Mitch Grassi (Pentatonix) - Pure Head Voice Compilation (G4-G#5)

  • Here it is! A compilation of a bunch of my favorite moments of Mitch's pure head voice, or less masky head voice in some clips haha, and also added all the notes because I felt like to. He has a beautiful tone on his head voice, along with some resonant moments at his best. Another proof that Mitch is one of the best tenors on the pop industry right now.
    Also this turned out to be quite long? Usually I make my videos shorter than five minutes, but I guess I just have a lot of Mitch head voice moments that I love haha.
    I paid special attention to any possible mistake during the making of the video because I don't plan on re-doing it, so if there's a mistake please point it out in the comments so people would see it - but be nice about it, of course.

      Pamela Bravo i have a problem i got into and argument with a mitch fan i said that mitches range is F2-E5-Bb5-F6(C7) i was kind enough to include mitchs melodic inhalled notes but the mitch fan keeps insisting that mitch has a 6 octave range and the mitch fan is getting salty over it and keeps swearing

    • @pb2560
      @pb2560  6 років тому +6

      just dim Mitch's range is E2-E5-A5 and thats what it is, there's no point with making his range bigger with non melodic squeaks or growls. Range doesn't equal talent, so people shouldnt feel threatened that he doesn't sing on six octaves everyday. His usable range is about B2-B4-G#5, and he still manages to be one of the best tenors in the pop industry with less than three octaves. There's no point in pretending he has more than that when range doesnt make him a great vocalist, but his talent, technique and musicianship does.

    • @pb2560
      @pb2560  6 років тому +7

      I'd say that the main difference is the metallic and twangy quality that appears when Mitch masks his head voice, as well as a way more nasal sound compared to his pure hv. Notice that the A4 in 4:13 is slighty masked and it immediately becomes more metallic and nasal. Or at 7:34, notice how his head voice becomes twangier and more nasal when he sings "and it was perfect".
      Basically that's it. It's not easy to tell the difference, since changing your placement is something relatively easy and quick to do, so here there are some slightly masked notes mixed with the rest. It's easier to distinguish it with clear microphones. In the Can't Sleep Love performance at Popspring you can clearly hear how twangy and metallic Mitch sounds whem singing the high note.

      No it was head voice. The reason why it sounds so "grounded" like chest voice is that it is supported. MOST PEOPLE EVEN THOSE WHO ARE TRAINED WELL cant support head voice its so hard which is why Mitch is considered one of the best tenors.

    Hey Pamela! First of all I LOVE your channel, you're helping me A LOT with your videos!
    I know you wrote to tone down the vocal theory conversation but ... Can I ask you two questions?
    1- Is his upper range the most developed part of his voice? If it isn't, which is his most and least developed register?
    2 - Until what note does he support his head voice? To me, at least, till E5/F5 sounds supported but I'm not sure, some people told me he doesn't support his head voice at all.
    The only thing I'm pretty sure is that Mitch is a Light-Lyric Tenor, lol.
    I'm sorry for bothering you, I'm new on vocal theory and I'm so in love with Mitch's voice (his voice is so polemic) and you seem to know his voice very well. Thank you!

    • @pb2560
      @pb2560  6 років тому +13

      Yes, Mitch's most developed register is his head voice! I'd say that he supports around F5/F#5. IMO his least developed register has to be his low notes, though they do have some development! He just has problems with projection and connection, so he sometimes becomes very airy even within his supported range, and below B2 he loses tonal quality. I think it has to do with the fact that the parts Mitch usually sings with his chest register are very slow/vulnerable, so he technically doesn't need to strenght his low register as much as Scott or Kirstie do. Most arrangements give him the higher parts, whether it's belting or head voice. I might do a compilation of his low notes at some point if I feel like it haha
      I actually think either Mitch's technique accomodates to his singing style, or the other way. Even on solo projects he shies away from low notes and mainly covers the fourth octave with belts and fifth octave with head voice. He knows his voice very well and knows how to singso he brings out the best out of his range.
      And thank you for sticking around! I'm so happy I can help. I do plan on making more videos for PTX so if you wanna submit a concept you are welcome to comment them in any of my videos :)

      this not my discussion but let me butt in i think he really fell in love with his head voice as he aged ua-cam.com/video/CTKMVIYbjr0/v-deo.html 2:08 the fact that he knows he was chesty and masky back in the days says a lot , i geneally think he prefer his head voice over mixing and it shows in his range and approach ( ps : he may think it too masky or frogy or whatever he use to shade his old approach but that was the time when he owned A4s and Bb4s )

    Right off the bat, I'm going to admit that I don't know all the technical stuff about music so this is not judgement or anything. But are neither of his solos in La La Latch sung in head voice? When I saw the title of the video, for some reason that's the first song that came to mind.
    Regardless, great video! I could listen to Mitch sing anything in any register or note or tone or whatever the correct word is. Never even heard of those words in relation to music until I started listening to Pentatonix. Lol.

    • @pb2560
      @pb2560  3 роки тому +1

      what i call "pure head voice" in the video is basically a head placement of his head voice. it's common for male singers to place their head voice/falsetto on the mask/nasal cavities to make it sound more steely/"stronger"/like a belt, and mitch does plenty of that too (the la la latch chorus, the climax in aha, just to mention a couple). i was looking for clips where his head voice sounded like, you know, head voice, since he has a really good head voice but it's often lost because people like to focus on the "steely" notes more.

    Newbie to the whole vocal ranges thing - I’ve been researching and doing my HW, but I can still get a bit lost.
    Is Mitch not considered a countertenor?

    • @pb2560
      @pb2560  5 років тому +8

      He could fill a countertenor rol, but the countertenor rol is not a vocal fach comparable to other classifications. It's just a male voice suited on a high register on falsetto/head voice. Both baritones and tenors could fill that role, so the concept doesn't sufice a voice classification. I would argue countertenors don't exist in pop music cause the term just can't be replicated outside it. And Mitch's voice has all the characteristics of a tenor. It's just a matter of understanding that countertenor doesn't work as a vocal fach like concepts like tenor and baritone do, and whether you think that the countertenor role could be translated to contemporary music.

      That's why I initially thought he must have been a Coutertenor but his head voice isn't really displaying that.
      For him to be a Leggiero, he has to be exceptionally agile. Eg. Is he as agile as Avery Wilson (mind you Avery isn't a Leggiero). ua-cam.com/video/ris5gGXaJvQ/v-deo.htmlm39
