We’re continuing our discussion of class and you can’t talk about class in America without addressing race-not that people don’t try. The legacy of wealth inequality between Blacks and whites goes way back, and most of it was by design. Here to discuss is Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and creator of The 1619 Project Nikole Hannah-Jones.
SHOW SYNOPSIS: Emmy Award-winning producer, actor and comedian Larry Wilmore is bringing his distinct voice to streaming with a new weekly special series. WILMORE. Larry will have real discussions with high profile people from all different backgrounds including sports, politics, and entertainment. Each episode will not only cover the election but will also engage in the important conversations of the week. It will be funny, sometimes serious, potentially awkward, and most definitely honest. Larry Wilmore (who has an overall production deal with Universal TV), Jo Miller, Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, David Miner, and Michael Rotenberg serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Jax Media and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. - Розваги
Nikole Hannah-Jones is to history what Jerry Springer is to social studies.
$0.01 to $1.00, that's crazy, sad, and wrong.
Thank you for the great show.
Great discussion. Glad to see Larry Wilmore back. I use to love his TV show. Intelligent guy and funny.
My father never got the GI loans 😞 and he was in World War II!
I'm for it. I don't see how other people doing better is going to make me do worse. I think it would end up helping EVERYONE in the long run.
In Canada, the Indigenous soldiers in World War 2,, who at the time weren't considered basic citizens of Canada, were denied the GI bonuses and financial assistance given to other veterans. Also, the Indigenous population weren't considered citizens here until 1963!
Yes in America we act like canada is some perfect place and i wonder to what extent that vision of canada has affected canada's own view of themselves, when in reality they have had an equally bad reputation with race and in their interactions with indigenous peoples. Even while the word Canada itself comes from the Laurentian Indian word for town (you can hear the similarities in other living iroquoian languages like the cayuga for town)
Love your show, Larry!
i agree
Seriously, we’ve needed Wilmore over the past 4 years!
Where’s he been? And what doing? I’ve gotta google him.🇨🇦🦆
Larry Wilmore is a hypocrite for antonogizing Cosby on a daily basis on his own talk show now he look foolish now that Cosby is free
According to Senator McConnell, America shouldn't be responsible for something that happened 300 years ago. Smh
Something that happened 300 years ago and 200 years ago and 100 years ago and yesterday, because it hasn't been negated yet. Slavery did not happen in a vacuum. It's effects are still rippling forward through history.
Which is why we are trying to vote him out.
@@KesSharann 👏🏽 tell it! Even the emotional trauma and stress have been genetically passed down. But we're just complaining
Let them work and struggle like the rest of us to support our families...
Stop the free loading and victim mentality
Glad Larry’s back!
y'all know you would both pass the paper bag test! lololol! Great work nonetheless!
@Salim Sivaad no it’s not.
I thought this was a scary movie because that thumbnail looks like Pennywise. Turns out it's a sci-fi comedy.
When tax bills benefit landed investors over workers, the wealth gap is self-perpetuating. Better education and access can lead to better jobs with the potential for growing wealth, but there are gaps at every step of the way due to institutional racism. Without reparations, closing the gap isn't possible.
Education is a necessary but not sufficient condition for improvement. Also, it could be argued that reparations and "free money" are not the same thing.
Strong interview. The ending could have been better, though.
Super informative, thank you for this
Every country in this developed world should pay reparations, if they profited and became prosperous from the inhumanity of slavery needs to pay!
ill vouch for that!
People get so caught up in the rights of the nation and state, the constitution, etc.... they forget a thing called basic human rights even exists.
-aka not being a trash pile of a person to your fellow human beings-
The super rich and powerful people in the world would not let this happen.
It is a joke when people say race doesn't matter when there is wealth inequality
Should USA be divided into countries? Will that make it inclusive??
I think reparations are impossible, then I hear stuff like this, and I think, this sounds possible. Then we hit the wall of HOW do we determine WHO benefits from this, and it just seems impossible again... :(
Should there be a statute of limitations on reparations? How far back in history should we go? Also, how should reparations be calculated? What are the mathematics of reparations?
If you’re serious it can be done.
Exhaust fumes.......
this is a really wonderful show- thank you!❤
We will keep having this conversation till America does right !
to begin, how about opening every facility of education free of charge to anyone of Slavery Descent pre-K to PhD. we need to find the minds with the answers to today's most pressing problems. an education free of the worries of finance can flourish and bring about great wonders. Free The Minds with Free Education.
Whaaaaaaaaaat
This is the problem. Not sure what she’s talking about, but the G.I. Bill isn’t meant to buy homes. The G.I. Bill is only used for education.
Incorrect. Benefits under the GI Bill included low-cost mortgages, low-interest loans to start a business or farm, one year of unemployment compensation, and dedicated payments of tuition and living expenses to attend high school, college, or vocational school. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Bill
@@LisaBeergutHolst Incorrect. While the bill allows for a monthly stipend that’s so you can fo to school. The VA loan is for housing.
^^^
Wouldn't taxing rich people to oblivion and raising the minimum wage also reduce the wealth gap?
I don't understand how reparations is going to help long term. Research into lottery winners show the money will be gone in two years. So how is reparations is not going to solve the problem. The money would be better spend in educations, not only K-12, but scholarship for post secondary. Plus educations into money management.
Reparations are not about just money. It really hasn't been established what reparations would actually mean. Education is another thing that only goes so far, ask all the people with a degree and no job. I'm thinking we need a national discussion and perhaps establish a commission to study how it would work. Nicole Hannah-Jones has done tremendous ground work to getting this work started.
It should be both. But how does better education help the family that is struggling right now? I don’t think anyone is saying lottery windfall money. This would be a way to make you for the decades of oppression which can be made up for with one answer
Yes, reparations can take the form of community investment, or no property taxes (what they're fighting for in Tulsa rn), or scholarships, housing, or money given to slavery descendants outright. We can't be afraid to talk about this, or research it.
Mike Polakowski that is extremely offense and does need a response. Only to be reported.
@@kpeggs82 reported!! This is what we got to do - no reply, just report :)
No one should give this woman any platform to talk about reparations. She is involved in this discussion for a paycheck. She doesn’t care if it happens or not.
Give free money please so I can buy Air Jordans and Merijuana.
