    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A launch detection shows a full scale Soviet Strike and General Beringer (Barry Corbin) orders the move to DEFCON 1.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Once more, a wise-guy teenager tries to prove he's smarter than any adult-and nearly destroys the whole world in the process-in Wargames. Computer-game aficionado Matthew Broderick inadverently taps into a hush-hush Pentagon computer, then proceeds to inaugurate his favorite game, "Global Thermonuclear War". What we know, but Broderick doesn't, is that the Pentagon, hoping to eliminate the chancy "human element" in the event of an actual war, has given its computer total, irreversable control over the launching of nuclear weaponry. Broderick and government official Dabney Coleman race against time to reverse the computer's resolve to send bombers to Russia. Wargames scored a hit, especially with teenage filmgoers.
    CREDITS:
    TM & © MGM (1983)
    Cast: Dabney Coleman, Barry Corbin
    Director: John Badham
Producers: Richard Hashimoto, Harold Schneider, Bruce McNall, Leonard Goldberg

Well, General Berringer only had two possible outcomes to his life.
      1. No Soviet attack ever comes. No American attack is ever made.
His entire life is a joke, a waste of time and money and effort.
      2. Soviets attack, or Americans attack.
He gets to be the most important person in the world for 20 minutes.
Then, everyone is dead. No second guessing, no recriminations.
      Just game over.
So, his entire life was either completely meaningless,
or the most horrifying evil that has ever existed.
He might as well laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Yeah I'd wager to guess that was a "one take only" shot and whatever happened happened. They couldn't have had miles of spare fencing and jeeps to crash into it. They didn't anticipate that the fence would wrap around the front so much which caused the jeep to lose steering, hit the guardrail, then careen out of control into the other jeep

@@RideAcrossTheRiver Not sure if you know, but no joke, the same thing happened in real life. There was a false alarm in the USSR in 1983 - Soviet satellites said the US launched 5 missiles. Stanislav Petrov was working at a bunker nearby. He thought they were a computer error because the US wouldn't launch _just_ 5 missiles - that'd leave a lot of facilities that could still launch nukes at the US. Reports differ on whether he notified his superiors or not, but he essentially went with his gut and said "this isn't real". (He had no other info to use - no one did.)
If he said it was real, then the Soviets would attack (that was their policy - the US had done several exercises that worried the Soviets). Then US and NATO would counter-attack. It'd be World War 3 started by mistake.
Given some recent studies, odds are a full-scale nuclear war would've led to deaths in the tens or hundreds of millions, the Northern hemisphere cooling by 5-15 degrees (varying by location) for several years, and the food supply (in terms of calories) falling by over 90%. In short, it would either end human civilization or knock us back to the Stone Age.
It's no exaggeration to say that, by not trusting a computer, Stanislav Petrov saved the world.

There is also another story of the man who saved the world. A Russian nuclear sub had lost contact with the motherland in the 1950s. All of the officers wanted to launch nukes at America. This one guy did not. For over 5 hours he had to convince the crew to not commit mutiny. Right before they were about to, they reestablished contact with Russia. The man prevented WWIII single handedly.

    • @JarrodFrates
      @JarrodFrates Рік тому +4

@@sijdnsd6460 I believe the incident that you're thinking of happened in 1963 at the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis, not the 1950s. The Soviet submarine K-19 was out of contact with Moscow, and US destroyers were trying to get it to surface by dropping training or signaling depth charges that contained only a couple of pounds of explosives. Capt. Vasily Arkhipov was the submarine flotilla leader, and he was aboard Capt. Valentin Savitsky's boat. Savitsky and the zampolit (political officer), Ivan Maslennikov, feared they were under attack by the Americans and wanted to fire a nuclear torpedo. Arkhipov argued against this, and because all captains aboard and the zampolit had to agree on the use of nuclear weapons, they could not use the torpedo. There was a tense discussion (they'd been underwater a long time so they'd been out of contact with Moscow and didn't know current events, plus the air conditioning hadn't functioned in hours), but Arkipov got Savitsky to calm down. It wasn't hours of arguing, though. The K-19 surfaced (with a US plane firing cannon into the water nearby to let them know not to try anything) and made contact with home, learning what had transpired.

Funny thing is, this movie is similar to something that actually occurred not long after the flick got released... except that Ronald Reagan was the "hacker", the Soviets were the folks who got spooked, and Reagan's "hacking" was done with actual troops on the ground, rather than computer games. But a computer WAS involved, the Soviet Union's RYAN model. That model convinced the Rooskies to put their country on a war footing, and a Soviet computer warning system did misinterpret sunbeams bouncing off of clouds as a missile launch. It was only a gut feeling on someone's part that kept a report of a missile launch from being phoned in.

Thing is if the Soviets got a phone call from the US accusing a full scale nuclear engagement, the Soviets would instantly have to assume that a retaliatory strike would be incoming. They’d likely start launch procedures. I doubt the US would tell them “we had a computer AI fuckup so we nearly nuked you lol” and even if they did the Soviets would likely believe it was a bluff just as the US did when the Soviets (correctly) denied launching anything.
