- I know it's a pretty long title. The word kamikazetokubetsukōgekitai means Kamikaze Special Attack Corps, although the official name of the unit was Tokubetsu Kōgekitai (Special Attack Unit) kamikazetokubetsukōgekitai (meaning divine wind Attack Corps) was the popular name which it was known with.
The person in the picture is Ensign Kiyoshi Ogawa, who flew his aircraft into USS Bunker Hill during a kamikaze mission on 11 May 1945

He was later to be hanged at Changi Prison, Singapore after British came back following Japanese defeat. Fortunately, under few circumstances his life was saved. I have a distant relative who was stationed in Pearl Harbor but was fortunate enough to survive the attack. When I was a teenager, I was privileged to hear a lecture by a kamikaze pilot who miraculously survived. He spoke at length, albeit in a very thick accent, about the measures they took to brainwash him into that willingness to throw away his life. It wasn't filmed and UA-cam didn't exist. Thank you for preserving this bit of wartime propaganda. It's so easy to forget that the suicide pilots weren't born to be weapons, they were just made that way.
