    I'm a big lover of my hexagon cardigan, it's it's the crochet garment I've gotten the most compliments of heheh. With that said, I totally agree on the point of a lot of these trends are just "lazy sizing".

    When I first saw that Harry Styles cardigan, I thought it was made by a family member and he was wearing it for sentimental reasons. Like his Grandmother used what yarns she had, but put it together with love. From that perspective I would like it, however, knowing that a designer came up with it, my opinion of it is definitely not liking it whatsoever. The granny hexagons cardi always gives me vibes that you are wearing a blanket. Anything made with granny squares that isn’t a blanket gives me those vibes. Perhaps because that was what I was taught they were made for so many years ago 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve made a couple sweaters out of the velvet yarn (baby blankets too). The recipients tell me they love the feel like it’s a giant snuggly hug. The problem with that yarn is if it’s washed with other items or too vigorously washed it will worm…badly. A friends husband put the sweater I made her in with a ton of other clothes, (not bagged - no protection) and it turned into a horrible mess with giants loops sticking off Willy-nilly. She cried because he ruined it. She gave it back to me thinking I could just tighten up the stitching somehow. I had to frog the entire thing, lots of the yarn had to be cut out and then I remade it. I tell everyone hand wash only. Those rectangle shirts are good a specific body type only imho. Interesting take on the trends. Cheers from FL😺

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes garments that carry sentimental value will always get a pass! Maybe the designer had something really specific they were inspired by, I’m not sure.
      So interesting about the hexagon construction originally being for blankets?? I had no idea

    it seems like these are all just "beginner crochet" things. granny squares, simple tops, soft bulky yarns that are nice to hold, etc. I really don't think they are made to be everyone's cup of tea, just the easiest things to make when starting out which is why you see SO much more of them being posted about.
    I had a similar experience over 2020 where i'd been crocheting for years at that point but seeing the fiber art world EXPLODE on tik tok during covid made me feel the same kind of icks you have here since every new pattern/trend was all so raw and homemade looking

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Рік тому +3

      That’s a really good point! I think I touch on that a bit with the 3-piece Pinterest top. It looked easy and attainable but working ages on a piece that makes you cringe a few months later is the worst feeling. (I speak from experience lol).
      Tiktok has definitely changed the fiber aft world a lot, but it is nice that more people are able to dip their toes in and try an easy project to start out :)

    I’m a knitter that crochets every once in a while (mostly for gifts because its quicker) and so I’m probably biased but yeah…I think the biggest problem I have is the lazy sizing like you mentioned. Honestly I see this even with knitting. People make super chunky garments with thicker yarns because its easier and quicker to make. At the end of the day, do what you want with your own hands, but I would like to (gently) encourage people to embrace longer projects. I just finished making a sweater that took me a month to knit because I’m not super fast and I used a medium weight yarn, and I feel super good about it. People tell me it looks like something you could find in a store.

    You make good points as to why they might be popular such as easiness! You critiques don't really seem farfetched and are reasonable. I as a beginner crocheter made the harry styles cardigan as my first crochet project but I did do it differently. I didn't use a bulky yarn and I picked colors that went together in a fall color scheme and instead of the houndstooth I did sunflower granny squares. I also did a different crochet stitch for each color so there was more visual interest. I also made it my size so it looks nicer than the harry styles one imo and I'll definitely be wanting to wear it for years to come bc I put in the extra effort to make it something I wanted.
    I think also the ease of tutorials available for watching to learn as well heavily influences these trends. There aren't a ton of videos for clothing from crochet that aren't of blocky trendy easy to do crochet clothes readily available for people to follow along with. I think if there were more tutorials for higher skill leveled items they may become more trendy.

      Oh my god doing different stitches for the different colors is such a simple but genius idea. I was thinking of making something like the patchwork cardigan because it's beginner friendly and looks nice, but I know I would get so bored of making all those same-looking panels. But if I switch up the stitches that would keep my brain engaged for longer. Thanks for sharing!

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  11 місяців тому +1

      yes making something your own is such a good idea! like yes if youre a big harry styles fan I can see why youd want the same exact cardigan, but i encourage people to be realistic about how much theyll wanna wear it
      and yeah, imo if people want to stick to beginner level crochet AND still wear it, they should make stuff like tote bags (for example)

      Yes I’ve tried Tunisian crochet and it’s sooo fun. Unfortunately the garment I made was made w 100% cotton yarn and that plus the fact that Tunisian crochet is quite stiff/dense resulted in a bit of a failed project :(. Any patterns you recommend?

    @TCMedicare101 10 місяців тому +1

    I'm in total agreement with you on all 3, though I do think the 3rd one would look good on a very slim body. For me, like you, the colors can't be eye-jarringly bold, but even more importantly, most of the granny square basis garment designs look like a potato sack on almost every figure. It's sad because we all know that someone put deep time, loving effort, and expense into creating it, only to look like something that needs to go into a rag bin. I do like velvet/velour, but primarily for blankets. I did have a velour top when I was in high school and college that I loved and wore until it fell apart. I'd buy another one again if I could find that exact piece, but I think it would be VERY hard to find just the right yarn to create one with the perfect weight and drape that is needed to make one that wouldn't look like a gunny sack.

The only think I could say is don’t like about it it’s hard to see the stitches which became annoying. I've seen one single hexagon cardigan that I actually liked - the Mezzo Cardigan by the Make and Do Crew. That one is so cute, but that's my only outlier. I'm 100% in your corner that humans are not made of geometric shapes, so clothing that is doesn't fit particularly well. I also think with the modular look (like the HS cardi) is a little messy, but that's just me - I like really simple and clean patterns, maybe a fun texture here and there. The only granny squares I have ever made were swatches or coasters haha. Not my style either, but there are some who LOVE them and I'm jealous of those who have found something they love so much and who have fully found their style.
