Welcome to our latest video where we delve into the world of aviation safety and technology. In this episode, we shine a spotlight on the Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS), a critical component in modern aircraft safety protocols. Whether you're an aviation enthusiast or simply curious about how technology enhances safety in the skies, this video is for you!
RAAS is a groundbreaking technology designed to provide pilots with crucial information during various stages of flight, particularly during takeoff and landing phases. Our video explores the multifaceted benefits of this system, from improving situational awareness to enhancing decision-making capabilities in critical moments.
Join us as we break down the key features of RAAS, including its ability to provide real-time alerts and advisories regarding runway status, potential runway incursions, and other pertinent information. Through a combination of audio and visual cues, RAAS empowers pilots to navigate complex airport environments with confidence and precision.
But the advantages of RAAS extend beyond the cockpit. We'll also discuss how this system contributes to overall airport safety, reducing the risk of runway incursions and collisions, thereby safeguarding both passengers and aircraft.
Furthermore, we'll explore the role of RAAS in enhancing operational efficiency for airlines and airports alike. By streamlining communication and providing timely guidance, RAAS helps optimize runway utilization and minimize delays, ultimately improving the passenger experience.
Throughout the video, we'll hear from industry experts who share their insights on the importance of RAAS in today's aviation landscape. From pilots to air traffic controllers, their perspectives shed light on the collaborative effort required to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Whether you're a seasoned pilot, an aviation professional, or simply someone fascinated by the intricacies of flight technology, this video offers valuable insights into the transformative power of the Runway Awareness and Advisory System. Join us as we explore how RAAS is revolutionizing safety in the skies, one runway at a time.
Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more fascinating insights into the world of aviation technology. Thanks for watching, and fly safe!

At 3:29 you show a surveillance radar, not a ground radar which are sometimes placed at the top of the control tower like here in ATL. It’s a smaller rectangular shaped digital shape. On a side note, some airports will place another one between runway(s) and vehicle highways to negate false returns like we have here in ATL. We actually have 3 ground radars in ATL for redundancy.

Could you expound on this? If I’m understanding smaller remote radars are placed between runways/roadways and this is fed into the primary ground radar to show a more comprehensive picture in a single display? Always been curious how airport ground radars work given the huge number of vehicles and aircraft movements around large bulky structures

    • @cnvi08
      @cnvi08 18 днів тому

Computers know the difference between a vehicle and an aircraft and they also know where vehicles and aircraft are supposed to be and not thus it’s fairly simple technology to negate false returns.

My only concern, as with all the lane guidance and collision avoidance systems in automobiles is that the more we become reliant on them for information, the more lax we become when driving or piloting. Hopefully, pilots are tested often enough that they don't let technology allow them to become sloppy.

Joe, it sounds like it doesn't warn of runway conflicts such as that with the KLM jet in Tenerife. This system only seems like a semi-smart system lacking a lot of data input of the live environment around it. Needs much more improvement.

I was on a flight, at 13,000 ft and ‘CAUTION TERRAIN PULL UP DON’T SINK PULL UP’.
At 13-14000 ft that’s a stunner. Descending thru clouds, over the Andes, and the pilots had the MFD on weather radar. When the MFD was set to TAWS it was blood red.
So he’s right. If hear that anywhere other than over the numbers, and definitely not at 13,000 ft over 16,000 mountains. Way below MEA or MSA (?). That was a post flight discussion.

Why are the distances in meters when the majority of flight measurements are in feet? Are the units (metric vs.imperial) selectable? We can pretty much guarantee that a firefighter in NYC at JFK doesn't know how long 300 meters is, but certainly knows 1000 feet. Plus, aren't runway distance signs in 1000 feet increments?

You mentioned that raas will inform you about short rwy if it's less than 2000m available in front.
But what if you configure your performance with 3000m of rwy,but accidentally depart from an intersection that has 2100m,would the raas intervene also in this situation, since it's more than 2000m,but less than 3000m as you configured your take off performance?

I you would have KITT in your plane, you just would have to say: "KITT fly us to JFK" and KITT would do that en you could lean back. :) But back to that example of lining up on 04R at JFK instead of 04L. Now 04R happens to bee much shorter than 04L at JFK, maybe too short for a (fully loaded and fueled) B747. But when bot runways were to be of the same sufficiënt length for the B747 the RAAS would just say: "on runway 04 right". Will RAAS also check the runway programmed in the FMS, and thus say: "wrong runway" ?
