    I'm poor so underconsumption is just something I naturally do lol I mend things for me and my partner. But I also reuse plastic bags from stores, save extra napkins and ketchup packets. Use reusable straws and try to avoid buying brands or stores like Shein and Temu. When I need a new pair of shoes or clothes, I buy locally if I can OR go to a thrift store. Things are still incredibly expensive though. Most of my money goes to bills and food. I think everyone should practice not buying a lot of things that aren't necessary. Just because it's better for the environment.

      I love that you do all of that! I think so many of us live this way: not wasting things and avoiding stores we know don’t have great ethics. But also… so many people don’t! and I think a “trend” like this popping up shows how far we still have to go for people to stop buying things they don’t need

    Never heard of this trend before, but this kind of thinking runs deep in me. As a poor Brazilian gal who grew up in the countryside, I always valued my money, and culturally we are proud to be creative when fixing broken things (we have a whole concept over this matter, it's called gambiarra) or to buy something good for little money. When I moved to a big city here, I still felt the pressure to buy clothes that where fashionable and Shein was actually great for that. The brand allows some people to afford a scrap of the fashion and the comfort that few privileged individuals in this world have (think of someone that needs to dress nicely in order to get a good job, for example). I'm not being apologetic towards exploiting poor workers anywhere, but reality is complex when we have such inequity of means to live. I say, let the "first world" think they are inventing the wheel with this new trend if it makes them dig our graves slower

      this is so insightful, thanks so much for sharing. I love that there’s a word for it, gambiarra, so interesting. Yes! That’s why I don’t think we need to shame people for buying fast fashion. One for the pressure to be stylish and two for the point you brought up, that many people actually NEED to look a certain way to get further in their careers, get respect, etc. that’s a really good point

      aww thank you!! Sometimes I feel like I need to be less chill and worry it’s boring, so it’s nice to know some people like it haha. But I already get so worked up while talking for so long I need to be as chill/as myself as possible. And yayyy, I’ll be posting twice a week for September (and maybe October??) so if you have any video requests/ideas I’m all ears

    I come from a house of overconsumption but like to the EXTREME. I am blessed to have grown up in a wealthy household but I sometimes find myself buying like 3 lipsticks in one shopping spree- I’m 16 and my spending habits reflect on my parents. I’m trying to break the habit slowly be more mindful of how I spend my money because I spend my paycheck FAST and I have so much clothes that I don’t even wear. I think overconsumption is very cultural in America and richer countries. “I need this new lipstick!” Yeah no- I’m blessed to have more than one shirt because some people don’t even have that- I don’t need a poorly made 80$ shirt because it’s “trendy” lol. This video is so interesting and you explain it very well.

      @carlascalling  7 днів тому

      ahhh the fact that you’re aware of this and able to own up to certain habits says a lot about your character :). I think that’s the first step and it’s so normal to mimic behaviors you grew up with. I’m so glad you liked the video, but just a reminder that none of us are perfect! 😌

      same :(. When it comes to sewing I only ever work on fabric I already own (thrifted items), but yarn I buy new and whewww. Expensive!

    we applied for a mortgage for a house last week. Our net income is around 3.5k, the monthly repayments for the house are 1.5k, with an additional 200€ per month for electricity and heating etc. so we were very confident we could afford it. Yet we were refused by all banks we talked to because they expect a family of three to spend at least 2400€ on "groceries, gas and miscellaneous items" per month. What the actual f? Who spends this kind of disposable income on random stuff? For context, we need about 700-800€ per month for the entire family to pay for food, gas, clothing and hobbies etc.
    It´s like the whole economic system is just expecting people to overconsume and punishing those who live frugally.

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому +1

      wow, now I'm worried about one day trying to get a mortgage (if that ever happens, lol). it's wild that living below your means can still prevent you from being able to make bigger purchases later in life. so bizarre that they wouldn't be happy just seeing your net income. :(

    Thank you for mentioning that it allows so many people to Romanticize their life. Although it is important to mention those who are doing it just because it is trendy most of the examples I see just feel like normal people posting. I grew up low income (still am) & I spend years trying to feel comfortable with what products I had. For fashion I was ok with my clothing since I have always dressed in a more alt style & often those styles look best when stuff is older/broken in or made/altered by the wearer (when fishnet tights get too ripped in the crotch area it becomes a layering piece under a top for example). But for bodycare/hygiene/makeup I never felt like I had enough, I'd even keep empty product bottles/jars just so I could feel like I had more then I did. Watching people do "project pan" videos for years has helped me let go of those empty items I never truly needed.

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому +1

      oh interesting I've learned something new! I've never heard of project pan before but that sounds like the best way to get through items. it makes me anxious having multiple versions of one product. right now I have 3 face washes because one was a gift and the other a friend had left over after moving and didn't want to throw it out. I'm glad to have them to finish but I wouldn't normally have more than one!

    I was kinda laughing while watching the underconsumption reels and tiktoks. But, in reality, I think I might have a bit of a shopping problem because there’s always a event or reason that I “need to” buy something new for, (new job, vacation, gym clothes not fitting, etc.) and sometimes I’m able to withhold the urge and find something that I already have does work, if not, I try the thrift stores first but usually they don’t have what I’m looking for, so I just wait for a sale to happen at one of my favorite online retailers.😅

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому

      haha yes I get this! I find I'll randomly want to buy things I don't need when I have an event coming up or want to start exercising more. But in reality I have plenty of things! I'm the same, whenever I do buy new, it's very unlikely that I'm going to pay full price

    I really appreciated you pointing out the cultural difference between the US and Europe when it comes to overconsumption. I keep seeing UA-camrs from the US talking about "the west" and "the western world" without realizing that Europe is very different culturally from the US. "Underconsumption core" is the norm here in Italy

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому

      yes!! it's so different. what sort of 'underconsumption' habits do you feel are most common in Italy? of course european countries aren't perfect, but there are small cultural differences that have an impact

    As someone who has practised underconsumption due to financial issues, I really don't give too hoots about people glamorising it. As long as it does the job, why not?

    That's how most of us live in south america. I'm studying in the us and although I knew that the people from the us used to have higher consumption habits, I was not prepared for what I have seen here. I hope this trend sticks, for the sake of the whole world.

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому

      @@carlascalling It is literally too much everywhere.
      The craziness of the Stanley cups, the fact that they replaced buying new clothes by thrifting in the same proportion, how much plastic they use for packing the food and then they use other plastic containers to organise the same food that was already pre packed, the amount of food that is discarded because they get more than they need. Also, how they use electricity and water as if they are infinite resources. And don't make me talk about public transportation 🙈🙈🙈
      I lived in London for 2 years before coming here, and even compared with the UK, the patterns are more extreme here.

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling  Місяць тому

      hahaha i'm obsessed with this list, it's all so true. the thrifting point is a good one, i might look into that. it's kind of similar to the stanley cups and tote bags, something good that is now consumed to the point where it's not helping the environment anymore.
      i do love secondhand shopping and sometimes i'm like 'maybe people would like that content more' but i don't care to have so much stuff i don't actually like that much lol.
      also very cool that you've lived in london!! that's where I am now
