  • Adventures League Bard Paladin Multiclass 5E D&D Character Build
    We use AL, D&D Beyond, and our D&D books to create an Adventures League Legal Character Build. The request was to use the college of whispers bard and the paladin character class to make a build. Using the Player's Handbook +1 rule allows us to dive into Xanathar's Guide to Everything to make our character. For paladin we grab oath of conquest.

    You're looking at a potential Dragonborn Oath of Conquest Paladin, and no mention of the Dragon Fear Feat from Xanathar's Guide? +1 to Str, Con, or Cha, and a new way to use your dragon breath to cause your enemies to fear you. Seems very fitting!

    • @Nerdarchy

      Adam Turbett Also, Blue or Green Dragon would of been way better then Red or Black. They are Lawful Evil, and they will conquer them with their mind if the sword fails in which fits the noble perfectly.

    So, a variant on the provided build: the SAD (Single Attribute Dependent) Paladin. One of the two best builds - in my opinion and experience - for those wanting to make Fantasy Vader. Conquest Paladin with two 1 level dips: Warlock (hexblade) and Sorcerer (Shadow). CHA for spells, spell synergy, CHA for attack, Hexblade curse for extra damage, Resilience of the Grave from Shad-Sorc. If you want extra points, go Fallen Aasimar for maximum fear. Non-boss monsters will whither and die in your presence, and with physical attack reliant on CHA, you can give CON some extra love to be extra meaty. I had the luxury of playing such a character at max level (18 pal, 1 lock, 1 sorc), and thematically playing as a champion of the Raven Queen was super rewarding!

    I was thinking of a similar build recently and I came up with a Half Elf Paladin *oath of redemption* Bard *college of swords* or Warlock *pact of the great old one* with the gladiator background, where the player was cast away from the elfville with his mother for being a half elf and when he came to a human town, he was enslaved by humans, forced to work as a gladiator until he killed his masters and now he's looking to get stronger in order to bring the elven politicians to the justice as he sees fit.

    I did a pacifist Pal of redemption and bard, to get that +12 to Persuasion. Played as priest of Lathander, tried to bring redemption to Count Strahd.

    • @liondovegm
      @liondovegm 5 років тому

      Update, after Persuading the majority of Persuadable monsters in Curse of Strahd the DM (my wife) talked to me and we agreed to have the Paladin be separated, and at distance Strahd and a fallen angel to *spoiler for some books* show the Insanity that the God Lathander has and his skeletons in the gods closet, waver his faith enough to Turn him into a Vampire, and because he becomes evil RAW, the army that was being built (and creating an atmosphere of safety which shouldnt exist) they were instead broken and scattered and what remained were brought to the side of the Oath Breaker Pal.
      We did this cause I would be on travel for a long time and couldn't play for a while

    i played a character recently up to level 5 before i had to quit because of health reason. i would love to see what you would have done. It was in a curse of Strahd campaign. Level 1 barbarian followed by the rest in divine soul sorcerer is what i went. race was mtf version of Eladrin. key thing is being a barbarian spell caster who spent time with giants, unwillingly before being able to escape. that is where they learned to be a barbarian. on the escape, found the euipment, plus a spell book that led them to go into the spell casting, since they were pretty weak str wise for a barbarian.

    So I found a pretty funny magic item that goes with this build, the Pipes of Haunting.
    "You must be proficient with wind instruments to use these pipes. They have 3 Charges. You can use an action to play them and expend 1 charge to create an eerie, spellbinding tune. Each creature within 30 feet of you that hears you play must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened of you for 1 minute. If you wish, all creatures in the area that aren't Hostile toward you automatically succeed on the saving throw. A creature that fails the saving throw can repeat it at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. A creature that succeeds on its saving throw is immune to the effect of these pipes for 24 hours. The pipes regain 1d3 expended Charges daily at dawn.
    "

      You know, from a linguist's perspective, this word is very hard to nail down. There appear to be three different pronunciations common to most English speaking countries. Most use the same ending. But, there is a lot of evidence that English speakers are undecided on whether the first "e" is pronounced long or short.

    Loved the video! This upcoming season of AL, I'm building a CG Vengeance Paladin/Lore Bard of Lliira based on the Scarlet Mummers of her faith. Probably going to go 6/14 to get Aura of Protection, Peerless Skill, 7th level spells, and a 9th level slot. If I have time though, I'd love to use this build for a LE opposite of my build (maybe worshiping Loviatar?).

  • @mysteryshadow5m439
    @mysteryshadow5m439 6 років тому +1

    I think Paladin's smite will go up to level 5, though the difference between a level 4 and 5 smite is only a die. Also I could see vengeance fitting the idea mechanically, and possibly thematically. This guy is my sworn enemy and i will bring all my talents to bear against him or her. Not just my sword, but my fearful presence. I only mention this because dragonborn with abjure enemy makes sense. You activate it and they are so scared they can't move. Though its the enmity's advantage making that great weapon mastery much easier to succeed with the go to.

    This could not have come at a better time. Currently playing an Aasimar LE: Oath of Conquest paladin in a friends campaign. Was considering taking one level of bard at level 9 or 10 for ritual spellcasting and some tool spells... now i have to think about a whole five levels and if the aura improvment is really worth it compared to hilarious bard stuff.

    I think College of Valor works better thematically with Oath of Glory palladin given the tenets of the oath inspiring others to join you in your escapades is not only amazing RP opportunities and using advantages provided by bard make that build insane and has tons of utility. plus you can use your strung together words in an inspiring speech which is totatally a paladin of glory , basically its a match you almost feel like WoTC intended to have occur. people should give it a try or look

  • @BarokaiRein
    @BarokaiRein 6 років тому +4

    Another cool paladin multiclass would be Hexblade warlock/paladin. All you really need is a single level in hexblade and you can make charisma your main stat. Paladins with 20 charisma are actually pretty damn ridiculous.

      But you need 3 levels of Hexblade if you are gonna rock a greatsword or glaive with CHA though...right? [Heavy, 2 Handed]

    • @BarokaiRein
      @BarokaiRein 6 років тому +1

      Yeah if you want to use heavy weapons you need 3 Pact of the blade feature. Ideally you'd want 5 warlock levels anyway to get couple of 3rd level smites every single short rest and 3 invocations. 15 levels of paladin gives you your third sacred oath feature as well so going 15/5 makes sense there too.

  • @joemazzola676
    @joemazzola676 5 років тому

    I think if you could squeeze 1 level of hexblade in you could have a lot of fun with this character both thematically and technically. Kind of similar to what you guys were talking about inspiring leader, now you can ATTACK with your charisma too =). Maybe paladin 12, whisper bard 5, and hexblade warlock 3 (with pact of sword so you can still use a greatsword)
    Also at warlock 3 you could use curse ability to crit on a 19 or 20, eldritch smite them to knock them prone, then get advantage on 2nd attack for great chance to crit (if you went with half elf and get elven accuracy even better)

    • @theonlymatthew.l

      True. Though, by the end, when you guys are talking about the Inspiring Leader Feat (btw: my favourite feat in the game), I could easily see a draconic character forgetting that his allies aren't as awesome as he is. And, his leadership speech is him expressing his frustration at the other for not meeting, what he believes to be, the bare minimum requirements of 110% effort. I could even see a speech referencing the training, the prayers, & the vitamins, brother!

    Lol looks like I already communicated when it came out but now the +1 is gone and you can place your ability scores like from Tasha It just got to limit players to race or subclass and spells. That happened season 11. In season 13 that just came out we also got were you can have toughness skilled or magical Initiate if your not getting a feat from your background. You still can not use anything from wildmount acc Inc or magic the gathering do to trademark mainly and warforged and kalitashr can only be used in eberon setting

      Shane Taylor probably not. To be honest I think we've each played a single session of AL. We think organized play is great to get people playing. I can only assume any changes they make to the organization is to improve the over all health of it.

    Hi there... still a great video... just one comment, you do know, that there is a spellin error in both this pdf and the pdf for Way of the Zen Archer... in the Conclusion section "Slills" instead of "Skills". I don't know if others have seen that mistake too, but at least it is miswritten in both my pdf's.

    The more I keep trying to make the Whispers Bard/Conquest Pally work, the more I think about just throwing Conquest Pally out and going Hexblade Lock. So here is my variation to the Mind Breaker, using basic stat array.
    Bard 15/Warlock 5
    8th Level Spellcaster
    3rd Level Pact Magic
    Bardic Inspiration (d12)
    Song of Rest (d10)
    Magical Secrets x2
    Psychic Blades (8d6)
    Hexblade's Curse
    Hex Warrior
    Pact of the Blade
    Invocations
    Armor of Shadows
    Beguiling Influence
    Eldritch Smite
    STR: 8
    DEX: 18 (+4 from ASIs)
    CON: 14 (+1 From ASI)
    INT: 13
    WIS: 10
    CHA: 20 (+3 from ASIs)

    • @trafalgarla
      @trafalgarla 6 років тому

      I don't see the point of taking armor of shadows while only getting a +4 in dex since hexblades get medium armor proficiency. I think a different invocation would be more useful and dex can stay at +2 freeing up ASIs.

    • @aguy8843
      @aguy8843 6 років тому +2

      I would drop one of the dex asi get medium armor master get that plus 3 with half plate lose the disadvantage on stealth from half plate and land yourself at 18 with out shield instead of the 17 with mage armor. Trade that invocation for Thirsting blade remember even at level 5 you can have 2 level 5 required invokes because you gain one at level 5 and are allowed to trade one you already have, and while I do like beguiling influence taking improved pact weapon allowing you make ranged weapons if you want is a good option.

      Unfortunately, "making it in under the wire" only means you'll have to retroactively change it if you want to keep the character AL legal. Honestly, this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me, concerning AL play.

    I'd give him the Sailor: Pirate background. It fits the intimidating, violent sort of command that he demands from the "peasants," since the Pirate background adds that bit about being able to intimidate and extort minor services from people who know who you are. I imagine a captain like Blackbeard from 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," a harsh taskmaster, lording over his small floating kingdom by maintaining an oppressive sense of inescapable dread. He's capable of magic, but hardly relies on it. The 'whisper bard' half of the build would represent him spreading and maintaining his own terrible legend, from the shadows. The paladin half, is when he actually makes his reveal, crushing everything in his path and grinding it beneath his heel.

    Hmm ... red and black? Idk, I'd say Green Dragonborn was more fitting, given the description of greens and their tendency to scheme, manipulate, and gather humanoids under their thumb as living conquests, which is very fitting to the college of whispers. Unless you're taking college of whispers purely for its extra psychic damage in combat, its abilities are all based on manipulation, and I feel like by restricting the character to an aggressive posture, you're losing a lot of the value of the multiclass. Bear in mind that as a bard you can pick up spells like friends, charm person, comprehend languages, invisibility, detect thoughts, zone of truth, and clairvoyance to use in finding out who is plotting against you and exactly what they're planning. With an element of subtle manipulation underlying the bullying exterior, you can set up political rivals to fail in ways that crush their spirits and force them to fall in line.
    You can also take these skills to the battlefield, squeezing intel out of captured enemies and using deception and manipulation to control the enemy as well as your own forces. You could become the living embodiment of Sun Tzu who, according to legend, defeated an enemy over ten thousand strong with only 500 casualties--and those were prisoners from the other side. According to the story he tortured the prisoners to such a degree that to escape him, they willingly marched ahead of his army and committed suicide right in front of their friends on the other side. The enemy army was so horrified that they surrendered without a fight. You could easily replicate that by using Friends to draw an enemy into a private room, chain him in place, and then after the charm wears off, use endless rounds of Vicious Mockery to tear him apart within his own mind, even using Healing Word and/or Revivify to keep him alive for the next session.
    And all of that is without changing any of the in-combat mechanics, just choosing a few different skills and spells. It doesn't deny you the slots for smites, but it gives you something to use them on outside of combat (and, with ritual casting open through the bard, some of these spells won't even use a slot). If you went even deeper into the college of whispers, you could also open up spells like greater invisibility, dominate person, and charm monster, as well as the bard's ability to assume the identity of a humanoid who recently died. And I think you'd be doing this character a disservice to miss out on Heroism. +5 hp per turn and immunity to fear for up to 6 allies at once can be pretty potent in the right spot. You could even roleplay it as something akin to "Keep fighting, you maggots, or I'll skewer you myself!"

    Please help I am running a 5E campaign and my friend is being a rogue and it's really annoying because everything he does is just stealth everything. Every fight is him just stealthing and sneak attacking over and over. Often times fights that are too tough for my players just end in everyone except him dying and then him chipping away at the enemy's health for 2 hours alone. I keep trying to kill him off but he keeps running and hiding from everything so nothing can do it. It's gotten so far I'm considering using the deck of many things and just hoping for the best ( or the worst I guess)

    • @Nerdarchy
      @Nerdarchy  6 років тому +6

      Nick Stinchcomb stealth isn't automatic they have to break line of sight. Empty room, open plains, crystal clear water, etc. Use a rogue against him. Wait until he sneaks, but before hides again sneak him. A taste of his own medicine once and awhile is good for them.
      Even if they are hidden you can attack them. It's just at disadvantage.
      Stealth won't help against area effect attacks.
      Some monsters you can't hide from. Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

      So... Why do you NEED that player to die? Especially if the rest of the party is dead and relying on him to make it through? That sounds...unsportsmanlike. That aside, set your murder scenes in the open with few obstacles if you don't want the stealthier mark to survive.
