The cost and effort of mining junk iron ore isn't worth it when compared to the ease of shipping it from Australia.

Abandoning the Land 400 is a mistake as we need a layered defense in depth. While the Navy and Airforce will absorb the brunt of a northern attack the army would still be required to prevent a foothold on Australian soil if such an event occurred and would need the latest in land forces hardware to ensure such an attack is repulsed. A lot of this thinking would depend on what happens in present conflict in the Ukraine and how that colours Chinese thinking, would it be possible to swallow a weakened Russia. Food for thought.
