@@mutehowl Nope, you are either proficient or you are not. If you are proficient in something, it is your D20 plus your proficiency bonus that is tied in to your character level. If you are not, it is just your D20. Expertise is proficiency+.

@@mutehowl Sorry, expertise is proficiency doubled. I hope you have a good 5e DM that can coach you up a bit. The changes from other versions to 5e are rather interesting in some instances.
If you have played D&D before, this video might help you a little. Nerdarchy comparison video. But in the end, it'll just be a matter of diving into the books and figuring things out or having a coach of sorts.

This character will definitely be showing up in my campaign as a foil for the party. I love the idea of a rival adventurer nimbly traversing the dungeon to beat the party to the end.
"Toadly hopping" "Bitching to the max" replayed those lines 4 times. Very different intro dude bros thanks for keeping freash and radical.

A while ago I was messing around to make a Flash build which was just movement speed. It ended up as marine fighter, elk totom barbarian, monk, scout rogue.
Crazy bastard had 200+ climbing and swim speed because of fighter and it only gets higher when he rages.
Sounds like the perfect arch freniemis to any campaign. Is he friend, foe or both while secretly also being that arch nemesis to your party. wicked awesome character concept and description as y'all fleshed him out. Keep up the good work guys.

I've totally made this character type! :D Barb (Totem, Bear) 3/Rogue 5 (Thief). Also had the nice benefit of being great at grappling and being stupid hard to damage. After playing a mopey spellcaster character, it was great fun to play a guy that was /really/ excited to be there.

For me, the best "Extreme Adventurer" build would probably be an Aarakocra or Winged Feral Tiefling with their levels in EK Fighter and Thief Rogue (or Conviction of the Blade Mist Walker and Thief/AT Rogue if your DM allows the Mist Walker) cuz this way they're prepared for everything. They can fly when needed, they can fight effectively, they have expertise in the most important skills, they can proc Sneak Attack reliably, they can cast some spells, they can do things fast, and if Mist Walker is allowed, they can teleport too. I know it isn't AL-legal, but it fits pretty well.
I feel like the Ranger adds nothing at level one and very little at later levels but a Rogue and Monk combo seems like a very good adventurer type character

I just love this concept. I built something like this in my current campaign. My character is a Warforged Envoy Barbarian 1 /Fighter 1 / Monk 5 with both the Mobile and Dungeon Delver feat. Snagged a pair of the Boots of Speed, and away he goes!
Here is an idea. The best hunter or monster hunter build combo!

I know it's not the main focus of this build, but keep in mind that the clubs and unarmed attacks can't be sneak attacks. Neither are finesse weapons, and the monk weapon feature doesn't inherently give them finesse. Not the main thrust here, I know, but you talk about that extra damage a few times, so it seems like something to be aware of
That is why I added short swords to the character's inventory on the ddb character sheet.

Okay, what? Were you intentionally limiting yourselves to the PHB for archetypes, or is this an old video that somehow got time warped to just recently?
He needs the Sage background feature to support that advance research, Deepstalker Ranger instead of Hunter, Shadow Monk instead of Open Palm, and Lucky instead of Mobile. Better stealth, and better able to survive the unexpected.
This is a great fun sounding character. Maybe one for Vin "xXx" Diesel to play.

I made a similar character concept that was a hexlock fighter i Took invocations to help in dungeon exploration like eyes of the rune keeper
Bonus points to myself i didn't use devil sight nor did i have dark vision
I also thought artificer hexlock but two casting stats limited points so no go
How do you guys feel about a feral elf build? 3 Fighter/Champion, 17 Barbarian. Elven Accuracy Feat, Get that Super Advantage and Brutal Criticals on a 19-20.
The real question is how does the player playing the character feel about it. Seems solid enough at 1st glance.

ok so I pulled up 9 of your AV league builds, a few Cambion were able to take out everyone but the three members with elvish blood. Once the Hex-Paladin failed the charm and attacked the party, only the archers escaped. I am not saying your builds are bad... I only want to bring back the old school basic's that started the game. So 3 CR5 creatures were able to take out 6 of 9 party members, simply by charming the most powerful fighter to aid the Cambion.
I would add Triton as interesting option for this character build or to the rogue videos, to have an underwater explorer or pearl hunter

It's too bad the Mariner fighting style never made it into an official book. That would go great with this character. A Climb speed, a Swim speed, and +1 to Defense. It sounds tailor-made IMO

No many Dungeons have constructs in them. He can use primeval awareness to help locate constructs that maybe in Dungeons.

Question for Nerdarchist Dave, I have to know when have you ever heard anyone say ki like Kai? Like im actually curious, because from the people I know and the research I've done I've only seen it pronouncced Kee. other than that this was a fun build and i love watching your videos, just wish i had a constant group to play with instead of being stuck as the DM, which is fun, but i always wish i could play as a PC once in a while. Do you know of anyways to either get someone else to DM, or good ways to find groups?
My pronunciation comes from reading it.
Step one is ask your players. I kind of just told Ryan and Ted. I wouldn't recommend that method.

I noticed this back when Ted first tried the Monk he pronounced it "Kai" as well, but in this video he pronounced it as "Key" which is how it's actually pronounced. Let's get nerdy! Ki is the Japanese character that has virtually the same meaning as the Chinese version Chi. Because of it's Japanese roots we can know that K-i is pronounced "Key" whereas "Kai" is my nephew's name and unless my brother is not telling me something he doesn't have a whole lot to do with a semi-mystical life energy.

I have a concept I would love you guys to take a look at that I build by accident earlier today.
Human variant, sailor background.
Monk 14 Drunken Master.
Bard 3 College of Whispers.
Rogue 3 Swashbuckler.
(Magic initiate feat: Warlock.)
I was going for a pirate who wasn't really good at being a pirate (Jack Sparrow) who turned to drinking and was kind of a mess. Like the drunk guy your party runs into at the pub who has all the stories and not enough coin to keep the drinks coming.
If I understand the mechanics correctly I'm hitting for 1d8+5 magical bludgeoning damage as well as the sneak attack 2d6 AND 2d6 psychic damage from the psychic blades.
As an NPC this is such a cool idea. Id love to steal this one... but i know my players watch this show T.T
Wait a bit and then sneak it in. They might not notice it if you start off subtle.

Hearing these experienced d and d players talk about "using primeval awareness to pinpoint the location of constructs" was kind of embarrassing. Primeval awareness detects specifically aberrations, celestials, dragons, elements, fey, fiends, and undead within a mile to six mile radius. So you cannot detect constructs with it, nor do you have any idea where or how many.
I just thought it was odd considering how much they seem to be praising primeval awareness, which they should, without understanding it.

Nope. But if you are the gm you could allow it. At the very least I'd say impose disadvantage on both weapon attacks.

I got super stoked about this build because I have a level 5 Bro Monk that's trying to sell Blood Bowl (on the pitch, not the table) to some super rich nobles and he's way more of athlete than a monk monk. So this is a great map to take him as he goes up in levels!

So the ranger/monk multi doesn't work

A half elf (phb) noble background (phb) wizard (phb) theurgy specialist (ua) with arcane domain (sca).
You can mix and match spells as required, you gain domain spells, you have redundancy in them as well, you gain a channel divinity for your spells, and you get extra spells when you get the further cantrips and when you get your cleric 18 level ability by proxy at LV 14.
For the Sake of the story her "diety" is either Asmodeus or Mephistopheles, tiring in with the arcane part and treating the story as she has a pact with this entity. She must still learn spells but she has an understanding of arcane And divine thanks to her "patron".

Not really a fan of adventurers league tbh. It seems kind of unnecessary that you can't use more than one book aside from phb.

DracoFlyer Not necessarily true. Not everyone starting a game or hobby is going to react positively to seeing multiple people with piles of books. Plus it can make things easier for new or multiple dms to ensure consistency.

But I don't buy that part about the players and many books, though I can see the point you're trying to make.

At 7th level if you need to get away from a monster you need invisibility, fly, telekinesis, darkness, or an op hide ability...like the gloom stalker who for the mobility also can have long stride, jump and alternatively you can be a tabaxi and also have zephyr strike. Also for the climbing you don't need to be a thief rogue, you can be a tabaxi.
And you guys went with the Goliath for the carry capacity but then stated he should be light so fighting with fists as a monk is good cause you won't have that meny weapons...
Hire me to work on your builds guys. The past few are...very not well thought through - as the amount of comments I'm adding seams to pile up drastically.
For example for the best duelist build I just flat out countered with a very simple multiclass of battle master blades bard.
Holy archer? Divine soul battle master/gloom stalker/slayer.
A hired killer no-one expects? Whisper bard assassin tabaxi noble.
Divine hoplite? Acolyte zealot barb battle master with shield and spear.
A support range character? Arcane archer gloom stalker.
If you want to self impose limitations for the sake of story: a high elf city watch investigator background enchantment wizard that doesn't take any direct damage spells but as a city guard is trained in weapons hence the battle master archer and created utility low level wands and trinket magic items.
Or maybe these are just their builds and you should make your own channel so people can berate your builds.
A build is something functional. This is something that looks just jumbled together.
If they're so focused on movement and skillmonkey, get a tabaxi rogue/ranger and either a cleric or bard. I'd recommend bard.
Tabaxi has a climb and a burst of speed, plus zephyr from ranger, skills unlocked for dungeon delving from rogue. In fact...
Rogue 4 skills, bard +1 lore +3, jack of all trades and expertise you got the dungeon delving build right here, go up to 5 for bard for inspiration replenishment, rogue arcane trickster - I hate it cause it's too OP but viable - tabaxi for the burst/climb and cunning action. If you REEEEALY wanted a ranger get Glo stalker or horizon walker for their unique benefits at picking the archetype.
And I would, problem is it's hard to do so when you're not in your home country where you left your pc, you only have a phone and most of your money is being saved up for education.
But I would. One day RPG, other day gym, one day gaming, next day mechanics...I have too meny topics to talk about and I'd still have to fit in clients so I can actually help people before I can do UA-cam videos. But yeah, definitely planning to do so.

Uhh...we are talking about builds... builds are for min-maxing. If you're not min-maxing you don't need a build just go with whatever.
It's like mixing the meaning of catastrophy and cat ass trophy. They sound the same but they ain't.
You wanna build a house? Good, you'll go for the most structurally sound option with the most versatility but the least amount of effort and capita you need to invest.
You have boatloads of cash to burn who cares for efficiency just make it work.
The first one is a build, the second one is a whatever. Builds are for efficiency.
Try searching for any video game that has classes, type in Google the name of the game, the class and the word "build" and tada.
@@momqabt True, in a sense. But also, a majority of the "builds" will also end with something along the lines of "This is just a suggestion. You should do what you want, and do what you think is fun and interesting."
Nothing screams 'interesting' like always having a solution to everything, and building something that will rarely have a challenge unless the DM throws the kitchen sink at you.
Extreme adventurer...as in extremely working or extremely excessive?
Extremely working you can try my Indiana Jones build: archeologist half elf rogue 1 lore bard 3 and knowledge cleric 1 16 out of 18 skills covered and from here just go whichever way you want.
Extremely excessive is not for me or for my immediate environment as I don't like anyone I can label as chaotic. You can be a bro, and the first time you try to bro my character you'll get a life or death warning. As in I'd much rather not risk something for the state of excitement and thrills. Just look at what happened in the first episode of goblin slayer.
Adventure yeah come on group...aaaand they're dead.
Prepared no thrills or excitement just cold hearted business and he survives.
Miklós Pál Márton Molnár The correct way to build the skill monkey is to also add 2 levels of Warlock, preferably Hexblade, for the Beguiling Influence invocation on top of Rogue/Lore Bard/Knowledge Cleric for every single skill.
And you’ll actually be somewhat effective in combat too, Eldritch Blast+Agonizing Blast from range and Booming Blade+Sneak Attack in melee, has medium armor with shield and the Shield spell/Cutting Words for defense.
@@M0ebius hmm...noted. but lock...ehh..locks are in a very peculiar position. Early game they're ok but unless morbidly fucking utilized for a few special mechanics...they are utterly useless mid game on. The only thing worse then a lock is an eldritch knight or a blood knight (dark arts companion)
The only reason I have a lock in my hexadin build is for the high charisma mechanic. The same reason the character wears half plate instead of a full plate.
Also utilizing the UA big where the eldritch invocations were tied to level instead of warlock level, so lv1 paladin lv2 hexblade lv3 paladin lv4 conquest oath lv5 hexblade with the lv5 restricted ability to blink to targets affected by stuff like hex or the hexblade debuff.
Other than that I don't really find a use for warlocks except for the hexblade charisma attack.
Miklós Pál Márton Molnár I’m not really sure what you’re saying, but yes Warlocks kind of start to suck after a few levels. That’s why you’re only dipping 2 levels for Invocations/Eldritch Blast/Booming Blade/Hex/Shield. You get tons of stuff for a small investment.
The problem with a melee lock is that
1) your hd is a d8 so you shouldn't be in melee
2) you have eldritch blast which means you don't need to have any weapons at all as it improves per level not per caster level so you need to self impose limitations
3) you usually don't wear good armor. If you're using EB then the enemy is far enough so you don't need to burden yourself or if the enemy is close enough you royally fucked up already for the afore mentioned 1)
4) while I understand having all these Gish mixes for a hexblade look cool, a pure Gish class is very weak, especially if their ranged abilities outshine their melee performance profoundly.
A skillmonkey doesn't need EB to be effective. Moreover they should stay the fuck away from melee as far as possible so the hexblade is unnecessary.
I would say take a hand crossbow and poisons. Take the rogue all the way to assassin and you get disguise and poisoner. The knowledge bard means you'll have access to some carried spells if you level up enough, the knowledge priest will let you use shit for a short time willienillie, also giving access to guiding bolt which is one of the best low level support spells you can have.
The warlock for the skillmonkey is...over-redundant. Aside from 2 invocations which are limited by level (character level not class level mind you) and a few spells...it's really not that inspiring.
I see the idea...but the more I think about it the less I find it inspiring. Good idea tho.
1) Your hit die is D8 but your AC is medium armor+shield (base 19) backed up by the Shield spell (AC 24) and Cutting Words.
2) Eldritch Blast is disadvantaged when the enemy is close to you. It’s always good to have a melee option even as a backup. Note that Booming Blade also increase by character level.
3) See 1. Your AC actually ranges from good to excellent. Consider also that you have 2 short-rest rechargeable pact slots to cast the Shield spell with. Taking Lore Bard to 5 also gives you short-rest rechargeable Cutting Words that cost no spell slots.
4) This is not a thread about gishes so I won’t get too deep into it, but there are many excellent gish builds that will dominate pure martials. But this is not a gish build - it’s a Skill Monkey build that also happens to do excellent damage in combat.
I would not recommend going more than 2 level into Knowledge Bard unless you rolled god-tier stats. Better to just focus on Charisma since most of your spells DC & damage is from that stat, and rely on Expertise for off-stat rolls.

Soooo leme get this straight...you went with ranger over rogue losing 1 skill prof in the process, Then you picked up rogue for the expertise?
Sry nerds, that's just dumb. Lemme reverse calculate knowledge bomb this for ya: rogue 1 4 skills, ranger 1 3 skills//rogue 1 ranger multi class 1 4 skills+1, ranger 1 rogue multi class 1 3skills+1.
Inefficient.
But they gained 2 hit points. 6 skills is plenty anyways
@@JangboFett 6 skills enough? I like redundancy. This is one of the reasons I take half-elf for most of my characters. This is an RPG so social skills even at least for the character are important and it's also good to be redundant there so the more people have overlapping skills the better.
Let's say a typical party build: barb, bard, fighter, cleric, wizard. Barb has survival and athletics pinned, fighter has acrobatics and intimidate pinned but has a low-ish charisma, bard has the social skills, cleric has religion and medicine, the wizard has arcana and history, everyone pinned perception cause that's always good. Now let's say for the story's sake the bard is distracting the guards while the party passes by to save someone who doesn't understand they are a pawn in a game and are being used. The barb has the social skills but he ain't there for afore mentioned reasons. How do you convince the VIP to not alert the guards?
My builds are always centered around a concept but I try to pressure in as meny skills as possible for that character to be able to do what I want them to do for the build.
Take the theurg build in a different post here: noble provides history and persuasion, from wizard I'll get arcana and either religion or investigate half-elf I'll take deception to hide the characters affiliation with lower plane entities and perception because perception is always good.
For that character, 6 is enough. But I also want to take medicine and investigate/religion (whichever I didn't take) and intimidation for the workings of the court.
I'll get one chance as with the arcana domain I'll get proficiency with arcana which I already have so I have a freebie. I still need 2-3 more so as to be satisfied with what I have. That means taking skilled for one of my ASI.

Nah, halflings, dwarf or elf is way more fun for me. Or, as in this case, a Goliath

I've never actually played DnD, but I have to remind myself when building characters(purely as a hobby, for now) that a lot of the stuff that's technically available might not be allowed in certain games.
Just something I thought of when I read the title. It's sometimes a challenge making strictly legal characters when you know better options ARE out there...
Ah but those sponsor segues allow us to see the cool stuff. I am interested in backing that kickstarter now that I've seen it.
