you Professor Dean.
Awesome! Thank you.
your a great teacher!!
Good stuff!
Amazing video!!!!

he just came to my gym. amazing teacher thanks roy!
Great... as always.
thaks 4 the vid
thanks dude!
I just started Jiu-Jitsu, and this and the mount escape vids are awesome. Thank you.
Wanting an update! 11 years ago you started...are you still rolling???
this is gold ^^
great video
Thanks!
Great vid! Period.
Very good teacher.....
you 're anbelievable... I just arranged to go and try it
thank you, i need this. my escapes from side control need some work.
Ya stick to what works for you, n practice makes perfect. Jujitsu takes a lot more practice compared to other stand up arts like Muay Thai, but when u get it down its a great feeling.
Hey man, very helpful video. I used the spin out in one of my spars the other day and it helped me a lot. My spinout had a different outcome when i did it though, i was fast enough to spin out and get my arm on top of him to get him in a sprawl instead of landing in his guard.
nice video. keep posting !!!
That spinout is so pure
@uchideshi I'll be sure to try that next time. Thank you for taking the time to reply back with your valuable information. I really appreciate it. Take care Roy.
Great post mate. I have been struggling with a few pro guys recently in side control, so I'll see how this goes! Great teach. Train Hard, Fight Easy, and never play leapfrog with a Unicorn!
I just wanted to mention that it is so obvious that the master (sensei) has the knowledge of both arts, as he actually do ;)
GOOD teacher!
excellent answer that's what I was kinda thinking! do it fast!!!
Great moves, my son always gets caught on sidemounts. I think following your moves he'll be able to counter the side control. Thanks
Great tutorial
interesting. i like it
I always thought the same thing.
It's gotten a bit easier for me (with practice of course) knowing that all i need to do is get my closest knee in. Once I get that, i'm comfortable shrimping to try to get full guard.
This works well for me as a 2 month white belt, it's yet to show any difficulty for me.
very nice escapes. good to know more then two :) 5/5
This is good the detail of grabbing the arm is what I was missing. It seems so obvious now that I know it LOL. They would push my leg and I would have to resort to half guard.
Thankyou
eeeeexxcellent!!
Good camera angles and also like the way you repeat move few times from different angles.
Sophisticated
This guy is fucking pro.
Didn't know Howie Mandel trained Bjj!
used these in my BJJ class- same technique my master taught us- good good
That'd be sick to do the spinout straight to a triangle! I think theres to much space tho, would be
Badass if u could pull it off tho. Great vid
the guy is good
This is Howie do it!
Ya, getting out of side mount is probably one of the hardest thing to do in BJJ. At least for me it is, im pretty good at escaping the full mount, back mount, n half guard, but i suck at the side mount.
What about when the bad guys knees are stretched and applying pressure to chest?
Hi Roy, I've tried to use the side control escape method of going to the knees when rolling and sparring. A lot of the time when I use this side control escape method I find myself getting stuck in a guillotine or peruvian necktie position, because my opponent will turn into me as a counter. Could you please tell me how to avoid this when using this escape method?
I could do all thoses escapes too if I was rolling with Howie Mandel
I have a question about the final technique. While effective, it seems to prolong time spent in a half-prone then turtle position without actually making use of those positions strategically. If the catcher is quick, can't he just spin over your turtle and put you in jeopardy of the rear-mount?
Does anyone know of good side mount escapes if your opponent is controlling your head and holding your pants at the hip.
bjj escapes are the best.
I didn't know howie mandel did BJJ. hehe
''don't get greedy'':)))
watch the head lock escapes?
David DeAngelo vs. Matt Scannell. If you know you know.
@AlienwareMetal I doubt his arm would still be there if you were really rolling. If it's their grab it, but don't count on it to be available very often
could leave your foot under the hip and work the pyramid/damn good guard.
i know right? he just ninjas around this guys body
You're better than submissions101
Dam thats Rick Ellis:D
is that Howie Mandel?
Howie is a blue belt??? that's bad ass
@AlienwareMetal agreed
when a i put my hands as the first way,, they try an americana
The forearms. Push up- bridge.
@Gold4Guida holy crap, he looks just like him! lol!
I swear the blue belt is now a black belt, right???
Yes you are right. The guy is Rick Ellis and he has his own UA-cam channel too. Roy Dean sometimes come as a guest
I didn't know Howie Mandel rolled jiu jitsu
The hell? is that Howie Mandel?
