  • Paladin + Warlock = Hexadin 5e D&D Character Build Adventurers League
THe Hexadin a combination of Paladin and Hexblade Warlock is a very popular 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Build. We decided we would create one of our own but make it Adventurers League legal.

I've always misread Hex warrior. I always stopped reading when it says you can't use CHA with a 2 Handed weapon, but when you get pact of the blade it extends to any weapon you conjure NO MATTER the weapons type! Awesomeness 👍

  • @Christopher_Gibbons
    @Christopher_Gibbons 5 років тому +267

Remember pact blade can be used with any melee weapon. ANY melee weapon, even improvised weapons. And you are automatically proficient with it.
You are the wise janitor. You use your high charisma to convince people that the crazy stuff you say is safe advice. Your pact weapon is a mop. You spend the entire campaign making puns about cleaning up evil, and insist that you have to say to clean up the blood after every battle. You compulsively use prestidigitation non stop, so everywhere you go smells pinesol fresh.

Even in our min/max builds we like to incorporate some story and rp elements. Sometimes it means giving up a little optimization. Let's face it all of our charisma casters would be a half-elf not very interesting for every video.

I recognize it's a bit of homebrew, but in my campaign the "Hex Warrior" ability is given to all bladelocks at level 3, so it allows any bladelock to get these goodies, while also deterring people from the oh so popular 1 level dip of warlock. I like it because then you could get away with any of the warlock patrons, so maybe a celestial patron and a devotion paladin, or archfey and ancients build, all while keeping a useful bladelock.

Paladin/Warlock is one of my favorite multiclass combinations in 5e. Charisma synergy, the warlock's short rest resources and paladin's long rest resources balance each other out leading to a character that can work well with a variety of rest schedules. Both classes also have a lot of built in thematic and mechanical versatility, between spells, smites, invocations, oaths, patrons, boons, and a combat style, allowing you to build a warlock/paladin as an incredibly deadly glass cannon, a nigh invulnerable and inescapable tank, a dedicated buffing/healing/support character, or anything in between. Can happily blend in some sorcerer and or bard as well. Lots of fun.
My personal favorite family of hexadin builds is heavily armored sword & board fear-based lockdown tanks: oath of conquest 7+, hexblade 1+, divine or shadow sorcerer 0+, valor or whisper or sword bard 0+ (exact level distribution and order can vary to taste, could even mix in some battle master or cavalier fighter); variant human or half elf or fallen aasimar (or maybe warforged envoy in eberron); soldier or noble(knight) background (or orzhov representative in ravnica); defense or duelist fighting style, max cha, warcaster, maybe one or two of resilient con, inspiring leader, sentinel, or alert if there's room, key spells eldritch blast (as a backup ranged option), booming blade (as opp attack option with warcaster), wrathful smite (best single target fear spell), bless (great party buff at any level), shield (for when a lucky attack gets past your armor), find steed (or improved version if you take paladin to 4th level spells), spiritual weapon (for sustained bonus attack damage), fear (best aoe fear spell, you must get 3rd level spells in at least one of your casting classes to get it - level 9 paladin is earliest since you need 7 paladin levels anyway, warlock 5 takes longer but lets you cast it more frequently with the short rest recharge, sorcerer 5 comes with more sorcery points to make it harder to resist via highten or party friendly via careful, or cast it as a bonus action with quicken).
The character is a highly effective party tank that plays as a battle-domineering bully, wading into enemy crowds with AoE frighten debuffs rendering his high AC nigh unhittable, locking down multiple enemies with aura of conquest for the party to pick off from a safe distance at their leisure. Against powerful, fear-immune targets the character shifts easily from aoe control to single target damage with hexblade's curse, hex, spiritual weapon, and divine smite. For part support you have aura of defense, bless if you're not concentrating on wrathful smite or fear, lay on hands to help heal allies after battle, aura of vitality for even more out of combat lealing if you take pally to 3rd level spells.
You can buff, you can debuff, you can heal, you have decent damage output all the time, great damage output when you need it, good defense (both AC and saves) combined with lockdown so enemies can't easily walk away from you to target softer allies. Out of combat you've got a high charisma for social skills and high strength for athletics. About the only aspects of the game you won't be actively participating in are stealth-based scouting and knowledge based research.

Just started a hexadin. Campaign level 10, he's a level 7 Pal of Redemption and level 3 hexblade. In the backstory, my best friend was a divine soul aasimer who become a paladin in his later years. My oath (before I was was a warlock too) was oath of revenge, and the Aasimer helped me track down a Necromancer that caused my family to be murdered by demons, turns out Necro was actually a Lich worthy of a party. My friend was murdered before me, and I called out to anything listening to save us. I blacked out and when I came too, the Lich was gone and my friends sword was now floating and glowing. I took it, and could hear my friends voice. Somehow his soul was turned into a hexblade, and my journey now is to find out how it happened to him, and how to give him his own body

My favorite two races for this build are Drow and Aasimar. With Drow you can add in the Elven Accuracy and Drow High Magic feats, in addition to the Drow racial spells, to add a whole lot of powerful support spells that cast off Charisma and don't burn spell slots. Non-slot burning Faerie Fire and Darkness to gain sources of advantage are tremendous. The Aasimar sort-of flips the class on its head thematically, allowing for a 'Warlock of Light' kind of build, where perhaps the source if your Hexblade powers is a weapon gifted to you by your Paladin diety and divine parent. It lends itself very well to an avenging demi-angel type of character.
Also, there are a lot of crazy class/spell interactions that were glossed over here. Mirror Image + Armor of Curses, for instance, is an extremely potent defensive combo that puts your character behind two dice walls to be hit, with Armor of Curses basically doubling the longevity of your mirror images. Add to that Hellish Rebuke so you punish the foe if they do manage to hit you, and they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

This is becoming the leader of one of my rival groups, I'll explain.
What I've been working on for my homebrew, is several sets of NPCs that are taking the missions the players don't. So, at the beginning of the game for example say there's 5 different starting hooks. They can join the army, travel to the frontier, hunt monsters for rare spell components, they can perform a heist, or search for ancient relics.
The players decide they're going to the frontier. They end save the frontiersman from the creatures haunting the cold nights, news from the capital comes in from time to time detailing the exploits of other adventurers. One, a group of spellcasters have slain a manticore that was terrorizing a remote village, and learned to synthesize a powerful new weapon for the war effort. The war continues to make progress in the East, key rebel figures have been taken out by a brash group of mercenaries. Etc.
Another group has recovered church artifacts thought lost in the cataclysm, leading to a search for even older relics. The group led by an Aasimar Paladin has taken up the search. Eventually leading to a terrible discovery and the death of all but one of the party, who returns to the capital to report that an ancient evil has been awakened. It turns out the Paladin is now a Fallen Aasimar Hexadin, accompanied creatures of his new patron in the Nine Hells.

I've been looking forward to this video for quite some time, I was hoping you guys would tackle this particular build.
I'm imagining this build as non Adventurers League so you could use the Zuriel Tifeling.... That's usually what I go with when I think of a build similar to this. Though part of me always gravitates to the Half Elf.
Of course I think for optimization the Warforged Envoy might be best. If I'm reading its racial armor ability correctly, there is no minimum strength requirement for medium or heavy armor usage. You just need to have the appropriate proficiency

Warforged Envoy still needs 13 Strength to multiclass out of Paladin compared to the normal 15 Strength for Plate Mail. Half Elf makes up for that difference with an additional stat point while also granting Dark Vision/Fey Ancestry/additional Skill or some free spells. So from a pure optimization standpoint, Half Elf is better.
The best way to really min-max Warforged Envoy is with builds that dump Strength entirely but multiclass into 1 level of Cleric for Heavy Armor.

      @M0ebius 5 років тому +1

Timothy Brahm I’m not sure what your question is. Assuming you are utterly min-maxing and using point-buy, start with 15 Strength 8 Dex 16 Con 10 Wis 17 Charisma. Take Elven Accuracy, CHA+2, weapon feat of choice. In terms of progression, I would start Fighter 1, Hexblade 5, Bard 5, Paladin 2, then the rest of the levels in any order. For advantage generation personally I relied heavily on the party barbarian (we had coordinated our builds) and did not get devil’s sight+darkness combo, and supplemented with Faerie Fire/Tasha’s Hideous Laughter/Eldritch Smite. If consistently getting advantage is an issue, consider swapping Fighter 3 for Paladin 3 and take Vow of Enmity from Oath of Vengeance.
My party starts campaigns at higher levels so I can’t speak to tier 1 play. Tier 2 the character functions primarily as a gish control tank in platemail/shield backed by the Shield/Mirror Image. Tier 3 you start to get your nova on. Tier 4 you are the go-to boss slayer.

If you take the pact of the blade (?) you can also use your pact weapon as you warlock casting focus, making your pact weapon the focus for both spell types. Whispers definitely falls in-line more thematically with hexblade tho.

Been using an NPC almost 100% similar in build to this as the main antag for one of my player's story.
Myself and the player worked out their backstory to say their character was a squire for his brother (another NPC that was a paladin) who was Captain of their city guard. The player had taken in a mysterious traveler (with a strange blade that they kept sheathed) who had been injured on the road outside their city and after nursing him back to health he vanished into the night. In the weeks to come, on the night of a Blood Moon, a cult lead by the mystery man had risen up in the city sewing chaos in the streets, marking strange glyphs on the walls, roads and buildings, all forming a diagram that lead to the center of the city. The player, his brother, and other guards had fought their way to the center to find the mystery man performing a ritual over a black blade. After the fight that ensued the player, brother and mystery man were all that were left standing just as they attempted to stop him from completing the ritual. A flash of light and then darkness... The player awoke, to see the city and all it's inhabitants vanished, his body covered in mystical tattoos to which he could not comprehend, and his brother walking away from him. He called out to him but, the man that turned to reply, while appearing as his brother, spoke with the voice of the mystery man and carried the black blade. The ritual failed, all the power that would have gone to the blade went inside the player and the mystery man, who's soul somehow ended up in his brother's body, would have to try again somewhere else on the next Blood Moon and he vanished. Now the player, an Eldritch Knight, travels with a group of adventurers in hopes that he might find a lead on the mystery man to seek revenge, possibly save his brother and hopefully prevent a similar disaster from happening in another city.
It's pretty fun dynamic between the two, the Batman/Guts from Berserk like Eldritch Knight vs his nemesis who shows up in the plot every now and then as they catch him in the middle of his scheming. Sometimes they succeed at setting him back however, most of the time (much to my delight and thankfulness to the grace of the dice gods) they fail and his scheme moves ever forwards. :D

My favourite build is where you pump 11 levels into Paladin (Conquest), 6 into warlock (archfey) and 3 into barbarian (zealot). Then you take the feats sentinel and war caster, picking a longsword and a shield as your equipment.
Now you're a character that can use fey presence to scare people, aura of conquest to stop them from running away due to fear reducing their movement speed to 0 and they suffer psychic damage. You also can dish out zealous fury to overcome anyone. When I played this as a lvl 20 warforged juggernaut my AC was 33 without any spells added to buff me (based on 1 uncommon, 1 rare, 1 very rare and 1 legendary item).
Now you're a tanky caster that can stop people from running away.

1 Hexblade Warlock, X Oath of Vengeance Paladin. Go Sword and board for extra survivability, and be a half-elf. Then, pump cha as much as possible and pick up elven accuracy at 5. During a fight where there is clearly one main target you want reeeeaaally dead, you set up the buff combo. Use channel divinity to grant yourself advantage on all attack rolls against that target for a minute (proccing elven accuracy). Then apply hexblade's curse on the target so that you now crit on 19-20. All-in-all this means you crit 27% of the time against that target and you save your smites for *when* you crit, not if.
P.s. It gets better as you level up. Hunter's mark, then haste, then improved divine smite, then Soul of Vengeance for up to 4 potential attacks in a round.

I was already making this character before watching this, but I have some recommended changes.
Race Fallen Aasimar (Volo's Guide) Aasimar get some nice abilities to include +2 Cha (fallen +1 Str), radiant and necrotic resistance, a flat heal =lv 1/long rest, and Fallen get Necrotic Shroud (fear Aura and extra necrotic damage added to 1 attack per turn =lv, at lv 20 that's a flat extra 20 necrotic damage per turn, for 1 min). Paladin archetype Oathbreaker (DMG), character background Haunted One (Curse of Strahd).
Background: Fiend possessed you as a child, turning you Fallen at birth and it's still locked inside you (alignment neutral/evil or lawful/evil, evil that kills other evil, evil because of the methods you take influenced by the fiend trapped inside you, a literal devil on your subconscious shoulder. In spite of that Oathbreaker or not, Evil or not, you still retain your honor and general moral compass of a paladin, for you are still a paladin).
Weapon: glaive. Feats: Polearm Master and Sentinel for every opportunity attack and reaction attacks when enemies attack someone other then you within 5 feet. Invocation Hadar's Grasp to pull enemies 10 feet closer to you, if they enter your 10 foot reach you get an opportunity attack.
And finally lv breakdown: Oathbreaker Paladin 7 for aura of hate, Hexblade 13.
Aura of hate (bonus to melee weapon damage rolls equal to Cha bonus, that includes every opportunity attack to any creature, not just cursed creature) is better then switching your curse from Target to target in my opinion, and I wouldn't want to do that anyway, I would just gain the hp=lv+cha, that's a raw 25hp heal at lv20 mid combat spontaneously whenever my cursed target dies, no need to switch targets, just put it on the boss or an elite minion.

One fun thing to do with a build like this is if you are making the NPC (or your DM let's you), take Oathbreaker as your Paladin archetype, and 7 levels of Paladin instead of 6, giving you a third source of Charisma to damage with it's aura of hate

Though with a tiefling varient, levistus tiefling you get a +1 to con and a +2 to charisma. So you can be a little more beefy and add in resilient con feat thats a +2 to con technically and it becomes a better save and add in your aura you can concentrate rather well on your spells. Almost not needing warcaster feat.

I actually went Zariel Tiefling Vengeance Paladin 8/Hexblade Warlock 12. With a +1 to Strength, access to Smites from all three, and just great role-playing potential, it was very fun to play Kain "Xarillius" Skye. Though I will admit: Your build seems a lot better than mine.

This tickles my fancy because I like trying to make good gish characters in 5e. I made a homebrew subclass for warlock that pulls directly from Warhammer. Warlock patron The Chaotic: The Blood Thirster. It’s a berserker of Khorne. To summarize the abilities and expanded spells, think of the angry and violent warlock child born of a Berserker Barbarian and a VERY evil Paladin.

I calculated it at about 20d8 damage smite-crits at level 11 with my Hexadin without any additional smite spell, hex or whatever. Average 100 damage on a crit, sure, why not.
In addition having a Greatsword of Sharpness will be amusing once I roll the double 20.

How do you manage that? Smites are limited to max of 5d8 (or 6d8 if fiend/undead).

      {Divine Smite 5d8, Eldritch Smite 5d8} -> both doubled on crit = 20d8
Eldritch smite doesn't have the cap and increases to 6d8 at warlock 9, btw.
Of course I only have 2 of those big slots per short rest, thus I only blow them on a big target.

Yea but only if your gm allows you a short rest after every fight. Otherwise you'll run out of resources fast. Not only that most of your spells are paladin spells which reset on a long rest. All builds have their strengths and weaknesses.

I have a different idea for Warlock/Paladin multiclass.
6 Oath of Vengeance Paladin/14 Celestial Warlock with Pact of the Chain (2/8 or 3/7 if you go for 10th lvl).
The main idea is to take Gift of the Everliving Invocation and make tank character based around self-healing. We won't have Extra Attack until later on (and even then we won't have enough bonuses to make it solid damage option), but we can take Booming Blade and Greenflame Blade cantrips. We need Paladin for heavy armor and shield, Smites for additional damage, and some spells - both for healing (to not waste warlock spell for the Cure Wounds) and tanking (Is Compelled duel any good?). You can stay on 2nd lvl and fo full warlock, but I would prefer to take Channel Divinity, Aura of Protection and Aid spell, which not only will boost our self-healing capabilities but also works really well with warlock spellslots.
There's a possibility to go Hexblade warlock, but that healing worm Celestial is too neat. 1d6 hp doesn't seem much, but if it's just 6 hp... And 14th lvl feature just too thematic for this build.
But I don't know if it gonna work. You need some high stats - Strength for attacks, Charisma for spells and passive bonuses (Aura of Protection, Greenflame blade, max number of healing dices per use), Constitution for hp which is essential for this build. I would also take Tough feat, as well as Warcaster (Blade cantrips on opportunity attacks) and Sentinel (More opportunity attacks). That's a lot of AsI-es. Any thoughts?

I like just doing a 3 dip into warlock for paladin. You get an imp for scouting and utility, high charisma for social situations, and the whole darkness/devils sight combo for combat. With the setinal feat, it gets silly, cuz now the enemy cant run away lol

If I was taking warlock levels I would at least take five of them. Adding on Eldritch Smite to Divine Smite is quite tasty
