Here's a great tool for learning openings: chessbook.com/hanging-pawns
Chessbook allows you to import and practice your repertoire. It focuses on moves people actually play as well as your mistakes. Connect it to your lichess or chess com accounts to correct the biggest gaps in your repertoire!

I rarely comment on youtube videos but, as someone who just got into Chess in January 2021, I have to say your instructional videos are BY FAR the clearest, most informative free videos available. I am certain that your Caro and Slav for E4 and D4 respectively + your London videos are a large part of my rise from 800 to 1700.

I watched all your videos on the slav and semi slav (along with other channels) now my chess club refuses to play queens gambit vs me. I love the theme of waiting for light sq bishop to move before taking c4 and using that tempo to expand the queen side quickly. I’m so grateful for all the info and come back frequently for review!

In D4 ..... I was lots more confused ...what to play ...I try everything nimzo,Queens,BOGO,Dutch ,QGD,Benoni ......but I noticed that I am comfortable with Slav ( Not semislav) .....ur UA-cam vedios help me lots .......to prepare my opening reportire ....I am not a Proffetional chess player but a decent club level player .... Thanks a lot for ur vedios ... Best of luck for ur channel & ur elo 🙏🙏🙏

I beleive there is a very slight similarity to Caro Kann, so I use it, whether to transpose to ck or the slav out right. I always get the bishop out of the pwn chain, just like the CK.

I'm reading The mammoth book of chess, Queen pawn openings chapter. I found the book quite hard to fully understand it. My Elo is only 900 so I struggled to understand the Slav Defence from the book (written move sequences). Your video simplify it a lot! Have you read that book? Could you make some videos to explain me how to read these written moves from this book? Without a teacher I struggle to understand things from the paper! Visualising those moves is much easier ..

Am I the only one to find it odd that the Slav defense is a 'semi' triangle and the semi-slav is a full triangle? seems a bit backwards xD
btw does 3.e3 transpose into the quiet slav?

  • @alejandrodavidbolanos82

Excellent channel, for me the most accurate to logically understand what you Stephan say.
You said that 3. Nf3 is the most common response, but I wonder then why chess, com call it Slav Defense: Modern Line?
A line that is similar to the Catalan Opening is 4.Qc2 or 4.Qb3. Often, White will fianchetto his light-square bishop. This has the disadvantage of White's queen being somewhat exposed on c2.
It sounds logical but I think it's more logical Alekhine straight way e3.
My question is why to go for that fianchetto ? as mentioned in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slav_Defense?
Why to loose a tempo moving Queen to Qc2 ?
    Thank you

When there is a different order of moves, like this: 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 Nf6 3. c4 ... is 3. ... c6 still an option for black? I think not, because white can play Qb3 immediately and b5 is no longer a viable possibility. Or is in that order of moves Qb6 black's appropriate response?

check this video at the 3 minute mark to answer your question:
      ua-cam.com/video/NDY2UKsJ0uM/v-deo.html
it's not the exact same position, but provides good insight as to why b6 is not great.
i'm also wondering about that same 04:49 point, but i'm wondering why black should not play Qc7 to threaten taking the bishop at c1

  • @yanair2091

"semi-Slav defense has full triangle, Slav defense has half". Very confusing since "semi" means half.

    • @oxagonal
      @oxagonal 3 роки тому

@Yan Air, the Semi-Slav is named that way because it is half Slav Defense and half Queen’s Gambit Declined, not because of how much of the c6-d5-e6 pawn triangle black has built. The Semi-Slav is characterized by Black almost immediately building the “full triangle.”
